EIGHT
GM WRESTLERS PLACE AT FRED BELL
The
McLane wrestling team had a successful weekend at
the Fred Bell Tournament in Grove City. The Lancers took
3rd place in a 42 team field and put eight wrestlers
on the podium! Host Grove City was crowned tournament champs
this year, unseating General McLane who won the title last
year.
Hudson
Spires and Clay Kimmy both cruised into the Fred
Bell finals. Kimmy had four straight wins, including 1 fall
and 2 technical falls. Spires had three consecutive pins
and then scored a 16-0 technical fall to reach the 160 lbs.
finale. Hudson ran into West Mifflin's 19th ranked (AAA),
Cooper Deitz in the finals. Spires wasn't able to get anything
going against a very defensive wrestler in Deitz. Deitz
used a second period reversal and a third period takedown
to come out on top, 5-0. Clay Kimmy also ran into
a highly ranked wrestler in the finals - Grove City's Hudson
Hohman, who's a junior and already a two time state place
winner. Hohman, who's currently ranked 6th in the state,
did all of his scoring in the second stanza with an escape
and a takedown to grind out a 4-1 decision over Kimmy
Derek
Dube compiled a 4-2 record and finished 4th at 172 lbs.
Dube won his first three bouts, two by fall, to advance
to the semis. He lost to 6th ranked (AAA), and eventual
172 lbs. champ, Mario Hutcherson of Kiski Area in the semis.
Derek bounced back with a major decision victory over #3
seed, Reid Teagarden of McGuffey, before he was forced to
medical forfeit the 3rd place match. Matt Caro also
took 4th place at 189. He won his first three bouts before
losing to 4th ranked (AA), Braedon Welsh of Fort Cherry
in the semifinals. Welsh is a three time state qualifier
and two time state placer. Caro rebounded with an 8-3 decision
over Franklin's Drew Kockler in the consolation semi, but
then dropped an 11-4 verdict to Slayton William of South
Side Beaver in the 3rd place match.
Conner
Avery wrestled his way to 5th place at 285 lbs.
Conner won his first three bouts, all by fall, to
make the semifinals, before falling to Sharpsville's 23rd
ranked (AA), Brian White. Avery then lost a 3-2 squeaker
to #2 seed, Kaden Kisella of Franklin, but took 5th when
he reversed and decked Mercer's Kyle Suhrie in UTB.
Lucas Kuffer went 4-3 and took 6th place at 139 lbs.He
won his first two bouts before falling to two time state
place winner, Elijah Brosius of Cranberry. Lukas recovered
to win in the blood round and in the consi semis before
losing by major decision to 6th ranked (AA) - two time state
qualifier, Lucas Barr of McGuffey. Kuffer lost again in
the 5th place match to #3 seed, Dustin Kerr of Hampton.
Luke
Gray had a good tournament, going 4-3 and placing 8th.
He lost in the second round to 16th ranked (AAA), Bryce
Thomas of Moon and then rattled of three straight wins to
make the consolation quarterfinals. He lost in the consi
quarters and then lost to Bryce Thomas for a second time
in the 7th place match. Josh Caro had a breakout
weekend at Fred Bell also taking 8th place. He lost in the
first round to Landon Hassel of Sharpsville but then ran
off four wins in a row, including three pins. He fell a
second time to Hassel in the 7th place match.
At
152 lbs., Landon Harnett went 3-2 and came up just
short of placing when he suffered his second loss in the
blood round. Both of his losses were to Fred Bell placers.
Also bowing out in the blood round were Mason McDonald
(2-2), Ethan Snyder (2-2) and Logan Hayes
(3-2).
The
Lancers will be back at it on February 1st in Sharon for
a quarterfinals match against North East at the District
10 Team Duals. GM is the #4 seed and North East is #5.
The Lancers beat North East on January 15th, 41-25, but
it was a tough battle. This should be an exciting matchup!
Notes:
Hudson
Spires ran his career wins total to 110. That ties him
with former GM state place winner, Hudson Harrison
for 20th on the all time 100 wins list! Hudson also
ran off three straight pins to open the tournament, to bring
his career total to 72. That ties him with Caleb Baker
for 2nd place. He needs just four more falls to tie
his brother, Wilson Spires for the record!
