Robison
and Spires One Win Short of Medaling in Hershey
The
first day at the PIAA Championships was a tough
one for GM's state qualifiers. Andrew Brest,
Hunter Robison and Jackson Spires
all lost their first round matches. For Brest, it
was more than tough, it was disastrous! Andrew suffered
an injury during a scramble in his first bout and
was forced to forfeit his second match, which ended
not only his tournament but his high school wrestling
career.
Hunter
Robison lost his preliminary round match by
fall to 5th ranked, Noah Frack of Brandywine Heights.
But Hunter was far from finished. He bounced back
with two straight upset victories, one over #16
Brice Beatty of Mount Union. Robison used a front
headlock to take Beatty to mat, then hit a chancellor
and stepped over to score back points and take a
4-0 lead. He increased his lead to 7-1 when he escaped
and hit a dump in the 2nd period. Robison was finally
able to lock up a cradle and get the fall with 59
seconds remaining in the period. In the second consi
round, Hunter pulled off an exciting 10-8 overtime
win against #11 Easton Toth of Forest Hills. Robison
took a 4-2 lead into the final period. He reversed
Toth 23 seconds into the period to increase his
lead to 6-2. Toth came roaring back and tied the
score at 8 just as time ran out. But Hunter was
unfazed and won the match with a double leg takedown
just 8 seconds into sudden victory. His tournament
came to an end just one match short of making the
medal rounds when he dropped a heart breaking, 5-4
decision to #10 Gavin Bradley of Athens. Robison
held a 4-1 lead late in the bout but Bradley scored
a takedown and back points with just seconds left
to win the 5-4 squeaker.
Jackson
Spires lost his first match in the prelims to
last year's state champ, 4th ranked, Nathan Haubert
of Palisades by a score of 8-1. Jackson rebounded
with two straight wins, the first over #18 Marshall
Marfinetz of Girard. Spires took Marfinetz to the
mat early in the first period and rode him out.
In the 2nd stanza Spires reversed Marfinetz, locked
up a cradle and got the pin. He pulled out a hard
fought, 6-3 win over #20 Hunter Burke of Lake Lehman
in the second consolation round. The tourney ended
for Jackson when dropped a 10-6 decision to #8 Nick
Rosengrant of Saucon Valley. Spires trailed 6-4
at the end of two periods but fought out of a crab
ride, reversed Rosengrant and nearly scored back
points to tie the score at 6. Unfortunately, he
gave up a reversal and 2 backs with just 10 seconds
remaining.
Andrew
Brest lost his preliminary round match to #9
Cooper Gillham of Bald Eagle, 9-7. The two wrestlers
went to the second period tied 2-2. Andrew was riding
from the top postion when Gillham stood up, hit
a whizzer and then a headlock at the edge of the
mat. Andrew appeared to come down on his head and
neck. After an injury time out the two resumed wrestling
but Andrew didn't look like himself after that.
Gillham was holding on to a 6-5 lead going into
the 3rd. Brest cut Gillham loose to go for the winning
takedown but Gillham fought out of a front headlock
and dumped Andrew to take 9-5 lead with 1:15 remaining.
Gillham was penalized for locked hands and Brest
escaped at the buzzer, but it wasn't enough. After
the match, Andrew was taken to the hospital to get
checked out and his tournament was over.
---------------------------
Notes:
Hunter
Robison wrestled a great tournament, winning
two matches and nearly nabbing a medal in Hershey.
His two wins tied him with Joe Wheeling for
the freshman record of 35 wins! He also added a
pin, which gave him 21 for the year!
Andrew
Brest finished his high school wrestling career
with 112 wins. Only 12 GM wrestlers have won more
matches. He also holds the #6 spot in the record
books for career takedowns with 251. While it's
unfortunate that Andrew's high school wrestling
career ended with an injury, we're all thankful
it wasn't more serious. He suffered contusions and
trauma to the spine but is expected to make a full
recovery.
Jackson
Spires had an awesome sophomore season. After
missing his entire freshman season and more than
half of this season due to injury, he made the most
of what was left of the year. He was section runnerup,
bounced back to win a district title and finished
2nd at regionals. He wrestled very well at states,
just missing the medal rounds! He finished the season
with 15 wins-6 losses. Of those 6 losses, 1 was
by injury default, 2 were to regional champ, Caiden
Mooney and 3 to state place winners!
Matt Leehan, despite not making it to the
state tournament, finished his season leading the
team in wins with 36. He also made the GM record
books with 20 pins!

Three
GM Wrestlers Advance To Hershey!
