Lancers
Win First District 10 Title Since 2007
General
Mclane's wrestling team appeared to be in top form
this weekend as they rolled over McDowell and
the rest of the field to grab their first District
10 Tournament title since 2007. It was the
first time a GM team put 7 wrestlers in the finals
and advanced 12 wrestlers to the NW Regional Tournament
in Altoona. Five McLane wrestlers were also crowned
champions (matching the GM record of five set in
2006).
Joe
Wheeling, Mike Sutton, Tyler Hendricks,
Chris Laird and Alex Thayer all won
titles in their respective weight classes. Keller
Watkins and Hunter Hendricks also made
the finals. Ken Stoll, Ossie Bowers,
Jake Baker and Ian Mallory took 3rd's
and Deane Twitchell advanced to regionals
with a 4th place finish.
Joe
Wheeling won his first District 10 crown after
finishing 2nd the previous 2 years. Wheeling pinned
Prep's TaNauz Gregory in the semifinal round and
then recorded a solid, 3-0 win over McDowell's Charlie
Lenox in the finals. Mike Sutton went 4-0
and secured GM's second individual title at 152
lbs. Sutton pinned his first two opponents and posted
a dominating, 8-1 win over Strong Vincent's Dijon
DeBoe in the semis. Mike had his hands full in the
finals, but he pulled out a 3-2 decision over Prep
veteran, Dan Krysiak.
Tyler
Hendricks posted an 11-3 major decision in the
quarterfinals and survived a 3-1 scuffle with Titusville's
talented, Xavier DeRose in the semis. But Tyler's
shining moment came in the finals. With the team
score knotted at 202 between the Lancers and Trojans,
Tyler came out of his corner and proceeded to completely
dismatle McDowell's Kyle Rodgers. Tyler's 5-0 shutout
all but locked up the team title for the Lancers.
Chris Laird made sure there would be no McDowell
comeback when he beat the Trojans Andrew Bradley,
8-3 in the 182 lbs. title match. Laird preceeded
that performance with a couple of pins in the quarters
and semis. Alex Thayer put an exclamation
point on the Lancer's run down the stretch when
he pinned Warren's Chris McNeal in 57 seconds in
the 195 lbs. finale.
While
those five McLane wrestlers came through in the
finals, it was the superb performances of their
teammates in the later consolation rounds that put
the finalists in a position to win the team title.
Between the consi semis and consi finals, GM wrestlers
won 9 of 12 bouts, 6 of them worth bonus points.
Ossie Bowers bounced back from a disappointing
loss to Titusville's Ehrin Lee in the semifinals
to pull off a come from behind, 8-6 overtime win
against Prep's Connor Wurst. Bowers followed up
with a 16-3 major decision over Trent Zdarco of
Oil City in the consi finals. Ken Stoll also
rebounded from a frustrating loss in the semifinal
round with back to back wins. After losing to Meadville's
Zach Luben, Stoll posted a fall and then won by
injury default to take 3rd.
Jake
Baker and Ian Mallory also dropped decisions
in the semifinal round and then bounced back to
take bronze medals. Baker just barely missed making
the finals when he came out on the short end of
an ultimate tie breaker (3-2) against Warren's Alex
Steich. But Jake managed to recover and finish the
tourney with a couple of critical wins. Ian had
to go the distance in his wild consi finals battle,
but finally pulled off a 6-5 win over a very game,
Deontre Plott of East.
Hunter
Hendricks and Keller Watkins also made
the District 10 finals, but lost their last bouts.
Freshman Hendricks pinned Central's Kyle Nash in
the quarterfinals and then upset McDowell's Benji
Yates, 6-2 in the semis. Hendricks lost to Yates,
7-5 a couple of weeks ago at the team duals when
he made a mistake and gave up a 5 point move early
in the bout. Hunter made no such mistake this time.
Hendricks suffered his only loss in the finals to
3 time D10 Champ and state ranked (8th), Jake Gromacki.
Keller
Watkins recorded a pin over Brock Ridgeway of
Meadville in the quarters and then posted a 4-0
shutout over McDowell's Coleman Cousins in the semifinals.
