Tim
Wheeling Bound
For Hershey
Stonis and Baker Medal
Tim
Wheeling has just two losses since dropping to the 103
pound weight class in early January and both losses came at
the hands of Indian Valley's Kaleb Loht. Wheeling dropped
a 3-0 decision to eventual champion Loht in the semifinal
round of the Northwest Regional Tournament on Saturday. But
it turned out to be the only bump in the road for the Mclane
lightweight. Tim dominated his other opponents, giving up
just a single point in three wins.
After
a first round bye, Wheeling posted a dominating 6-1
decision over Seth Spack of Punxsutawney in the quarterfinals.
He dropped the 3-0 decision to Loht in the semifinals, but
then put together a couple of shutouts to finish the tournament.
Tim knocked off 5th ranked Forrest Bechdel of Central Mountain,
4-0 and then clinched a spot in the PIAA tournament with a
5-0 white washing of 6th ranked Justin Giedroc of Bald Eagle
in the consolation finals.
Senior
Seth Stonis, who wasn't even listed in the top six
in the last issue of the NW Regional Rankings battled his
way to a 4th place finish in a very tough 189 pound weight
class. Stonis pinned Markel Keys of Cathedral Prep in the
opening round and then ground out a 3-1 decision over third
ranked Shane Krise of St. Marys in the quarterfinals. Seth
was clinging to a 1-0 lead late in the 2nd period when he
used a slick throwby to take Krise to mat. But it wasn't an
easy two points. Krise shifted his weight back into Stonis
and forced him to scramble off of his back to secure the bout
winning takedown.
Seth
turned in a great effort in the semifinals against second
ranked KJ Walters of Altoona, but came out on the short end
of a 1-0 decision. Stonis and Walters battled evenly for six
full minutes, the difference being a Walters escape in the
second period. The Lancer senior bounced back and secured
a spot on the podium with a 3-2 win over Londelle Cox of Peabody
in the consolation semis. Unfortunately Seth's hopes for a
trip to Hershey were dashed in the consolation finals by his
old district 10 rival, Josh Deeter of Franklin. Deeter posted
a 9-3 win in the finale.
Big
man Caleb Baker also took 4th at this weekend's regional
tournament. Baker won his preliminary round bout, 7-0 over
Shay Ceglar of State College, then lost to top ranked, District
9 champ, unbeaten Sean Owen in the quaterfinals. Caleb lost
by a final score of 10-3, but he kept it close until the last
minute when he was forced to take some chances.
Caleb
came raoaring back in the consolations with two straight pins
and an injury default win over Kris Tursky of Conneaut Lake.
He nearly grabbed the last ticket to Hershey, but lost 2-1
in the consolation finals on a very controversial technical
violation.
Zac
Baumgartner parlayed his 4th place finish at the district
tournament into a semifinal appearance. Zac posted a gritty,
1-0 decision over District 9 runnerup, Derek Burkett of Punxsutawney
in the preliminary round, then pinned District 8 champ, Jermaine
Grey of Peabody in the quarterfinals. Baumgartner's
run came to end on Saturday when he dropped a 5-4 heart breaker
to eventual champ, Tyler Parsons of Prep in the semis and
then lost to Zach Towers of Meadville in the consi semis.
DJ
Myers put on a nice performance for a freshman on Friday.
He ground out a 5-2 win over Clearfield's Andrew Hill in the
prelims, and then beat District 8 champ, Stephan Steedley
of Carrick in the quarterfinals. Myers dropped out of the
tournament after suffering back to back losses to top ranked
Jordan Rich of Central Mountain in the semifinal round and
Punxsutawney's 3rd placer, Kody Young in the consi semis.
Tyler
Bowers posted an opening round win over Rob Redman of
Langley in the preliminary round. He dropped his quarterfinals
match to top ranked, Mitchell Port of Bellefonte, but bounced
back with a pin against Matt Bussato of DuBois in the first
round of consolations. Tyler was knocked out of the tourney
in the consolation quarterfinals by Prep's John Agnello.
Travis
Bryant lost in the opening round to District 9 runnerup
Sean Sadowsky of St. Marys. He received an injury default
win in the first consi round, but then lost to Clearfield's
Andre Buck in the consolation quarterfinals.
Mclane
placed 7th as a team. The Lancers were in 3rd place at the
conclusion of Friday's action, but a dismal semifinal round
dropped them out of the top five.

