Lancers Win
Fred Bell Tournament Title
When
you're on a roll, you're on a roll. The McLane wrestlers,
in addition to having a spotless dual meet record, won
their second team tournament title of the season on Saturday
in Grove City. The Lancers even made it look easy. Exactly
half of the team made the finals and 10 wrestlers placed in
the top four! By the end of the day Friday it was evident
that the McLane wrestling team was on a serious mission. The
Lancers ended the first day of action with 21 wins, 4 losses,
15 pins, 2 tech falls, 3 majors and a decision.
Joe
Wheeling made the Fred Bell finals for the third straight
year and won his 2nd title at 106 lbs. Wheeling was never
seriously challenged. He started the tournament with 3 pins
in a row and followed with a 6-0 white washing of 21st ranked,
Jake Jones of Stroudsburg in the semis. In the finals, Joe
took Lakeview's Evan Clayton down almost immediately and cruised
to a 14-2 major decision.
Ossie
Bowers grabbed the crown at 160 lbs. Bowers pinned his
opponent in the pigtail round, posted a major decision in
the preliminaries and then secured a 6-2 decision over Cochranton's
Ryan Northcott in the quarters. Ossie eked past Titusville's
16th ranked, Ehrin Lee, 5-3 in the semis. He won the title
when he rallied from a 4-1 deficit to win a 6-5 decision over
South Side's Connor Payne.
Chris
Laird was McLane's third champion, winning the 182 lbs.
title in convincing fashion. Laird posted a trio of pins in
the opening rounds and then beat Stroudsburg's Joe Palmisano,
9-6 in the semis. In the finals, Chris came storming back
from a 3-2 defict and posted a 10-5 decision over Joe Hines
of Hickory.
Keller
Watkins took runnerup honors at 126. Watkins scored an
astounding 50 points in his first three bouts, all wins by
technical fall. He pulled out a 4-2 overtime win over Conneaut's
11th ranked, Kyle Luckowich in the semifinal round before
falling in the finals to Warren's DJ Fehlman. Watkins won
the first meeting between the two several days ago in Warren,
by a score of 7-2.
Ken
Stoll also placed 2nd when he forfeited in the finals
due to a sore shoulder. Stoll won by fall in the preliminary
round, posted a 6-1 decision over Titusville's Easton Hogue
in the quarterfinals and then shut out Stroudsburg's Brian
Morales, 5-0 to make the finals.
Tyler
Hendricks came up just one heart breaking point short
of winning the 170 lbs. crown when he lost, 6-5 to Cochranton's
14th ranked, Austin Andrews in the finals. Hendricks wrestled
a great tournament, posting two pins and two lopsided decisions
before losing his last bout. Tyler was trailing Andrews, 4-1
early in the second period and came back to tie the score
at 4 in the third. He gave up a late takedown, but managed
to escape to pull within a point. Unfortunately he ran out
of time before he could score a go ahead takedown.
Jake
Baker also just missed winning a title at 195 lbs. After
putting together four straight wins, including three pins,
Baker fell in the finals to Franklin's Dan Geer by a score
of 4-2 in overtime.
Deane
Twitchell took 3rd place at 132 lbs., losing just once
to the tournament's outstanding wrestler, 6th ranked, Shane
Gentry of South Side in the quarterfinal round. Twitchell
actually had more wins in the tournament than any other McLane
wrestler. He won 6 bouts, including a pair of pins and a pair
of major decisions.
Ian
Mallory also took 3rd place at 220 lbs. Mallory wrestled
very well and lost just once, in the semifinals to 4th ranked
tournament champ, Cam Cyphert of Cochranton. Ian racked up
4 wins, including a pin and a shutout.
Mike
Sutton placed 4th. Mike won his first two matches by fall
before losing in the semifinal round to Franklin's very talented
freshman, Dakota Geer, 2-1. Mike bounced back with a pin in
the consi semis before losing another heart breaker, 1-0 to
Jake
Jakobson of Stroudsburg in the consolation finals.
Kyle
Sult didn't place but went 3-2 and added some valuable
team points. Two of his three wins were pins and the other
was a major decision. Dylan Myers and Brandon Koehler
also added a win by fall each to the team effort.
The
team will be back in action on Thursday in the District
10 AAA Teams Duals at Central Tech. The Lancers
will try to win their first District 10 Team Duals title since
2006.
Notes
From Fred Bell:
Keller
Watkins has done something amazing. He scored three technical
falls in a row at Fred Bell which gives him 15 for his career.
