Lancers Score Win Number 20 Against Rockets

The GM wrestlers were banged up Thursday evening, but still managed to get the job done. Minus starters Hadley Harrison, Jake Keene and Paul Hayes, the Lancers whipped the Titusville Rockets 55-15.

The match started at 103 (believe it or not) where Ashton Osterberg received a forfiet. The Rockets got a fall at 112, making the score 6-6. Tim Shrout got things rolling for the Lancers with a fall over Jeff Wright. Don Osinski followed with a pin of Joe Snyder (ranked 4th in D-10 AAA) at 1:19.

Luke Harrison used his cross-face cradle to deck Shane Kuberry in 56 seconds. Kyle Feikles pulled an 8-2 win over 2nd ranked (D-10) Jason Bimber and won his 20th bout in the process. Hayden Harrison remained unbeaten (29-0) by pinning Jake Bell. Dusty McCord impressed the crowd in his varsity debut by hitting a jap whizzer and taking Shane Klingler to the mat for a 2-0 lead. But Klingler fought back and got the win at 145 lbs. for Titusville.

Hudson Harrison scored a 12-3 major decision over a game Dan Sullivan at 152 lbs. Ryan Dunlap used a couple of takedowns, an escape and back points to whip Levi Sheter. Branden Stearns shut out Matt Burt 6-0 at 171 to make the score GM-43 Titusville-12.

Josh Grabski took Dustin Vanclse right to the mat and pinned him in a body scissors combination at the 1:11 mark. Titusville got one more win at 215 when 4th ranked (D-10) Dan Sullivan pulled out a 4-3 decision over Travis Goss. Wayne Gormont received a forfiet at 275 to make the final score GM-55 Titusville-15.

The wrestlers will be back in action next Wednesday against Seneca, for their final County League match. Then the team will head to Hershey for the PA. Team Dual Championships.

McLane Wins D-10 Team Title

The McLane Wrestlers won the District 10 team title Tuesday evening at McComb Fieldhouse by beating McDowell and then Erie Prep in the finals. Neither win came easily and both had unexpected heros.

The Lancers were down 11-0 to McDowell in the semi-final match before they got on the board with a pin by Hayden Harrison at 140 lbs. The Trojans came right back with a major decision at 145 and made the score 15-6. Hudson Harrison and Ryan Dunlap racked up a couple of pins at 152 and 160 to put the Lancers ahead for the first time 18-15. Branden Stearns added a major decision at 171. Josh Grabski pushed one of the distrct's top wrestlers, Mark Anthony to the limit at 189 lbs. but came out on the short end of an 11-9 decision.

Travis Goss had a key win at 215 lbs. McDowell's James West had beaten Goss 8-5 at a dual meet earlier in the week and McDowell was counting on a repeat performance. They didn't get it. West took a 6-3 lead in the match, but Goss came back and tied it 6-6, sending the bout into overtime. West made an attempt at a takedown, but Goss countered him and spun around for 2 points to win the match. McLane 25 McDowell 18.

McDowell would pull to within one point (25-24) with Ryan Marovich's pin at 275, but that would be as close as they would get. Hadley Harrison and Jake Keene both got falls to put GM up 37-24 and clinch the match. McLane forfieted the 119 lbs. weight class. Final score...GM-37 McDowell-30.

That sent McLane into the finals against perrenial powerhouse and number one seeded Cathedral Prep. It would turn out to be one of the most exciting matchups of the year. Prep took a 3-0 lead when Brad Crolli edged Tim Shrout 4-3 at 125 lbs. The Lancers came back and won the next 3 matches to make it 13-3 McLane. Hudson Harrison pulled out a 13-10 win over Jon Wentz and Ryan Dunlap beat Kevin Deiner 11-5 to give the Lancers a 19-7 lead, but then Prep released it's big guns.

Branden Stearns lost 3-2 in a valiant effort against Sean Connole to make it 19-10. State ranked Nick Voelker won for Prep, making the score 19-14. Prep gambled and sent out Dave Gnacinski at 215 and their state ranked 215 pounder at heavyweight, in an attempt to get two pins. They only got one. Gnacinski got a fall in 51 seconds at 215, but Wayne Gormont wrestled a great match against Koziarski, losing 10-4 and only giving up 3 team points.

Prep led 23-19, but the Lancers were still in the match. Hadley Harrison pulled out a 5-1 win over Kory Hiner to pull the Lancer to within one point of the Ramblers. Prep-23 McLane-22. Jake Keene pinned John Heynoski at the 3:05 mark to give the GM wrestlers a 28-23 lead. Prep still had a chance to win at that point when they sent out veteran Josh Garrity against Freshman, Don Osinski.

