SIX GM WRESTLERS MEDAL AT FRED BELL

The McLane wrestlers nabbed six medals at the 39th annual Fred Bell Tournament this past weekend. Wilson Spires led the charge with a 3rd place finish. Hudson Spires and Ryan Dedrick placed 6th, Clay Kimmy and Chance Kimmy took 7th and Derek Dube was 8th. The team placed 9th in a 41 team field, despite still being short two starters (Jessi Stemka and Magnus Lloyd).

Wilson Spires, who battled injuries and got a late start this season, struggled early on. But he was on fire at Fred Bell. Spires ran off three straight wins, all pins, before dropping a 1-0 squeaker to 13th ranked, Daniel Williams of Laurel in the quarterfinals. Undaunted, Wilson proceeded to run off four more victories in succession. One of those was a 3-1 upset over 10th ranked, Coltin Hill of Laurel and another, a 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker over Jack Sroka of McDowell, in the 3rd place bout.

Hudson Spires and Ryan Dedrick both advanced to the semifinal round before suffering defeats. Hudson won four in a row, 3 by fall, before falling to former state qualifier, 13th ranked Carter Weaver. He then came up just short in the consolation semis by a 9-7 score. Spires had to default his final bout due to an injury. Dedrick won three bouts in a row, all by fall, to reach the semis. He lost an 8-1 decision to 22nd ranked, Troy Peterson of McDowell and just missed making the 3rd place wrestle-off when he came out on the short end of an 8-6 decision to Slippery Rock's Braiden Reich. Dedrick had to settle for 6th when he lost his final bout to Kollin Brungart of Penns Valley.

One of the most impressive comebacks for the Lancers was a win streak in the consolation rounds by Freshman, Clay Kimmy. Kimmy lost his first bout, a 6-5 heart breaker to Brayden Lisowski of Penns Vallley. But he recovered and ran off four straight victories, all nail biters, before losing to Lisowski again in the consolation quarterfinals. Clay pulled out a 6-2 upset win in his 7th place bout over #16, Cole Bish of Redbank Valley. He also knocked off another state ranked opponent, #24 Jacob Rodgers of North East in the blood round.

Derek Dube came into the tournament with a modest 5-8 record, but he was on top of his game this weekend. Dube started with a 27 second pin before losing to #1 ranked, Devon Magro of Bishop McCort in the second round. He recovered nicely and ran off three straight wins to make the medal rounds. Chance Kimmy pinned his first opponent before losing to two time state finalist, top ranked, Grant McKay of Laurel in the semis. He bounced back with another win in the blood round to secure a trip to the podium.

Ben Watkins and Connor Avery just missed placing in the tourney. Both wrestlers made it to the blood round but were eliminated one match short of medaling. Watkins went 3-2 and Avery 2-2. Teige Berger went 3-2 but was in a loaded weight class and was eliminated after five bouts, still two matches short of the medal rounds. Matt Caro also went 3-2 with three falls to his credit before he was eliminated.

Next up for the Lancers is a District 10AA Duals wrestle-in vs. North East on Wednesday, February 1st at General McLane. The D10 AA Duals Tournament is set for Saturday and the winner will take on Greenville in the first round.

News and Notes:

Wilson Spires registered his 100th career win in the fourth consolation round and then went on to add 101, 102 and 103. He became just the 30th wrestler to join GM's 100 win club. His three falls at Fred Bell also brought his career pin total to 63. That tied him with Frank Myers (1983) for fourth place on the GM All Time Falls list. Only Caleb Baker (72), Hayden Harrison (67) and Travis Bryant (66) have more pins than Wil. There's still a lot of wrestling ahead this season, so don't be surprised if Spires challenges the the top three before it's all said and done! A big HOO-RAH to Clay Kimmy, who defeated, not one, but two state ranked wrestlers when it really counted - once in the blood round and again in the 7th place match!

