Lancers
Finish 2nd at District 10 Tournament
For
the second year in a row, the Lancer matmen finished
second at the District 10 Tournament. 171/2 points
seperated them from the top spot with Cathedral
Prep. Five McLane wrestlers will move on to the
NW Regional Tournament in Altoona. Branden Stearns,
Donald Osinski and Hadley Harrison all
claimed District 10 titles. Eric Zelina placed
second and Ashton Osterberg was third. Sophomore,
Glen Sult and junior, Brian Clark took fourths,
one short of moving on.
Donald
Osinski dominated the 130 lbs. weight class.
He scored falls over Prep's Paul Squelia in the
quarter finals and McDowell's Travis Booth in the
semis. Donald met Oil City's Jacob Spuck in what
was expected to be a close bout. But Osinski controlled
the match, scoring a pair of takedowns and an escape
while riding out the oiler for an entire period.
Hadley
Harrison also cruised through his weight class.
He posted a 17-1 technical fall over Corry's Brandon
Eck in the quarters, then pinned Conneaut Lake's
talented freshman, Cash Horne in the semis. Hadley
topped Warren's Alex Lauffenburger, 7-3 in the finals.
Branden
Stearns pinned Oil City's Brian Shontz in the
quarter final round and followed with a 6-0 whitewashing
of Corry's Ryan Smith. Stearns had his hands full
with Franklin's Andrew Riddle in the finals. Branden
was clinging to a 7-6 lead in the 3rd period when
he escaped and took Riddle down in the final seconds
for a 12-8 win and his second District 10 title.
Eric
Zelina squeaked past Meadville's Joe Amato 9-7
in overtime and then beat Conneaut Lake's Clint
Copelad 9-5 in the semis. Zelina met Prep's Brad
Crolli in the finals and scored the first takedown.
But Crolli hit a peterson, switched off to a head
& arm and decked the Lancer in :51.
Ashton
Osterberg won by tech fall over Conneaut Lake's
Tyler Thomas in the opening round. He dropped a
6-4 heart breaker to Franklin's Bobby Steetle in
the semis. Ashton scored another tech fall over
Corry's JC Hammond and then secured 3rd place and
a trip to Altoona with an 11-3 major decision over
Warren's Eric Gustafson.
News
and Notes from the D10 Tourney:
Don
Osinski scored his 18th and 19th falls of the
year in the tournament and ran his record to a team
best, 33-1. Branden Stearns leads the team
with 34 wins.
Ashton
Osterberg tied a school record for 3 point near
falls over the weekend. He has 31. That ties him
with Hudson Harrison. Ashton should break the record
at Regionals this weekend.
Senior
co-catain, Travis Goss wrestled his last
varsity match on Saturday in the consolation semi
finals. It was a disappointing tournament for Travis
who went 1-2 and failed to place for the first time
this season. He placed 3rd at Districts and 4th
at Regionals last year. Travis racked up 80 career
wins and set new school records for "Season
Escapes" (55) and "Career Escapes (137)".
He also posted a winning record all 4 years, despite
wrestling up one to two weight classes. Congratulations
on a great wrestling career, Travis.

McLane
Wrestlers Pull Off A Big
Season Ending Upset Over the State Ranked Bisons
The
G.M. wrestlers concluded their dual meet season
Monday evening with a big win over former ECL rival
Ft. LeBoeuf. The Lancers, who suffered a trio of
one point losses earlier in the season, had their
act together against Ft. LeBoeuf.
The
match started at 145 where the Bisons took a 4-0
lead. At 152, Louie Decker posted a solid 6-2 decision
over Wes Stull. Stull had beaten Decker 10-4 at
the McDowell Tournament in December. Clay Steadman
followed with a pin over Justin Mitchell and gave
McLane a lead they would never relinquish. At 171,
Branden Stearns won a hard fought 9-4 decision over
Denton Sauers. That bout had some anxious moments
when Sauers caught Stearns and had him on his back
briefly. Sauers was the first wrestler to score
back points on Branden this season.
Travis
Goss used a pair of takedowns at 189 to beat a state
ranked Jeremiah Landis, 4-3. That gave McLane a
15-4 lead. The Bisons tightened it up with wins
at 215 and 275, but Cyrus Parlin's 12-0 major decicion
at 103 stretched the G.M. lead to 19-10. LeBouef
forfeited at 112 making the score 25-10. Kory Hiner
and Jason Alexander got wins with bonus points in
the next two bouts and pulled the Bisons to within
4 points. But the Lancers shut them down after that.