All Osinski had to do was avoid getting pinned to give his teammates the win. But he had other ideas. Garrity took Osinski down in the first period and put him in a cradle, but Osinski powered out of it, turned Garrity and nearly got the fall. The two traded leads until Osinski wore Garrity down and pinned him at 5:23. Final Score...General McLane-34 Prep-23.

The win earned the McLane Wrestlers the right to compete in the state duals in Hershey, February 7th and 8th.

Other notes: Hudson Harrison now has 95 career wins. Hayden Harrison is still unbeaten at 28-0 and has 86 career wins. He is also closing in on Tom Kirdahy's career takedown record.

Tuesday's wins were a great example of the teamwork these wrestlers have displayed all year. Everyone knew they had a job to do and they all did it well. Hats off to Coach Mulholland's decision to slide Don Osinski into the 119 slot for the Prep match. He put a lot of faith in the freshman and Donald came through in grand style.

GM Runs Away With ECL Team Title

The General McLane wrestlers won the Erie County League Championship Saturday at Ft. LeBeouf High School and they made it look easy. Led by individual champs, Jake Keene, Kyle Feikles, Hayden Harrison and Paul Hayes, the Lancers outdistanced second place Ft. LeBeouf by more than 57 points.

Thirteen GM wrestlers placed in the tournament. Hadley, Luke and Hudson Harrison, Branden Stearns and Wayne Gormont all finished second. Ryan Dunlap and Travis Goss nailed down third place. Fourth place finishes went to Don Osinski and Josh Grabski.

Jake Keene dominated the 112 lbs. weight class. Keene pinned all three of his opponents, including Ft. LeBeouf's Kody Hiner in the finals. Paul Hayes was the surprise of the tournament at 145 lbs. He upset Greg Murphy (Corry) 2-1 in the semi-finals and then proceeded to pull out a wild 14-10 win over top seeded Ty Perry of Fairview in the finals.

Kyle Feikles pinned his first two opponents and beat Corry's Nick Peterson 8-6, with a takedown at the buzzer in the finals. Hayden Harrison remained unbeaten (25-0), by pinning his first 2 opponents and winning a 12-7 decision over Corey Murphy (Corry) in the finals.

This is the first ECL Championship for General McLane wrestlers since the 1996-97 season. Congratulations!!!

Lancer Wrestlers Sneak By A Tough McDowell Squad

The Lancers pulled out a win over a stubborn Trojan wrestling team Wednesday evening. The Trojans got falls from Mark Anthony (189), PIAA palce winner Ryan Marovich (275) and a hard fought 8-5 decision from James West over Travis Goss at 215, to take a 15-0 lead before the Lancers responded.

Hadley Harrison took down Lewis Jones quickly and eventually got the fall at the 2:29 mark. Jake Keene dominated Josh Barts on the way to an 8-1 decision. That made the score McDowell-15 McLane-9. At 119, Don Osinski gave 2nd ranked (D-10 AAA) Ryan Smith all he could handle, but came out on the short end of a 6-4 count.

Brandon Saraceno was in a battle with Chris Tinsman and on the short end of a 4-2 score when he pancaked Tinsman at the edge of the mat and pinned him in 4:29. That may have been the most important upset win of the evening for the Lancers.

Luke Harrison's bout was the most exciting one of the evening, if not the year. Luke was in a war with Casey George and was taken to his back in the first period. George held a 7-6 lead going into the second stanza. The two wrestlers continued trading points until George rolled Harrison through on the single attempt again for more back points. Luke managed a reversal and took a slim 9-8 lead into the third period. Harrison and George were deadlocked at 11-11 when Luke finally locked up a cross-face cradle and got the fall at 5:24. That gave McLane their first lead at 21-18.

But the Trojans weren't ready to fold just yet. Chad George upset Kyle Feikles 3-1 and that tied the score. Hayden Harrison pinned an outmatched Luke Audet, putting the Lancers up by a score of 27-21. Bryan Kuhn's major decision over Paul Hayes at 145 made it 27-25.

Hudson Harrison received a forfiet at 152 and then Ryan Dunlap put it away with a 25 second fall over Jeremy Little at 160. Branden Stearns added a major decision at 171 to make the final score, General McLane-43 McDowell-25.