Derek
Dube posted a pair of pins at Bell and now has 19 on
the season. He needs just one more to enter GM's 20 Pin
Club! Only 29 McLane wrestlers have made that list since
the program's inception! Clay Kimmy had four wins
this weekend and became the first GM wrestler to reach the
30+ win mark this season. Clay has 31 W's! Hudson Spires
is close behind with 28. Congrats to Luke Gray, Matt
Caro and Conner Avery. All three wrestlers won
4 times this weekend and reached 20+ wins for the season.
Congrats
to Dillon Beitz, Alex Fedchik, Jon Rolland
and Ethan Simko on their first varsity wins! Congrats
to Ashley Campbell and Ella Clark who took
1st and 2nd place at the Butler Girl's Tournament!

GM CRUSHES
GIRARD
The
McLane wrestling team closed out the regular dual meet season
with a big, 60-13 win over the Yellowjackets at home on
Senior Night! Matt Caro, Conner Avery, Ethan
Snyder, Lukas Kuffer, Hudson Spires and
Derek Dube all pinned their Girard opponents. Johnathon
Rolland, Luke Gray, Dom Snyder and Clay
Kimmy received forfeits.
The
Lancers finish the regular season with a 5-1 Region 4 record,
losing only to Cathedral Prep in the first dual of the season.
Overall the Lancers were 8-4 with all 4 losses coming at
the hands of state ranked teams (Cathedral Prep-8, Corry-14,
Clearfield-6 and Port Allegany-19).
Congratulations
and good luck to the General McLane senior wrestlers: Hudson
Spires, Ethan Simko, Ethan Snyder, Conner
Avery, Ashley Campbell. Coach Cook was
presented with a plaque by the boosters last night to mark
his 250th coaching win! With last night's victory,
he now has 253!
The
Lancers will be back in action this weekend at the Fred
Bell Tournament in Grove City. After this weekend it's
on to the post season with the District 10 Team Duals.
Notes:
Hudson
Spires secured his 69th career fall last night against
Girard. He needs 3 more to tie Caleb Baker for 2nd
place and 7 more to tie his brother, Wilson for the
top spot of 76.
Clay
Kimmy leads the team with 27 wins this season. Hudson
Spires has 24 and Derek Dube 22. Dube leads the
team with 17 falls.

LANCERS 4TH-
COOK HITS #250
AT BISON DUALS
Coach
Cook headed to Clearfield with 249 head coaching wins
to his credit. He and the GM wrestling team made sure he
didn't have to wait long for number 250. They pulled off
a 38-31 come from behind victory over a tough, Cranberry
team in their first match at the 2025 Bison Duals. They
followed that with two more wins over Brockway and Butler.
That put the team in the semifinals where they fell to #6
Clearfield, 41-22. The Lancers closed out the tourney by
losing a 39-32 squeaker to #19 Port Allegany and settling
for 4th place.
Clay
Kimmy and Derek Dube were perfect, each going 5-0. Of those
5 wins, Dube had 4 pins! Luke Gray, Hudson Spires and Matt
Caro all went 4-1. Gray had one fall, one tech fall and
a major decision. Spires posted 3 falls and a major decision
- while Caro had a pair of pins and a major. Mason McDonald,
Ethan Snyder and Conner Avery all went 3-2. Avery had 3
pins - McDonald and Snyder each had a pair of falls!
The
team is now 7-4 overall and 4-1 in Region 4 with one region
match to go. They'll face Girard on Senior Night at GM on
Wednesday, January 22nd. The Fred Bell Invitational will
follow this coming weekend and then it's on to some post-season
action!
Notes:
Coach
Cook not only won his 250th match in Clearfield, he
hit number 200 at the same tournament exactly five years
ago! And in January of 2013, Cook reached 100 wins with
a 57-13 victory over host, Clearfield. Steve Samol
retired in 1975 with 100 wins after 10 years at the helm.
Tim Mulholland retired in 2004 with 137.
The
McLane wrestling team jumped to #17 in the state rankings
after their upset over North East earlier in the week. Freshman,
Mason McDonald made his debut in the state rankings
at #20 at 127 lbs. I'm sure he will be in those rankinngs
frequently for the next 3 1/2 years.
Clay
Kimmy is screaming towards GM's 100 win club. With his
5 W's at the Bison Duals he is now at 91. If he makes it
before the end of this season he will be just the second
wrestler in GM history to make it 100 before his senior
year. Matt Leehan hit 100 as a junior in the 2020
section finals.
