Lancers Beat Wildcats 50-16

The Lancer wrestlers speared the Wildcats on Wednesday evening at Northwestern High School. John Heynoski gave Kevin Enders all he could handle in the 103 pound match up. Heynoski was in a tight match with Enders when he threw in a cradle. Unfortunately, Enders rolled through and caught Heynoski for the fall.

Tim Shrout evened things up for the Lancers. He built an 14-0 lead and then finished it with a fall of his own at 4:24. Jake Keene dominated his opponent, scoring a 16-0 technical fall. Nate Saraceno followed Keene and showed Ken Keidasch the lights at the 1:36 mark. After Hayden Harrison was awarded a forfiet, Ward McCracken continued his winning ways with a 1:39 pin of Jake Young at 140 pounds.

Hudson Harrison had his hands full with stubborn Zack Shafer. Shafer didn't mount much of an offense, but proved to be a dangerous opponent, nearly catching Harrison in a couple of rolls. Hudson wrestled a smart match and prevailed 5-2. Ryan Dunlap and Northwestern's Adam English put on the scoring show of the evening. Dunlap body-locked English and took him to the mat early in the match, but a controversial slam call nullified the takedown. English was also called for a slam later in the match. English came out on top of the wild affair with a 10-8 decision.

Branden Stearns and Jason Dersch went to the second period of their match tied 0-0. But Stearns turned it on and showed Dersch the lights 47 seconds into the 2nd period. Pat Knaus was upset by a determined Seth Rotco 6-4.

Travis Goss had a more than he could handle, losing to Matt Duda. Goss was in on Duda's legs right off the whistle, but couldn't finish the takedown and ended up on his back. He managed to fight off two more pin attempts, but Duda won a 15-3 major decision. Wayne Gormont finished the rout with a fall over Larry Skeel at 4:50.

GM Wrestlers Finish 5th at Seneca Valley Tournament

The McLane wrestlers made a great showing at the tough Seneca Valley Tournament on Staurday, finishing in 5th place. The tournament showcased many state ranked wrestlers from western Pennsylvania. The Lancer team effort was led by Hudson Harrison's 2nd place finish. Hudson beat Carl Snodgrass of Ringgold in the opening round, then decisioned Scott Hall of Clearfield 4-0. In the semi-finals, Hudson won by technical fall over Kevin Clark of West Branch 17-2. In the finals, Hudson was ahead of Zack Maier (Canon-McMillan) 6-3, before getting caught in a bad position and pinned. Overall, Hudson wrestled very well at the tournament.

Ward McCracken looked like his old self, losing only in the opening round to top ranked Joe Santino of Ringgold. McCracken then rattled off 4 straight wins. He shut out Mike Bedwan of Fox Chapel 5-0, pinned Dan Henry (Belle Vernon) and then pinned Lance Greenwood of McKeesport. In the consolation finals, Ward had his hands full with Kirk Campbell of West Allegheny. Ward was down by 2 points in the 3rd period, but rallied for a heart-thumping 6-5 win.

Hayden Harrison, Branden Stearns and Pat Knaus rounded out the Lancer place winners by finishing 4th. The entire team did a great job and helped add to the team point total, but my pick for GM Wrestler of the Tournament... is Freshman, Branden Stearns. Stearns was at his best in this tournament. He beat Senior, Zack Senft from Seneca Valley, lost to Junior, Jared Ricotla 5-2, won by forfiet and decisioned Junior, Steve Steadiak of Kiski to make the consolation finals. Stearns wrestled his heart out in the consy finals, only to end up on the short end of a controversial 1-0 decision to Senior, Dave Thompson of Greater Latrobe.

Bisons Squeak Past Lancers 32-25

The Lancer wrestlers came up just short of winning their first Erie County Crown since 1996-97, Wednesday evening against Ft. LeBoeuf. The McLane lightweights all wrestled well against highly ranked opponents. Jake Keene nearly pulled off the upset of the evening by putting Jeff O'Connell on his back just before the buzzer. Keene was only awarded 2 back points and that proved to be the difference, as he came out on the short end of a 9-8 decision.

