LANCERS WIN
FRED BELL TOURNAMENT TITLE
The
McLane wrestling team clinched their first Fred Bell
Tournament title since 2016 this past weekend in Grove
City. But Penns Valley made the Lancers fight for the crown.
The two teams traded leads throughout the weekend with the
Lancers finally coming out on top in the last round by a
mere 5 1/2 points. The Lancers did not crown an individual
champion, but they did end up winning more medals than any
other team. Eight GM wrestlers brought home medals - Christian
Gillette - 8th, Chance Kimmy - 7th, Hudson
Spires - 6th, Clay Kimmy - 5th, Peter Sadchikov
- 4th, Derek Dube - 3rd, Magnus Lloyd - 2nd
and Ryan Dedrick - 2nd.
Magnus
Lloyd steamrolled his way into the Bell finals, racking
up three pins and a major decision. His only loss came at
the hands of top seed, Tavio Hoose of Southwestern, last
year's NY state champ at 172 lbs. Hoose, a sophomore, came
into the tournament with a 40-1 record, but he had his hands
full with Lloyd in the finals. Neither wrestler was able
to muster a takedown. The two battled to a 1-1 stalemate
through the first 6 minutes and the first overtime. Hoose
finally prevailed by a 2-1 score when he was able to escape
near the end of the second tie breaker period. Ryan Dedrick
also had little trouble making his way into the finals.
He pinned his first two opponents and scored a technical
fall in the quarterfinals - then bested state ranked (19-AAA),
Ty Tidball, 5-1 in the semis. Dedrick finally met his match
in the finals against top seed, undefeated Brenan Morgan
of Central Valley. Morgan, an AA state runner up last year,
won by fall.
Derek
Dube might have been the biggest surprise of the weekend
with his 3rd place finish. Dube entered the tournament with
a modest, 12-8 record and was seeded 12th. Apparently Derek
didn't take his low seeding too seriously. He proceeded
to post a 5-1 record and knock off the #7, 9, 4 and 5 seeds
on his way to the bronze medal. His only loss came at the
hands of state ranked, (11-AA) Reece Bechakas of Kane in
the quarterfinal round. Bechakas went on to win the 160
lbs. title. Peter Sadchikov, who was seeded 11th
also turned a few heads with a 4th place finish at 145 lbs.
He won his first four bouts, three by fall, including an
upset of the #4 seed, to make the semifinal round. He finally
fell at the hands of 5th seed, Brody Beck of Cambridge Springs.
Peter bounced back, scoring a major decision over the #9
seed in the consi semis before falling to #3 seed, Ryder
Say of Meadville in the consolation final, by a score of
2-0.
Clay
Kimmy took 5th place at 133 lbs. Kimmy was the #6 seed
and went 5-2. He had a couple of pins to his credit, including
one against the #4 seed, Carmine Calimeri of Southwestern,
NY in the 5th place bout. Hudson Spires, who has
been battling injuries as of late, took 6th place at 160.
All three of Hudson's victories were by fall! Chance
Kimmy, seeded #6, went 5-2 and snagged 7th place
at 152 lbs. He pinned his first three opponents before suffering
a heart breaking, 5-3 loss to #3 seed, state ranked (10
AA) Caullin Summers of Sharpsville in the quarterfinals.
Chance bounced back with pin over Harborcreek's Nick Fisher
in the blood round. Kimmy suffered a second loss in the
consi quarters, but won by default in the 7th place match.
Rounding out the GM place winners was Christian Gillette
at 145 lbs. Gillette came into the tournament unseeded but
won three matches when it counted to clear himself a spot
on the podium.
Several
other GM wrestlers who didn't medal also wrestled very well
this weekend. At 121 lbs., unseeded, Josh Caro went
4-2 and won some tough matches, including a 5-3 overtiime
victory over the #9 seed. He barely missed placing when
he lost by decision in the blood round. #10 seed, Lukas
Kuffer also bowed out in the blood round after winning
three times, twice by fall. Landon Harnett went 3-2
before exiting the tournament. All three of Landon's wins
were pins! Ben
Watkins who was unseeded went 4-2 with three pins at
172 lbs., including a 9-4 win over the #11 seed. He also
just missed placing when he lost to the #4 seed in the blood
round. 285 pounder, Dan Topel won 3 matches, all
by fall. It was a surprisingly good performance for the
junior who has seen limited action this year. Ethan Snyder
went 2-2 with two pins. Both of his losses were close ones
to the #6 and #8 seeds. Freshman, Logan Hayes, who
was wrestling in just his second varsity tournament also
went 2-2 with two falls. Logan's defeats came at the hands
of the #4 and #7 seeds. Luke Gray and Matt Caro
each had a win by fall in the tournament.
