Two McLane Wrestlers Crowned Fred Bell Champs

Two McLane wrestlers were perfect at this weekend's 29th annual Fred Bell Tournament in Grove City. Joe Wheeling went 5-0 and won the 106 lbs. weight class. With the exception of his finals match, Joe completely dominated his weight class. He won by fall in the pigtail round, posted a 15-0 technicall fall in the preliminary round, and then put together two major decisions. It was in the finals that Wheeling had his hands full with 21st ranked, Shane Jones of Stroudsburg. Jones scored the first takedown early and then rode Wheeling out for the remainder of the first period. Joe responded with a takedown in the second stanza to tie the score and finally pulled off a 3-2 victory when he escaped with one second remaining in the third overtime period.

DJ Myers won his second straight Fred Bell title. He also did it in dominating fashion. Myers posted a 15-2 major decision in the pigtail round and then had three straight pins to make the finals. In the finals, DJ posted 2-1 decision over Keystone's Tanner Hannold. Myers escaped in the second period and was clearly the aggressor on his feet for nearly the entire match. The winning point came for DJ when his opponent was finally called for stalling.

Tim Wheeling took 3rd place, losing only to McDowell's Steve Spearman, the state's top ranked wrestler at 138 lbs. Tim scored two wins by fall and posted an 18-3 tech fall over Redbank Valley's Ty Hanes before dropping an 11-6 decision to Spearman. Wheeling finished the tournament with back to back major decisions.

Keller Watkins placed 4th, winning three times, all by technical fall. Keller made it to the semifinal round before losing, 3-0 to eventual tournament runnerup, Willis Gruver of Redbank Valley. He bounced back with a win in the consi semis over Sharpsville's Joe Sofranko. Keller lost a close, 6-4 decision in the consolation finals to McDowell's Paul Deitz.

Ken Stoll wrestled a great tournament, placing 5th. He won by fall in the opening round, then lost to McDowell's Noah Burkhart. Ken put together back to back wins in the consis before dropping an 8-6 squeaker to Clarion's Jake Troutman in the consolation semis. Stoll won by injury default in the 5th/6th place wrestle off.

Chris Laird rounded out the GM place winners with a 6th place finish. Chris won his opening round bout, 4-0, then lost in the quarterfinals. He rebounded with back to back wins to make the medal rounds.

Parker McDermott came up just short of placing at Bell, but posted a winning record. Parker went 3-2 with a major decision and a fall to help the Lancer cause.

General Mclane finished 4th as a team behind McDowell, Stroudsburg and Redbank Valley.

The Lancers will be back in action on Wednesday, February 1st at McComb Fieldhouse against Cathedral Prep in the opening round of the District 10 AAA Team Duals. McLane is the number #2 seed. It will be interesting to see how well they perform considering all of the injuries that took place last week. Good luck guys.

News and Notes:

DJ Myers leads the team this season with a 29-1 record. Tim Wheeling is close behind with 25 wins. Tim Wheeling now has 115 career wins and DJ Myers 114. The two are nipping at the heels of Parker Middle Scool Coach, Tom Kirdahy who won 116 matches in his career.

Joe Wheeling not only got his 20th win of the season in the Bell finals, he moved in to 8th place on the 'Season Major Decisions' list. Joe has 7 this year.

Keller Watkins also passed the the 20 win mark for the season, finishing the weekend with a total of 21. Keller's freshman season is shaping up to be a very impressive one.

Chris Laird has had a successful sophomore campaign. Laird placed at both the Fred Bell and Tool City tourneys this year and has racked up 21 wins so far.

Lancers Lose to McDowell on Senior Night

The Lancers lost for just the second time this season to a very talented McDowell wrestling team on Senior Night at General Mclane High School. GM, minus four starters was only able to muster three wins against the 4th ranked Trojans.