GM Wrestling Team Wins
Indian Valley Duals Team Title

The McLane matmen looked like a well oiled machine Saturday at Indian Valley High School. They easily won 4 dual matches, outscoring their opponents by a total of 217 to 66. The Lancers opened against Warren and posted 7 falls on their way to a lopsided 55-12 victory. Warren was penalized 3 team points for unsportsmanlike conduct after the 189 lbs. bout.

GM then faced Indian Valley, who came into the tournament with a 6-1 record and two state ranked wrestlers. The Lancers handed them their second defeat of the season by a score of 46-21. The ball kept rolling as McLane downed Spring Grove 53-21 and then crushed Mahanoy Area 62-12 in the championship round.

Hayden Harrison remained unbeaten by winning all four of his bouts by fall. Also going 4-0 were Jake Keene, who has moved to 112, Luke Harrison, Hudson Harrison and Josh Grabski.

Don Osinski wrestled very well in his varsity debut, knocking off D-10's 3rd ranked, Brain Pascuzzi of Warren. Osinski's only loss in the duals, came at the hands of state ranked, Kevin Henning (Spring Grove). Travis Goss posted 3 wins on the day, his lone loss coming against state ranked, 215 pounder Kyle Sprenkle (Spring Grove). Ryan Dunlap also went 3-1, with a single loss to a state ranked opponent. Prep transfer Kyle Feikles, Hadley Harrison and Paul Hayes all went 3-1 on the day as well.

The GM matmen had a spectacular tournament, posting 26 falls out of a possible 56. Four Lancers now have 20+ wins. Hayden Harrison is 21-0, Hudson and Luke are both 20-1. Hadley is 20-3. Others sporting top records are Josh Grabski who is now 18-3, Jake Keene at 16-4, Kyle Feikles at 14-3 and Ryan Dunlap, who is now 15-8 in a very tough 160 lbs. weight class.

Other Notes:

The GM team is now 15-2 on the season. Both losses came at the hands of Brookville in the KSA Team Duals. But the team is much better at this point, with the addition of Kyle Feikles, the return of Brandon Stearns to the lineup and the shifting of weight classes by a few of the wrestlers. This could end up being one of the best wrestling seasons at General McLane in recent memory.

Hudson Harrison is only 10 away from his 100th career win. Luke Harrison leads the team with 14 pins. He now has 26 pins in his last 52 bouts...AMAZING!

Josh Grabski appears to have found 'his' move! Josh has 11 pins and has used the 'Body Scissors & Power Half' to finish most of them. The pin combo is not new, but no one is doing it better than Grabski.

Travis Goss is doing a great job since moving to the 215 lbs. weight class. Travis is 12-8 overall and 8-4 at 215 lbs., with 3 of those losses coming at the hands of either state or district 10 ranked opponents...not bad for a 180 lbs. sophomore.

Jake Keene is now on a roll after a slow start. After beginning the season with an unenviable 2-2 record, Keene has won 14 0f his last 16 matches. He put on a dominating performance at the Indian Valley Duals at 112 lbs. Ryan Dunlap wrestled an excellent match at Duals against Indian Valley's highly ranked Matt Fetzner. Fetzner came out on top by a score of 5-3. It was Ryan's only loss in the tournamnet.

Paul Hayes has wrestled very well at 145 lbs. since making the move to varsity. He went 3-1 at the Indian Valley Duals. Ditto...Don Osinski. Donald won his first varsity match by knocking of Warren's D-10 ranked Brian Pascuzzi. Osinski posted a 3-1 record at the Duals.

The Lancer wrestlers face off against McDowell next Wednesday, Seneca in a rescheduled match on Thursday and then compete in the ECL tournament, next Saturday at Ft. LeBeouf. The ECL tourney will determine this year's County Champ team as well as All-County individual selections.

McLane Wrestlers Win Over
Meadville With A Perfect Shutout

14 x 6 = 84. Any questions?

The GM wrestlers may have done something Saturday that no other McLane wrestling team has ever done. They wrestled a perfect shutout against Meadville. Meadville was at a definite disadvantage, having to forfiet seven weight classes. But a shutout is a rare occurence in high school wrestling, let alone a perfect one.

Seven GM grapplers scored falls in the mismatch. Jake Keene, Tim Shrout, Paul Hayes, Ryan Dunlap, Branden Stearns, Travis Goss and Wayne Gormont all showed their opponents the lights. Dunlap scored the quickest fall when he decked Brad Mealy in 26 seconds.