The
Lancers will be back in action on February 2nd in the District
10 AA Team Duals. GM is the #4 seed and will take on
the winner of the #5 Greenville vs. #12 North East match.
If the Lancers win that match they will most likely face
#1 seed Reynolds in the semifinals. Last year GM knocked
off North East, 51-17 in a D10 Duals wrestle-in match, then
beat Greenville 40-28 in the QF, before losing to Fort LeBoeuf,
34-21. Ironically, Fort LeBoeuf lost to Reynolds in the
finals, but went on to place 2nd at the PIAA Tournament,
while Reynolds went 0-2.
----------------------
Notes:
Magnus
Lloyd now has 113 career wins. That ties former GM wrestler,
Eric Zelina for 14th place on the all-time wins list. He
also leads the team with 30 wins this season. Chance
Kimmy is getting close to the century mark, he now has
98 career wins. With his four pins at the tornament, Chance
has 21 pins this season and 60 in his career. That ties
him with former GM standouts, Luke Harrison and Hadley
Harrison for 9th place on the all-time pins list. Having
watched both Harrisons wrestle for four years, I can say
that Chance is in good company!
In
a couple of rare occurrences, GM placed two wrestlers in
the same weight class, not once but twice. Peter Sadchikov
and Chris Gillette took 4th and 8th place, respectively
at 145 lbs. Then Derek Dube placed 3rd and Hudson
Spires 6th at 160 lbs.
To
illustrate how well the team wrestled this weekend, they
combined for 58 individual wins - 39 of those
were pins!
This
was the fourth time the Lancers have won a Fred Bell
team title. They won back to back titles in 2015 and
2016 and also won the crown in 2012. GM finished 2nd in
2011 and 2017. They also have a couple of 3rd place finishes
in 2014 and 2018.

GM ROUTS GIRARD
ON SENIOR NIGHT
The
McLane wrestling team concluded the regular dual meet season
with a lopsided, 63-9 victory over Region 4 opponent Girard
on Wednesday at home. They couldn't have asked for a better
regular season finale. Not only was there a large crowd
on hand for Senior Night, but all five won their
bouts!
Seniors,
Chance Kimmy, Ben Watkins, Magnus Lloyd
and Ryan Dedrick all racked up pins for the Lancers
and Christian Gillette added a dominating, 9-4 decision
to make it a perfect night for the seniors! The underclassmen
did their part in support of the one sided victory. Dom
Snyder, Josh Caro, Lukas Kuffer and Nick
Wiest also pinned their Yellowjacket counterparts. Ethan
Snyder tacked on a win by forfeit. Chance Kimmy
had the fastest pin of the night, decking his opponent in
just 25 seconds! Of the 13 bouts, GM came out on top in
11 of them.
The
Lancers conclude the regular season with an overall record
of 9-3. They went 4-1 and finished in second place in Region
4. The only blemish on their region record was an 8 point
loss to #7 Fort LeBoeuf, that could have gone either way.
The Lancers now look towards the post season District 10AA
team duals. Hopefully the Lancers can add to their win total
and make a trip to Hershey in February. GM will be back
in action this coming weekend at the Fred Bell Tournament
in Grove City. 38 teams will be competing in this year's
event. The team will try to improve on last year's 9th place
finish.
Notes:
Magnus
Lloyd leads the team with 26 wins this season. He also
has 109 career wins. Chance Kimmy has 93 career wins,
so the countdown to 100 begins. Sophomore, Clay Kimmy
leads the team in takedowns (45), escapes (36), reversals
(13) and nearfall 3's (14). Congrats to Nick Wiest
on his first varsity win, a pin vs. Girard!
The
seeds for the District 10AA Team Duals should be
released shortly. Expect the Lancers to be somewhere towards
the top of that list. The post season is upon us!

LANCER PLACE
3RD AT BISON DUALS
The
McLane wrestling team wrestled very well this weekend, winning
four out of five matches at the Clearfield Bison Duals.
