MCLANE
CROWNS TWO CHAMPS AND GRABS
4TH PLACE AT FRED BELL TOURNAMENT
The
Lancers crowned two champs and placed a total of six wrestlers
at the 2022 Fred Bell Tournament, good enough for
4th place in the 31 team field! The team also took
4th in their last Bell appearance in 2020 but only had one
champ - Matt Leehan. Considering their 6th place
finish at Mid Winter Mayhem and 22nd place finish at King
of the Mountain, it's hard to come to any other conclusion
than the team has dramatically improved over the past five
or six weeks.
10th
ranked, Magnus Lloyd won the 172 lbs. title with
a 3-2 decision over 19th ranked, Logan Hoffman of Belle
Vernon in the finals. Lloyd and Hoffman were tied up at
1-1 after two periods, each scoring escapes, when Lloyd
secured a counter takedown with little time left in the
third period. Noteworthy is the fact that Magnus had to
pull out another one point victory over 17th ranked, Brock
Covell of Titusville in the semifinal round to make the
finale. Lloyd has been on fire lately, winning 10 of his
last 11 matches.
Wilson
Spires rattled off three straight pins and then ground
out a 5-2 decision over Titusville's Lodge Nosko to make
the finals at 285 lbs. Wilson faced off against Sheffield's
Danah Campbell in the finale. After a scoreless first period,
Wilson escaped immediately in the 2nd period and followed
up with a takedown at the edge of the mat. He held a 4-1
lead after two periods. Campbell chose bottom in the final
period and quickly escaped but was called for stalling twice
during the bout. Campbell, trailing 5-2, made one last ditch
takedown attempt late in the 3rd stanza, but Wilson turned
the tables and came out on top, 7-2. Wilson has also been
on a tear, winning 14 of his last 15, and his one loss in
that stretch came by way of injury default.
Kyle
Cousins went 4-1 and took 3rd place at 145 lbs. Kyle
won his first two bouts by fall before losing to 10th ranked,
Ty Watson of Penns Valley in the semifinal round. Cousins
came back strong with an 11-4 decision in the consi-semi
round and then pulled out an 8-7 decision in the 3rd place
match. Freshman, Teige Berger took home a trophy
for the third time this year. He went 3-2 and nabbed 7th
place. He dropped into the consolations after suffering
a tough, 4-1 loss to 10th ranked, Jack Darlington of Penns
Valley in the quarterfinals. Berger took 7th at the Mid
Winter Mayhem Tournament earlier in the month and was 8th
at the King Of The Mountain tourney back in December.
Ethan
Brest won four of his first five bouts, good enough
for the 8th spot on the podium. Brest lost in the second
round to 12th ranked, Tim Cafrelli of South Side and had
to win three straight bouts to make it into the medal rounds.
Hudson Spires rounded out the GM place winners with
an 8th place finish at 138 lbs. Hudson went 4-3 with three
pins in those four victories.
Dan
Mulligan went 3-2 and just missed making the medal rounds
when he dropped a 3-0 decision in the blood round. Mulligan
lost in the opening round but roared back with three consecutive
wins by fall to help the team gain valuable bonus points.
Chance Kimmy went 2-2 at 152.
The
team will be back in action on Wednesday, February 2nd at
the District 10AAA Team Duals. They'll face McDowell
in the semifinal round at 5:30 PM. The winner will take
on Cathedral Prep in the finals.

KNOCK OFF ERIE
The
GM wrestlers got back in the win column with a 66-9 thrashing
of Erie High on Wednesday in Erie. It was the 7th regular
season dual meet win of the season for the Lancers. They
completed Region 5 action with a 3-2 record and a 3rd place
finish. Unfortunately, Erie was only able to put five wrestlers
on the mat and the Lancers won three of those contested
matches.
Brandon
Dedrick (189), Russell Wismer (215) and Hudson
Spires (138) all won their bouts by fall. The team will
head to Grove City this weekend for the Fred Bell Tournament.
The tournament will feature a 31 team field. The Lancers
finished 4th at their last Fred Bell appearance where Matt
Leehan was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler
after nabbing the 138 lbs. title.