NOTES
FROM THE NW REGIONAL AAA TOURNAMENT:
Tim
Wheeling posted his 31st, 32nd and 33rd wins of the season
this past weekend. Tim is 28-2 since moving into the 103 pound
weight class in January. Both of his losses came at the hands
of regional champion, Kaleb Loht of Indian Valley.
Wheeling
became the first freshman Mclane wrestler to qualify for the
state tournament since Phil Frndak did it in 1974. Tim also
shattered Hayden Harrison's 'Freshman Season Wins' mark this
year. Harrison posted 29 during his freshman campaign.
Caleb
Baker's 4 wins and 2 pins in Altoona moved him up in the
McLane Wrestling record book. Caleb's win in the consolation
semifinals was his 39th of the season. That put him in 6th
place on the all-time list. He also racked up his 24th and
25th pins of the season, which tied him for 3rd place for
most pins in a single season.
Baker
had a great weekend wrestling in Altoona, but was also the
victim of a bad call on Saturday, which may have kept him
from making the trip to the state tournament. Fortunately
the sophomore 285 pounder will get a couple more shots at
a state medal.
Team
captain, Seth Stonis's high school wrestling career
came to an end with a loss in the consolation finals on Saturday
evening, but not before the McLane senior showed his warrior
heart one more time. Stonis knocked off highly touted Shane
Krise of St. Marys, 3-1 on Friday and then battled on an even
keel with top ranked KJ Walters for six minutes. Seth lost
that match by a 1-0 score, but showed a lot of heart by bouncing
back in the consi semis with a hard fought, 3-2 win over District
8 champ, Londell Cox.
Seth's
career was interrupted by nagging injuries, but he still made
his way into the Mclane record books. His 37 wins this season
is 10th best all-time and he also made the Career Escapes
list. But more important than the numbers, is the fact that
Stonis was an outstanding team captain who led by example.
Seth always had a great work ethic, and he showed nothing
but class each and every time he walked off the mat. Seth
Stonis truly was the HEART of this year's McLane wrestling
team.

Tim
Wheeling Snags His First District 10 Title
All Nine Lancer Wrestlers Qualify For Regionals
Tim
Wheeling won the 103 pound weight class at this weekend's
District 10 Tournament and became the first General Mclane
freshman in 25 years to win a district title. The only other
freshman to ever win a District 10 title was Phil Frndak,
who did it in 1974 and then followed up with a regional title
and a 4th place finish at the state tournament.
Wheeling
also became the first McLane freshman to post 30 wins in a
single season. Tim eclipsed Hayden Harrison's benchmark of
29 when he beat Cathedral Prep's Adam Sallot in the finals.
It was Tim's 23rd straight win and he has put together a nearly
flawless 25-1 record since dropping to 103 pounds in early
January.
Seth
Stonis took runnerup honors at 189 pounds, losing only
to top seeded Josh Deeter of Franklin in the finals. Stonis
easily disposed of his first opponent, Warren's Colter Johnson
by a score of 15-0 and then won a 5-4 squeaker over Titusville's
Joel Kerr. The win over Kerr in the semifinal round was Seth's
34th of the season. That put him in the McLane record books
at #25 in the 'Season Wins' category.
Caleb
Baker also nabbed runnerup honors, losing a close one
to his old nemisis, Kris Tursky of Conneaut Lake in the evening
finale. Baker went into the 3rd period trailing 2-0 and chose
neutral in hopes of taking Tursky to the mat. Caleb made several
attempts but was unable to get a score tying takedown. Baker
added his 23rd pin of the season in the quarterfinals and
moved into 6th place on the all-time list. He also secured
his 35th win of the year in the semifinals, which put him
at #15 on the 'Season Wins' list.
DJ
Myers lost his opening round bout to eventual runnerup,
Kasey Davis of Meadville, but put together four straight wins
to take 3rd place in the 125 pound weight class. DJ pulled
off a couple of notable upsets on his way to the bronze. He
squeaked out a 3-2 win over 4th ranked Sam Juracko of Conneaut
Lake in the consi semis and then posted a one sided 7-1 decision
over 3rd ranked Kris Hess of Cathedral Prep in the consolation
finals. Myers lost both of his bouts against Hess earlier
this season.
Tyler
Bowers also took 3rd at 119 pounds. Tyler was upset by
Cathedral Prep's John Agnello in the semis, but pinned his
final two opponents to take the 3rd spot on the podium. Tyler
also took the bronze at last year's District 10 Tournament.
Also
qualifying for next weekend's NW Regional tournament with
4th place finishes were Zac Baumgartner, Dalton
Lester, Doug Myers and Travis Bryant. Bryant
had a couple of pins in the tournament bringing his season
total to 17, second best on the team.
Congratulaions
to Coach Hendricks who was named District 10 Jr. High
Coach of the Year.