They beat DuBois, 46-24, Kane, 69-3 and Brockway 61-10,
before losing a close one to #19 Montoursville, 32-29 in
the semifinals. The Lancers finished with a 35-24 win over
#21 Port Allegany in the consolation finals. GM improved
their overall dual meet record to 8-3.
Three
GM wrestlers had perfect weekends. Magnus Lloyd went
5-0 with 4 pins. Chance Kimmy also went 5-0 and registered
3 pins. Peter Sadchikov also went 5-0 with 3 falls.
Josh Caro stepped up this weekend. He posted a 4-0
record with 1 technical fall and a major decision to his
credit.
Ryan
Dedrick went 4-1 with 2 falls. The only loss Dedrick
suffered was to #8 ranked, Cole Yonkin of Montoursville.
Clay Kimmy went 4-1 and added 2 pins to his total.
Clay's one loss was also to a state ranked opponent. Derek
Dube went 3-1 with a couple of pins. Matt Caro
stepped into the lineup against Brockway and got another
win under his belt. Dom Snyder, Lukas Kuffer
and Ben Watkins all went 3-2.
The
team will be back in action on Wednesday, January 24th
for Senior Night, at home against Girard. It will be
the Lancer's last Region 4 dual meet.
-------------------
Notes:
All
three of the teams losses this season have been close and
at the hands of state ranked teams. They suffered a 6 point
loss to #12 Chestnut Ridge in their season opener, an 8
point loss to #7 Fort LeBoeuf and a 3 point loss to Bison
Duals champs, #19 Montoursville. The Lancers have also defeated
two state ranked teams. They rolled over #15 St. Marys in
early January and defeated #21 Port Allegany this weekend
in Clearfield. Their 8-3 record has been well earned!
With
his 5 wins at the Bison Duals, Magnus Lloyd improved
his career win total to 108. He needs two more to tie GM
legend, Hudson Harrison for 20th place on the all
time wins list! Magnus also leads the team with 25 W's this
year. Chance Kimmy and Ryan Dedrick are close
behind with 22 each. Chance has also has racked up 16 pins
on the season!
The
Bison Duals are one of the longest running tournaments the
Lancers have competed in. The first year the team competed
in the tournament was duruing the 2009-2010 season. They
have competed in every Bison Duals since, with the exception
of 2018-2019 when the event was canceled due to bad weather
and the pandemic shortened 2020-2021 season. During that
time, GM won two titles (2014-2015 and 2012-2013). They
beat West Branch in the 2013 finals and Montoursville in
the 2015 final.

LEBOEUF SNEAKS
PAST GM, 28-20
The
#7 Fort LeBoeuf Bison came to Edinboro on Wednesday evening
and went home with their third consecutive Region 4 title.
It was the first Region 4 loss for the Lancers. Last year,
LeBoeuf easily beat the banged up Lancers, 43-21, but this
year's match was a tight one that could have gone either
way.
The
match started at 114 lbs. Fort LeBoeuf built a 12-0 lead
after the first three bouts. Clay Kimmy finally got
McLane on the board when he squeezed out a 3-1 victory in
overtime against Jake Bennett at 133 lbs. LeBoeuf won four
of the next five bouts, by slim margins, to build their
lead to 24-9, but then Lancers tough upper weights rallied
to make it a contest. They won the next three bouts, two
of them by fall to pull within four points (24-21), with
one bout remaining. At 107 lbs., Dom Snyder made
it interesting when he took Gage Bell to his back during
a first period scramble. Unfortunately, Bell escaped and
went on to win the bout, clinching it for LeBoeuf.
Not
only was the final score close, so were most of the individual
matches. There were only three pins in the contest. Seven
of the remaining ten bouts were decided by 3 points or less
and two of those went into overtime.
Wednesday's
match was the 12th annual 'Takedown Cystic Fibrosis' night.
The event has raised nearly $150,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation over the past 12 years. The Lancers will
be back in action on Saturday at the Bison Duals
in Clearfield.
Notes:
The
Lancers lost a couple of close swing matches against LeBoeuf,
but there were also some bright spots. Ben Watkins
bumped up to 189 lbs. and decked a heavier Aaron Lichtinger.
Ryan Dedrick bumped up to 285 lbs. and upset 14th
ranked, John Duran, 9-2. Lukas Kuffer, Peter Sadchikov
and Derek Dube all wrestled very well, losing by
razor thin margins to some tough Bison opponents.