Congratulations to Senior, Sam Cain who got his first varsity win at Bell, a lopsided 10-4 decision. That win is especially noteworthy because Sam didn't start wrestling until last season. Way to stick with it, Sam!!! Chance Kimmy leads the team with 24 wins on the season. Four other teammates joined him in the 20 win club this weekend. Clay Kimmy and Hudson Spires now have 22, Kyle Cousins and Ryan Dedrick both have 20. Ryan Dedrick holds the team lead with 17 pins.

The team did well to finish in the top 10 at Fred Bell - under the circumstances. But it was their lowest team finish in many years. The Lancers won back to back titles in 2015 and 2016, as well as in 2013. They were tourney runnerups in 2011 and 2017. They placed 3rd in 2014 and 2018. 4th in 2012, 2020 and 2022 and 5th in 2019. 6th place was previously their lowest finish since they started competing annually in the tournament in 2010. The Lancers did not compete at Bell during the shortened 2020-21 season.

MCLANE WRESTLERS TOP YELLOWJACKETS, 42-28

The GM wrestling team traveled to Girard for their final region dual meet of the season on Wednesday and came away with a 42-28 victory. The win gave the team a 4-1 record and sole possession of 2nd place in Region 4, behind unbeaten Fort LeBoeuf. The Lancers are 8-4 overall with the District 10AA Duals coming up in February.

Still missing two starters from the lineup, it made for a close contest for the Lancers. Girard took the lead out of the gate and Girard actually led 19-18 after the first seven bouts. But a pin by Wilson Spires at 285 and a Girard forfeit at 107 gave GM the lead for good. The Lancers won four of the last six bouts to seal the victory.

Hudson Spires, Chance Kimmy, Ben Watkins, Wilson Spires, Clay Kimmy and Teige Berger all pinned their Girard opponents. Dom Snyder picked up the forfeit. Chance Kimmy had the evening's fastest pin (56 seconds). The team will make a trip to Grove City on Friday to compete in the annual Fred Bell Tournament. The Lancers placed 4th their last two trips to Bell. The last time the team won the tournament was in 2016.

Notes:

A tip of the cap to Chance Kimmy, who became the first GM wrestler to reach 20 wins this season. Last night's win was also the 50th of Kimmy's career. Chance also leads the team with 15 falls! Keep them coming!

Wilson Spires, who's been out with injuries for a good part of the season, was back last night with a great performance. He took his opponent down three times before showing him the lights at the 2:29 mark. It was Wil's 7th win of the season and 96th of his career. Wilson could possibly notch his 100th career win at Fred Bell if all goes well. Good luck, Wil!!!

Kyle Cousins, Hudson Spires, Clay Kimmy, Magnus Lloyd and Ryan Dedrick are all close to joining Chance Kimmy in the 20 win club. Hopefully they all pull it off this weekend in Grove City.

GM GOES 3-2 AT BISON DUALS

The GM wrestling team traveled to Clearfield on Saturday and made the best of a tough situation. With four of the team's starters still sidelined, the back ups stepped up once again and did a commendable job. The Lancers beat Port Allegany, DuBois and Titusville and suffered losses to Montoursville and Canton, the last one by just 3 points.

Kyle Cousins and Chance Kimmy were GM's big guns on Saturday. Both went 5-0 on the day. Kimmy registered 4 pins and Cousins had 4 pins and a major decision. Clay Kimmy also had a great day, he went 4-1 with 3 falls. Dom Snyder, Hudson Spires, Ben Watkins and Brady Haskins all notched 3 wins each. Ethan Snyder, Landon Harnett, Derek Dube and Ryan Dedrick all added 2 wins to the team total.

The Lancers will take on Yellowjackets in Girard on Wednesday, in their final Region 4 match. A win would secure a runnerup finish in the region. After that the team will head to Grove City for the annual Fred Bell Tournament on Friday. The Lancers placed 4th their last two trips. The last time the team won Bell was in 2016.