McLane took an early lead when DJ Myers won a 4-3, double overtime decision over Tyree Spearman at 152 lbs. DJ escaped in the second stanza and held a 1-0 lead. Spearman responded with a third period escape to tie the score. Then a near disaster occurred when Spearman caught DJ off balance and briefly took the Lancer to his back. Spearman held a 3-1 lead at that point. DJ escaped 15 seconds later to cut the lead to 1. With 50 seconds remaining, Myers went on the offensive and was taking shot after shot while Spearman kept backing away. After Spearman was hit with a stalling warning, he backed off the mat again and was hit with the penalty point. That tied the score at 3. Myers won the bout when he rode out his opponent and then escaped in the second overtime period.

Chris Laird also pulled out a close win. Chris came screaming back from a 5-1 deficit to defeat Anthony Forne, 6-5 at 170 lbs. The only other Lancer win came at 106 lbs. where Joe Wheeling posted a 17-8 major decision over Benji Yates. Final score: McDowell-46 General Mclane-10.

The McLane wrestlers will be back in action this weekend at the Fred Bell Tournament in Grove City. The Lancer team took 2nd place at last year's Fred Bell. The Lancers are also the #2 seed for the District 10 AAA Team Duals next Wednesday at McComb Fieldhouse. They will face Cathedral Prep in the opening round. If they can beat the Ramblers, that would most likely set up a rematch against McDowell in the finals. Titusville is the #4 seed.

News and Notes:

As always, Senior Night is a night filled with mixed emotions. It's nice to see the seniors being recognized for their accomplishments and to hear of their future plans. But, there's a bit of sadness with the realization that it's their last time wrestling in front of a home crowd at General McLane.

Best of luck to our senior wrestlers: Tim Wheeling, Nate Ferrick, DJ Myers, Jamie Symanowski and Ethan Strobel.

Thanks to the McLane Wrestling Boosters and former Head Coach Mulholland for recognizing Coach Cook on Senior Night for his 100 head coaching wins. Click here to see a video of the presentation.

Jake Baker suffered a season ending ankle injury at last Saturday's Bison Duals. Jake was wrestling very well. He posted a 17-6 record and placed at the Tool City and Athens Tournaments. The team will miss him. We wish Jake a full recovery and can't wait to see him tear up the mats next year.

Even though the team score was lopsided, the GM wrestlers should be commended for their performance. They started 12 points in the hole due to two forfeits and five of the reamining bouts were decided by 2 points or less. It was apparent that both teams came to wrestle.

GM Wrestlers Take 2nd Place at Bison Duals

The McLane wrestling team ran it's record to 12-0 and handed Coach Cook his 100th career head coaching victory before losing in the finals to powerhouse, Pleasant Valley on Saturday at the Clearfied Bison Duals. The team finished the Duals tournament with a 4-1 record.

DJ Myers had a stellar weekend, going 5-0 with four pins. Also, unbeaten at the Bison Duals were Tyler Hendricks (5-0 with 1 pin and a technical fall) and Chris Laird (5-0 with 2 pins). Joe and Tim Wheeling both went 4-1. Joe's only loss was to Pleasant Valley's Kenny Yanovich (ranked 5th in the state). Tim's loss was to Montoursville's David Batkowski (ranked 4th in the state). Freshman, Nick Soboleski also went 4-1 with 3 falls.

The McLane wrestlers will take on a very tough, McDowell squad on Wednesday, January 25th at home on Senior Night. The Trojans are currently ranked 4th in the state by PA Power Rankings.

News and Notes:

Coach Cook joined Steve Samol and Tim Mulholland as the only three General McLane head wrestling coaches to reach the 100 win mark. Coach Samol retired after 10 years at the end of the 1974-75 season with 100 wins. Coach Mulholland retired after 12 seasons at the conclusion of the 2003-04 season with 137 wins. It's noteworthy that Coach Cook reached 100 win mark in less than eight years. Congratulations Coach!

Tim Wheeling now has 110 career wins. That ties him with Hudson Harrison for #9 on the all-time list. DJ Myers is #11 on the list with 108 career wins. Tim Wheeling and DJ Myers are also both in the Lancer top 10 for career takedowns.