At
130 lbs. Don Osinski and Jeff O'Connell were locked
in a 0-0 battle in the second period. O'Connell
had legs in and was riding tight, when Osinski went
into a tripod and grabbed O'Connell's head. Donald
pulled his opponent underneath and got the fall
at the 3:02 mark. That sealed the win for the Lancers.
Hadley Harrison used a pair of takedowns and a reversal
to beat R.J. Smith 6-3 at 135 pounds. In the evening's
finale, Brandon Saraceno wrestled what might have
been his best match of the year. He used a second
period reversal to beat state ranked, Nick Kaiser,
2-0. Final score, GM-37 Ft. LeBoeuf-21.
News
and Notes:
Donald
Osinski earned his 30th win of the season
tonight and he leads the team in falls with 17.
Branden Stearns win was his 31st of the
season and the 105th of his career. That
puts him in 5th place on the all time G.M. wins
list. Travis Goss holds the distinction of
going 4-0 against Fort LeBoeuf in dual meets
in his 4 year career.
Three
McLane wrestlers defeated state ranked Bison opponents.
Brandon Saraceno won a 2-0 decision over
#18 Nick Kaiser, Travis Goss nipped #25 Jeremiah
Landis 4-3 and Don Osinski pinned #25 Jeff
O'Connell. Ben Rucker lost 12-8 but wrestled
a great match against #20 ranked Adam Farrell.
A
big 'Thumbs Up' to the Fort LeBoeuf coaches
and parents for including our Senior wrestlers in
their Senior Night Ceremonies.

Drop Another One Pointer to Saegertown
For
the third time this season the McLane Wrestlers
came up just one point short of victory. General
McLane and Saegertown met at McComb Fieldhouse on
Friday evening as a preliminary to the Scots &
Cleveland State dual. Mike Sloat pinned a stubborn
Tim Tedesco in the final bout to give Saegertown
a 35-34 come from behind win. Tedesco, in his first
varsity bout weathered a continuous onslaght from
the Saegertown veteran and made it into the 3rd
period before giving up the fall.
The
match started at 152 and GM took the lead when Louie
Decker pinned Scott Stearns. Stearns had a pair
of takedowns and a 4-1 lead when the always dangerous
Decker hit Stearns with peterson and switched off
to a headlock. Louie decked him at the 2:35 mark.
Saegertown won four of the next five weight classes
to take a 23-9 lead.
Ashton
Osterberg pulled his team to within nine points
with a tech fall at 112, but the Panthers answered
with a pin at 119. The wrecking crew of Eric Zelina,
Don Osinski, Brandon Saraceno and Hadley Harrison
strung four wins together for the Lancers and put
them on top 34-29. But the five point lead wasn't
enough.
The
McLane Wrestlers take to the mat for the last
time this season as a team at Fort LeBoeuf on
Monday. It will be Fort LeBoeuf's Senior
Night and the always classy Bisons have chosen
to honor our seniors as part of the evening's
festivities.

Wrestlers Pound Conneaut Lake on Senior Night
The
McLane wrestlers made Senior Night and their last
home match of the year something to remember. They
pounded AAA rival Conneaut Lake, 59-12 Thurday at
General McLane. The Lancers had 6 pins and won 12
of 14 weight classes to completely dominate the
Lakers. Cyrus Parlin started the ball rolling with
a quick takedown and 38 second pin of Cody Shafer.
At 112, Ashton Osterberg ran up an 11-0 first period
lead with a takedown and a couple of bar arm combos
before he finished off Tyler Thomas with a 16-0
tech fall.
Eric
Zelina had a tough time and a few wild scrambles
with Clint Copeland, but turned the tables in the
2nd period and stuck the Laker at the 3:43 mark.
That put G.M. on top, 17-6. At 130, Don Osinski
ran his record to 28-1 with a 3:48 fall over Lucas
Morian. Donald dominated the his opponent from the
opening buzzer. Hadley Harrison won a 5-3 decision
over talented Lake freshman, Cash Horne. The bout
wasn't really as close as the score would indicate.
Hadley nearly had Horne on his back four times.
At
140, Brandon Saraceno found himself behind 7-3 to
Dan Tursky after one period, but cut the lead to
7-5 after two. He escaped in the third and his opponent
was called for locking hands. That tied it at 7.
Saraceno scored a late takedown during a wild scramble
and pulled out a 9-7 win. After a loss at 145, Louie
Decker got the Lancers back on the board with a
great performance at 152. Decker looked very confident
coming off his runnerup finish at last Saturday's
Salamanca Tournament and ran up a 13-0 lead before
pinning Kevin McClimans with 27 seconds remaining.
Clay Steadman received a forfeit at 160. That made
it GM-41, Lake-12.