Notes:

Kyle Cousins and Chance Kimmy are both just one victory away from being the first Lancers to reach the 20 win mark this season. Kimmy is 19-6 and Cousins is 19-7. Chance Kimmy also leads the team in falls, along with Ryan Dedrick. Both wrestlers have racked up 14 falls so far. Kyle Cousins leads the team with 37 takedowns and also has scored more team points (85.5). Cousins also has 13 falls to his credit, just one behind the team leaders. Freshman, Bernie Kirely secured his first varsity win, a fall in 1:29 against Canton!

Just for the record - both of the team's losses at the Bison Duals were to ranked teams. GM is currently ranked #19, Montoursville #21 and Canton #18. Last week's loss was to #9 Fort LeBoeuf. It's not been an easy season for the banged up Lancer squad.

LANCERS FALL TO #9 FORT LEBOEUF

The McLane wrestling team lost their first region dual meet last night in Waterford to 9th ranked, Fort LeBoeuf, 43-21. That win put the Bison in a position to win this year's Region 4 title. It was an uphill battle from the start with three starters, two of them state ranked, out of the GM lineup. Magnus Lloyd, Wilson Spires and Jessi Stempka all sat out the contest. On top of that, the team lost three of four swing matches, two of them by a single point and one by a mere 2 points.

The match started at 285 lbs. and the Bison shot out to a 22-0 lead over the first five bouts. GM won four of the next five bouts with pins by Hudson Spires, Kyle Cousins and Chance Kimmy to pull GM to within 7 points. But LeBoeuf took the last three to seal the deal.

Two McLane wrestlers stood out in last night's contest. Back up, Brady Haskins wrestled a great match in a losing effort to LeBoeuf's Kyle Myers at 189 lbs. Haskins was taken down and put on his back in the first period, but fought his way out of a near fall situation. Down 5-0, Brady scored a reversal to make it 5-2 to end period one. In the second stanza, Haskins escaped, then countered a Myers shot with a takedown of his own and knotted the score at 5. Myers reversed Haskins with about 1:20 left in the third period to make it 7-5. Brady escaped with a minute remaining but wasn't able to secure the winning takedown. Landon Harnett pulled off a 4-2 upset win over Blake Glass at 133. He took down his opponent, worked a cradle and finally got 2 back points to take a 4-0 lead. Glass got 2 back points with a tilt late in the second period to make it 4-2, but Harnett rode him out in the final period to nail down the victory!

The Lancers are now 4-2 overall and 3-1 in region competition with just one Region 4 contest to go, against Girard. The team will be back in action this Saturday at the Bison Duals in Clearfield.

3 MCLANE WRESTLERS PLACE AT MID-WINTER MAYHEM

The 2023 Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament this past weekend was a real meat grinder, with 48 teams entered and 64 man brackets in most weight classes. With a load of state ranked wrestlers, it was a preview of what the PIAA Individual Championships this coming March might be like. 17 GM wrestlers competed at tournament, which was held at IUP, and three of them brought home some hardware. Hudson Spires, Jessi Stempka and Magnus Lloyd placed 7th, 5th and 4th, respectively. Just missing the podium were Clay Kimmy, Kyle Cousins, Chance Kimmy, Ryan Dedrick and Wilson Spires. All five lost in the blood round. Cousins came the closest to making the medal rounds. He won his first three bouts, but lost in the quarterfinals to the top ranked 152 pounder in the state, Conner Harer of Montgomery and then dropped a heart breaking 7-6 decision to #7 seed, Andrew Wolfganger of St. Marys.

Of the three medalists, Magnus Lloyd had the best day. Lloyd came in as the #7 seed and then wrestled his way to a 4th place finish in the 189 lbs. weight class. Magnus posted a 6-2 record and knocked off the #8, #4 and #2 seeds along the way. He suffered his first loss, unexpectedly, to the #10 seed in the second round but came roaring back with five straight wins to make the consolation finals, before losing to #5 Adrian Gasek of Parkland (ranked 5th AAA) in the finale. Jessi Stempka posted a 5-3 record on his way to a 6th place finish at 172 lbs. Jessi entered the tournament unseeded, but managed to knock off the #10, #7, #16 and #6 seeds, before dropping a wild, 13-12 decision to the #9 seed, Tasso Whipple of Penn Trafford (ranked 21st AAA) in the 5th place match. It's worth noting that four of Stempka's five wins came by way of fall. Hudson Spires also entered the tournament unseeded, but he knocked off the #9 and #8 seeds on his way to a 7th place finish. In the 7th place match he registered a 12-2 major decision over #12 seed, Avery Bitter of Johnsonburg. Hudson dropped into the consolations when he lost in the quarterfinal round to #1 seed and tournament champ, Nico Taddy (ranked 5th AAA) of West Allegheny.