GM
SUFFERS ANOTHER TOUGH LOSS
AT THE HANDS OF FORT LEBOEUF
The
McLane wrestling team suffered another tough loss last night
at home against long time rival, Fort LeBoeuf. It was the
ninth loss of the year for the Lancers, which put them at
6-9 for the season. It's been a tough year so far, considering
the fact that of GM's 9 losses, 5 of them were by 7 points
or less and three of those were by 4 points or less. Off
and on injuries have played a roll in some of those losses.
Three starters were out of the lineup for last night's dual
against the Bison.
Posting
pins for GM last night were: Wilson Spires (285),
Hudson Spires (138) and Ryan Dedrick (172).
Kyle Cousins added a major decision at 145. Teige
Berger (106) and Dan Mulligan (160) added to
the team total with wins by decision. Magnus Lloyd
bumped up to 189 to face LeBoeuf's state ranked (7th), Dan
Church. Lloyd gave him quite a battle but ultimately dropped
a 3-1 decision.
There
was some great news from last night's dual meet. An early
total of over $20,000. was raised for The Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation and donations are still coming in! The Lancers
will be back in action Wednesday in their final Region 5
dual meet in Erie against Erie High School.
Notes:
Wilson Spires is tearing it up this season! Spires
leads the team in wins (21), pins (12) and team points (111).
He's also second in takedowns (33). Magnus Lloyd
is tied with Wilson with 21 wins and leads the team in takedowns
(35). He also leads in both near falls categories with 13-N2's
and 13-N3s! Teige Berger is just behind Wilson and
Magnus with 18 wins on the season!
It
should be noted, this year's team had an unusually tough
schedule. Of the 9 losses, 7 of them came at the hands of
state ranked teams - #12 Fort LeBoeuf, #14 Quaker Valley,
#15 Forest Hills, # 19 Mount Pleasant , #25 AA Canton, #11
Cathedral Prep and # 20 Butler. They also posted a win over
#9 Hempfield and narrowly lost to Meadville with two starters
out of the lineup.

LANCERS
PLACE 7TH AT BISON DUALS
The
McLane wrestling team made the trek to Clearfield on Saturday
to wrestle in the always challenging Bison Duals.
The GM wrestlers tested their skills against three state
ranked teams and even pulled off an upset over 9th ranked
Hempfield (AAA) out of WPIAL - and the Lancers just
missed beating 20th ranked Butler (AAA). In fact they edged
Butler, 7 to 6 in bouts won, but Butler eked out a 35-31
victory on the strength of six falls. GM also blew out DuBois
by a score of 51-14. The Lancers finished in 7th place when
they posted the 30-27 upset over Hempfield in the day's
final match.
Teige
Berger may have had the best day of all GM wrestlers.
He went 5-0, racking up three pins and a major decision.
Magnus Lloyd and Wilson Spires were also perfect,
winning five bouts each and combining for four falls. Chance
Kimmy and Russell Wismer both went 3-2. All three
of Wismer's victories were deck jobs! Brandon Dedrick
picked up two wins, both pins!
The
team will be back in action next Tuesday, January 25th against
12th ranked (AA) Fort LeBoeuf at home on TAKEDOWN CYSTIC
FIBROSIS NIGHT! Please come out to support the team
and this great charity!
Notes:
Magnus Lloyd became the first GM wrestler to break
the 20 win mark for the season. He now has 21. Wilson
Spires has 20 W's and is the first wrestler to break
double figures in falls. He has 11. Teige Berger
is not far behind with 17 victories!

BULLDOGS
SQUEAK PAST GM
The
Lancers made the trek to Meadville on Wednesday for a dual
with one of their Region 5 rivals and came out on the short
end of a 31-27 decision. The lead changed hands four times
and wasn't decided until the very last bout. GM held a commanding,
27-13 lead after Wilson Spires pinned Jason Phillips, but
that lead was wiped out as the Bulldogs won the last four
weight classes.
Posting
falls for the Lancers were; Hudson Spires (138),
Daniel Mulligan (160), and Wilson Spires (285).
Chance Kimmy added a decision at 152 lbs. and Ryan
Dedrick won by forfeit at 172. Magnus Lloyd,
who's ranked 12th in the state at 172 lbs., bumped up to
face off against 7th ranked, Griffin Buzzell at 189 lbs.
Buzzell won that contest by a score of 9-2.
GM
is now 4-5 overall and 2-2 in Region action with one Region
5 match to go against Erie High. The team will be back in
action on Saturday, January 22nd at the Clearfield Bison
Duals. The Lancers went 4-1 at the Bison Duals during
the 2019-2020 season.

LANCERS
ROLL PAST DRAGONS, 57-15
The
McLane wrestling team rolled past the Warren Dragons on
Wednesday by a score of 57-15 on the strength of six pins.
The Lancers won ten of thirteen weight classes and nine
of them were worth bonus points. Jessi Stempka, Teige
Berger, Kyle Cousins, Chance Kimmy, Daniel
Mulligan and Magnus Lloyd all flattened their
Warren opponents. Wilson Spires, Ethan Simko
and Hudson Spires picked up forfeit wins. Russell
Wismer rounded out the GM scoring with a hard fought
4-2 decision.
The
team looked sharp and confident coming off a 6th place finish
at the Mid-Winter Mayhem tournament in Indiana, PA. last
weekend. The Lancers upped their overall dual meet record
to 4-4 and their Region 5 record to 2-1. They will be on
the road next Wednesday against the Bulldogs in Meadville.
Meadville is coming off an impressive 3rd place team finish
at last weekend's Tool City Tournament where the Bulldogs
had three finalists. It could be an interesting contest.
Notes:
Jessi Stempka has racked up an amazing 10 pins already
and the season isn't quite half over yet. Keep 'em coming,
Jessi! Magnus Lloyd leads the team with 16 wins,
with 7 falls, 2 tech falls and 1 major decision! Teige
Berger now leads the team with 25 takedowns. Wilson
Spires is right behind him with 24 - Spires also has
the lead in team points with 75.