There's
a silver lining in the GM loss There is a very good chance
the Lancers could get another shot at Fort LeBoeuf in February
at the District 10 AA Team Duals. Barring an upset,
both teams could very well end up in the finals. Can the
Lancers turn the tables on the Bison and make the trip to
Hershey?
Magnus
Lloyd became the first GM wrestler to reach the 20
win mark this season. His record now stands at 20-3.
Lloyd also leads the team in nearfall points, major
decisions, technical falls and team points.
Chance Kimmy is on a roll when it comes to pins.
He has 17 wins this season, 13 of them are pins. There's
a good chance he could reach the much desired 20 pin mark
before the end of the season. Only 26 McLane wrestlers have
ever posted 20 or more falls in a single season.

FIVE LANCERS
PLACE AT MID WINTER MAYHEM
Five McLane wrestlers placed at this year's Mid Winter
Mayhem Tournament in Indiana, PA. Magnus Lloyd led
the charge with a 3rd place finish at 189 lbs. Clay Kimmy,
who came into the tournament as the #12 seed, wrestled
his way to a 5th place finish at 133 lbs. Ryan Dedrick
took 7th at 215. Chance Kimmy (152) and Derek Dube (160)
both placed 8th.
Magnus
Lloyd went 6-1 with 3 pins, 1 major decision and a
technical fall. The only blemish on his record was a loss
in the semifinal round to Bald Eagle's two time AA state
place winner, Caleb Close. Clay
Kimmy went 4-2 and had some big wins. He upset
both the #4 and #5 seeds to advance to the semifinals.
He dropped into the consolation semis after losing to
the #1 seed and last year's state runnerup, Brandt Harer
of Montgomery. He lost a tight, 8-4 decision in the consi
semis to the #5 seed, but bounced back with another win
over the #4 seed to close it out.
Ryan
Dedrick (seeded 8th) went 4-2 and rolled to a 7th
place finish. Dedrick posted two pins before losing to
#1 seed, 6th ranked (AAA), Juliano Marion of Franklin
Regional. Ryan made the medal rounds when he beat the
#10 seed in a close, 3-1 match. He then lost to the #4
seed, 10th ranked Josh Ryan of Mt Union in the consi quarterfinal
round. Dedrick claimed 7th place after a knock down-drag
out 5-3 sudden victory decision over 7th seed and 18th
ranked, Gavin Hannah of Brookville.
Chance
Kimmy (seeded 10th) went 5-3 on his way to an 8th
place medal. He won his first two bouts by fall
before losing to 7th seed, Devyn Fleeger of Cranberry.
Chance then registered three straight victories, including
a win by fall over the #8 seed in the blood round.
Derek Dube may have been the weekend's most pleasant
surprise. He entered the tournament unseeded and lost
his first match right out of the gate. Undaunted, he proceeded
to rattle off six straight wins to make the medal rounds.
Dube even gave 6th ranked, two time state qualifier, Jojo
Przbycien
of Fort LeBoeuf all he could handle in the 7th place match.
Peter
Sadchikov, Hudson Spires and Ben Watkins
all went 3-2. Hudson Spires just missed making the medal
rounds. He won his first three bouts to make the quarterfinals
before losing to state ranked (3rd), Devon Margo of Bishop
McCort. He was eliminated when he came out on the short
end of a heart breaking, 3-1 overtime decision against
#8, Rudy Gentile of Greenville. The Lancers placed
14th of 57 teams. That's a big improvement
over last year's 22nd place finish and just three place
winners.
The
Lancers will be back in action on Wednesday, January 17th
against #7 Fort LeBoeuf at home for Takedown Cystic
Fibrosis Night. The match will most likely determine
who will be the Region 4 champion.
News
and Notes:
Magnus
Lloyd became the 31st member of GM Wrestling's 100
Win Club with his win in the MWM quarterfinal round.
He added two more W's to make it 102. There's no doubt
that Magnus will add several more wins to that total before
the end of the season! Magnus also leads the team with
19 wins on the season! Chance Kimmy leads
the team with 12 pins!