McLane Wrestlers Move to 8-0 with Win Over Prep

The Lancer wrestling team stayed perfect on Tuesday with a 38-23 win over Cathedral Prep in front of a large, boisterous home crowd. It was McLane's first victory over the Ramblers since the District 10 AAA Team Duals in February of 2006, when the Lancers won the title.

GM took an 18-0 lead right out of the gate when the Ramblers forfeited 182, 195 and Jake Baker decked Jake Tucilla at 220 lbs. Prep got on the board with a major decision at 285, but Joe Wheeling added another six for the Lancers with a 1:24 pin over Chuck Bizzaro at 106. Prep won again at 113 and 120 lbs. cutting the lead to 24-11 in favor of the Lancers.

Nate Ferrick pulled out a wild, 5-3 overtime decision against Connor Wurst at 126 lbs. Tim Wheeling posted a 12-4 major over Teegan O'Sullivan at 138 and then DJ Myers sealed the deal with a dominating, 14-4 major decision against Andy Hutzel at 152. That win gave the Lancers an insurmountable, 35-20 lead with just two bouts to go. Chris Laird posted the final McLane win of the night with a one sided, 6-0 decison at 170 lbs.

The team will be back in action this weekend at the Bison Duals in Clearfield, PA.

News and Notes:

The Lancers and Ramblers could very well meet again in the District X AAA Team Duals which are slated for Wednesday, February, 1st at McComb Fieldhouse (5:00 PM).

Jake Baker has been on fire in January, he sports a 10-2 record in his last 12 bouts, including a 5th place finish at Tool City.

Tim Wheeling just moved into a tie with Cyrus Parlin for 10th place with career win 106. DJ Myers is not far behind with 103. Wheeling also moved into the #5 position for career takedowns with 242.

The win over Prep tonight was the 96th of Coach Cook's short head coaching career. With a little luck and some hard wrestling, he could reach the coveted 100 win mark on Saturday at the Bison Duals in Clearfield. Cook would be just the third head coach in McLane wrestling history to reach the centennial mark, joining Steve Samol (100) and Tim Mulholland (137).

GM Racks Up 7th Straight Dual Win

The McLane wrestling team racked up it's 7th straight dual meet win on Saturday over a very game Titusville squad. The Lancers won the match 48-12, but the Rockets fought hard, and were in nearly every bout until the end. Titusville struck first when D10's top ranked Cody Brunst decisioned Tyler Hendricks, 5-2 at 160 lbs. Chris Laird, Cody Lentz and Jake Baker ran off three straight wins to give the Lancers a 15-3 lead.

The Rockets bounced back with wins at 220 and 285 to cut the Lancer lead to 15-12, but those would be Titusville's last wins of the afternoon. Joe Wheeling made it 18-12 with a 4-1 decision over Calab Chase at 106 lbs. At 113, Keller Watkins stretched the McLane lead to 24-12 when he decked Austin Cartney. Ken Stoll and Nate Ferrick added wins by decision at 132 and 138 and Tim Wheeling picked up his 105th career win with a forfeit at 138. That made the score 39-12 in favor of the Lancers. Jr. High Wrestlers Win Second Straight Northwestern Tournament

The McLane Jr. High wrestling team won their second straight Nothwestern Tournament on Saturday in Albion. The Lancers won the title with 292 points, outpacing perennial powerhouse, Reynolds with 217 team points.

Dylan Myers, Hunter Hendricks, Justin Miller, Kyle Sult, and Ian Mallory all won tournament titles. Jon Carrier, Ethan Laird, Briggs Twitchell, Jacob Lenhardt, and Kendrick Storm-Bailey took runnerup honors. Cory Myers placed 4th.

The McLane Jr. High wrestlers have been tearing up the mats this season. They won the Mercer Invitational Tournament earlier in the year and have posted a 4-0 dual meet record so far this season.

