Banged Up Lancers Lose to Corry at District 10 Duals

Ravaged by injuries and the flu bug, the Lancers didn't even remotely resemble the team that beat Corry, 37-29 less than 3 weeks ago. Missing starters Seth Stonis, Zach Lucas and Jake Carter from the lineup, the Lancers dropped a lopsided 41-16 decision to the Beavers at the District 10 AAA Duals on Tuesday at Edinboro's McComb Fieldhouse.

GM managed just five wins in the contest. Shawn McFadden, Paul Scharrer, Ryan Ruth and Zac Baumgartner picked up decisions and Cyrus Parlin won by major decision.

Despite the outcome of last night's dual, Coach Cook remained upbeat and optimistic. "This team has faced a lot of adversity this season. Despite the scores of our last few dual meets, the team has proven that they are gutsy and resilient. I am proud of these guys and we are expecting big things for the postseason."

Conneaut Lake, Corry, General McLane and Prep battled for the D10 Team Duals title last night. Prep came out on top, beating Conneaut Lake, 37-24 and Corry, 35-22.

The McLane wrestlers will be back in action February 11th, when they face the Bisons of Fort LeBoeuf.

Notes from the D10 Duals:

Shawn McFadden became the second GM wrestler to reach the 30 win plateau this season when he decisioned Tyler Meneely of Corry, 5-0. It's the first time Shawn has had a 30 win season.

Freshman, Zac Baumgartner posted his 20th win of the season over Nash Walters with a, 3-2 come from behind decision.

Tyler Bowers deserves notice for his performance against Corry's Austin Gillihan last night. Gillihan beat Tyler, 12-4 the last time the two met. Tyler closed the gap only losing by 3 this time.

Joe Zimmerman showed once again why he is a team leader. Joe battled a bad case of the flu all week, but came out and wrestled hard for six minutes against a tough opponent. Joe also tied the school record for most reversals in a season (28) last night. Congratulations!

Cyrus Parlin notched his 98th career win and 16th career major decision. Cyrus set new records for most 3 Point near falls in a career and in a season this year. He is number 9 on the career takedown list, number 7 for career escapes and number 7 for career major decisions. Way to go Cyrus!!!

The parents and fans are extremely proud of this year's Lancer wrestlers. Even though they are a young team, they exceeded everyone's expectations, winning 13 of 18 matches and taking 2nd place in Region 4. Great Job Guys!!!

GM Loses to Unbeaten Ramblers

The Lancers have been as hot as any wrestling team in the area recently, winning 13 of their last 15 dual meets. But they were taken to the woodshed last night by a talented and experienced Erie Prep squad. The Ramblers, who are unbeaten in 15 dual meets won 8 of the first 10 bouts and cruised to a 45-15 win.

Only four GM wrestlers managed wins and just one was worth bonus points. Shawn McFadden was the first to get on the board with a 3-0 decision over Caleb Wesman. McFadden was nursing a 1-0 lead when he bowled Wesman over for a takedown with 3 seconds remaining in the bout. Cyrus Parlin beat stubborn freshman Kris Hess, 7-1 for his 97th career win. Dalton Lester posted a, 9-7 come from behind win over Jeremy Kuhn at 145 lbs.and Corey Goss recovered from a third period reversal to pin Grant Chase in a headlock with just 14 ticks left on the clock.

Despite last night's loss, General McLane is still considered one of the top AAA teams since they have beaten every Region 4 opponent except Conneault Lake and Prep. McLane should be selected as either the number 2 or 3 seed for next Tuesday's D 10 Duals.

Lancers Win 3, Lose 2 at Lewistown Duals

The McLane Wrestlers extended their win streak to 12 straight matches on Saturday before losing a heartbreaker to host Lewistown, 34-30. That loss was a tough one to swallow because they lost four bouts in that match by 2 points or less. The Lancers then suffered their second straight dual loss, 46-26 to DuBois. The Pride 'N Poise Boys bounced back from those disappointing losses with a 49-20 win over Greensburg-Salem in the final match.

McLane started the day by defeating Williamsport 67-9 and Harrisburg, 69-3. Tyler Bowers, Cyrus Parlin, Joe Zimmerman, Zac Baumgartner, Corey Goss, Jake Carter and Shawn McFadden all pinned their Williamsport opponents and Dalton Lester scored a major decision. Cyrus Parlin, LeRoy Jenkins and Shawn McFadden had pins for the Lancers against Harrisburg.

Shawn McFadden and Cyrus Parlin both posted falls against Greensburg-Salem. Jake Carter won by major decision and Doug Myers won by disqualification.

This is the the Lancers 3rd trip to the Lewistown Duals. They have yet to beat Lewistown. The GM Matmen will be back in action on Wednesday against Erie Cathedral Prep.

----------------------

Notes From the Lewistown Duals:

Cyrus Parlin shattered Hudson Harrison's 3 Point Near Fall record. Cyrus also racked up 4 falls at Lewistown . He is the first GM wrestler to reach the 30 win mark for the season, bringing his career total to 96 wins.

Shawn McFadden leads the team in Falls this season with 14. After a slow start, Shawn has been a pinning machine. Seth Stonis and Paul Scharrer both reached the 20 win mark for the season.

