Eight
GM Wrestlers Advance to Regionals
For
the first time since 1996-97, the McLane wrestling
team failed to crown a District 10 champ. But eight
McLane wrestlers will advance to the NW Regional AAA
Tournament in Altoona, which will be held on March
3rd and 4th.
Joe
Wheeling, Zac Baumgartner, DJ Myers
and Caleb Baker all made the finals, but came
up one win short. Joe Wheeling pinned Warren's
Nate Park in the opening round and then decisioned
McDowell's Coleman Cousins to advance to the finals.
That was a big win for Wheeling. Cousins had beaten
him, 8-3 in the finals of the Fred Bell Tournament
just last month. Wheeling lost to Prep's Jake Gromacki
in the finals.
Zac
Baumgartner posted a fall over Central Tech's
Tony Mollinarro and a 12-2 major over Prep's Justin
Wasmund before falling to McDowell's Cody Nolan. DJ
Myers pinned Strong Vincent's Jeremy Perry in
the quarterfinals and then ground out a 6-4 decision
over McDowell's Ryan Kenski in the semis. Myers lost
in the finals to Prep's state ranked (9th), Tyler
Parsons.
Caleb
Baker pinned Titusville's Van Stefaniszyn in the
quarters and decisioned Prep's Logan Thompson in the
semifinals. Caleb lost a heart breaking, 3-1 overtime
decision to Corry's Alec Gluvna in the finals.
The
disappointing showing in the finals was offset somewhat
by a great showing in the consolation finals where
McLane wrestlers won 4 out of 5. Deane Twitchell,
Tim Wheeling, Bryan Campbell and Travis
Bryant all wrestled back to claim 3rd's and advance
to Regionals. Nate Ferrick claimed 4th place.
Notes
from the D10 AAA Tournament:
Deane
Twitchell wrestled very well this weekend, winning
3 of 4 bouts and placing 3rd. Deane's only loss was
to eventual champion, Paul Deitz of McDowell in the
semis.
Bryan
Campbell lost his first round match to Central
Tech's Santos Guerra, but then proceeded to pin his
next three opponents and take home the bronze. Nice
job Bryan!
Tim
Wheeling was, without a doubt in the tournament's
toughest weight class and still managed to place 3rd.
After dropping a 1 point decision to McDowell's Shawn
Spearman in the semifinal round, Tim bounced back
with a tech fall and a 5-2 decision in the consy finals
over Warren's state ranked (12th), Amani Bosko. This
will be Wheeling's 3rd consecutive trip to Altoona.
Travis
Bryant lost to McDowell's Mike Weissinger in the
semis but bounced back with a pair of pins to take
3rd. Bryant now has 62 career pins (4th best all-time).
He also has 24 pins on the season (6th best).
Caleb
Baker lost a heart breaker in the finals to state
ranked Alec Gluvna of Corry in the finals. But Caleb
will move on to regionals and may get another shot
at the Corry big man. Baker now has 115 career wins
and needs just one more to tie Tommy Kirdahy for the
number 4 spot. He also added a pin to his career falls
record and now has 69.
Best
of luck to our senior wrestlers who have wrestled
their last matches as Lancers,
Kyle Kuntz, Paul Scharrer, Jared
Hurta, Andy Stafford and Kenny Mayhue!

GM Beats
McDowell, 51-18
The
Lancers won their final dual meet on Tuesday over
a McDowell backup squad. The McDowell coaching staff
understandably made the decision to rest their starters
for the upcoming State Team Duals, which begin on
Thursday. The Trojans won the District 10 Team Duals
title last week by beating Corry and Cathedral Prep.
With
the win, McLane ran their overall dual record to 11-4
and Region 4 record to 8-1. The win over McDowell
created the very real possibility that this year's
Region 4 title could be shared by General McLane,
Cathedral Prep and McDowell. McDowell and Prep will
meet later in their Region dual meet. A McDowell win
would leave all three teams with an 8-1 Region 4 record.
Prep owns a win over the Lancers and since McLane
beat McDowell, a McDowell win over Prep would create
a deadlock.
McDowell's
backup squad was actually quite impressive and possibly
even talented enough to beat 3/4 of the varsity teams
in the Region. The Trojans took a 12-0 lead with falls
from Dave Rinderle and Devon Bogart. The Lancers replied
with six straight wins. Parker McDermott, Chris
Laird, Alex Thayer, Travis Bryant,
Caleb Baker and Joe Wheeling all had
pins for the Lancers.
DJ
Myers added an 18-3 technical fall over Cameron
Waters at 145 lbs. Zac Baumgartner posted a
3-1 decision over a very game, Kenny Rogers at 140
and Tyler Hendricks beat Chad Vankoot, 8-1
at 152. Deane Twitchell recorded a lopsided,
12-0 major decision at 112.
The
McLane wrestlers will begin their post season quest
on February 18th and 19th at the District 10 AAA Tournament,
which will be held at Central Tech.
News
and Notes:
Caleb
Baker broke Hayden Harrison's record for
Career Falls when he decked Scott Augustine for his
68th. Baker also tied Eric Zelina for 5th place
on the Career Wins list with his 113th and became
just the second McLane wrestler to rack up 33+ wins
in three consecutive seasons. Donald Osinski
was the only other GM wrestler to accomplish that
feat. In addition, Caleb became the first Mclane wrestler
to post 20 or more falls three times. Congrats!
Travis
Bryant posted his 22nd fall of the year and the
60th of his career on Tuesday. That ties Bryant with
Luke and Hadley Harrison for 5th place
on the all time list.
DJ
Myers has really hit his stride this season. He
became the second Lancer wrestler to reach 30 wins
for the season against just five losses. Myers has
80 career wins to his credit and still has another
year of wrestling. DJ also leads the team in major
decisions with nine.
Three
other McLane wrestlers are close to the 30 win mark.
Joe Wheeling has 29, Travis Bryant 26
and Zac Baumgartner 27. Parker McDermott,
Nate Ferrick and Tyler Hendricks have
all surpassed 20 wins.

