District 10
Team Duals Berth Evaporates on Critera #7
The
hard luck Lancers saw a middle weight meltdown and the PIAA
rule book end their chances of wrestling in this week's District
10 Team Duals. On Senior Night at General McLane High School,
the Prep Ramblers rebounded from an 18 point deficit to knot
the team score at 36. That sent the referee to the rule book
to determine the winner by criteria. The Lancers and Ramblers
were dead even on the first 6 tie breakers, but the Prep squad
posted more near fall points. That gave them the the win and
District 10 Team Dual berth.
McLane
won the first three bouts to take a 13-0 lead. Ethan Polaski
opened for GM with a 2 minute, 35 second pin over veteran
Ross Rundstedler. Shawn McFadden followed with a 4-2
decision over Caleb Wesman and Keith Scharrer scored
a lopsided 9-1 major decision over John Agnello at 103 lbs.
After
a loss at 112, Cyrus Parlin and Glen Sult posted
back to back falls at 119 and 125. Sult was all business as
he disposed of Tray Thayer in 19 seconds. That put the Lancers
on top, 25-6. Eric Zelina ran up a 16-0 technical fall
over an obviously stalling opponent at 135. Carnell Muhammad
was slapped with 4 stalling points in the bout. GM led, 30-12
at that point, but that's as good as it would get.
The
Ramblers won the next four bouts, 2 by fall to take their
first lead of the night, 33-30. Unbeaten Clay Steadman
gave his team back the lead when he posted a fall over Sean
Oberinger at 189 lbs. But the Ramblers pulled out the last
win of the night by decision to tie the score at 36. After
a 10 minute conference between the officials, coaches and
scorekeepers, Prep was awarded the win, 37-36.
Notes
From the Prep Dual Meet:
Tonight's
loss to Prep was especially painful because so much was at
stake and the loss was so close. McLane's wrestling team is
no stanger to heart breaking losses. In the past two years
the team has been involved in five 1 point decisions. They've
lost four of them. Three of those losses came at the hands
of the Ramblers. Coach Cook must be wondering when he's going
to wake up from this nightmare.
Eric
Zelina's win against Prep was his 28th of the season and
the 105th of his career. Cyrus Buzzsaw Parlin chewed
up another opponent tonight for his 26th win of the year.
Clay
Steadman, who is ranked 15th in the state (according to
the latest Off The Mat Rankings) remained unbeaten and ran
his record to 16-0. Steadman still hasn't had a single offensive
point scored on him this season. Clay's wrestling career has
been interrupted by several nagging injuries, but he has a
District 10 Crown and a 31-4 record to show for the time he
has been on the mat over the past two seasons. One can only
wonder what an injury free Clay Steadman could have accomplished
in four years.
Wednesday
night was Senior Night at McLane. This year's senior
wrestlers are: Ethan Polaski, Keith Scharrer, Glen Sult, Lou
Decker, Clay Steadman, Dale Sanders and Eric Zelina. Senior
night is a bittersweet moment for the wrestlers and their
parents. While there is still a lot of wrestling left this
season, Senior Night marks the last time these wrestlers will
wrestle at home.
In
a Senior Night preliminary event, the Edinboro Youth Wrestling
Club wrestled the Fort LeBoeuf little Bisons. The Bisons
won the match, 33-18. EYWC wrestlers, Ossie Bowers,
Tom Soboleski, and Luke Soboleski all posted
wins by decision. Joey Wheeling pinned his opponent.
Nice job guys!!! Those in attendance really enjoyed watching
the youth wrestlers go at it. I hope this becomes a regular
event.

Win 4 of 5 at Lewistown Duals
Cook Posts 40th Coaching Win!
Coach
Cook finally got a chance to see his best lineup on the mat
Saturday at the Lewistown Duals and he had to be pleased.
The Lancers won 4 out of 5 dual meets, including an upset
of WPIAL power, Greensburg-Salem. The GM wrestlers beat Mechanicsburg
40-32, Wellsboro 63-16, Greensburg-Salem 34-33 and Harrisburg
72-11. Their 10 match win streak was snapped when they dropped
a heart breaker to host Lewistown 40-27 in the day's finale.
Even
the loss to Lewistown was encouraging when a few points are
taken into consideration. McLane was forced to default two
weight classes when Jake Carter and Glen Sult suffered minor
injuries, and two other losses were very close. Dale Sanders
dropped a 4-2 decision and Cyrus lost 3-2. Both of those bouts
could have gone the other way, changing the final outcome.
GM lost earlier in the year, 55-12 to Bellefonte and Lewistown
beat Bellefonte a couple of weeks ago.