Keep
an eye on Peter Sadchikov. He made the lineup and
scored his first varsity win against Harborcreek and then
won 3 matches (2 pins and a major) at Mid Winter Mayhem
and his 2 losses were close ones. Tip of the cap to Derek
Dube. It's tough to lose your first match at a tournament
and then wrestle the long road back. But he did just that
by stringing together six consecutive victories to secure
a spot on the podium! Clay Kimmy also wrestled
very well this weekend. You might even say he was on fire.
He came into the tournament with a modest 7-7 record and
was seeded 12th. He posted 3 straight wins, 2 of them
over the #5 and #4 seeds and then he beat the #4 seed
for a second time in the 5th place match!
Congratulations
to Ashley Campbell who made history this weekend.
Ashley became the first girl to win a PIAA tournament
for GM. She had 3 pins and a 5-1 decision in the finals
to claim the 106 lbs. title at the 2024 Mid-Winter
Mayhem Tournament!
Congrats
to the GM JV wrestlers. They placed 6th as a team
at Mid Winter Mayhem! Logan Hayes won the title
at 145 lbs. Landon Harnett nabbed the silver medal
at 139. Bernie Lourens placed 4th at 133 and Ethan
Simko was 4th at 145.

GM ROLLS OVER
HUSKIES
The
McLane wrestling team rolled over the Huskies on Wednesday
evening in Harborcreek by a score of 54-14 . With the win,
the Lancers improved their dual meet record to 4-1 overall
and 3-0 in Region 4. The Lancers actually trailed the Huskies,
14-12 after the 114 lbs. bout, but they won eight straight
to close out the dual.
Magnus
Lloyd, Ryan Dedrick, Ethan Snyder, Clay
Kimmy, Lukas Kuffer, Chance Kimmy, Hudson
Spires and Ben Watkins all had pins for the Lancers.
Josh Caro and Peter Sadchikov added decisions.
The
Lancers will be back in action this weekend at the very
tough, Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament at IUP. The team
placed 22nd of 48 teams last year. Magnus Lloyd placed
4th at 189, Hudson Spires was 7th at 145 and Jessi
Stempka took 5th at 172.
Notes:
Congrats
to sophomore, Peter Sadchikov on his first varsity
victory, a 10-4 decision at 145 lbs. Hudson Spires,
Magnus Lloyd and Ryan Dedrick lead the team
with 13 wins on the season. Ryan Dedrick leads the
team with 23 takedowns! Chance Kimmy and Hudson
Spires have recorded the most pins so far this season
with 9 each. With his pin last night, Hudson Spires
entered the GM record books with 45 career falls - he's
now one of the top 25 pinners in GM history. His brother,
Wilson Spires holds the record with 76 career pins.
Magnus Lloyd is quickly nearing the century mark
for career wins. He has 96 and could very well pass 100
this weekend in Indiana, PA.

LANCERS UPSET
#14 ST MARYS
The
McLane wrestling team, fresh off a strong showing at the
Trojan Wars in Chambersburg, knocked off 14th ranked St.
Marys last night at McComb Fieldhouse. It took a massive
comeback effort and some strategy but they got it done!
The Lancers were trailing the talented St. Marys team by
a 22-3 count after losing five of the first six bouts. The
match started at 114 lbs. and the Dutchmen ran off four
straight wins to take a 16-0 lead out of the gate. Lukas
Kuffer broke the St. Marys win streak when he eked out
a 7-5 decision at 139 lbs. to get the Lancers on the board.
The visitors increased their lead to 22-3 when they won
by fall at 145 lbs., but it was nearly all GM after that.
Chance
Kimmy started the rally at 152 lbs. when he locked up
a cradle and decked his opponent at the 3:50 mark. Hudson
Spires followed up with a first period pin of his own
at 160. St Marys briefly interrupted the rally when they
pulled out a decision at 172 lbs.
This
was the point where the strategy came in. Coach Cook took
a chance and sent out backup, Matt Caro at 189 lbs.
The move allowed Lloyd and Dedrick, both state ranked, to
each bump up a weight class and keep the rally going. Caro
came through in style with a first period pin! That got
the Lancers within four points. Magnus Lloyd put
the team ahead for the first time (27-25) when he decked
Johnathon Bandy in 2:44. Ryan Dedrick ran up a 12-2
lead over heavyweight, Bryson Tucker but wasn't satisfied.
With just 49 seconds remaining, Dedrick body locked Tucker,
took him to his back and decked him. That clinched it for
McLane!