A
trio of McLane wrestlers advanced to the 2019 PIAA
state tournament, which will take place in Hershey,
PA. from March 7th-March 9th. Hunter Robison,
Andrew Brest and Jackson Spires all
finished in the top four and earned the right to
battle for a state medal in their respective weight
classes. Matt Leehan took 5th place at 132
lbs. and will be an alternate.
Brest
and Spires made it into the regional finals, but
both lost and had to settle for silver medals. Andrew
Brest opened his tournament with a first round
bye and then registered a 7-3 decision over Titusville's
Seth Donovan in the quaterfinals. Andrew moved on
to the finals when he posted a 7-0 shutout over
Cole Bayless of Reynolds. In the finals, he went
head to head with 4th ranked, Logan Jaquay of Eisenhower
for the 3rd week in a row. Brest got the better
of Jaquay in the Section 1-AA Tournament finals
but Jaquay turned it around and got the win at districts.
In the regional finale, Andrew scored the first
takedown but that was all the scoring he would do.
Jaquay escaped and took Brest down to take a 3-2
lead into the second stanza. Andrew cut Jaquay loose
with a minute left in the 2nd to go for a takedown,
but Jaquay hit a low single and set him down on
the mat. Brest tried to fight out of it but made
the mistake of not bailing as soon as the takedown
was awarded to Jaquay. That mistake cost Andrew
not only the takedown but 3 back points. That made
the score 9-2 in favor of Jaquay. Andrew chose the
bottom position in the 3rd but was unable to escape.
Jackson
Spires also met a familiar opponent in the finals,
#11 Caiden Mooney of Northwestern. Mooney had scored
a 14-6 major decision over Spires in the section
tournament but Jackson shut Mooney out, 5-0 in last
weeks district finals. In the region final, Spires
started off the match by hitting a sweep single
but Mooney countered it well and the two scrambled
out of bounds with 50 seconds remaining in the 1st.
Jackson immediately went to the sweep again and
locked up a cradle. Mooney managed to belly out
of it but not before Spires got 3 back points and
took a 5-0 lead. Jackson took that lead into the
2nd period but Mooney looked like a completely different
wrestler from that point on. Mooney reversed Spires
in just seconds to cut Spires' lead to 5-2. Jackson
escaped and and then hit that sweep single again.
He locked up a cradle once again but Mooney stepped
over and scored a reversal. Mooney turned Spires
to his back twice after that and cruised to a 9-5
decision.
Hunter
Robison went 3-1, losing only to 12th ranked,
regional runner up, Owen Reinsel of Brookville in
the semis. After an opening round bye, Robison pinned
Mark Palmer of Brockway. After losing to Reinsel
he bounced back with two straight close wins to
earn the bronze! Matt Leehan won his first
round match over Gannon Jaquay of Eisenhower with
a 10-0 major decision. He was upset by #23 Ethan
Wyant of Redbank Valley in the quarterfianls. Matt
rebounded with two straight wins in the consis but
then fell to #14 Kaeden Berger of Reynolds in the
blood round. Matt finished his tournament with a
17-2 technical fall over Saegertown's Dawson Bartholomew
and earned alternate status at 132 lbs.
Seth
Yarger went 1-2 and James Laird 0-2 to
end their seasons. The team finished in 8th place
in a 42 team field. GM's three state qualifiers
will be back in action in Hershey on Thursday.
------------------------
Notes
From Regionals:
With
his 3 wins at regionals, Hunter Robison upped
his season record to 33-6. If he can win at least
2 matches at the state tournament he would tie Joe
Wheeling for the freshman record. Robison's pin
in the quarterfinals of the NW Regional Tournament
was his 20th of the season. He broke the freshman
record last week. His pin at regionals put him on
the list in the GM Wrestling record books for "Season
Falls." Only 18 GM wrestlers have registered
20 or more falls in a season and he's the first
freshman in the history of the McLane wrestling
program to ever make that list. Hunter also
is just the 7th freshman in GM history to advance
to the state tournament. Of those 7 freshaman,
all but one were coached by Ryan Cook! Phil
Frndak made it to the state tournament as a
freshman in 1974 and was coached by Steve Samol.
Matt
Leehan's season ended at the regional tournament
this weekend but not before he recorded his team
leading, 36th win of the season! Matt has 64 career
wins already and still has two high school wrestling
seasons remaining! With two pins at regionals, Matt
also made the 'Season Falls' list with 20!
Andrew
Brest won two matches and improved to 35-6 on
the season. He now has 112 career wins. That ties
him with former GM standouts, Branden Stearns
and Chris Laird for #13 on the list! Andrew
also moved into the #7 spot for 'Career Takedowns'
with 251.