Conner
Avery's first win by fall against Cranberry was a big
one. The Lancers were only leading by a point, 32-31, when
Avery pinned his opponent at 3:14. Three GM wrestlers surpased
20 wins at the Bison Duals. Clay Kimmy leads
the team with 26. Hudson Spires has 23 and Derek
Dube 21. Spires ran his career win total to 105. That
moves him up to #23 on the all time Lancer wins list. He
should make the top 10 before season's end! Hudson now has
68 career pins - only Caleb Baker (72) and brother,
Wilson Spires (76) stand in his way of the top spot!

LANCERS UPSET
#21 NORTH EAST
Coming
off an 8th place finish Mid Winter Mayhem, the GM wrestling
team kept the train rolling Wednesday by upsetting North
East at home! The Grapepickers came into the match ranked
21st with an 10-1 record. The Pickers were short three wrestlers
but they still gave the Lancers a battle that came down
to the last few bouts!
Zach
Greco picked up a forfeit for the Lancers at 107 but
North East came back to win four of the next five bouts,
including two pins and a major. That put GM in the hole,
19-12. Clay Kimmy got GM back in the match with a
hard fought, 18-12 decision at 145 lbs. Clay held a commanding,
11-4 lead over Ethen Ringer late in the second period, but
things got exciting. Kimmy got caught in a scramble, ended
up on his back and Ringer took a surprising, 12-11 lead.
But then Ringer chose bottom position in the third period
and Kimmy turned him twice to seal his victory. Landon
Harnett took an early 6-0 lead in his match at 152 lbs.
and held on to win, 6-4. North East still held a one point
lead (19-18), but Hudson Spires and Derek Dube would put
the match away!
Hudson
Spires dominated his opponent, running up five takedowns
and four near fall points to cruise to a 20-3 technical
fall at 4:58. That gave the home team a 23-19 edge. At 172,
Derek Dube was in command on his feet and secured
three solid takedowns to take a 9-3 lead after two periods.
In the third period, Dube hit his final takedown, took his
opponent straight to his back and got the fall. That clinched
it as GM led, 35-19. Conner Avery put the final nail
in the coffin with his pin over Avery Kunzler at 3:18 of
their match.
The
Lancers now stand at 4-1 in Region 4 and 4-2 overall.
They will be back in action this Saturday at the Bison Duals
in Clearfield.
Notes:
Derke
Dube took the team lead in falls with his 12th of the
year. Of Derek's 16 wins this year 12 are pins and 3 are
major decisions...talk bout bonus points! Hudson Spires
has 19 wins and 11 pins on the season. Clay Kimmy leads
the team with 21 wins so far.
Wednesday
night's victory over North East is Ryan Cook's 249th
head coaching win!!! Number 250 will come at this weekend's
Bison Duals.

KIMMY AND
SPIRES PLACE
AT MID WINTER MAYHEM
Clay
Kimmy and Hudson Spires both placed in the top
five at the always tough, Mid Winter Mayhem Tournament in
Indiana, PA. this past weekend. Kimmy (4th) went
6-2 with 2 pins, a technical fall and a major decision.
He won his first three bouts easily to make the quarterfinal
round where he suffered his first loss to #1 nationally
ranked, Bo Bassett of Bishop McCort. Bassett won the
matchup by technical fall, but Kimmy actually led, 4-3 early
on. Clay rebounded to win three in a row to make the consi
finals, including victories over the #10, #5 and #2 seeds.
He finally lost for a second time to #4 seed (ranked 13th-AAA),
Kase Chopp of Butler by a 4-2 count.
Spires
(5th) went 5-2 with 3 pins and a technical fall to his credit.
Hudson won his first four bouts to make the semifinal round
before falling to #2 seed, Luke Sipes of Altoona. Sipes
is a 3 time state placer and currently ranked #2 (AAA) in
the state. He dropped a major decision in the consolation
semis but bounced back and pinned 14th ranked (AAA), Jesse
Scott from Emmaus in the 5th place match. That one was
the 100th win of Hudson's career!
285
pounder, Conner Avery wrestled a great tournament
despite not placing. He entered the tourney unseeded and
lost his first bout to 2nd ranked (AA) and two time state
placer, Rowan Holmes of Somerset. Undaunted, Conner proceeded
to rack up 4 straight victories, including 3 pins and a
major decision. He advanced all the way to the blood round
by knocking off the #17, #11 and #14 seeds. In the do or
die blood round, Avery narrowly lost a 4-3 decision to state
ranked (7th-AAA) West Allegheny's Cameron Danna. Luke
Gray started off with two wins, one a technical fall
and a major decision, but unfortunately had to drop out
of the tournament due to illness.