This was the Lancer's second shutout victory in two years. They shutout Girard 68-0, last February to give Coach Mulholland his 100th coaching victory.

Hadley's pin came in just 18 seconds and Dunlap's in 19 seconds. Dunlap, who recorded a 26 second fall in his first bout against Meadville, racked up two wins and spent a total of 45 seconds on the mat Saturday.

Hayden Harrison is still unbeaten this year at 17-0. Hadley also has 17 wins against only 2 losses. Luke and Hudson Harrison are both 16-1 and Josh Grabski is 14-3.

Lancers Crush Corry Beavers 46-14

The GM wrestlers proved they are for real Wednesday eveing by crushing Corry 46-14.
Hayden Harrison started the Lancers off with a solid 14-7 decision over Beaver Nick Peterson. Hayden scored 7 takedowns in the lopsided win.

Paul Hayes, in his 4th varsity match this year, wrestled a gutsy match and hung in there for six minutes with highly ranked Corey Murphy. Hudson Harrison scored a quick fall over Tim Jones in 1:22 for his 14th win. Ryan Dunlap used two first period takedowns, an airplaine for back points and a reversal to score a 13-3 major decision over Dana Goodwill.

Branden Stearns, just back from a football injury, faced off against Nick Wood for a rematch of last year's 160 lbs. D-10 final. Wood took Stearns down early in the first period for a 2-0 lead. Stearns escaped and made it 2-1. After battling to a stalemate in the second period, Stearns escaped in the 3rd to make it 3-2. Branden tried desperately to score a takedown in the last 30 seconds, but Wood held him off for the win.

Josh Grabski made his match look easy by throwing the body scissors on Brandon Eck and getting the fall at 1:37. Grabski ran his record to 12-3 with the win. Travis Goss scored a double leg takedown and hit a cradle to take a 5-0 lead against Brandon Edwards. But Edwards got a takedown of his own in the 3rd period and took Goss to his back. That tied the score 5-5. Goss got an escape and a takedown with 20 seconds remaining to pull out an 8-5 win.

Hadley Harrison nailed down his 15th win with a quick fall at 103 lbs. to make the score GM 28 Corry 8. Steve Scharrer used a couple of takedowns to take a 4-1 lead over Kelly Jackson and then held on for an 8-4 win. Jake Keene was in a close match with Jeff Cracker until he grabbed a wrist and bar arm and got the fall at the 2:58 mark. GM 37 Corry 8.

Tim Shrout posted a dominating 4-0 decision over Devon McCray at 125 lbs to make the score 40-9. Luke Harrison finished up the one-sided affair by pinning Jared Durlin in 1:07.

Hayden Harrison Wins 140 Lbs. Tool City Crown
GM Team Finishes 4th

Three GM wrestlers made the greuling Tool City finals Saturday, but only one emerged as a champion. Hayden Harrison scored an impressive 13-8 decision over Reynolds' Travis Battles to win the 140 lbs. title. Hayden won four matches in the tournament, two by fall. His toughest test was in the semi-finals against Corey Murphy (Corry). Murphy led 4-0 at one point in the match until Hayden turned on the burners to post a 7-6 decision.

Harrison put on a takedown clinic in the finals. He took Battles to mat repeatedly with his patented single leg and silenced the Reynolds fans. Hayden became GM's first Tool City Champ since Tommy Kirdahy in 1999.

Luke Harrison won three in a row to make the finals. He pinned FLB's RJ Smith in 1:58 in the opening round, decisioned Corry's Nick Peterson 5-0 in the quarter-finals, and whipped Sean Cote of Chartiers Valley 5-2 in the semis. In the finals, he ran into Reynolds' Owen Brickell. Brickell showed why he is District 10's top ranked wrestler by posting a 7-2 win.

Hudson Harrison opened the tournament by pinning Maplewood's Ryan Braddick and Clearfield's Nathan Shadeck. He had a top-notch performance in the semi-finals against two-time state qualifier, Chad Sutliff. Sutliff had denied Hudson a D-10 title last year when he beat him 7-6 in the finals. Hudson totally dominated Sutliff from the whistle this time and was leading 11-1 when Sutliff injury defaulted. Hudson had a battle on his hands in the finals with McGuffey's Kirk Main. Main caught the Lancer wrestler with a great move 1:27 into the first period and got the fall.