Clay Kimmy went 4-2 and wrestled very well, winning four in a row after losing his opening round bout to Griiffin Reid of North Allegheny, 3-0. He came up just short of making the podium when he lost to #6 seed, Hunter Geibel (ranked 20th AA) of Commodore Perry in the blood round. Chance Kimmy also just missed the medal stand. He lost his first contest to Kohen Shingara of Line Mountain and then cranked out three straight victories, including wins over the #4 and #12 seeds, before state ranked (12th AAA) Gavyn Beck of Franklin Regional ended his tournament. Ryan Dedrick made a nice run in the tournament, posting a 3-2 record. He lost in the second round to Danny Church (ranked 2nd AA) of Fort LeBoeuf, then won his next two bouts. He was eliminated when he was beaten by 16th ranked (AA) Grant Mathias of Berlin Brothers. All three of Ryan's wins were pins. Wilson Spires who's just getting back into action after a pre-season injury also went 3-2. Spires entered the tournament as the #2 seed, but suffered a 5-0 loss in his second bout to unseeded, Bailey Miller of Brookville. Wilson dropped a 1-0 decision to Miller a week ago in the Brookville dual meet. Wilson won his next two bouts but then lost to #8 seed Josh Nittenger of Athens, just before the medal rounds. The team placed 22nd.

The Lancers will be back in action on Wednesday (01/18/23) in Waterford against the Bison of Fort LeBoeuf in an important Region match up. The Region 4 title is on the line.

News and Notes:

The General McLane JV team wrestled a great tournament placing 5th of 34 teams. Brady Haskins won the 172 lbs. crown and Sam Cain was 3rd at 107 lbs.

Magnus Lloyd has a team best 18 wins after Mayhem. Ryan Dedrick leads the team with 13 pins already. Chance Kimmy and Magnus Lloyd have 9 falls each.

LANCERS WHIP HUSKIES, 72-3

The Lancers took on the Harborcreek Huskies, Wednesday at home and came away with their Region 4 record still unblemished. Harborcreek had to forfeit four weight classes, but GM won eight of the nine contested bouts - all by fall. Wilson Spires opened with a first period pin over Ryan Gardner at 285 lbs. Clay Kimmy, Christian Gillette, Derek Dube, Kyle Cousins, Chance Kimmy, Magnus Lloyd and Ryan Dedrick all followed up with pins of their own. Freshman, Derek Dube notched his first varsity win at 145 lbs. with a first period pin. Chance Kimmy posted the evening's fastest pin in 30 seconds flat at 160.

Teige Berger, Bernie Kirely, Landon Harnett and Ben Watkins all received forfeits. With the win, the team improved to 3-0 in Region 4 and 4-1 overall. They will be back in action at this weekend's Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament in Indiana, PA. The Lancers had seven place winners at last year's Mayhem and placed 6th as a team. At last year's event Magnus Lloyd was 4th, Jessi Stempka 5th, Chance Kimmy and Wilson Spires were 6th. Teige Berger, Kyle Cousins and Dan Mulligan placed 7th. Spires suffered an injury in last year's semifinal round and had to sit out the last two matches.

Notes:

Magnus Lloyd and Ryan Dedrick lead the team with 12 wins each and Dedrick also leads the pack with 10 pins. Magnus Lloyd and Ryan Dedrick lead the team with 21 takedowns each. Chance Kimmy is right behind them with 20. Wilson Spires is back in the lineup and rolling towards the 100 wiin mark - he now has 91. Spires most likely would have been only the second GM wrestler, besides Matt Leehan, to hit 100 before his senior year, had it not been for the shortened 2020-2021 season, where he only had 24 matches. Wil also posted his 59th fall last night, moving him into 10th place on the 'Career Pins' list.

