Tim Wheeling
Wins 103 Pound Title at Fred Bell
Unseeded
freshman, Tim Wheeling chewed through 4 straight opponents
and wasn't even seriously challenged on his way to a 103 lbs.
title at this year's Fred Bell Tournament in Grove
City. He knoocked off the top three seeds on his way to the
gold.
Tim's
four wins included one pin and two shutouts. One of those
shutouts came in the finals over top seed, Mike Bauer of Clarion.
Before his finals win, Wheeling beat Landon Clayton of Lakeview
by fall, Jamestown's Tyler Roberts, 4-0 and Hickory's John
Fischer, 9-3. Wheeling has been on fire since moving down
from 112, winning 15 straight bouts and posting 17-1 overall
record.
Seth
Stonis also wasn't seeded but fought his way to a 4th
place finish, in what may have been the tournament's toughest
weight class. Seth beat Erie Prep's Markel Keys in the preliminary
round 9-4, then squeezed out a 3-2 win over 4th ranked (AA)
Joey Manilla of Hickory.
Stonis
appeared to be on his way to the finals when he was leading
top seeded, Tim Defrances of Commodore Perry in the semifinals,
but DeFrances, who may be District 10's best 'scramble' wrestler,
caught Seth out of position for one second and turned the
opportunity into a pin. Seth bounced back and avenged an earlier
loss at the Corry Duals by beating 3rd ranked Joel Kerr of
Titusville, 3-2. Unfortunately Seth injured his ankle in that
bout and was not himself in the consolation finals. He ended
the tournament with a loss to Dave Jennings of Attica, NY.
Caleb
Baker was the number 2 seed in the heavyweight class and
was and expected to make the finals, but he suffered a shoulder
injury in his 2-0 quarterfinal win against Tyler Meneely of
Corry. Baker was forced to forfeit his last three bouts and
settle for 6th place.
Travis
Bryant shook up the 215 lbs. weight class this weekend
by taking 4th place. He went into the tournament unseeded
and not even on any of the 'experts' radar screens. But Travis
proceeded to win his first three matches, all by fall before
losing to top seed Justin Buchanan of Sharpsville. He bounced
back with a big 3-2 win over Erie Prep's Logan Thompson to
make the consolation finals. Two of Bryant's four wins were
over the number 4 seed, Tom Moon of McDowell and 4th ranked
(AAA), Josh Smith of Corry.
The
Lancers fishished 9th out of 27 teams, not bad considering
the fact that they were wrestling without a 145 or 152 pounder.
The team will be back in action this weekend at the Jersey
Shore Duals.

Lancers Knocked
Out of D10 AAA Duals
The
GM wrestling team lost to number one seed, Cathedral
Prep for the second time this year and were knocked out of
the District 10 Team Duals in the opening round Tuesday evening
at McComb Fieldhouse. Short handed and forced to forfeit two
weight classes, the young Lancers just didn't have the horsepower
to stay with the Ramblers.
After
losing at 125, 130, 135, 140 and then forfeiting 145 and 152,
they found themselves on the short end of a 44-0 score that
was impossible to recover from. Seth Stonis finally
got McLane on the board, when he bumped up a weight class
and took Markel Keys down at the edge of the mat and pinned
the Rambler in just 56 seconds. That win was 25th of the season
for Stonis.
Big
man, Caleb Baker followed up with a convincing 8-2
win over Anthony Szymczak. Caleb nearly got his 20th fall
of the season when he took Szymczak to his back in the 3rd
period. The McLane heavyweight seems to be picking up steam
and gaining confidence every week.
Top
ranked, Tim Wheeling posted a convincing 6-2 win over
second ranked Adam Sallot at 103 pounds. Wheeling left no
doubt about who was the best 103 pounder in the district.
He dominated Sallot from the opening buzzer until the end
of the third period.
Tyler
Bowers got the final Lancer win, when he secured a hard
fought, 5-3 come from behind, overtime victory over John Agnello.
Bowers gave up the first takedown and trailed 2-0 for most
of the bout, but took Agnello down in the final period to
tie the score. Tyler took Agnello to the mat again, just a
few seconds into the overtime period to get the win.
The
McLane wrestlers will be back in action, this Friday and Saturday
at the Fred Bell Tournament in Grove City.

Caleb Baker
Goes 8-0 With 8 Pins At Corry Duals
The
McLane wrestling team won six of of eight matches at the 2009
Corry Duals, despite being short handed. The Lancers
were forced to forfeit the 145 and 152 pound weight classes
all weekend due to injuries, but still managed to rally from
deficits six out of eight times.
Caleb
Baker had what can only be described as an amazing weekend,
going 8-0 and pinning all eight of his opponents. Caleb
became the first McLane Wrestler to pass the 20 win mark this
season, when he did so in his second match on Friday. His
season record now stands at a team best, 26 wins - 3 losses.
Baker also has 19 falls on the season and is just one
away from entering the GM record books...not bad for a sophomore
285 pounder!
Tim
Wheeling was the only other McLane wrestler to go unbeaten
at the Corry Duals. The McLane freshman went 7-0 and all but
assured himself a 20 plus win season! Wheeling is just 3 wins
away from his 20th. Zac Baumgartner also had a great
weekend, going 7-1 with 6 pins and a technical fall!
D.J.
Myers also went 7-1 and posted 5 pins. D.J. was
involved in one of the most electrifying bouts of the weekend.
He found himself on the short end of an 8-3 score against
Brandon Fronk, early on but battled back and ended up posting
an 11-9 win over the Corry veteran.
Tyler
Bowers and Seth Stonis both went 6-2 over the weekend.
Stonis added 4 pins to bring his season total to 11.
Seth also broke the 20 win barrier and ran his season
record to 24-4. Doug Myers and Paul Scharrer
both posted a 5-2 records at the Duals, followed by Tom
Nuhfer and Travis Bryant who went 5-3. Nuhfer added
4 pins to his ledger, Bryant got 3.
Congratulations
to Kyle Kuntz who notched his first varsity win when
he pinned Steve Kibby of Warren on Saturday.
The
McLane wrestlers will be back in action on Tuesday
at the District 10 Team Duals. They will face top seed,
Erie Prep.