GM Wins 10th Straight over McDowell on Senior Night

The General McLane wrestlers won their 10th straight dual meet Wednesday on Senior Night and clinched a spot in the District 10 Duals in the process. It was only a month ago that almost no one thought the Lancers would be considered one of the District's top teams. ALMOST no one except Coch Cook that is. "I could see the talent and heart in this team from the first practice. I knew they were capable of big things and there was no fear of setting the bar too high." And the team inched closer to that bar Coach Cook set when they crushed the McDowell Trojans at home in what was expected to be a fairly close match.

LeRoy Jenkins came back from a 4-0 deficit to pin McDowell's Mike DiLuzio in overtime. That win lit a fire under the rest of the team. It was Dalton Lester and Corey Goss who posted the first two wins. Dalton broke a 0-0 tie with Dom DeSanto by scoring back points with just 23 seconds remaining in their bout and held on for a 2-0 decision. Corey Goss followed with a 47 second pin over Robby Ferguson. But it was Jenkins' come from behind win that provided the spark which resulted in the Lancers winning eight of the next nine bouts.

Jake Carter won a 4-1 decision over Mike Weissenger at 189 lbs. and Doug Myers posted an 11-3 major decision over Thor Perry at 215 lbs. Shawn McFadden kept the ball rolling with yet another overtime win, this one, a 3-1 squeaker over Charles Wilson. Paul Scharrer pinned Mike Mele at 103 to give the Lancers a 31-3 lead. Then at 112 lbs. Tyler Bowers, who found himself on the short end of the score midway through the final period, pulled out an 8-7 win over Mike Volant..

Cyrus Parlin recovered from a Sean Stancliff takedown to post a 12-4 major decision at 119 lbs. and Joe Zimmerman posted his 20th win of the season, 8-1 over Ryan Kenski. The final team points were added by freshman Zac Baumgartner at 130 lbs. Baumgartner stunned the crowd when he countered Kenny Hammer's takedown attempt with a devastating headlock that nearly resulted in a pin. Zac took a 5-0 lead and went on to post a convincing 13-6 win over his senior opponent. Final score: GM 44 McDowell 15.

Earlier in the evening, the Parker Middle School wrestlers won their third straight match, a 58-18 lashing of the Trojans. The junior high grapplers have dominated their opponents in dual meets so far this season.

The McLane wrestlers will be back in action this weekend at the Lewistown Duals. They will face Erie Prep next Wednesday in a match which could determine the Region team champion and the top seed in the District Duals.

------------------

Notes from the McDowell Dual:

Cyrus Parlin is shaking up the GM record books. He had a 3 point near fall last night that tied him with Hudson Harrison for the school record of 75 in a career. Cyrus also posted his 15th major decision which puts him in 7th place on the all time list. He also racked up career win number 92.

Freshman, Zac Baumgartner may have opened some eyes last night with his big win over veteran, senior Kenny Hammer. Zac nearly pinned Hammer in the opening stanza, but what was even more impressive was the way he continued to wrestle with "refuse-to-lose" intensity through the rest of the bout.

Dalton Lester, Tyler Bowers, Shawn McFadden and LeRoy Jenkins demonstrated the importance of wrestling hard until the end of a match. All three wrestlers won close bouts in which the outcome wasn't determined until the final ticks of the clock. Way to finish hard guys!!!

Coach Cook was once again pleased with the team's efforts and said, "Senior Leadership has really helped shape a winning attitude with the undercalssmen."

Lancers Go 8-0 at Corry Duals

The young upstart Lancers continued to raise eyebrows at this weekend's Corry Duals. The Lancers won all 8 of their matches over a two day stretch, including 3 upset wins over Franklin, Titusville and Meadville. Saturday afternoon's 52-21 victory over Oil City was Coach Cook's 50th career head coaching win.

Saturday evening's final bout against the 4th ranked Meadville Bulldogs was a nailbiter through the first 11 bouts. The McLane matmen were trailing Meadville 13-12, when freshman Zach Lucas provided the Lancers with a pivitol win that changed the momentum of the match. Zach's win didn't come easily either. Former GM wrestler Steve Hall took Lucas down and to his back late in the first period. But Lucas stunned his opponent and the crowd when powered his way out of a guillotine, came over the top and stuck Hall with just 4 ticks left on the first period clock. That gave GM the lead for good. Shawn McFadden also had a crucial win at heavyweight when he beat Matt Knapp, 3-1. McFadden's throwby of Knapp with a couple of seconds remaining in overtime put the match out of reach for the Bulldogs.

Earlier in the day, Coach Cook's crew squeaked out a 39-35 win over 5th ranked Titusville. 171 pounder Seth Stonis was the hero in that one. The Lancers were leading by a single point (36-35) going in to the final bout. Seth came through for his teammates with a 7-2 decision over Joel Kerr.

Coach Cook was happy with the team's performance and said, "We accomplished a lot this weekend and opened some eyes around the district. We accomplished what we set out to do and what we expected this week." He added, "These boys are really coming together now and are realizing that it takes 14 guys on the mat to win a dual meet."