The
Lancers should be a force to reckon with for the remainder
of the season. Senior, Lou Decker led the team with
a 5-0 record, including 5 falls. Eric Zelina and Clay
Steadman also went 5-0 on the day.
Notes
From the Lewistown Duals:
Coach
Cook posted his 40th coaching victory in less than 3 years
against Harrisburg. Congratulations!!!
Lou
Decker's 5 pins ran his career total to 50. That puts
him at #7 on the all-time list. Lou is also within 3 reversals
of setting a new school record in that category.
Eric
Zelina posted career win number 100 in his first bout,
a 10-1 major decision over Mechanicsburg's Evan Baer. By the
end of the day Zelina had 104 wins and claimed the #8 spot
on the all-time career wins list. Eric also vaulted to the
5th spot for career takedowns with 210 and holds the #8 spot
with 48 career pins.
Clay
Steadman is on an amazing roll. Clay went 5-0 and posted
3 falls, running his season record to 15-0. Steadman has yet
to surrender an offensive point this season (the only points
he's given up have been intentional).
Keith
Scharrer racked up 3 pins on the day. He leads the team
with 16. Keith needs 4 more pins to enter the record books.
The GM team has posted 108 falls on the year.

McLane Goes
6-1 at Corry Duals
The
McLane wrestlers went 6-1 at the Corry Duals but looked flat
in their opening round loss to a very good Meadville squad.
Meadville completely outwrestled the Lancers, winning 10 of
14 weight classes (6 by fall). Fortunately the loss acted
as a wake up call as the Pride & Poise Boys came back
to win six straight matches.
Besides
the Lancers 6-1 record, there were a few other things to cheer
about. Clay Steadman returned to the lineup Saturday
and won 3 matches to run his season record to 10-0. Eric
Zelina went 7-0, beating Southside Beaver's Domick Demor
(ranked 15th in the state AA) in the process. The team shutout
Central 77-0 in Friday evening's final match.
But
the big story of the weekend was Keith Scharrer, who
was a nearly perfect pinning machine. He won all seven of
his bouts by fall. Bouncing back and forth between 103 and
112 lbs., Keith disposed of one opponent after another so
quickly he never wrestled in a third period. His fastest fall
was over Titusville's Jason Drake in 58 seconds, his longest
took all of 3 minutes 45 seconds.
Cyrus
Parlin went 6-1 with four pins and a major decision. His
only loss came at the hands of Meadville's Kasey Davis in
double overtime. It was the third meeting between the two
wrestlers in the past week. Davis now owns a 2-1 edge in the
series. The new and improved, Glen Sult also went 6-1.
After being pinned by Meadville's Rusty Woodrow in his first
match, Glen bounced back to win six in a row, 3 by fall and
1 by major.
Joe
Zimmerman, Lou Decker and Shawn McFadden
all went 6-1. Decker posted 5 pins and a technical
fall. Corey Goss and Clay Steadman both went
3-0. Goss had a pair of pins in his three wins. Seth Stonis
went 5-2, posting 3 falls along the way.
Notes
From the Corry Duals:
The loss to Meadville definitely hurt the Lancers chances
of making this year's District Duals AAA field. But they may
still have an outside shot. They now have a 6-3 Region 4 record
and the 4th seed could come down to the winner of the General
McLane vs. Prep dual on January 24th.
Keith
Scharrer took over the team lead for pins this weekend.
His seven pins ran his season total to 13. Cyrus Parlin
and Eric Zelina became the first two GM wrestlers to
reach the 20 win mark for the season. Both wrestlers are 22-5.
Zelina's
last bout was a wild 4-3 win over 15th ranked, Dominick Demor
of Southside. Eric was behind 3-2 with seconds left
when he reversed Demor to seal his 99th career win.
After
being sidelined for five weeks with an injury, Clay Steadman
saw limited action this weekend. Clay should be ready and
raring to go for the Lewistown Duals next Saturday. It's good
to see him back in the lineup.

GM
Wrestlers Secure First Win Over Beavers
The
Lancer wrestling team finally broke into the win column Tuesday
evening at Corry High School against the 5-4 Beavers. Shawn
McFadden got the big red machine rolling with 1:20 pin
over Corry heavyweight, Tyler Meneely. In the 103 pound bout,
Keith Scharrer hit a nifty throwby on Kevin Kerr for
a takedown early in the 1st stanza and then padded his lead
with a bar arm stepover and cradle to make it 9-0. Keith nailed
down his 6th fall of the season at the 3:30 mark to make the
score 12-0, GM.
