Gil Troutman's 1983-84 wrestling team did
not have a great season. They finished with a 5-11 record.
Troutman may not have suspected it at the time, but this
crop of underclassmen were in the process of turning into
one of McLane's finest teams ever.
In just two short years, Matt Caro, Mike
Caro and J.J. Brown would help propel the 85-86 Lancer wrestling
team to their highest place ever (3rd) at the PIAA State
Tournament.
The 1983-84 team did have it's share of
top-notch wrestlers. Senior, Eric Groendahl finished a fine
career by winning 35 matches. He placed 2nd at Sections
and Districts, 3rd at Regionals and went 1-2 at the State
Tournament.
Senior, John Gates had a great year and
finished with a 28-10 record. Sophomore Matt Caro was a
year away from being sensational, finishing a solid 19-10
...and who would've suspected that a young freshman, with
just an 11-15 record would become General McLane's next
state wrestling champ (Bradd Weber).
The 83-84 Lancer wrestlers were definitely
a team on the rise!