McLane Wrestlers
Lose To Erie Prep
The
Lancers suffered their first Region 4 dual meet loss of the
year to Erie Cathedral Prep on Wednesday evening at General
McLane. It was the third year in a row the Lancers have lost
to the Ramblers.
The
match started at 189 with Nick Milano posting a tech fall
over a very game Matt Campbell. Campbell turned in
a good effort against the talented Prep state placewinner.
Seth Stonis bumped up to 215 and got the Pride and
Poise Boys on the board with a 12-2 major decision. Caleb
Baker gave the Lancers their first lead (7-5) with a solid
4-2 win over Anthony Szymczak at 285.
Tim
Wheeling pounded Adam Sallot at 103 pounds and posted
an 8-0 major to extend the home team lead. Tyler Bowers
got GM's next win when he posted a hard fought, 2-0 decision
over John Agnello at 119.
McLane
led Prep 14-11 going into the 130 pound matchup. Zac Baumgartner
got the Lancers their last win of the night when he toughed
out a 5-2 decision at 135 pounds. It wasn't pretty after that.
The Ramblers posted two falls and a major decision in the
last five bouts.
After
the match Coach Cook had this to say, "I think
we wrestled well. A high percentage of the bouts were swing
matches and we won some and lost some. We are still having
match changing mistakes that need to be fixed, and will be.
We were out-manned in three weight classes against their top
wrestlers but besides that I really dont think we were the
lesser wrestlers. We just ended up on the wrong side of the
score. This team has a lot of heart when they wrestle and
we need to start turning that into wins."
The
McLane wrestling team will be back in action on Friday and
Saturday at the Corry Duals. They will wrestle nine dual meets,
including seven Region 4 matches over the two day span.

Five McLane
Wrestlers Medal at Tool City
The
McLane wrestling team failed to put a wrestler in the Tool
City finals for the third straight year, but the Lancers did
manage to come away with five medals, two better than last
year. Seth Stonis probably had the best shot at making
the finals in the 189 lbs. weight class, but he suffered a
3-1 overtime loss to eventual champ, RJ Malson of Greenville.
The two were locked in what can only be described as an absolute
war, when Malson finally scored the winning takedown at the
edge of the mat just before the buzzer.
Stonis
opened the tournament on Friday by pinning Casey Chapman
of Saegertown in the preliminary round. He then pulled out
a scary 4-3 win over Indian Valley's Zach Knepp in the quarterfinals.
After the loss to Malson in the semis Seth bounced
back with a vengence, pinning his final two opponents and
grabbing 3rd place.
Tim
Wheeling may have been the Lancers most pleasant surprise
this weekend. The McLane freshman snatched a 3rd place medal
in his first appearance at 103 lbs. Tim beat JR Perry
of Howland, OH. 16-1 in the preliminary round, then knocked
off Ridgway's Corey Bush, 3-0 in the quarters. Wheeling suffered
his only loss of the tourney to the region's second ranked
103 pounder, Kalab Loht of Indian Valley. He bounced back
from that loss with a couple of wins to secure his first Tool
City medal.
Caleb
Baker took 4th place at 285. He won his first round bout
5-2 over Josh Yohe of DuBois, but lost in the quarterfinal
round to Joe Chittester of Ridgway by a score of 5-1. Baker
came back Saturday and posted three straight wins to make
the consolation finals before losing to Chittester again.
Doug
Myers placed 6th in a very tough 171 pound weight class.
He won his first two bouts on Friday. He pinned Maplewood's
Jason Peters in the opening round, and followed that up with
a 5-4 come from behind win over Conneaut Lake's Drew Ketchum.
Myers lost his final three bouts, two of them to the
number two and number five ranked wrestlers in the region.
Dalton
Lester chewed up his first two opponents on Friday. He
pinned Zac Morris of Corry and then majored North East's Kevin
Post 15-3. Unfortunately, Lester was forced to injury default
his final three bouts due to illness and settled for 6th place.
Paul
Scharrer, Zac Baumgartner, Travis Bryant
and Tom Nuhfer turned in great efforts at the tournament.
All four wrestlers posted 2-2 records and came within one
match of placing.
Hadley
Harrison was the last McLane wrestler to make the Tool
City finals. Harrison won the 140 pound weight class and was
named the tournaments oustanding wrestler in 2006. Harrison
beat two state medalists to win the title that year.