Keller just missed taking the 126 lbs. title when
he suffered a 4-2 overtime loss to Warren's talented,
DJ Fehlman. GM's final place winner was Deane
Twitchell who took 4th at 132. Twitchell recorded
a major decision in the quarterfinals, but then
suffered a heart breaking, 2-1 loss in the semifinal
round against Prep's Beau Coletta. Deane bounced
back with a win by fall in the consolation semis
before losing another close one (6-4) to Titusville's
Dalton Burns in the consi finals.
All
14 McLane wrestlers posted at least one win in the
tournament. Jordan Motter went 1-2 at 120
lbs. and reversed a loss he suffered earlier in
the year to Warren's Seth Johnson. Briggs Twitchell
did an excellent job of filling in for the injured
Kyle Sult at 145 lbs. Briggs went 2-2 with one win
by major decision.
The
McLane wrestlers will be back in action on Friday
and Saturday, March 1st and 2nd at the Northwest
Regional Tournament in Altoona, PA. The top 3 wrestlers
in each weight class will advance to the PIAA Championships
in Hershey.
Notes
From the District 10 AAA Tournament:
It
was a lot of fun watching this team bounce back
from their only loss of the season two weeks ago.
It's not unusual for a team to have difficulty regaining
their composure after suffering a devastating, emotional
loss so late in the season. The fact that these
wrestlers were able to regroup so quickly and perform
so well, says a lot about their character. Congratulations
to the entire team and the coaching staff for a
job well done!
While
it was fun watching the GM wrestlers perform so
well, the icing on the cake was to see Head Coach
Ryan Cook named as the District 10 AAA Coach
of the Year! Congratulations Coach. You are
so deserving of the honor. I don't know anyone but
you who saw this team coming!
It
was also great to see Alex Thayer win a District
10 title his senior year. Though he wrestled quite
a few matches this year, Alex was basically used
in a utility role. He finally broke into the lineup
for the post season and he made the most of the
opportunity. He not only won the 195 pound crown,
he got the team some valuable bonus points with
a pair of pins.
I
also want to tip my cap to Chris Laird. Chris
has to be the most improved wrestler of the year.
In fact, it's rare to see a wrestler improve that
much in just one season. Chris went from placing
3rd at districts last year to dominating his weight
class in the tournament this year. I know there
was a lot of hard work involved. Great job Mr. Laird!
Tyler
Hendricks also deserves some recognition for
his fine performance at the D10 tourney. Tyler finished
3rd at last year's tournament after suffering a
heart breaking, 4-3 loss to McDowell senior Jimmy
Paulson in the semifinals. Hendricks had a close
call in this year's semifinal match, but this time
he came out on top and and finished the tournament
by taking the gold. Way to go Tyler!
A
trio of McLane wrestlers broke the 30 win mark this
weekend. Ossie Bowers finished the weekend
with 32 wins for the season. Joe Wheeling
and Chris Laird both have 30. Jake Baker
needs one more victory to join the 30 win club.
Joe
Wheeling also added a pin to his team leading
total. He now has 18 falls on the season and 92
career wins!
In
my opinion, the 2012-2013 Mclane wrestling team
should be ranked as one of the best of all time.
It's nearly impossible to compare wrestlers and
teams from different eras, but I believe these guys
rank right up there with the 1973-74 (14-0), 1974-75
(14-0) and 2002-03 (22-3) Mclane wrestling teams.

GM Wrestlers
Finish Regular Season at 15-0
The
McLane wrestling team beat Erie East and Central Tech
Friday evening at General Mclane on Senior Night.
Friday's wins clinched the Region 4AAA title
for the Lancers. They also did something no other
McLane wrestling team has ever done. They completed
the regular season with a 15-0 record. The last GM
team to finish the regular season undefeated was the
1974-75 squad that went 14-0.
The
Lancers beast East, 78-3. East only sent out four
wrestlers and GM won 3 of those 4 bouts. Keller
Watkins pinned Kevin Baeza at 126 lbs., Mike
Sutton won by fall at 152 and Ian Mallory
beat Deiontre Plott at heavyweight. All of the other
wins came by way of forfeit.