McLane
Wrestlers Stomp Bulldogs On Senior Night
It
began with a festive atmosphere at General McLane
High School on Thursday as coaches, fans and parents
gathered at to honor the senior wrestlers and watch
them perform on home turf one last time. It ended
as a nearly perfect evening. The Lancers won 12 of
14 individual bouts and stomped the Meadville Bulldogs,
56-12 for their 10th dual win of the season.
The
match started at 130 lbs. where senior, Jared Hurta
received a forfeit. Parker McDermott rolled
to a 10-5 win over Brad Carlini, Zac Baumgartner
put on another dominating performance with a 19-3
technical fall at 140 lbs. DJ Myers won his
29th of the year via forfeit and Tyler Hendricks
won by fall in 5:39 to spot the Lancers a 26-0 lead
out of the gate.
Meadville's
state ranked (7th), Zack Towers got the Bulldogs on
the board with a pin at 160, but McLane went on a
five bout binge after that. Bryan Campbell posted
a 9-5 decision at 171, Andy Stafford followed
with a fall over Alex Williams at 189, then Travis
Bryant wowed the crowd with an 8 second flattening
of Josh McDonald at 215 lbs. As he has done so many
times, Bryant just waded into his opponent and pancaked
him right to his back.
The
marquee match of the evening was at 285 lbs. where
2 state ranked wrestlers (#9 Kevin Tompson and #10
Caleb Baker) went head to head for bragging
rights and some post season momentum. Thompson stunned
Baker last month at Tool City by pinning him in the
finals. Caleb's mission was to prove that result was
a fluke and he did just that.
There
was no scoring in the opening stanza, but the McLane
big man pushed Thompson hard and started to wear him
down. After several unsuccessful attempts, Baker finally
sat out, turned and then drove Thompson out of bounds
to take a 1-0 lead in the second period. In the final
period, Caleb rode Thompson with an intensity that
appeared to frustrate the Bulldog, who kept looking
to his coaches for help. Baker took a 2-0 lead when
Thompson was mercifully called for stalling. Caleb
decided to cut Thompson almost immediately after the
penalty point and then cruised to a 2-1 win. That
gave the Lancers a 44-6 lead.
Joe
Wheeling had his hands full with Zac Luben at
103 pounds, Luben who dropped from 112 had an obvious
edge in weight and strength, but Wheeling was tenacious
and kept the score close. Trailing 5-4 in the final
period, Joe managed to shrug Luben off the top, reverse
him and then ride him out for the final 1:10.
Nate
Ferrick ground out a 9-5 decision over Kris Nottingham
at 119 and Ryan Horn received a forfeit win
at 125. That made the final score, GM 56, Meadville
12.
News
and Notes from the Meadville Dual:
Caleb
Baker got his 112th career win against Thompson.
That tied him with Branden Stearns for #5 on
the Career Wins list. Caleb leads the team with 32
wins this season and needs just one more fall to break
Hayden Harrison's career record of 67. But
more importantly, Caleb appears to be at the top of
his game and ready to rumble in the upcoming post
season!!!
Travis
Bryant recorded his 27th win of the season with
an amazing 8 second fall. Travis leads the team with
21 pins on the year. He is just the 14th Lancer to
record 20 or more falls in a single season. Bryant
also has 59 career falls (#7 on the all-time list).
Zac
Baumgartner looked absolutely dominating in his
19-3 win over James Shields Thursday. Look for the
140 pounder to make some waves in the post-season.
Zac has 26 wins this season and 93 in his career.
Nate
Ferrick has been quietly doing a great job this
season. The Mclane junior just recorded his 20th win...and
sophomore Parker McDermott posted his 21st.
Congrats.
A
special THANK YOU to managers, DJ Myers and Ashlee
Cummings for all of their hard work and dedication
over the past 4 seasons. Though they don't get a lot
of press, they have been an integral part of the team.
The girls shoot video, compile box scores/stats and
perform a variety of other important tasks. Thank
you girls and good luck to both you!
Congratulations
and best of luck to all of the Mclane wrestling seniors.
May the wind always be at your back!

Fall To Prep In D10 AAA Duals Semifinal Round
The
Lancer wrestling team fell to Cathedral Prep in the
first round of Tuesday's District 10 AAA Team Duals
at McComb Fieldhouse. Prep won the match, 49-21 and
used six pins to score 36 of those points.
Travis
Bryant scored the only fall for the Lancers, a 48
second flattening of Pat Williamson. Zac Baumgartner
and Caleb Baker each received forfeit wins. Nate Ferrick
eked out an 11-9 decision over Aaron Crenshaw.
McDowell
won the District 10 AAA Team Title with a 41-27 win
over Corry in the semis and a convincing, 44-22 win
over Prep in the finals.
The
McLane wrestlers will be back in action on Thursday
evening at home for a Senior Night dual against Meadville.
The Lancers will try to secure their 10th dual win
of the season.