The old record was 12 which was set by Mike Caro from 1982-1986.
Keller's varsity wrestling career is less than two years old
and he's already shattered Caro's record.
The
entire team wrestled very well this weekend, but I want to
say congratulations especially to Chris Laird who finished
6th last year and then won the tournament this year. That's
quite a leap from 6th place to 1st place. Great job!
Jake
Baker leads the team in wins with 25. Joe Wheeling
leads the team with 15 pins. Keller Watkins is the
tech fall king with 7.

GM Wrestlers
Cruise To the Clearfield Duals Championship
The
McLane wrestling team improved to 12-0 on Saturday
as they won five dual meets and the championship at the Clearfield
Duals. The Lancers have won 14 straight duals dating back
to last season. This weekend's victories were over Sharpsville
(58-9), Port Allegany (39-24), Curwensville (70-0), Peters
Township (48-16) and 8th ranked (AA) West Branch (37-24).
This
team just seems to get better every week and the win in the
finals against West Branch was an example of how the wrestlers
seem to do whatever it takes to win. Case in point, Deane
Twitchell and Ken Stoll both upset state ranked
opponents at 132 and 138 pounds where West Branch was counting
on picking up some bonus points. Freshman, Dylan Myers,
Mike Sutton and Jake Baker all won close decisions
in that match. The Lancers also beat another state ranked
team, Port Allegany (ranked 24th in AA by Off The Mat).
Seven
McLane wrestlers finished Saturday's action with perfect records.
Ken Stoll, Mike Sutton, Chris Laird and
Jake Baker all went 5-0. Joe Wheeling went 3-0
with 3 falls, wrestling a grand total of 2 minutes and 47
seconds. Alex Thayer went 2-0, both of his wins were
by fall. Jordan Motter went 1-0 at 120 lbs. Keller
Watkins, Deane Twitchell, Kyle Sult and
Ossie Bowers all went 4-1 on Saturday. Watkins,
Twitchell and Bowers all suffered their lone
losses at the hands of state ranked opponents. Brandon
Koehler and Tyler Hendricks went 3-2 with Hendricks
picking up a couple of pins.
Notes
From Clearfield Duals:
According to the PA Power Rankings, the Lancers are ranked
#7 in the state. Five McLane wrestlers are ranked by PPR.
Joe Wheeling is 4th at 106, Mike Sutton is 16th
at 152, Ossie Bowers is 15th at 160, Tyler Hendricks
is 14th at 170 and Jake Baker is 24th at 195.
West
Branch entered the Clearfield Duals finals with a 19-1
record, their only loss up to that point was a 34-33 squeaker
to 7th ranked Brookville.
Congratulations
to Keller Watkins. One of Keller's wins at the Clearfield
Duals was a 15-0 technical fall. It was his 12th career tech
fall and that ties him with two time PIAA 3rd placer, Mike
Caro for Career Technical Falls. Mike set that record in 1986.
Congrats
to Dylan Myers and Jordan Motter who got their
first varsity wins on Saturday. Myers won two bouts,
one by fall and Motter won by decision.
Mike
Sutton is really on a roll. Mike ran his record to
15-0 on Saturday and is the lone unbeaten Lancer wrestler.
Joe Wheeling is 18-1 and leads the team with 12
pins. Joe also picked up his 80th career win against
Peters Township. Jake Baker is the first McLane wrestler
to break the 20 win mark this year. Jake leads the team
with 21 wins.
Coach
Cook picked up his 115th career head coaching win
against West Branch.

Lancers Slay
Dragons, 68-3
The
Pride N Poise Boys remained undefeated (moving to 7-0)
by beating the Dragons in Warren on Wednesday evening. The
dual meet win was the 9th straight, dating back to wins over
Union City and Meadville at the end of last season.
Joe
Wheeling, Kyle Sult, Ossie Bowers, Tyler
Hendricks, Jake Baker, Ian Mallory and Kendrick
Storm-Bailey all registered falls for McLane. Mike
Sutton racked up a 16-1 technical fall at 152 lbs. Deane
Twitchell, Ken Stoll and Chris Laird scored
major decisions in their bouts. Brandon Koehler picked
up 6 via forfeit at 113 lbs. and Keller Watkins posted
a convincing, 7-2 decision over the NW Region's top ranked
126 pounder, DJ Fehlman.