In
the second dual meet, GM beat Central Tech, 75-6.
Central managed just one win in the contest. Andrew
Welton (ranked 4th in the state) beat Ian Mallory
at 285 lbs. Joe Wheeling posted his 17th fall
of the season when he decked Gabriel Barnett at 106
lbs. Hunter Hendricks and Jordan Motter
followed with pins of their own at 113 and 120 lbs.
At 132 lbs. Deane Twitchell took a 4-0 lead
over Jordan Moffett before winning by injury default.
Ken Stoll secured his 20th win of the season
with a 7-4 decision at 138.
Briggs
Twitchell, Mike Sutton and Ossie Bowers
posted falls at 145, 152 and 160 lbs. and Chris
Laird pinned Seth Brown at 182. Keller Watkins,
Tyler Hendricks, Alex Thayer and Jake
Baker all received forfeits.
Notes
from Senior Night:
Congratulations
to all of our Senior wrestlers on a great season.
Tyler Hendricks, Leo Herrmann, Alex Thayer, Jake Baker,
Parker McDermott, Ossie Bowers and Zack Chestner.
The seniors wrestled their last matches in front of
a home crowd on Friday. Good luck in the post season!
Joe
Wheeling won twice on Friday. His win over Gabriel
Barnett of Central Tech was the 90th of his career.
Joe also leads the team with 17 pins. Ossie
Bowers leads the team with 29 wins this season.
Wheeling and Laird are close behind
with 28. Coach Cook finished the 2012-13 dual
meet campaign with his 119th head coaching win.
The
2012-2013 season has been a great one so far. This
is one of the most well balanced teams General
McLane has ever fielded. The only bump in the
road was the unfortunate loss to McDowell in the finals
of the District 10 Team Duals. Hopefully the Lancers
will make a big impression in the post season tournaments!

Lancers
Crush Oil City
The
Mclane wrestling team ran their season record to 14-1
and their Region 4 AAA record to 7-0 with a 72-3
win over the Oilers on Wednesday evening in Oil
City. Brandon Koehler and Hunter Hendricks
both won by forfeit at 113 and 120 lbs. At 126 lbs.
Keller Watkins posted his eighth technical
fall of the year with a 16-0 whitewashing of Trent
Hogue in less than 4 minutes. Deane Twitchell
also racked up a 19-4 tech fall at 132 over Zach Frazier.
Justin
Miller earned his third varsity win of the year
at 138 lbs. with a pin over John Beach. Briggs
Twitchell lost a close, 4-2 decision to Kurt Hargenrader
after bumping up to 145 lbs. At 152, Mike Sutton
got his 20th win of the season and put Mclane on the
board again with a 16-1 technical fall against Jake
Zdarko. Ossie Bowers posted a 10-5 decision
over Trent Zdarko at 160 lbs.
Tyler
Hendricks decked Brandon Stover at the 1:37 mark
to make the score, GM 42 Oil City 3. Chris Laird
tacked on another pin for the Lancers when he flattened
Eric Streeter in 27 seconds. Alex Thayer and
Jake Baker both received forfeits and then
Ian Mallory finished up the live wrestling
with a 47 second pin at 285 lbs. Joe Wheeling
won by forfeit at 106 to make the final score, 72-3.
The
McLane wrestlers will finish the regular season on
Friday at home against East and Central Tech for Senior
night. The action starts at 6 PM.
Note
From the Oil City Dual:
General
McLane's overall record is 14-1. However, their
regular season record stands at 13-0. If they
beat East and Central Tech on Friday they would be
the first team in McLane history to finish the regular
season with 15 wins and 0 losses. The 1974-75 Lancers
finished 14-0, but there were no team dual tournaments
during that time, which are classified as a post season
event.
Ossie
Bowers leads the team with 27 wins on the season.
Joe Wheeling, Chris Laird and Jake
Baker all have 26. Keller Watkins leads
the team with an incredible 8 technical falls and
now has 16 for his career.