SEVEN
GM GRAPPLERS PLACE
AT MID-WINTER MAYHEM
The
McLane wrestling team had a very successful tournament this
past weekend. GM secured a 6th place finish among a 30 team
field at the Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament in Indiana, PA.
Seven Lancers placed in the top eight at the tough tourney,
which included several state ranked teams. 172 pounder,
Magnus Llyod who was a #5 seed, led the charge
with a 4th place finish. Lloyd won 5 of 7 bouts with both
of his losses coming at the hands of #4 seed, Waylon Wehler
of Saint Marys by the same score of 2-1. Jessi Stempka
nabbed 5th place in the 189 pound division with 6 big wins.
Of those 6 wins, 3 were pins and two were technical falls.
Along the way, Stempka (seeded 13th) knocked off the #2
and # 6 tournament seeds, both of whom were state ranked.
106 pound freshman, Teige Berger is now two for two.
The freshman placed 8th at the King Of The Mountain Tournament
in December and then nabbed 7th place this weekend. Berger
won his first two matches by fall before losing to the #4
seed in the quarterfinals. Teige bounced back winning a
5-0 shutout to secure a spot on the podium and then pulled
off a 5-2 decision over Fort LeBoeuf's state ranked Andie
Przybycien in the 7th place match. Wilson Spires
was on a roll, winning his first three bouts all by fall,
on his way to the semifinals but suffered a tournament ending
injury against #2 seed, Frederick Retter of Quakertown.
Unfortunately, Wilson was unable to continue and had to
settle for 6th place. Wilson also placed 6th at last year's
Mayhem tourney.
Chance
Kimmy also picked up a 6th place finish at 152 pounds.
Kimmy pinned his first two opponents before falling to the
#1 seed, state ranked, JT Hogan of Daniel Boone. He then
bounced back with two W's to make the podium. Kyle Cousins
stormed to a 7th place medal at 152 pounds. Cousins was
an underdog, seeded 11th in the tournament, but he racked
up five wins. He lost to the #6 seed, Saint Marys' Andrew
Wolfganger in the second round but came back, posting two
straight wins before coming out on the short end of a major
decision in the consi quarters. In his final match, Kyle
turned the tables on Wolfganger and rolled to an 8-2 decision.
Rounding out the medal winners was Dan Mulligan at
160. Mulligan was unseeded, but went 5-2 in the tournament,
including upsets over the #7, #5 and #10 seeds. His victory
in the 7th place match was also a table turner. Mulligan
picked up a 3-2 decision over Devyn Flleger of Cranberry
who had beaten him in the second round.
Hudson
Spires just missed the medal stand, posting a 3-2 record
with three pins. Ethan Snyder went 2-2 at 113 pounds.
Brandon Dedrick also won twice, both times by fall.
Seven other GM wrestlers picked up wins. Ian Salisbury,
Ben Watkins, Jacob Zeiser, Ethan Brest,
Jarod Peyton, Brady Askins and Connor Avery
all added to the team point total.
The
team will be back in action on January 12th at home against
the Warren Dragons. The Lancers shut out Warren last January.
Notes:
Magnus Llyod leads the team with 15 wins on the season
- Jessi Stempka and Wilson Spires are right behind
him with 14 and 13 respectively! Stempka leads the pack
with 9 pins. And here's a stunner - Wilson Spires
leads the team with 24 takedowns. I don't think I have EVER
seen a heavyweight lead the team in takedowns. WTG, Wilson!!!

RAMBLERS
ROLL OVER GM
Erie
Cathedral Prep won the first seven bouts to cruise to a
40-30 victory over the Lancers on Wednesday at General McLane.
The match started at the 120 lbs. weight class and Prep
pulled out to a 37-0 lead before Magnus Lloyd got the Lancers
on the board with a pin at 172. Although GM won 5 of the
last 6 bouts it wasn't enough to overcome the massive opening
deficit.
Jessi
Stempka, Connor Avery and Ethan Snyder all received forfeits
and Wilson Spires added a win by fall at 285. The Lancers
are now 3-4 overall and 1-1 in Region contests. The team
will travel to Indiana, PA. this weekend for the Mid-Winter
Mayhem Tournament.