Stonis had a great weekend, winning all 7 of his bouts. Paul Scharrer went 7-1 and Cyrus Parlin was 7-1. Shawn McFadden went 6-1, Brandon Horn was 6-1 and Doug Myers went 6-2 with 4 pins. Joe Zimmerman and Tyler Bowers both posted 6-2 records. But Jake Carter may have had the best weekend of all of the Lancer wrestlers. Carter posted 7 wins in 7 attempts and 6 of them were pins.

The McLane wrestling team's record now stands at 9-1. Their win over Corry last Wednesday and this weekend's showing should propel them into the top 4 in the District rankings. They are in contention for a District 10 Duals berth and a win over McDowell on would almost certainly clinch the deal. The Lancers will wrestle McDowell at home on Senior Night.

Notes From the Corry Duals:

Cyrus Parlin suffered his only loss this weekend when he bumped up a weight class to face Southside's David Demor. Demor is one of the top ranked freshman wrestlers in the Nation. Parlin's 7 wins this weekend gave him 25 for the season and 91 for his career. The countdown to 100 begins! Cyrus also posted his 14th career major decision which places him at 8th on the all-time Lancer list.

Heavyweight Shawn McFadden also broke the 20 win mark for the season. He now has 23.

Coach Cook has 51 wins as a head coach after this weekend. He is racking them up at a faster pace than any previous head coach. Coach Cook is averaging 14.5 wins per season!!!

Caleb Baker, Andrew Armagost and Brandon Horn all posted their first varsity wins at the Corry Duals. Congrats!!!

In my opinion, the team's performance this past week was nothing short of amazing. They were under everyone's radar, but seemed to come together as a team quickly. I am most impressed by the fact that they managed to beat Corry and win all 8 matches at the Corry Duals even though they had some good wrestlers out of the lineup. A tip of the cap to Coach Cook, his coaching staff and the wrestlers. Fantastic job guys.

Lancer Matmen Upset 3rd Ranked Beavers

The Lancer matmen came screaming back from a 16-0 deficit to pull out a 37-29 win over the 3rd ranked Corry Beavers in front of a large home crowd at General McLane. The rally began at 152 pounds when Corey Goss recovered from a near disaster to post a 16-6 major decision over Beau Norton. Goss was taken to his back in the opening seconds but powered out and turned the tables on Norton to take a 5-2 lead. Seth Stonis added team points with a 2-0 shutout over Dustin Taubert at 171. At 215 lbs. Doug Myers gave the Lancers a big boost when he pinned Josh Smith at the 3:17 mark.

Heavyweight Shawn McFadden pinned Tyler Meneely in 4:59 to pull the Lancers to within 6. At 103 pounds Paul Scharrer took Alan Royek straight to his back for the fall and tied the team score at 25. At 119 lbs., Cyrus Parlin was working on what appeared to be a major decision when he hit a picture perfect high crotch, took veteran Brandon Fronk to his back and pinned the Beaver with 34 seconds remaining in their bout. That put the Lancers up 31-29.

Joe Zimmerman added three more team points with a workmanlike 6-1 win at 125. The score stood at 34-29 with one bout to go. All freshman Zac Baumgartner had to do was stay off of his back to assure the Lancer win. Zac did better than that. He was trailing, 5-4 with seconds remaining in the bout when he was awarded a penalty point for stalling. Then Zac struck like lightning. On the restart he escaped with 1.9 seconds remaining to score the winning point as the partisan home crowd roared their approval. Final score, GM 37, Corry 29.

Coach Cook was obviously pleased when asked about the result. "The team finally came together and wrestled the way we knew they could. These guys can wrestle with anyone." Coach Cook added, "Corey Goss was impressive and wrestled with a lot of heart. He came through huge with bonus points in what I thought would be a big swing match."

The Lancers evened their dual record at 1-1 with the win. They will be back in action this weekend at the Corry Duals where they will wrestle eight duals in two days.

Parlin, McFadden & Scharrer Medal at Tool City

Cyrus Parlin grabbed 3rd place at this weekend's 30th annual Tool City Tournament, losing only once when he got caught in a pinning combination by eventual champ, Joe Spisak of Boiling Springs in the semifinal round. Cyrus racked up four wins to become a 2 time Tool City placewinner. He was 5th last year.

Shawn McFadden took 5th place. He posted three victories, including a pair of wins over Greenville's Dillon Sarcinella. The second one was a 7-5 overtime nail biter that had the Lancer fans on the edge of their seats. It was McFadden's first medal at Tool City after going 2-2 the previous two years.

Paul Scharrer made a statement by placing 6th at one of the area's toughest tournaments as a freshman. Scharrer lost his opening round bout, but bounced back to post three consecutive wins to make the medal rounds.

Tyler Bowers, Joe Zimmerman and Jake Carter all went 2-2, and came up just short of placing. Seth Stonis, Dan McConnell, Dalton Lester, Corey Goss, LeRoy Jenkins and Doug Myers posted one win each.

---------

Notes from the Tool City Tournament: Cyrus Parlin posted career wins #80, 81, 82 and 83 this weekend. Cyrus is on track for 100+.