Hunter Hendricks and Dylan Myers both sport perfect, 15-0 records with 13 pins each. Both wrestlers are on track to break the jr. high career falls record. The record is 34, which was set by Nick Soboleski last year. Myers and Hendricks already have 30 career falls each. Kyle Sult is also unbeaten so far this season with a 14-0 record (12 pins). Justin Miller is 13-1 with 8 pins, while Ian Mallory has 11 pins, Rick Chernicky and Ethan Laird sport 10 each.

Congratulations to the Jr. High team and keep it rolling!

Seven Lancers Place at Tool City

Three McLane wrestlers made this year's Tool City finals, the most since 2005 when four Lancers did it. In 2005, Branden Stearns won the 171 title and the GM team had it's best ever showing with a 2nd place finish. Unfortunately, this year's trio of finalists all came up short in the championship round and the Lancers were denied a Tool City champ for the fifth straight year. Hadley Harrison was the last McLane wrestler to snag a title at the Meadville tournament in 2006.

Joe Wheeling, Tim Wheeling and DJ Myers were the McLane finalists. Joe Wheeling had an opening round fall, beat Meadville's Aaron Ehrgott in the quarters and then posted a 15-0 technical fall over Conneaut Lake's Nick Moss. In the finals, Wheeling just couldn't seem to get his usual offense going as he dropped a 9-3 decision to 6th ranked freshman, Korbin Myers of Myers of Boiling Springs.

Tim Wheeling had an opening round bye. He pinned Warren's Drew Williams in the quarterfinal round and then racked up a 7-2 decision over Gabe Stark of Howland, OH. In the finals, Wheeling lost to McDowell's former state champ, Steve Spearman, 5-2. It was the third time Tim has placed at Tool City. He took 2nd in 2010 and 3rd in 2009. Tim was nursing an injury and unable to compete in last year's tournament.

DJ Myers posted a fall in the preliminary round, claimed a 4-0 shutout over Howland's Brian Whisler in the quarterfinals and pulled out a 5-3 decision over Nick Lees of St. Ignatius for his 100th career win. DJ lost by fall in the finals to two time state placewinner, Cody Copeland of Greenville. Myers placed 3rd at last year's Tool City tourney.

Keller Watkins and Jake Baker placed 5th. Watkins went 3-2 and Baker, 4-2. Rounding out the Mclane placewinners in 6th place were Deane Twitchell and Chris Laird.

New and Notes:

Congratulations to DJ Myers for posting his 100th career win. Myers became just the 19th Lancer wrestler to accomplish the feat. DJ also leads the team with 15 wins on the season.

Lancers Crush Corry Beavers

The Lancers lost the first bout against cross county rival Corry on Wednesday evening, but won six of the next seven to take a commanding 24-9 lead. GM had to forfeit the 220 weight class, but then won the last five, three by forfeit. Tim Wheeling and Nick Soboleski posted falls for the Lancers and Keller Watkins added a 17-1 technical fall at 113 lbs.

Parker McDermott ran his record to a stellar, 10-1 with a 5-1 decision over Cody Bailey at 145. Also winning decisions were Tyler Hendricks, Chris Laird and Jake Baker. Hendricks looked sharp in his win over Corry veteran Shane Taubert.

The McLane wrestlers will be back in action this weekend at the always tough, Tool City Tournament in Meadville.

News and Notes: DJ Myers is approaching the 100 career wins mark. Myers has 97 and should hit 100 at this weekend's Tool City Tournament. Tim Wheeling not only has 100+ career wins, the Lancer senior just moved into a tie for 5th place for 'career takedowns.' Tim has 231. The McLane wrestling team cracked the PA. Power Rankings top 20 teams in the state this week! The Lancers made their debut at #20. Erie's McDowell is currently ranked 4th. Three individual GM wrestlers are also ranked in the PA. Power Rankings. Joe Wheeling is #9 at 106 lbs., Tim Wheeling is #11 at 145 and DJ Myers is #21 at 152. Congrats!!!
