Ian
Mallory and Hunter Hendricks Medal at PAJW Tournament
Two
middle school wrestlers, Ian Mallory (13 &
14/212 Lbs.) and Hunter Hendricks (13 &
14/112 Lbs.) placed at the 2012 PAJW State Championships
in Hershey this past weekend. Mallory,
who posted a 24-5 record (21 pins) with the jr. high
team this year, went 4-1 with three falls, including
one in the consolation finals over Brookville's Bryce
Town. Ian finished in 3rd place, his only loss
was to eventual state champ, Jordan Wood of Boyertown
in the semifinal round.
Hendricks,
who posted a stellar, 29-1 record (22 pins) during
the regular season, went 4-2 in the tournament. He
lost his opening round bout, but then bounced back
with three straight wins to make the medal rounds
before losing in the consi quarterfinals. Hendricks
finished the tournament in 7th place with a
3-0 shutout over Area V champ, Isaac Stewart of Marion
center.
Dylan
Myers, Kyle Sult and Ethan Laird
all came up just one win short of making the podium.
Kyle Sult came painfully close to placing.
He lost a close one to 5th placer, Taylor Cahill of
Conemaugh Township in the preliminary round and then
rebounded with a pair of wins in the consolation rounds
before losing a 3-1 heart breaker to 4th placer, Tommy
Provance of Connellsville.
The
Edinboro Wrestling Club sent a total of 11
wrestlers to the PAJW tournament this year. Gabe
Bayle, Braeden Soboleski, Daniel Bruce,
Andrew Brest, Jackson Spires and Brett
Mallory rounded out the Edinboro state qualifiers.

Joe
Wheeling, DJ Myers, Nate Ferrick and Tim Wheeling
Named to Erie Times All Region 4Wrestling Team
Joe
Wheeling, DJ Myers, Nate Ferrick
and Tim Wheeling were named to the annual,
Erie Times News All Region Team on Thursday.
Joe Wheeling (103) and DJ Myers (152)
both made the first team in their respective weight
divisions. Nate Ferrick and Tim Wheeling
were named to the second team. Ferrick got the runnerup
nod behind McDowell's Nick Gibson at 126 lbs. and
Tim Wheeling was the second team selection behind
McDowell's 2 time state champ, Steve Spearman. Spearman
was named the District 10 Wrestler of the Year.
3/22/12
Wheeling
Nabs 7th Place at PIAA Championships
Tim
Wheeling lost his opening round bout in Hershey
on Thursday, but bounced back to score three, one
point wins and nab 7th place in the 138 lbs. weight
class. Tim dropped a 4-1 decision to Tanner Wiltrout
of Connellsville in the preliminary round, but pulled
out a 4-3 decision over Adam Moser of Owen J. Roberts
in the 1st consolation round. On Friday, Wheeling
clinched a state medal with a 2-1 victory over Central
Dauphin's Nick Varndell in the 2nd consolation round.
On Saturday morning Tim lost to #3 Matt Cimato of
LaSalle, 5-1 in the consolation quarterfinals. Wheeling
finished his high school career with a 3-2 win over
Mikey Springer in the 7th place match on Saturday
evening. Tim scored an escape and a takedown on Springer
in the second period and rode out the Norristown wrestler
the entire third period.
DJ
Myers and Tyler Hendricks both went 0-2
and were eliminated from the tournament on Thursday.
Myers lost to Oxford's Ryan Montgomery, 6-0 in the
preliminary round and then dropped a 3-0 decision
to 5th ranked, Zack Voytek of Greensburg Salem. Tyler
Hendricks was beaten, 12-2 in the opening round by
#3 Brett Harner of Norristown and then lost, 7-4 to
#16 Mark Granahan of Scranton.
News
and Notes:
Tim
Wheeling is the third winningest wrestler in McLane
history with 126 W's. Only Hadley Harrison
(130) and Hayden Harrison (135) have more career
wins. Tim also has the distinction of being a 3 time
state qualifier. He joins Hadley Harrison,
Bill Kirdahy and Phil Frndak as the
only McLane wrestlers to qualify for the PIAA tournament
three times.
Despite
going 0-2 at the state tournament, DJ Myers
had a very successful season, winning District 10
and NW Regional AAA titles at 152 lbs. DJ is only
the 14th McLane wrestler to win a regional title since
the program's inception 50 years ago. DJ is also #4
on the all-time wins list with 124 career wins. He's
also one of just a handful of GM wrestlers to finish
the regular season with a single loss.
Tyler
Hendricks also went 0-2 at the PIAA Championships,
but he wrestled well against some very tough competition.
Both of Tyler's losses were to wrestlers who placed
in the tournament (Harner-3rd and Granahan-7th). Tyler
is only a junior, so hopefully he will be back in
Hershey next year for another shot at a medal.
It's
been a real pleasure watching DJ Myers and
Tim Wheeling wrestle these past four years.
Best of luck to both of you!!!

DJ Myers
Wins NW Regional Title
DJ
Myers defeated Cathedral Prep's Garrett Chase
in the NW Regional 152 lbs. finals and won his first
NW Regional title on Saturday in Altoona. Myers didn't
just win the title, he made it look easy. DJ racked
up a 10-0 major decision over Altoona's Connor Lesniak
in the quarterfinal round, then decked Tanner Patton
of Westmont Hilltop in the semis. In the finals, DJ
cruised to a 5-2 decision over Cathedral Prep's Garrett
Chase (33-4). Myers scored an escape and a takedown
early in the second stanza and then nailed Chase with
a wicked chin drop to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
Chase managed two escapes for his only points in the
bout.