Then
came the most exciting bout of the evening. Branden
Stearns faced off against Kory Hubbard. The two
battled evenly through most of the first period
when a scramble ensued. The official signaled a
takedown for Hubbard at mat's edge late in the first.
But waived it off as Stearns scrambled back out
front before control was completely established.
Hubbard chose down in the second and escaped about
a minute and a half later for a 1-0 lead. Branden
nailed Hubbard on a single leg takedown with 8 second
left in the period to go up 2-1. He scored the final
point of the bout with an escape 1:57 into the final
period.
Travis
Goss scored a takedown 8 seconds into the 189 pound
bout to take a 2-0 lead over Ryan Courtney. Courtney
escaped in the second period to make it 2-1. Goss
used a snap down and spin behind to widen his lead
to 4-1. Travis got his 50th escape of the year to
go up 5-1 in period 3. Courtney attempted a desperation
lateral drop, but Travis caught the Laker for another
two and that made the final score 7-1. At 215, Ben
Rucker held a slim 2-1 lead going into the second
period. He scored on Jordan Heberle with a takedown
and held a 4-2 lead after giving up an escape. Heberle
attempted a sitout in the final period when Rucker
dropped him to his back and got the pin.
Joel
Stearns finished off the evening with a picture
perfect lateral drop of Dave Ketchum and got G.M.'s
6th fall of the evening. Final score, McLane-59
Conneaut Lake-12. The McLane Matmen will be back
in action tomorrow evening against Crawford County
powerhouse, Saegertown.

McLane
Crowns 4 Champs-Wins Salamanca Invitational
After
suffering a tough one point loss last week in the
District 10 Duals. General McLane wrestlers rebounded
Saturday with a dominating performance at the Salamanca
Invitational Tournament in Salamanca, N.Y. The Lancers
were crowned tournament Champions with 279.5 points,
easliy outpointing second place Fredonia which finished
with 181. McLane had 4 Champs crowned and managed
to place all 15 wrestlers in the event. New York's
96 lbs. weight class allowed the Lancers to put
an extra wrestler on the mat at the tournament.
Ashton
Osterberg, Donald Osinski, Hadley Harrison and Branden
Stearns all won titles. Seventh seeded, Louie Decker
also made the finals but dropped an 8-3 decision
to the top seed, Olean's Steve Pancio.
Ashton
Osterberg had a pair of pins to make the finals
and then pulled out a 2-0 squeaker over Maryvale's
Curtis Voak. Don Osinski had a fall in the quarter-finals,
a 15-0 tech fall in the semis and then decked Bradford's
Tim Keane in the finals. Hadley Harrison posted
2 falls, a 12-0 major decison and pinned Cattaraugus
Lake Valley's Josh Bryant in 2:51, in the finals.
Branden
Stearns pinned his first two opponents, before winning
the 171 lbs. title over Canisteo's Devan Bertch
in the finals. Branden's final win may have been
the most impressive. Bertch had just won the 190th
bout of his career in the tournament. Stearns and
Bertch battled evenly for most of the first period
when Branden hit a perfect Jap Whizzer and spun
behind for the first takedown. He dominated Bertch
from that point, scoring another pair of takedowns
and riding Bertch for much of the last two periods.
103
pounder, Cyrus Parlin took third for the Lancers,
going 3-1. Parlin's only loss was to eventual tourney
Champ, Matt Metzler. Taking 4th were Keith Scharrer,
Eric Zelina, Brandon Saraceno, Clay Steadman, Travis
Goss and Joel Stearns. Fifth placers were Brian
Clark and Shawn McFadden. Glen Sult was 6th.
News
& Notes: Congratulations to Branden
Stearns. He posted his 100th Career Win
in his first bout at the Salamanca Tournament. Branden
accomplished the feat despite missing a portion
of his sophomore and junior seasons with football
related injuries.
Don
Osinski still leads the team in falls
with 15. He's also second for season wins with 27.
Branden Stearns has 28.
Eric
Zelina, Brandon Saraceno, Clay Steadman
and Travis Goss all went 4-1 at Salamanca.
Unfortunately none of the four were able to wrestle
for 3rd place because of the "Five bout rule".
They were all awarded 4th on tournament criteria.
Travis Goss' only loss was to New York state
champion, Kane Smith of Salamanca in the quarter-finals.
Travis nearly went the distance with Smith, giving
up a 21-6 technical fall with only 1 second remaining
in the bout. Travis also broke Hudson Harrison's
single season record for escapes at the Salamanca
Tourney.
Clay
Steadman and Eric Zelina led the team
with 4 falls each on the day. The Lancer wrestling
team should be particularly proud of the fact
that of the 17 teams in the tournament, they were
awarded the "Sportmanship Award".
They received a plaque for the honor.