Hadley Harrison battled back from his quarter-finals loss to Jason Alexander to finish 3rd. He posted an impressive 11-5 win over Clearfield's highly touted Matt Kyler in the consolation finals match. Other GM wrestlers who placed were: Tim Shrout-5th, Ryan Dunlap-5th, Branden Stearns-6th, Wayne Gormont-6th. Gormont missed a trip to the finals by the narrowest of margins, losing a 3-2 decision to 275 lbs. titlest, Mike Hills of Reynolds in the semi-finals.

Branden Stearns pulled off an amazing feat by placing 6th. Stearns suffered a seperated shoulder during football season and returned to the practice room only a couple of weeks ago. He knocked off Maplewood's Paul Proper (ranked 3rd in D-10 AA), by a score of 5-4 to make the medal rounds.

The Lancer wrestlers finished 4th as a team in the tournament, a big improvement over last year's 7th place finish. McLane had a total of eight place winners, their most ever at Tool City. The top ten team were: Reynolds (254), Clearfield (193), McGuffey (174), General McLane (171), Chartiers Valley (163), Howland, OH (138), Cochranton (119.5), Maplewood (108), Ft. LeBeouf (107.5), Greenville (96.5).

In other tournament news, Saegertown's unseeded Jason Manross posted a 6-4 upset victory over last year's state champ, Matt Wilcox in the 189 lbs title bout. Manross also defeated two-time District 9 champ, Dave Richards of Clearfield, 15-7 and state place winner, Stephen Breese of McGuffey, 15-4. He was named the tournament's outstanding AA wrestler as a result. Clearfield's Brad Pataky won the AAA Outstanding Wrestler award.

Cochranton's Nick McElhinney (125 lbs.) had an outstanding tournament, scoring four consecutive falls. It took him a total of 5:48 to record all four.

Four GM Wrestlers Remain Unbeaten
After Day One At Tool City Tournament

Luke, Hayden, Hudson Harrison and Wayne Gormont kept their perfect records intact by winning two matches and making the Tool City tournament semi-finals. The four wrestlers now sport 12-0 records.

Luke Harrison won his opening bout against RJ Smith of Ft. LeBoeuf. He decked Smith in just 1:57. In the quarter-finals he faced off against Corry's Nick Peterson. Luke scored a couple of takedowns and an escape to rack up a 5-0 win.

Cousin, Hayden pinned Mike Miller of Conneaut Lake in 1:05 and then posted an 18-1 technical fall over Allen Queen of Clearfield in the quarter-finals. Hudson had a battle going with Maplewood's Ryan Bradick for a period and a half, but got the fall at the 3:56 mark. In the quarter-finals he disposed of Clearfield's Nathan Shadeck in 3:38. Hudson will face last year's District 10 champ and Regional runner-up, Chad Sutliff, tomorrow in the semis. Hudson beat Sutliff in a dual meet last year, but lost a heart-pounding 7-6 decision in the District 10 finals.

Wayne Gormont won both of his matches by fall. He'll meet Reynolds' 275 pounder, Mike Hills in the semi-finals.

Hadley Harrison entered the tournament as the NW Region's top ranked wrestler. He won his first bout by pinning Saegertown's Darren Amy, but was then upset by Ft. LeBeouf's Jason Alexander in the quarter-finals, 8-2.

Josh Grabski pinned Glendale's Mike Grega in 3:47, then dropped an 11-2 decision to last year's 8th place state medalist, Stephen Breese of McGuffey. Branden Stearns scored a 16-4 major decision over Ft. LeBeouf's Sam Landis in the opening round, then dropped a 9-1 decision in the quarter-finals.

The most exciting action of the evening was the match between Ryan Dunlap and Corry's Nick Wood. Wood was the 160 lbs. D-10 champ last year and placed 4th at Regionals. Dunlap and Wood battled to a 0-0 stalemate in the first period. Wood escaped and took a 1-0 lead into the third. Ryan countered with an escape of his own to tie the score at 1-1, then hit a beautiful double leg takedown to take a 3-1 lead. Wood reversed Dunlap to tie it again at 3-3 and send the match into overtime. Neither could score in the first overtime period. Wood won the toss and chose down. He finally reversed Dunlap 15 seconds into the second overtime period to win the bout.

Several other GM wrestlers are still alive in the consolation wrestlebacks. The GM team finished Friday's action in 3rd place with 75 team points, behind 2nd place McGuffey (79 points) and powerhouse Reynolds (103 points), which placed an amazing 11 wrestlers in the semi-final round. Ft. LeBeouf was in 7th place with 51.5 points.

Wrestling resumes Saturday at 9 AM. The parade of campions is at 6:30 with the consolation finals and finals at 7 PM.