Derek
Dube also just missed making the medal rounds at 172
pounds. He won his first 3 bouts, all by fall to make the
quarterfinal round. In the quarterfinals Dube fell to state
placer (3rd) and #2 ranked (AAA), Bode Marlow of Thomas
Jefferson. Derek looked like he was on his way to a spot
on the podium when he ran up a 6-0 lead over Untied's Dylan
Stephens in the blood round. Unfortunately, Dube got caught
and thrown to his back in the final seconds and dropped
a 7-6 decision that ended the tournament for him. The Lancers
finished 8th in a massive 57 team field. All 12 GM wrestlers
won at least one bout to help the cause. Mason McDonald,
Lukas Kuffer, Landon Harnett, Luke Gray
and Matt Caro all won twice. Dom Snyder, Ethan
Snyder and Logan Hayes had one victory each.
The
team will be back in action against North East at home on
Wednesday for Hall of Fame Night.
Notes:
Congrats
to Hudson Spires for reaching the 100 career wins
mark! Hudson is 18-5 on the season with 11 pins to his credit.
He has accumulated 65 pins in his career and is now
in 5th place all time. Only Travis Bryant (66), Hayden
Harrison (67), Caleb Baker (72) and his brother,
Wilson Spires (76), stand between Hudson and the
top spot. Keep em coming!!!
Clay
Kimmy became GM's first 20 match winner this season.
His record now stands at 20-6 with 7 pins. He also has 85
career wins. In addition, Clay has 128 career escapes, which
puts him in 4th place all time. Only Zac Baumgartner
(131), Travis Goss (137) and Chris Laird (156)
have more esccapes. Kimmy has a good chance of breaking
that record.
A
tip of the cap to our heavyweight, Conner Avery.
Avery has been working hard and has been steadily improving.
He entered this weekend's tournament unseeded, but turned
some heads. He won four straight matches, beating the #17,
#11 and #14 seeds to make it to the blood round. He just
narrowly lost his final bout by a single point to a state
ranked wrestler. WTG, Conner!
It
was a successful weekend for General McLane wrestling all
the way around. The varsity wrestlers placed 8th,
the JV wrestlers took 2nd and the GM girls
finished 9th. JV place winners were: Jon Rolland
(1st), Dillon Beitz (3rd), Bernie Lourens
(4th) and Ethan Simko (4th). For the girls: Ella
Clark (2nd), Ashley Campbell (2nd) and Whisper
Abercrombie (3rd).

LANCERS STUN
FORT LEBOEUF
The
McLane wrestling team pulled off a big, 31-29 win
over Fort Leboeuf on Wednesday night in Bison territory!
The match was streamed live on D10 Wrestling's Facebook
page and was as exciting as they come. The teams traded
leads several times in the contest and the outcome was undecided
until the last bout.
Coach
Ryan Cook made a strategic move right out of the gate
that set the tempo for Wednesday's match. The match started
at 215 lbs. and Coach Cook bumped 189 pounder, Matt Caro
up to take on Dan Duran, who was coming off a 215 lbs. Tool
City title. Caro dominated Duran, scoring 3 takedowns and
an escape to cruise to a 10-1 major decision. The Bison
bounced back to take a 6-4 lead with a pin at heavyweight.
Luke
Gray surprised a some local forecasters by upsetting
a state ranked opponent at 107 lbs. Gray rolled over Carter
Friday and gave the Lancers 5 team points with a masterful
17-1 technical fall. The Bison got right back in it by winning
the next two bouts at 114 and 121 lbs. At that point, LeBoeuf
held a 17-9 lead. But the Lancers had more surprises in
store. At 127, Lancer Freshman, Mason McDonald
ran up a 7-0 lead and then held on for a 7-4 decision over
two time regional qualifier, Brady Bowers. That made the
score 17-12. The 133 lbs. bout was probably the wildest
tussle of the evening. LeBoeuf's Brody Myers, ranked 22nd
in the state ran up an 11-4 lead over Ethan Snyder,
but Snyder came screaming back and actually took a 19-18
lead late in the 3rd period before finally dropping a heart
pounding 24-19 decision. The Bison held a 20-12 lead at
that point.