Three
time state qualifier, Tim Wheeling made his
first appearance in the NW Regional finals and came
out on the short end of a 12-4 major decision, losing
to the state's top ranked 138 pounder, Steve Spearman.
Tim dominated his first three opponents by posting
two major decisions, a 10-0 white washing of Philipsburg
Osceola's Andrew Greenwalt in the preliminary round
and a lopsided 15-2 win over Vincent's Jared Carlson
in the semis. Wheeling added a 7-0 shutout over Joey
Miller of Central Mountain in the quarterfinal round.
Junior,
Tyler Hendricks earned a 3rd place finish the
hard way. Hendricks scored an 8-0 major decision over
Josh Cameroni of St. Marys in the opening round, but
lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champ, Brian
Brill of Central Mountain. Tyler bounced back with
four straight wins, including a 2-0 squeaker over
Philipsburg Osceola's Jeffrey Thompson in the consolation
finals.
Keller
Watkins just missed making a trip to the state
tournament with a 4th place finish. He posted a 17-8
major decision in the first round and then pinned
Dorion Dvaugh-Long of Allderdice in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Keller dropped a 4-2 decision to
eventual champ, Anthony Vizza of DuBois. Watkins bounced
back with a 5-2 decision over McDowell's Coleman Cousins
in the consolation semis, but then lost a 6-4 nail
biter to Prep's John Ciotti in the consi finals.
Joe
Wheeling failed to qualify for the PIAA tournament
after making it to Hershey as a freshman. Wheeling
lost his opening round bout in a most unfortunate
manner. He was leading, 4-2 when he got caught in
a cement job and pinned with just 11 seconds remaining.
Wheeling kept his hopes alive by pinning Carrick's
Vinnie Mion and then pulling out a 1-0 win over Logan
Blackburn. In the consolation semifinals, Joe faced
Bald Eagle's Travis Giedroc. He was trailing for most
of the match, but rallied to tie the score at the
end of regulation. Wheeling saw his season cut short
when he gave up a controversial takedown to Giedroc
at mat's edge with seconds remaining in overtime.
Deane
Twitchell and Ken Stoll both went 2-2.
Alex Thayer, who got an unexpected trip to
Altoona when Strong Vincent's Santos Guerra dropped
out, went 1-2. Thayer's win was a 10-2 major decision
over Punxy's Josh Neal. Chris Laird went 0-2.
As
a team the Lancers placed 5th behind DuBois, Bald
Eagle, Central Mountain and Regional Champ, McDowell.
The 5th place finish was the best for the Lancers
since the 2003-2004 season when Hadley Harrison,
Donald Osinski, Ashton Osterberg, Hayden
Harrison, Jake Keene, Travis Goss
and Branden Stearns won the school's first
and only NW Regional title.
------------------------
News
and Notes:
DJ
Myers' NW Regional title was the first for a McLane
wrestler since 2006 when Hadley Harrison won
it. With his 3 wins this weekend, DJ moved into the
number 3 spot on the career wins list with 124. DJ
is 39-1 on the season, his only loss came at the hands
of last year's state runnerup, Cody Copeland of Greenville
in the Tool City finals.
Freshman,
Keller Watkins came so close to qualifying
for the state tournament, it's painful to think about.
He nearly won his semifinal match and had another
opportunity to win in the consi finals, but Keller
came up just short both times. Watkins had a fantastic
freshman season and there's no doubt in my mind that
he'll be back and focused on winning a title. Keller
scored 5 reversals this weekend and passed 10 former
wrestlers, including his father to take over the #7
spot for 'Season Reversals' with 26. Keller also holds
the #2 spot for 'Season 3 Point Near Falls' with 35,
only Ashton Osterberg ever scored more 3 point near
falls in a single season (41).
The
106 lbs. weight class at regionals this year
was about as tough as I've ever seen it. There were
at least six top notch, evenly matched wrestlers in
contention for the three top spots. Joe Wheeling wrestled
hard all weekend, but he made just two mistakes against
quality wrestlers and both cost him dearly.
Tim
Wheeling made his first appearance in the regional
finals after placing 3rd twice. Tim has been dominating
opponents all year and this weekend was no different.
Tim's won-loss record is deceiving since 6 of his
7 losses came against McDowell's Steve Spearman. It's
quite an anomaly when two wrestlers face each other
that many times in a single season. Will it happen
again at the state tournament? Wheeling's win in the
semis was the 123rd of his career. He is now the 4th
winningest wrestler in Mclane history and he was out
with an injury for a substantial portion of the season
last year.
Deane
Twitchell wrestled his heart out all weekend.
Unfortunately, his sophomore season came to an end
when he lost a 3-2 squeaker to D10 runnerup, Paul
Deitz of McDowell. Deane will be back and in the medal
hunt next year.
Ken
Stoll had a very good post season run, he racked
up 2 falls and a major at the district tournament
and lost in OT to McDowell sensation, Nick Gibson.
Ken battled tough against eventual regional champ,
TJ Brandt of Altoona, losing 6-2 in the quarterfinal
round and lost a very close bout to third placer,
Lucas Besch in the consi quarterfinal round. Look
for Stoll to be back with a purpose next year.
I
have to be honest and admit that Tyler Hendricks
was not on my radar. Hendricks has been a solid performer
this year, but I didn't expect him to do any better
than 4th at regionals. Tyler was on fire this weekend.
He lost his second bout, but won five times, including
four straight, to qualify for the state tourney. Tyler,
I'm glad you proved me wrong! With his win in the
consolation finals, Tyler also became the third GM
wrestler to crack the 30 win mark this season.
Good
luck to all three of our PIAA qualifiers in Hershey.