The team's biggest test of the year so far will come on January 18th in Waterford when they take on 15th ranked, Fort LeBoeuf in an important Region 4 match.

WRESTLERS FALL TO BROOKVILLE - HOLD ON TO DEFEAT
HICKORY ON TAKEDOWN CF NIGHT

The GM wrestling team went 1-1 last night, losing to #15 Brookville, but then bouncing back to beat last year's District 10 AA Team Dual champs, Hickory, in the finale. The Lancers got out in front of Brookville, 12-0 after the first three bouts, but the Raiders came roaring back to win eight of the last 10 and secure a 34-24 victory. The Lancers charged out hard against Hickory, winning the first six bouts, four of them by fall, to take a 32-0 lead. Hickory ran off three wins in a row at 107, 114 and 121 to make it 32-15. Teige Berger clinched it for the Lancers when he posted an 8-5 decision over Logan Rogers at 127.

Notable matches in the Brookville dual were: Jackson Zimmerman (ranked #20 AAA) dropped to 189 to face Magnus Lloyd (#7 AA). Zimmerman pulled off a 9-5 decision. At 152 lbs., Kyle Couisins (#19 AA) wowed the crowd with a rare, leg cradle and pinned Burke Fleming at the 2:52 mark. Hudson Spires had a close match at 145 lbs. vs. Brecken Cieleski. Cieleski scored the first and last takedowns in the bout, but Spires had three takedowns and an escape between those and squeezed out a 7-5 decision. Chance Kimmy also eked out a close, 2-1 win over Brookville senior, Coyha Brown at 160 lbs. Kimmy scored only one first period takedown in the match, but he was so tough on the mat, it turned out to be enough.

Kyle Cousins led off with a dominating performance against Hickory's Liam Slicker, posting a 15-0 technical fall. Chance Kimmy, Ben Watkins, Ryan Dedrick and Wilson Spires all pinned their Hornet opponents for what turned out to be crucial bonus points. Magnus Lloyd bounced back in the Hickory match to beat Ty Holland (#25 AAA) by a 7-2 count at 189 lbs.Teige Berger won a hard fought, 8-5 decision over Logan Rogers for the clincher. Berger scored the first takedown, but gave up an escape and a takedown in the last 30 seconds of the first period. The tide turned in that bout when Teige rode Rogers out for the entire second period. Rogers cut Berger about halfway through period 3 and scored a takedown to take a 5-3 lead. But then was called twice for stalling for hanging on Berger's legs. That made it 5-5. Rogers cut Teige loose, hoping to score the winning takedown. Teige shot in and appeared to have a takedown at the edge of the mat, but he didn't get the call. With just seconds remaining, Berger countered a Rogers shot and spun behind to make the final score, 8-5.

The Lancers will be back in action next Wednesday at home and will take on the Harborcreek Huskies. The last meeting between the two teams was in December of 2019. The Lancers won that contest, 52-27.

-----------------

Notes:

The last time the Lancers faced Brookville was in December of 2002 at the KSA Duals in FL. At the time, Tim Mulholland was still head coach and Ryan Cook was in his second year as assistant. Brookville had a very strong team that year. In fact the Lancers, who racked up 23 wins that season, lost only 3 times, twice to Brookville (28-37 and 38-31) and once to Cumberland Valley at the state team duals. The Raiders now hold a 3-0 record against GM.

The Lancers last met Hickory during the shortened '20-21 season. Hickory prevailed in that one, 41-31.

McLane put on another amazing Takedown Cystic Fibrosis event with $20,112.00 raised before the match began and donations are still pouring in. Hopefully they will exceed last year's record of $26,322.00.

Magnus Lloyd and Ryan Dedrick lead the team with 11 wins each. Dedrick leads the team in pins - he has 9! Magnus has the most team points with 57 - Ryan is right behind him with 54.