At
139, Lukas Kuffer pulled off another upset over LeBoeuf's
Haidan McNamara. McNamara, who came into the bout with a
stellar 12-3 record was completely out wrestled by Kuffer,
who used 3 takedowns, 2 escapes and a penalty point to post
a 12-3 major decision. Fort LeBoeuf still led, 20-16, but
they hadn't seen two of GM's top wrestlers yet. 145 pounder,
Clay Kimmy made short work of his opponent and posted
a 20-3 technical fall at the 1:50 mark. That put GM back
in front, 21-20. Xavier Dombkowski got the lead right back
for the Bison (25-21) with a technical fall at 152.
At
160, Hudson Spires got the Lancers their only pin
of the night and some big bonus points when he decked talented
freshman, Easton Glass (12-1 record) in 3:45. That put GM
back on top, 27-25 with just two bouts to go. The outcome
was now in the hands of McLane junior, Derek Dube.
Derek got off to a slow start as Bison senior, Brody Beers
(11-4 record) got the first takedown and took a 3-0 lead.
But Dube escaped, took Beers down and turned him twice before
the end of the period to take an 8-3 lead. He stayed in
control and cruised to a 19-9 major decision to give the
Lancers a 31-25 lead. The best Fort LeBoeuf could hope for
now was a tie and hope criteria was on their side. LeBoeuf's
Aiden Strutchen did win the last bout by major decision,
but it was not enough. Final score: GM-31 / FLB-29!
The
GM crew will be back in action this weekend at the Mid
Winter Mayhem Tournament at IUP. The Lancers placed
14th in the massive 57 team field last year. Five GM
wrestlers placed including Clay Kimmy and Derek Dube.
Notes:
Hudson
Spires racked up his 95th career win at Fort
LeBoeuf last night. He could possibly reach 100 by this
weekend. Spires also got his 62nd career fall. That moves
him into a tie for 7th place all time with former GM wrestler,
three time district champ and one time regional champ, Shawn
Trapp. Spires needs 14 more falls to break the record.
It's a tall order, but if anyone can pull it off, Spires
can!
Clay
Kimmy also has a shot at reaching 100 career wins before
the end of his junior year. His win against Fort LeBoeuf
was #79!
A
tip of the cap to Luke Gray, who's shown amazing
improvement over the past year! Luke went from posting a
6-19 record last year to a 10-4 record and some big wins
so far this season.
Congratulations
to the coaches and the entire team for bouncing back
from that heart breaking 1 point loss to Corry last week.
You all showed a lot of heart and determination last night!

GM COMES UP
JUST SHORT
The
General McLane wrestling team nearly pulled off a
big upset over the 9th ranked, Corry Beavers on Thursday
at home on TDCF Night. In fact, the Lancers won 7 of the
13 weight classes, but the difference was bonus points.
Of their 6 wins in the contest, the Beavers came up with
4 pins. As disappointing as the loss was, there were some
great performances by several McLane wrestlers.
Hudson
Spires was trailing Corry's Lamech Albers, 1-0 in the
3rd period with just 1:09 remaining. Hudson attempted a
double leg takedown, his opponent sprawled and when Spires
came out and up, he hit a headlock that caught Albers off
guard. Spires took him to his back and the pin came at 5:15.
Matt Caro wrestled smartly in a defensive battle
and pulled off a 2-1 victory that gave GM a 9-6 lead in
the team score. After back to back Corry wins the Lancers
found themselves trailing, 18-9.
Luke
Gray and Dom Snyder both had big wins, Gray with
a 14-0 major decision and Snyder with a 3rd period fall.
That put GM back in front, 19-18. Corry's Owen Anderson
put the Beavers back on top, 24-19 with a fall at 121 lbs.
Freshman, Mason McDonald won a hard fought, 1-0 decision
over former state qualifier, Steven Willis at 127 to pull
GM to within 2 points (22-24). At 133, Carson Braswell got
Corry's fourth fall of the night with just 3 seconds left
in that bout. That made it 30-22 in favor of the Beavers.
Lukas Kuffer brought the Lancers to within striking
distance with an 11-9 decision at 139 lbs. With the score
30-25, Clay Kimmy needed at least a technical fall to make
the upset happen. He gave it his best shot but had to settle
for a 13-5 major decision. Final score: Corry 30/GM 29.
The
Lancers record is now 2-2. They will be back in action in
Waterford against the state ranked Fort LeBoeuf Bison on
Wednesday, January 8th.
Notes:
Keep
an eye on Hudson Spires. He posted his 7th pin of
the season against Corry and moved into the top 10 for Career
Falls. Spires now has 61 career falls. That ties him
for 8th place with Owen Watkins and Matt Leehan.
The record is 76, which was set in 2023 by his brother,
Wilson Spires.