The score was 17-0 when Luke Harrison scored the first McLane team points with a fall at 1:02. Hayden Harrison got a 10-0 major decision at 135 to make the score 17-10. The Bisons went back up by 10 points when Josh Randall won a hard fought 4-3 decision over Ward McCracken. Hudson Harrison followed with a 10-3 win. That got G.M. to within 7 points again, but the Lancers couldn't close the gap.

Brandon Kula avenged a Tool City loss to Ryan Dunlap with a 4-1 win. At 160, Jake Fiske bested Branden Stearns 9-2. Pat Knaus then battled tough against 2nd ranked (D-10) Tony Hammer and was leading 4-2 near the end of the second period. But Hammer turned it on in the 3rd period. He caught Knaus on his back and got the pin at 4:52. That sealed the the match for LeBoeuf, putting them up 32-13.

The Lancers came on strong in the last two matches. Travis Goss was down by one point in the second period when he scored a takedown and slapped a cradle on his opponent, pinning him at the 3:14 mark. Wayne Gormont got a pin at 4:45 after a wild match that went back and forth. Final score 32-25.

Lancers Whip Central and Meadville at Tri-Meet

The GM wrestlers, in a warm up for Wednesday night's showdown with Ft. LeBoeuf, easily handled Central and Meadville in a Saturday morning Tri-Meet. Going 2-0 for the Lancers were John Heynoski, Tim Shrout, Jake Keene, Luke Harrison, Hayden Harrison, Hudson Harrison, Ryan Dunlap and Brandon Stearns. Shrout and Dunlap each had a pair of pins for the Lancers.

Ward McCracken and Wayne Gormont both provided heart stopping matches. Ward lost his first match of the year to Matt Baker of Meadville in a 3-3 double overtime rideout. McCracken had the stubborn Baker on his heels the entire match but couldn't get a crucial takedown. Ward nearly reversed the Bulldog in the final overtime period, but ran out of time. Wayne Gormont won a tight 4-3 decision over Joe Welton in the morning's other exciting match.

Pat Knaus ran into Doran Heist of Meadville (ranked 4th in the state). Heist was too much for Knaus and posted a 20-8 major decision. Travis Goss, in his varsity debut had more than he could handle against Meadville's Nate Baker. Baker (ranked 3rd in D-10) took Goss down several times before posting a pin at the 2:29 mark.

In the other dual match of the day, Meadville heavyweight Nate Baker pinned Central's Joe Welton. Baker's pin sealed a come-from-behind 34-33 win for Meadville. The Lancers will be back in action Wednesday evening at home against rival Fort LeBeouf. The winner of that match will more than likely become this year's Erie County League Champions.

GM Flattens Harborcreek Huskies 66-7

The GM wrestling team looked like legitimate contenders for the County Title Wednesday at Harborcreek. The Lancers crushed the Huskies 66-7. Harborcreek was never in the match. McLane took a quick 12-0 lead on forfiets in the first two weight classes.

What followed was a match Harborcreek would probably like to forget. Adam Wrotney looked like he would dominate Jake Keene when he took a 5-0 lead into the second period. But Keene turned the tables on Wrotney 30 seconds later and showed him the lights.

Corey Brainard was too much for Nate Saraceno, posting a 16-5 major decision. Then the Lancers began their run. Luke Harrison took a 13-0 lead into period two and then won by 15-0 technical fall over Mike Abbey, Hayden Harrison pinned Eric Wrotney in 3:30, Paul Hayes dominated his opponent, before pinning him at the 3:09 mark and Hudson Harrison won by fall over Justin Space at 2:31.

The Huskies briefly interrupted the string of victories when Pino Scavella upset Ryan Dunlap 5-3. But Brandon Stearns got the Lancers back on track. Stearns had a battle on his hands in the first period, but finally caught Andy Benson on his back and pinned him at the 1:39 mark. Josh Grabski picked up the third forfiet of the night for G.M. Then big Wayne Gormont pinned a much bigger Tyler Shaffer at 2:23.