McLane
Wrestlers Come Up Short at the District 10 Duals
General
McLane's perfect dual meet record came to an end
on Saturday in the District 10 AAA Team Duals finals
against McDowell. Coach Cook's team was prepared for
the battle from top to bottom. Hunter Hendricks
was back in the lineup and at 113, Ossie Bowers
dropped to 152 and Mike Sutton bumped up to
160 to test Tyree Spearman. On paper it looked like
the Lancers could pull off a big win against the tough
Trojans. But sometimes fate has it's way no matter
how well prepared you are. That was the case on Saturday.
The
first blow to the Lancers came when Hunter Hendricks
dropped a 7-5 decision to Benji Yates. Hendricks wrestled
a great match. He was very aggressive and nearly had
Yates on his back a couple times. Four of the seven
points Hunter gave up were in the first period when
he attempted to fight off a takedown and ended up
on his back. If it hadn't been for that one mistake
the match would have belonged to Hendricks.
Ossie
Bowers dropping to 152 worked out well. Ossie
dominated and then pinned Ryan Dailey at the 5:31
mark giving the Lancers their only fall of the dual.
But another blow came when Mike Sutton dropped
a 5-4 decision to Tyree Spearman at 160. The calculated
gamble to pit Sutton against Spearman looked like
it was going to pay off as Sutton was winning 4-3
late in the final period. But Spearman dropped in
on a double leg and even though Mike body locked Spearman,
the officials awarded a questionable takedown at the
buzzer.
The
third and final blow to GM's hopes came when Alex
Thayer ended up on the short end of a 6-3 decision
to Andrew Bradley at 195. Thayer had pinned Bradley
earlier in the year, but Alex just couldn't get him
locked up this time. McLane was trailing, 25-15 at
that point and their only hope was to get another
pin. At 220 pounds, Ian Mallory threw the kitchen
sink at Dakota McLean and tried his best to deck his
opponent. Late in the final period Ian attempted a
desperation headlock and got caught on his back. That
iced it for McDowell.
The
McLane wrestlers beat Warren 54-22 in the semifinal
round. Freshman, Briggs Twitchell got his first varsity
win, a 12-1 major decision over Bailey Pratt.
----------------------------
Notes
From the District 10 Team Duals:
I
thought Coach Cook made all of the right moves and
the team wrestled hard. In the end, the loss to McDowell
was the result of a couple of controversial calls,
a couple of mistakes and just some plain old bad luck.
McDowell and General McLane have two of the best
teams to come out of District 10 in many years
and on any given day one team could beat the other.
Saturday just happened to be McDowell's day.
Jake
Baker deserves a lot of credit for bumping clear
up to 285 lbs. to try to help out the team. Not only
did Jake bump up, he had to face the state's 14th
ranked heavyweight. Baker gave up somewhere in the
neighborhood of 90 lbs. and still somehow managed
to hold Scott Augustine to a 1-0 decision. Great job
Jake.
Ian
Mallory should also be commended for his effort.
He took a loss for the team when he attempted a desperation
headlock. Mallory had a commanding lead and could
have coasted to a win, but he knew his team needed
a pin, so he threw caution to the wind and went for
it.
Hunter
Hendricks wrestled very well considering the fact
he has been sidelined with an injury for nearly a
month. He nearly pulled out a win against a very good
wrestler. Deane Twitchell also wrestled tough against
Nick Gibson at 132. He managed to hold Gibson, ranked
9th in the state, to a win by decision (11-7). Kyle
Sult also wrestled well in defeat. Sult took Cody
Nolan the distance and only gave up a 10-3 decision
to state's 12th ranked 145 pounder. Nolan pinned Kyle
in their first meeting in December.
For
those who may not know this, the District Team Duals
are considered a post-season event. That means that
the McLane wrestling team is still unbeaten in the
regular season. If they win against Oil City next
week and beat East and Central, they would be the
first team to go undefeated during the regular season
since the 1974-75 team went 14-0.
The
Lancers will also most likely finish as the the Region
4 Champions since they won their regular season
dual meet against McDowell.