Tyler Hendricks
Adds To Middle School Wins Record
Tyler
Hendricks posted a 5-0 record at the DuBois Duals on Saturday
to put an exclamation point on his record breaking season.
Tyler's final 2008-2009 season record is 31 wins against just
1 loss. Tyler also added 3 falls to his ledger, giving him
21 for the season.
Tyler
finished his Middle School career with a stellar 55 win, 8
loss record with 32 pins.
Congratulations
Tyler and good luck in the post season!
2-14-09
Tyler Hendricks
Breaks Middle School Wins Record
8th
grader, Tyler Hendricks won twice against Fort LeBoeuf
on Wednesday evening at Parker Middle School. When the smoke
cleared Hendricks had broken the McLane Jr. High single season
record for wins. Tyler now has 26 wins on the season, which
eclipses the record of 25 set last year by Ossie Bowers. Hendricks
also has 18 pins to his credit this year.
Tyler's
second win last night was the 50th of his middle school career,
which is also more than likely the most wins ever posted by
a middle school wrestler. Tyler's record over the past two
seasons is a stunning 50 wins, against just 8 losses with
29 falls.
Tyler
will have the opportunity to better his record this coming
weekend when the Middle School team travels to DuBois for
the rugged DuBois Duals.

Bisons Beat
Mclane 53-14 on Senior Night
There
wasn't much for G.M. fans to cheer about in Wednesday's loss
to a very tough Fort LeBoeuf team. The Lancers managed only
three wins in 14 weight classes as the Bisons cruised to a
lopsided, 53-14 win on Senior Night at General McLane.
Senior,
Seth Stonis wrestled his last match at home and treated
the fans to a typical, gritty Stonis performance by grinding
out a 5-0 decision over LeBoeuf's Lee Zeigler. It was Seth's
32nd win of the season, only a handful of Mclane wrestlers
have ever reached the 32 win plateau.
Tim
Wheeling's leadoff win was the only other bright spot
of the evening for the McLane wrestling team. Tim posted a
21-6 technical fall over Brandon Puckly for his 20th straight
victory. Wheeling is 22-1 since dropping to 103 pound weight
class in January.
Caleb
Baker got the only other Lancer win when he received a
forfeit at 285 pounds. LeBoeuf declined to send out Joe McIntire
who was injured, in what could have been the most competitive
bout of the evening.
The
Lancer wrestlers will be back in action on February 20th and
21st at the District 10 AAA Tournament at McDowell. This year
the top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to
Regionals.

Shorthanded
Lancers Go 2-2 At Jersey Shore
Saddled
by three forfeits in the middle of the lineup, the McLane
wrestling team won two and lost two at Jersey Shore this past
Saturday. The Lancers beat Coudersport 52-12 and Lake Lehman
31-24, but dropped decisions to Jersey Shore and powerhouse
Line Mountain.
Caleb
Baker and Tim Wheeling both went 4-0. Zac Baumgartner,
Doug Myers and Tyler Bowers all went 3-1. Paul
Scharrer, Seth Stonis and Travis Bryant
went 2-2. Bryant posted a couple of falls, running his season
total to 15, second best on the team.
One
bout worth noting this past weekend was Zac Baumgartner's
hard fought 5-2 loss to 7th ranked, Travis Erdman of Line
Mountain. Zac
put up a good battle against the state ranked Line Mountain
wrestler. It
was Baumgartner's only loss of the tournament.
Baker
and Wheeling have both been on a collision course with
the McLane records books. In fact, Baker just made the books
by posting his 20th, 21st and 22nd pins on Saturday. Caleb
now stands at #7 for most falls in a single season. Baker
also has 32 wins on the season, just a couple short of entering
the record books.
Tim
Wheeling has a very realistic opportunity to break a very
significant record. He only needs four more wins to break
Hayden Harrison's mark of 29 freshman wins.
Seth
Stonis passed the 30 win plateau along with Baker on Saturday.
Stonis has 31 wins, just 3 short of entering the GM books.
The
McLane wrestlers will be back in action on Wednesday against
a formidable Fort LeBoeuf Bison team on Senior Night at General
McLane.