Four GM Matmen Place at Tool City

The GM Wrestling team had 4 place winners at the Tool City Tournament on Saturday. Hayden Harrison placed 2nd at 130 lbs., losing to Nick McElhinney of Cochranton in the finals. McElhinney is ranked 2nd in the state and has won every match this season by either a pin or technical fall. Hayden wrestled extremely well, taking McElhinney down 5 times (the most takedowns the Cardinal has suffered in a match this season).

The score was tied 11-11 when McElhinney caught Hayden in a flurry and decked him at 4:54. It was only the second time McElhinney has been taken into the 3rd period this season. Hayden won his preliminary match against Luke Durant of Clearfield 14-7, bested Nate Zameroski of Ridgway 11-6 and then posted an 12-6 decision over Tyler Middleton of Reynolds in the semi-finals.

Hudson Harrison placed 2nd at 145 lbs., losing to Chartiers Valley's Mark Kirsopp 12-7. He wrestled a gutsy match and never quit against a very talented opponent. Hudson beat Matt Cook of Warren 13-0 in the preliminary round, decisioned John Svirbly of Reynolds 7-4 in the quarter-finals and beat Brian Mulligan of Maplewood in the semis.

Pat Knaus placed 6th at 171. Pat wrestled a great tournament, winning a 6-3 decision in the preliminary round, then losing a close match in the semi-finals 4-3. He lost in the 5th/6th place wrestle off to Brian Hart of Cochranton.

Wayne Gormont placed 5th at 275, winning his final match by pin at 3:54 over Eric Schmidt of DuBois. Wayne won his prelim match by pin over Brandon Smith, then lost to eventual runner-up Andy Kuzma of Corry in the quarter-finals. He fought his way back into the consolation semis before dropping a 4-3 heart-breaker to 3rd place finisher, Mike Hills of Reynolds.

Luke Harrison won his preliminary bout by fall over Prep's Jeff Wozniak, before falling in the quarter-finals to state-ranked (2nd), Justin Hollobaugh of Reynolds 13-2. Luke then lost, one match short of the medal round, by a 5-3 score.

Brandon Stearns also wrestled well in the tournament. The talented freshman won his first match over Chris Kosiarski of Prep 5-1, then lost in the quarter-finals to eventual champion Jim Gibson of Kennedy Christian, by a close 6-2 score. Brandon also came up just short of placing.

Chartiers Valley won the team championship with 201.5 team points. General McLane placed 7th with 109 points, just ahead of rival Ft. LeBouef.

The AAA Outstanding Wrestler award went to last year's state runner-up, Mark McNight of Chartiers Valley. The AA Outstanding Wrestler was Nick McElhinney of Cochranton. Hayden Harrison scored the most takedown in the tournament (17).

GM Wrestlers To Be Tested at the Tool City Tournament

With 24 state place winners from last year taking to the mat, the GM wrestlers can plan on some tough wrestling at the Tool City Tournament this weekend. This particular tournament has gained the reputatiion as the toughest local wrestling tournament of the year.

A few of the local top seeds include Titusville's Todd Mowery (119), Cochranton's Nick McElhinney-Griifin (135) and Chris Hogue (160), Meadville's Doran Heist (171) and Maplewood's Matt Wilcox (189).

Top G.M. seeds going into the tournament are Hudson Harrison (145) 2nd and Hayden Harrison (135) 3rd. Hudson was a runner-up at last year's event. There are only 3 returning individual champs in this year's tournament: Reynolds' Justin Hollobaugh, Titusville's Todd Mowery and Meadville's Doran Heist.

The team title is expected to be a tight battle between Chartiers Valley, Reynolds, Prep, Fort LeBoeuf, Titusville and Cochranton. But, the Lancers may surprise the experts with some great wrestling of their own.

Luke Harrison, Pat Knaus, and Brandon Stearns have all been wrestling well. Paul Hayes, Ryan Dunlap and Tim Shrout are also on the rise and could pull off a few surprises.

Wrestling gets underway Friday at 3:30 and will continue until 10:30 PM. Wrestling will resume Saturday morning at 9 AM and continue into the afternoon. The Consolation Finals and Finals will be wrestled at the same time and are slated for Saturday at 6:30.