Cyrus
(Buzzsaw) Parlin chewed up another opponent last night
for his team leading 16th win. Parlin dropped in on a double
leg then switched off to a bear hug for his first takedown
and a 2-0 lead. It took most of the remaining period for Cyrus
to score with double bars on a very flexible opponent, but
he managed 2 back points at the buzzer to make it 4-0. Cyrus
hit a double leg for his second takedown in the second period,
then pinned Jared Colvin at 3:13. At 125, Glen Sult
scored a quick takedown on Zach Erdman, then went to a tilt
and switched to a cradle to take a 5-0 lead. In the second
period, Glen took his opponent to the mat and straight to
his back for the fall in just 10 seconds.
Joe
Zimmerman and Jesse Preisler wrestled what may have been
the wildest bout of the night. The score was knotted 2-2 at
the end of one. Joe scored a takedown 25 seconds into the
match, but Preisler reversed him at the buzzer. Zimmerman
rode Preisler out in the second period, but was hit with a
questionable stalling call. That gave the Beaver a 3-2 lead.
In the final period, Zimmerman and Preisler traded reversals
which left Joe in a 5-4 hole. But the Lancer wasn't finished.
With 20 seconds remaining in the match, Joe hit a granby,
turned into his opponent and took him to his back to secure
an 8-5 victory. That made the team score, GM 27 Corry 4.
Eric
Zelina scored on an sweep single 18 seconds into the first
period to take a 2-0 lead over Jake Kondrlik. After a Kondrlik
escape, Eric scored another takedown and 3 back points to
take a 7-1 lead. Zelina cruised to a 13-3 major decision,
adding another pair of takedowns and a reversal. Corry won
the next three bouts to shrink the GM lead to 31-16. But LeRoy
Jenkins added to the McLane lead when he won a wild, 7-3
decision over Ken Kondzielski at 160 lbs.
Lou
Decker, who is ranked 2nd in the district at 171 was forced
to bump up a weight class when the Beavers, in a strategic
move sent Ryan Smith out against Jake Carter at 171 pounds.
The move didn't help Corry as Decker pulled out a hard fought
10-5 decision over Delbert Liller (ranked third in the distrct
at 189), to give the Lancers a 37-20 lead. Ethan Polaski
put an exclamation point on the McLane victory when he decked
Josh Smith with 11 seconds left in the first period. Final
score, GM 43 Corry 20.
The
Lancer wrestlers will be back in action Friday and Saturday
for a ton of wrestling at the Corry Duals.
Notes
From Corry:
Coach
Ryan Cook scored his 30th coaching victory at Corry. At
this point, his career coaching record is 30-13 (a nearly
70% win pct.).
Eric
Zelina scored his 92nd career win Tuesday over Jake Kondrlik.
Eric's major decision entered him in the Lancer record books
(tied for 9th) with 12 career major decisons. Eric also moved
into the number 8 spot for career takedowns with 188. He could
pass Jake Keene, Branden Stearns and Donald Osinski before
the season ends. Zelina also leads the team with 8 pins and
77 team points this season.
Cyrus
Buzzsaw Parlin is putting up some admirable numbers so
far this year. He leads the team in wins (16), takedowns (29),
escapes (18), 3 point near falls (12), technical falls (1)
and major decisions (2).
Lou
Decker's 10-5 win over 189 pounder Delbert Liller was
the 80th of his career.
Seth
Stonis has come a long way the past couple of weeks. Stonis
(a sophomore) showed a lot of poise and maturity in his two
meetings against Brandon Eck (a senior and regional qualifier).
Even though Seth lost 3-0 and 5-1, he put together some some
nice takedown attempts and made the veteran Eck work hard
for the wins. The off season wrestling and lifting seems like
it's starting to pay off for Seth.
A
tip of the cap to Joe Zimmerman for mustering the determination
and energy for a five point move that resulted in a win for
him last night. Trailing 5-4 with just seconds remaining,
Joe hit a nice roll, turned into his opponent and took him
to his back with a crossface to pull out an 8-5 victory.

Five GM Wrestlers
Place at Tool City
Five
McLane wrestlers placed at this year's Tool City Tournament.
Eric Zelina, Keith Scharrer, Cyrus Parlin,
Seth Stonis and Lou Decker all brought home
medals from the tournament, which had one of the toughest
fields in recent years.