The
Lancers will be back in action this Saturday at the always
competitive Bison Duals in Clearfield, PA.
Notes
From the Warren Dual:
The
upper weights (160-285) continued to be a six man wrecking
crew on Wednesday, scoring 5 pins and a major decision.
Mike
Sutton is the lone unbeaten McLane wrestler. Mike moved
to 10-0 on the season with a technical fall against Warren.
Jake Baker leads the team with 16 wins on the year.
Joe Wheeling and Ossie Bowers each have 15.
JD leads the squad in falls with 9 stretch jobs!
Congrats
to Keller Watkins. Keller scored a convincing, 7-2
decision over the top ranked 126 pounder in the District and
NW Region, DJ Fehlman. It was Fehlman's first loss of the
season. That win should get Watkins a little more respect
when the next set of rankings are released.
The
Mclane win on Wednesday was Coach Cook's 110th as head
coach.

Lancers Move
To 6-0 With Win Over Rockets
The
Mclane wrestling team remained unbeaten with a 52-16 win over
Titusville at home on Saturday. Joe Wheeling, Kyle
Sult, Mike Sutton, Chris Laird and Ian
Mallory all scored falls for the Lancers. Keller Watkins
anchored the effort, winning by technical fall at 126 lbs.
Ken
Stoll and Jake Baker both had major decisions over
their opponents. Deane Twitchell, Ossie Bowers
and Tyler Hendricks all won by decision. Ossie
beat Tool City champ, Ehrin Lee in a rematch of last weekend's
contest. Lee won the first meeting 3-1 in the Tool City quarterfinals.
Deane had a nifty comeback win against Dalton Burns
at 132 lbs. Twitchell fell behind, 4-1 in the first period,
but came roaring back to win the bout, 10-6.
The
team will be back in action next Wednesday in a dual meet
against Warren and then will travel to Clearfield for
next Saturday's Bison Duals. The Lancers went 4-1 at
last year's Bison Duals.

McLane
Remains Unbeaten With 54-12 Win Over Ramblers
The
General McLane wrestling team ran it's dual record to 5-0
on Wednesday evening with a lopsided, 54-12 win over the visiting
Cathedral Prep Ramblers. The Ramblers were only able to manage
one win on the mat, a pin at 113 lbs. Prep's additional 6
team points came when the Lancers forfeited the 120 weight
class due to injury.
Deane
Twitchell, Ossie Bowers, Ian Mallory and
Kendrick Storm-Bailey all had pins for the Lancers.
Joe Wheeling posted an 18-0 technical fall at 106 lbs.
Tyler Hendricks posted a 10-2 major decision over Jordan
Perkowski at 170 lbs. Keller Watkins, Ken Stoll,
Kyle Sult, Mike Sutton and Chris Laird
all won by decision. Jake Baker added another 6 team
points when Prep forfeited to him.
The
152 pound bout between Mike Sutton and Dan Krysiak
was a rematch of last weekend's Tool City finals match. Sutton
posted a workmanlike 5-3 decision. He also won the Tool City
contest, 5-2. But the highlight of the evening came in the
final bout when Kendrick Storm-Bailey, wrestling his
first varsity match pinned Prep's 285 pounder. Kendrick was
trailing 2-0 and fighting off a wicked half nelson when he
stepped over Nate Carlin and stuck him at the 3:06 mark.
The
Lancers will take on a solid Titusville team on Saturday at
noon on the mats at General Mclane.
Notes
From GM vs. Prep
Mike
Sutton remained undefeated and moved to 8-0 on the year.
Joe Wheeling ran his record to 13-1 with 8 falls. Jake
Baker also sports a stellar, 14-3 won/loss record.
Congratulations
to Kendrick Storm-Bailey who not only won his first
varisty match. He pinned the District's 4th ranked 285 pounder,
Nate Carlin.

Lancers Win
Their First Ever Tool City Championship
The
General McLane wrestling team continued their winning ways
this weekend in Meadville. The Lancers turned in an unbelievable
team effort and ran away from the rest of the field to clinch
their first ever Tool City Tournament Crown. 11 of 14 McLane
wrestlers placed in the top 6, as the team amassed 203 points,
32 1/2 points ahead of a distant 2nd place DuBois.
