Paul Scharrer
Named Times-News
Athlete of the Week
103
pounder, Paul Scharrer was named the Erie Times-News
male Athlete Of The Week on December 24th, 2008 for
his performance under pressure at the GM vs. Conneaut Lake
dual meet on December 17th. With the team score tied at 28
and the match on the line, Scharrer beat Lake's Aaron Smith
in the final bout, 8-4 to secure the win for the Lancers.
It
was a great win for Paul because Smith had pinned him at last
year's dual meet between the two teams. Paul got a big takedown
in the final period and that was the difference. Congratulations
to Paul Scharrer!

Caleb Baker
Wins Jarvis Wildcat Title
Seth Stonis and Doug Myers Take Runnerup Honors

bringing his season total to an amazing 10 falls.
Seth
Stonis took 2nd place in the 189 pound weight class. He

placed second in the tourney. Myers went 5-1 with a pair of
pins. Doug suffered his only loss in the finals to last years
PIAA AA 6th placer, Garrett Morgan of Athens.
Dalton
Lester and Paul Scharrer both took 3rd place.

McLane Wrestlers
Pull Out A Nail Biter Over Lake
Conneaut
Lake and the Lancers battled each other evenly all the way
to end Wednesday at General McLane. It all came down to the
little guys. With the match tied at 28, Paul Scharrer
faced off against Aaron Smith at 103 lbs. Smith had pinned
Paul in last year's dual meet. It didn't happen this time.
Scharrer took Smith down and to his back early in the bout
and hung on for an 8-4, match clinching win.
The
victory was made possible by some great performances by several
other GM wrestlers too. Doug Myers pulled off an upset
against highly touted Dennis Diodati, who had beaten him twice
in the District 10 tournament last year. D.J. Myers
and Travis Bryant also helped the cause, both pinned
their opponents. Tyler Bowers pulled out a 13-8 overtime
win over Steve Knapp at 119, and Zac Baumgartner posted
a solid, 8-0 major decision at 135 lbs.
Dalton
Lester and Tom Nuhfer also deserve some credit
for their performances. Nuhfer wrestled well in a 3-2 loss
to veteran, Drew Ketchum. A very much improved, Dalton Lester
limited Lake to three team points by wrestling a great match
against PIAA Medalist, Matt Laird at 152 lbs.
The
team's win was also noteworthy because it was the 450th
victory for the General McLane wrestling program since
it began in 1961. The team will travel to Athens, PA. this
Friday for the two day, Jarvis Wildcat Memorial Invitational
Tournament.

GM Beats McDowell
at War at the Shore
Minus
several starters, the McLane matmen pulled it together and
still managed to beat McDowell in the first match at Friday's
4th Annual War at the Shore. Ryan Ruth set the
tone for the evening when he got a big pin in a swing match
at 145 lbs. in the opening bout.
After
McDowell tied the match with a forfeit win at 152, Tommy
Nuhfer got the first of seven straight McLane wins when
he rolled over Bobby Ferguson by a score of 15-4. Then Doug
Myers, Seth Stonis, Travis Bryant, Caleb
Baker, Paul Scharrer and Tim Wheeling all
got wins in succession to give the Lancers an insurmountable
41-6 lead.
The
Trojans rattled off four straight wins of their own to close
the gap to 41-26, before Zac Baumgartner wrapped it
up for the red and white, with a hard fought, 3-2 decision
over Mike Volant at 140 lbs. McLane got pins from Ryan Ruth,
Travis Bryant, Tim Wheeling and Caleb Baker. Baker's pin was
the sixth straight for the unbeaten Lancer heavyweight.
The
team's next win will be a big one, it will mark the wrestling
programs 450th since it began in the early 1960's. The McLane
wrestlers will be back in action trying to get that big win
next Wednesday against a tough Conneaut Lake squad at home.

Lancer Matmen
Miss Winning Mountaineer
Tournament Title By A Single Point!
The
GM wrestlers may be young, but they nearly won the Mountaineer
Tournament this year with four individual champions. In the
end they just couldn't overtake Corry, who also had four champs
and snagged the title by one point, 164 to 163.
Dalton
Lester, Doug Myers, Seth Stonis and Caleb
Baker all took top honors at this year's Tournament. Baker
pinned his way through the 285 pound weight class. Dalton
Lester also had a great tournament, posting 3 falls and 2
major decisions. Doug Myers had to be pleased at winning his
title after placing 5th last year. Seth Stonis cruised through
his weight class after placing 2nd last year.
Paul
Scharrer and Zac Baumgartner both took runnerup
honors, losing only in the finals.
