LANCERS NAB
2ND PLACE AT
NORTH ALLEGHENY TOURNAMENT
Nineteen
McLane wrestlers headed to the Pittsburgh area on Saturday
to compete in the 2021 North Allegheny Tournament.
Three McLane wrestlers made the finals and a total of 18
placed, to boost the Lancers to a runnerup team finish.
Jackson Spires came in as the number 3 seed at 160
lbs. but battled his way to a gold medal and beat two state
ranked wrestlers in the process.
Jackson
started the tournament by pinning Latrobe's Payton Henry
in the quarterfinal round. In the semis, he knocked off
11th ranked and two-time AZ. state runnerup, Collin McCorkle
of North Allegheny with a last second, come from behind,
5-4 decision. In the finals he avenged last weekend's loss
to #6, Chase Kranitz of Norwin. Spires controlled the bout
from start to finish and won the championship with a dominating
6-2 decision. GM's other tourney champ was freshman Magnus
Lloyd at 172. Lloyd became part of McLane history when
he met teammate, Cody Stempka in the finals. It was the
first time two GM wrestlers faced off in the finals of a
varsity tournament. Lloyd posted his third technical fall
of the year in the quarterfinal round, a 16-0 shutout over
Latrobe's Sam Snyder. He followed up with a 3-1 decision
over North Allegheny's Travis Stipetich in the semis and
then an 8-2 decision over Stempka in the finale.
Cody
Stempka made his way to the 172 lbs. title bout by registering
pins in both his quarter and semifinal matches, including
a pin of top seed, Ethan Mikovitz of North Hills, while
trailing 5-2 in the match. Cody's only loss on the day came
to Magnus Lloyd in the finals. Placing 3rd were, Ben
Watkins, Ethan Brest, Kyle Cousins, James
Laird and Wilson Spires. Spires racked
up two pins in his three victories and a 10-5 decision in
the consolation finals over Luke Rumpler of North Allegheny.
Wilson's only defeat came at the hands of 12th ranked, Tyson
Brophy of Trinity in the semifinals. Ethan Brest
pulled off a couple of close wins on his way to the 120
lbs. bronze. He opened with a 5-2 decision over Norwin's
Evan Gill, then lost by fall to top seed, Dylan Coy of North
Allegheny. He bounced back with a pin over teammate Ian
Salisbury in the consi semis and then posted a 4-3 decision
over Evan Gill in their second meeting.
Kyle
Cousins won three times on his way to a 3rd place finish,
including two wins by fall. His only defeat came at the
hands of 3rd ranked Nathan Ross of Greater Latrobe in the
semifinal round. Cousins secured the bronze when he upset
#3 seed, Nate Campbell of Norwin, 7-4 in the consi final.
Kyle's win over Campbell reversed a loss he suffered at
the hands of Campbell in last week's Mid-Winter Mayhem consi
semifinal match. James Laird advanced to the semis
with a 2-0 decision in his first match, but then lost by
fall to #2 seed, Logan Hoffman of Belle Vernon. Laird then
posted back to back wins, including a 2-0 squeaker over
state ranked, Corey Boerio of Latrobe in the consolation
finale. Matt Leehan also made the consolation finals
at 145 lbs. but dropped a 5-0 decision to state ranked,
Bodie Morgan of Trinity. Matt's only other loss was an 8-3
verdict to 10th ranked, Max Stedeford of North Allegheny
in the semifinals.
Also
placing for the Lancers were, Ben Watkins (3rd),
Chris Gillette (6th), Ian Salisbury (5th),
Jacob Zeiser (7th) Chance Kimmy (7th), Ryan
Dedrick (6th) Dan Mulligan (5th), Brandon
Dedrick (7th), Wyatt Hall (7th) and Shamus
Ford (6th).

Notes:
Wilson
Spires set a freshman record for falls in one season
last year with 23 and is showing no signs of slowing down.
He has 9 wins on the season and 8 of them came by way of
fall. Former GM wrestler, Caleb Baker owns the record
with 72. Wilson, less than half the way through his sophomore
year, could be well on his way to possibly shattering that
record.
James
Laird isn't far from breaking the 100 career win mark.
Chuck's win in North Allegheny consolation finals was his
91st! Speaking of 100, Matt Leehan has 114 career wins.
That moves him into 12th place on the GM all-time list just
behind former Lancer great, Tommy Kirdahy! Congrats
to Ian Salisbury on his first two varsity wins in
the tournament!

LANCERS SHUT
OUT DRAGONS
The
General McLane wrestling team made the trek to Warren on
Thursday evening and thumped the Dragons by a score of 76-0.
With a 13 man lineup, 76 points is just 2 points short of
perfect. Chance Kimmy got the team rolling with a
16-0 technical fall at 138 lbs. Matt Leehan, Ryan
Dedrick and Jackson Spires followed with three
straight pins.
Magnus
Llyod added another 16-0 tech fall at 172. James
Laird, Shamus Ford and Wilson Spires rattled
off three more pins for GM. Warren forfeited the next four
weight classes before Kyle Cousins wrapped things
up with another fall at 132 lbs. The Lancers are now 4-0
on the season. They will travel to the Pittsburgh area on
Friday for the North Allegheny Tournament.
Notes:
In
what may have been a first, the GM JV squad took to the
mat following the varsity and also scored a shutout over
the Dragons. Brady Haskins, Jessi Stempka, Cody Stempka
and Brandon Dedrick recorded falls and Luke Salamonsen added
an 18-3 technical fall.