Mike
Sutton was the lone GM individual champion. Sutton worked
his way through a very tough 152 lbs. weight class and then
claimed the title with a solid, 5-2 win over Cathedral Prep's
Dan Krysiak. Mike opened the tourney with a fall over Zane
Drum of DuBois in the preliminary round. He had his biggest
test of the tournament against 2nd seeded John Vaughn of Boiling
Springs when he pulled out a hair raising 3-2 decision. In
the semifinals Sutton pinned Greenville's Blake Horne to advance
to the championship round.
Joe
Wheeling also made the finals, but had to settle for runnerup
for the second year in a row. Joe started the tournament with
a couple of pins and then eked out a 3-2 decision over McDowell's
Charlie Lennox in their second meeting of the year in the
semis. Wheeling lost by fall in the finals to Saegertown's
sophomore sensation, Devin Brown. Brown a Steubenville, OH.
transfer was a 3rd placer at the Ohio State Championships
as a freshman and runnerup at this year's Powerade Tournament.
What
really clinched the tournament win for the Lancers however,
was a solid performance from top to bottom, especially from
160-220 lbs. Ossie Bowers (160), Tyler Hendricks
(171), Chris Laird (182), Alex Thayer (195)
and Jake Baker (220) all took 3rd place medals, one
win right after the other. Those five wrestlers each suffered
just a single loss and combined for a 20-5 record with 9 of
those wins adding team bonus points. They also won the close
ones.
Keller
Watkins and Ken Stoll both took 4th place. Keller's
2 losses were both to the same wrestler, Clearfield's Dylan
Graham. Ditto for Ken Stoll who lost twice to Saegertown's
Matt Humes. Rounding
out GM's placewinners were Hunter Hendricks (5th) and
Ian Mallory (6th).
Notes
From Tool City:
Mike
Sutton became General McLane's first Tool City champion
since Hadley Harrison won the 140 lbs. title (and the
AAA Outstanding Wrestler award) in 2006. Mike is now 7-0 and
is GM's lone unbeaten wrestler. Nice job Mike!
Alex
Thayer won the Fastest Pin award for his 12 second
fall over Warren's Dan Henry in the quaterfinals. Alex also
just missed making the Tool City finals when he came from
way behind to nearly upset LeBoeuf's Garrett Reinwald (he
ended up on the short end of an 8-7 decision). It was a great
tournament for Alex!!!
Eleven
Mclane wrestlers brought home medals! That is the most
medalists the Lancers have ever had at the Tool City Tournament,
by far. The team really shined in the consolation semifinals
and the consolation finals between 160-220 lbs. Five wrestlers
combined to win ten straight matches and take broze medals!
Congrats to Ossie Bowers, Tyler Hendricks, Alex
Thayer, Chris Laird and Jake Baker for winning
back to back to back to back to back matches not once, but
twice. What an accomplishment!!!
Coach
Cook has been at the helm for two of Mclane's top finishes
at Tool City. This year's 1st place finish and a 2nd place
finish in 2005, his first year as head coach! Congratulations!
One
other thing that needs to be mentioned. This may be one
of the most well balanced teams to have ever graced the mats
at GM. But as good as the team is, it may have been even
better if Parker McDermott hadn't sufferred a career ended
injury earlier in the year. Parker is a senior. He won
55 matches and racked up 29 pins in his 3 years as a varsity
wrestler. He was a 4th place finisher at last year's District
10 tournament and may very well have advanced deep into the
post season this year. I know Parker would like to be out
there on the mats helping his team this year. We all miss
watching you compete Parker.

McLane
Wrestlers Beat Bulldogs, 58-13
The
General McLane wrestling team ran their dual meet record to
4-0 on Wednesday evening in Meadville with a 58-13 win over
the Bulldogs. The Lancers posted a season high, seven pins
in the dual meet. Joe Wheeling, Deane Twitchell,
Ken Stoll, Kyle Sult, Alex Thayer, Ian
Mallory and Jake Baker all decked their opponents.
Keller
Watkins won by major decision, while Mike Sutton
won by forfeit. Hunter and Tyler Hendricks both
gained victories by decision. The Lancers will be back in
action this Friday and Saturday in the always tough Tool
City Tournament in Meadville.
Notes
from Meadville:
Joe
Wheeling remained unbeaten at 9-0 and racked up his 5th
fall of the season. Wheeling will have a tough field to face
in this weekend's Tool City Tournament. Good luck Joe!
Jake
Baker also sports 9 wins as he moved his record to 9-2
on the season. Keep it rolling Jake. You're looking tough!
Alex
Thayer and Joe Wheeling are tied for the team lead
with five pins each.