Zelina
led the Lancers with his 3rd place finish. He opened with
2 straight pins, a 46 second flattening of DuBois' Matt Zimmerman
and a 4:32 stretch job over Billy Osbourne (ranked 8th-Ohio
DI) of St. Ignatius. Eric suffered his only loss to Reynolds'
Cory Brown (ranked 8th AA). He bounced back to claim the third
spot on the podium with an 11-2 decision over James Kreiser
of Boiling Springs and a 5-4 nail biter over Howland, Ohio's
Greg Ryan.
Keith
Scharrer received an opening round bye, then moved into
the semis with a 6-0 shutout over Ryan Johnson of Iroquois.
He dropped into the consolation brackets when he lost to eventual
champion, Jerome Robinson of St. Ignatius (ranked 2nd-Ohio
DI). Keith just missed taking home a 3rd place medal when
he dropped a 4-3 heart breaker to Garet Pisani (ranked 17th-AA).
Keith was leading 3-0 with 30 seconds left in the bout when
Pisani hit a nifty granby and pancaked him to his back for
a 4 point move.
Cyrus
Parlin claimed 5th place by going 4-2. He opened with
a 16-1 shellacking of Conneaut Lake's Cass Custard, but dropped
into the consys when he lost a 7-5 overtime war with Meadville's
freshman sensation, Kasey Davis. Cyrus bounced back with a
9-1 major over Greenville's Brian Goda, before losing a tough
1-0 decision to Reynolds Sam Fuchs (ranked 8th-AA). Parlin
decided to choose the neutral position in the 3rd period to
go for the winning takedown, but Fuchs held him off for the
entire 2 minutes. Cyrus grabbed 5th place with a little payback
when he won a crazy, 6-4 double overtime victory over Kasey
Davis who had knocked him out of the winner's bracket earlier.
Lou
Decker took 5th at 171 pounds. He pinned Ben Bendokiatis
of St Ignatius in 1:14 in the preliminary round. He dropped
out of the winner's bracket when he lost to Meadville's Alex
Hamilton (ranked 18th-AAA). Lou bounced back with a nice,
7-1 win over last year's District 10 runnerup, Ryan Smith
of Corry, then lost by a 4-1 count to Josh Cook of Boiling
Springs (ranked 24th-AA). Lou claimed the number 5 spot with
a forfeit win over Saegertown's Scott Stearns. Stearns, who
is ranked 9th in the state in AA, was forced to sit out the
final bout due to injury.
Seth
Stonis cranked his wrestling up to another level and claimed
6th place in a loaded 152 pound field. He started the tourney
by grinding out a 4-2 win over Justin McAninch of Dubois.
He lost to eventual champ, Iroquois' Cris Reitz, then vaulted
into the medal rounds with a dominating, 8-1 win over Zac
McManus of Howland.

Notes
From the Tool City Tourney:
Cyrus
Parlin's matches against Meadville's Kasey Davis were
among the most exciting of the tournament. The two went toe
to toe in both bouts with neither wrestler backing down. Both
matches went into overtime and down to the last ticks of the
clock. This may turn into one of those great, multi-meeting
rivalries. The two wrestlers could tangle again at next weekend's
Corry Duals. Kudos to Cyrus for gutting out double overtime
and getting the win in the 5th place wrestle-off. Cyrus
also became the first GM wrestler to reach to 15 win plateau
this season.
Seth
Stonis did a great job at Tool City. He went into the
Tournament unseeded and pulled off a mild upset over 6th seed,
Justin McAninch. Seth lost his next bout, but rebounded to
put together back to back dominating wins (5-1 and 8-1) when
he really needed them. Seth lost his final two bouts to two
good wrestlers, but battled hard for 6 minutes in both.
Eric
Zelina went 4-1 and got his 88th, 89th, 90th and 91st
career wins this weekend. With some good wrestling and a little
luck, Eric could nail his 100th career win against
Mechanicsburg at the Lewistown Duals. He also added a couple
of pins to run his career total to 41. Four more will put
him in the GM record books in that category. He's also
on the verge of entering the books for career major decisions
(he needs one more). In addition, Eric leads the team
with 8 falls so far this year.
Lou
Decker secured his 78th and 79th career wins and his 39th
and 40th career pins. Decker also is one of the few
McLane wrestlers to become a four time Tool City placewinner.
Lou placed 6th as a freshman, 5th as a sophomore, 3rd as a
junior and 5th this year. Congratulations Lou.
While
the team's 11th place finish was disappointing, it should
be noted that some of the wrestlers received some unfortunate
spots in the brackets. Tyler Bowers, Dale Sanders, LeRoy Jenkins
and Jake Carter all drew #1 seeds right out of the gate. That
didn't help the the Lancers get off to a fast start.