GM PLACES
10 AT MID-WINTER MAYHEM
Ten
McLane wrestlers placed in the top 8 at the very tough Mid-Winter
Mayhem Tournament in Monroeville this past Saturday. Leading
the way for the Lancers were Matt Leehan and James
Laird with 3rd place finishes. Leehan started the tournament
with a bye in the quarters and then went 2-1. Matt's only
loss, a close 6-4 defeat, came at the hands of 12th ranked,
Kyle Buckiso of of Thomas Jefferson, in the Pool B final.
Leehan pulled out a 2-1 squeaker over Dustin Flinn of Forest
Hills in the consolation finals. James Laird also placed
3rd in the 189 lbs. weight class. Laird won his first two
bouts, one by fall and one by major decision, before dropping
a major decision to eventual champ and state ranked, Logan
Hoffman of Belle Vernon in the Pool B final. James pulled
out a 4-0 win over Norwin's Josh Page in the consolation
finale.
Jackson
Spires placed 4th at 160 lbs. in what may well have
been the tournament's toughest weight class. Spires won
his first two bouts, one by fall and a 10-4 decision before
running into PA. #2 and nationally ranked, Cole Spencer
of Pine-Richland. Spencer posted an 8-0 major over Spires
in the Pool A final. Jackson ended the tourney by dropping
a tough 7-3 decision to #6, Chase Granitz of Norwin in the
consi final. Freshman, Magnus Lloyd had to be the
most pleasant surprise for Cook's Lancers, taking 5th at
172 lbs. Llyod posted the best record on the day, going
4-1. He won his pool quaterfinal match with a 15 second
pin of Mount Pleasant's A. Mandacini. Magnus lost by fall
to Noah Gnibus of Mount Pleasant in the semifinal round,
but bounced back with big wins in his next two bouts to
make the 5th place match. Lloyd won that match by squeaking
out a 2-0 decision over Jacob Lukez of Pine-Richland. Placing
6th for the Lancers was Wilson Spires at 285. Spires
won by fall in his pool quarterfinal, before losing a wild,
11-8 decision to Pine-Richland's Joey Schenk. Wilson rebounded
nicely in his next two bouts, winning both by fall to make
the 5th place wrestle-off. Spires ended the day by dropping
a tight, 5-2 decision to Chad Metikosh of Belle Vernon.
Also
placing for GM were: Kyle Cousins (7th at 132 lbs.),
Wyatt Hall (7th at 215), Jacob Zeiser (8th
at 126), Chris Gillette (8th at 106) and Chance
Kimmy (8th at 138). The team placed 7th overall,
one place better than last year. The Lancers will be back
in action on Thusday the 21st against the Dragons in Warren.
Notes:
Matt
Leehan had one pin at Mayhem, running his career total
to 57. That ties him for 10th place on the all-time McLane
pins list with DJ Myers. Leehan now also owns 111
career wins which ties him with former GM great, Greg Leehan
for #16 on that list.
Jackson
Spires had the toughest row to hoe in the Mid-Winter
tournament. His weight class featured three wrestlers ranked
in the top 6 in PA. AAA, with one of them showing up in
the national rankings.
Magnus Lloyd is starting out his varsity career in
fine fashion. The freshman is sporting a 6-2 record, which
includes two pins, a technical fall and a major decision!
Keep it rolling, Magnus!
Congratulations
to freshman, Ethan Brest. Ethan won his first varsity
match in the first round of the Mayhem tournay! Wilson
Spires is on a roll when it comes to pinning his adversaries.
Wilson is just beginning his sophomre year and already has
5 pins after setting a freshman record with 23 falls last
season. James Laird is off to a screaming start with
a 6-1 record, including 3 by fall!

LANCERS START
SEASON BY SWEEPING QUAD!
The
GM wrestling team started the shortened 2020-2021 by going
3-0 on Saturday at home. They easily downed Northwestern
by a score of 69-6 and then knocked off Sheffield, 54-18
and then Corry, 45-24. The win over Corry avenged a one
point loss the Lancers suffered to the Beavers in last year's
District 10 Team Duals semi-final round.
Winning their first varsity matches for McLane were freshman,
Magnus Lloyd, Chance Kimmy and Jacob Zeiser. The freshman
did quite well for themselves, combining for 8-1 record.
Kimmy and Zeiser both went 3-0, while Lloyd went 2-1. Kimmy
was on fire, winning all three of his bouts by fall! Also
winning their first varsity contests were sophomore, Jessi
Stempka (3-0) and senior, Luke Salamonsen (1-1).
Five
other GM wrestlers went unbeaten on the day. Kyle Cousins,
Matt Leehan, Jackson Spires and James Laird went 3-0. Wilson
Spires was 2-0. The team will be back in action at home
on Tuesday in a rare matchup vs. Cambridge Springs. The
last time the two teams met was during the 1995-96 season.
The Blue Devils are coached by former McLane wrestler, Dalton
Lester.
Notes:
Matt Leehan had two pins to run his career total
to 56. That moved him into a tie with Ethan Laird for 11th
most 'career falls.' Wilson Spires, who set a freshman
record for 'season falls' last year with 23 also had two
pins on Saturday!
