Jr.
High Wrestlers Wrap Up Season at DuBois
The
Jr. High wrestling team had less than a full lineup
for their toughest test of the year in DuBois this
weekend. They were forced to forfeit 5 weight classes
and ended up losing 4 of the 5 duals they wrestled.
But the Jr. Lancers had a good year overall, finishing
the campaign with a 7-5 dual record and winning the
Northwestern and Mercer tournaments.
Hunter
Hendricks completed this season with a stellar
29-1 record. Hunter finished his jr. high career with
a 58-3 record, breaking the record (55) for career
wins which was held by his brother, Tyler. Hunter
also ended up tying the season pins record
(22 by Nick Soboleski) and also broke the career
pins record (34 by Nick Soboleski), when he recorded
his 39th pin at DuBois.
Kyle
Sult deserves kudos for completing an unbeaten
season. Sult was 28-0 with 16 pins and finished his
jr. high career with 51 wins. Kyle is only the third
jr. high wrestler to record 50 or more wins in two
years. Dylan Myers finished the season with
a 22-3 record with 18 pins. Ian Mallory also
had a great year. He compiled a 24-5 record with 21
of those wins coming by way of fall. Justin Miller
racked up 22 wins this year and Briggs Twitchell
had 20. Kendrick Storm Bailey had 18 wins,
17 by fall.

Nine GM Wrestlers Advance to Regionals
Four
McLane wrestlers made the 2012 District 10 AAA finals
at Central Tech on Saturday. Only DJ Myers
emerged victorious, and his win wasn't secured until
the final buzzer sounded. Myers pulled off a stunning,
8-7 come from behind victory against McDowell's Tyree
Spearman in their third meeting of the season. Trailing,
7-3 with 25 seconds remaining, Myers escaped to make
it 7-4. Spearman took a shot after being warned for
stalling, but DJ caught him with a powerful underhook
and pancaked the Trojan to his back for a takedown
and 2 back points to secure the win just as time expired.
Joe
Wheeling had an opening round bye and then posted
an 11-0 major decision over McDowell's Benji Yates
in the semifinals. Joe dropped a 9-0 major decision
in the finals to Prep's Jake Gromacki. Gromacki was
ranked 16th in the state at 113, but dropped to 106
for the post season. Freshman, Keller Watkins
made the finals at 113 lbs. Keller had a first round
bye and then squeeked out a 6-4 decision over Prep's
John Ciotti in the semis. Keller lost by fall in the
finals to Coleman Cousins of McDowell. Tim Wheeling
also had a preliminary round bye and then pinned
Meadville's Brandon Owens
in the quarterfinals. Wheeling followed that up with
another pin in the semis over Strong Vincent's Jared
Carlson. Tim lost, 6-3 in the finals to McDowell's
Steve Spearman.
Six
Mclane wrestlers made the consolation finals and four
of them came away with 3rd place medals and qualified
for for the NW Regional Tournament. Deane Twitchell
lost in the quaterfinal round but bounced back
with a pair of wins to take 3rd place at 120.
Ken Stoll wrestled a great tournament, losing
only once (6-4 in overtime) to the District's top
ranked 126 pounder, Nick Gibson of McDowell. Stoll
had 3 wins in the tourney, 2 falls and a major decision.
Tyler Hendricks won by fall over Brandon Jurkiewicz
of Strong Vincent in the quarterfinal round, then
lost a heart breaking, 4-3 decision to McDowell's
Jim Paulson in the semis. Tyler finished the tournament
with a pair of wins to nab 3rd. Chris Laird
took 3rd in the 170 lbs. division, losing just once,
to four time District 10 champ Zach Towers of Meadville.
Chris won three matches, including an upset over McDowell's
Anthony Forne in the consi finals.
Parker
McDermott and Alex Thayer also made the
podium with 4th place finishes. Parker went 2-2 and
just missed qualifying for regionals when he dropped
a 5-3 decision to Prep's Dan Krysiak in the consolation
finals. Thayer went 3-2, losing in the quaterfinals
to McDowell's Khlique Harris (ranked #2 in the state)
and in the consi finals to Franklin's Dan Geer. Two
of Alex's three wins were by fall.
All
of the Lancer wrestlers chalked up at least one win
in the tournament. Jimmy Nuhfer, and Jamie
Symanowki both went 2-2, Nick Soboleski
and Ethan Strobel each had 1 win. The McLane
team took 2nd place behind McDowell. It was the best
finish for the Lancers since they won the tournament
in 2007. Shane McChesney (McDowell) was named District
10 AAA Coach of the Year.
*
Alex Thayer became a NW Regional qualifier when Santos
Guerra of Central Tech had to drop out of the tournament.
The
regional qualifiers will be back in action at the
NW Regional AAA Tournament in Altoona, PA. on March
2nd and 3rd.
----------------------
News
and Notes:
DJ
Myers will enter the NW Regional Tournament with
one of the best Lancer won/loss records (36-1) in
quite some time. Hadley Harrison was 40-2 going
into the 2006 Regional Tourney and Hayden Harrison
was 34-1 in 2004. DJ had 2 falls over the weekend
bringing his career total to 58, that's ninth best
all-time. Myers is also now tied with Caleb Baker
for 3rd place on the all-time wins list with 121.
The only two McLane wrestlers with more wins are Hadley
Harrison (130) and Hayden Harrison (135).
Tim
Wheeling became the second Mclane wrestler to
reach 30 wins this year when he pinned Jared Carlson
of Strong Vincent in the semifinals. Tim's 30-6 season
record is somewhat deceiving since 5 of his 6 losses
are all to the same wrestler, Steve Spearman. Tim
has had great success at the District 10 Tournament.
He won it in 2009, placed 2nd twice and took 3rd last
year. Tim is tied for 5th place on the career wins
list with Donald Osinski. Both wrestlers have
120 career wins.
Good
luck to all eight regional qualifiers!

Lancers
Conclude Regular Season with 15th Dual Win
The
Mclane wrestlers wrapped up a very successful regular
season last night in Meadville with a 56-15
win over the Bulldogs. The team finished the 2011-2012
regular season with a 15-3 record (2 of those
3 losses came at the hands of the highly ranked McDowell
Trojans).
The
match started at 138 lbs. Tim Wheeling got
the Lancers rolling with a 44 second fall against
Kris Nottingham. Parker McDermott followed
with a 45 second pin over Cameron Demaison. DJ
Myers kept it going when he showed Anthony Olon
the lights in 47 ticks.
At
160 lbs. Tyler Hendricks pounded out a 14-6
major decision over Louis Crawford. That made the
score 22-0 in favor of the Lancers. Meadville got
on the board with a win by state ranked, Zack Towers
over Chris Laird at 170 lbs. Jamie Symanowski
picked up a forfeit at 182. Alex Thayer dropped
a 19-6 major decision to the District's top ranked
wrestler, Jimmy Sheilds at 195. Nick Soboleski
won by forfeit and then the Lancers forfeited at 285.
That made the score, GM 34 Meadville 15.
Joe
Wheeling rolled to a 22-4 technical fall over
Aaron Ehrgott at 106 and Keller Watkins duplicated
that effort with a 16-0 tech fall of his own at 113
lbs. At 120, Deane Twitchell posted a 13-2
major decision. At 126, Ken Stoll demonstrated
what the McLane coaching staff has known for a long
time. There is no substitute for physical conditioning.
Stoll was trailing his opponent, 5-1 at one point
and came roaring back to knot the score at 6. Ken
pulled out an exciting, 8-6 decision when he scored
the winning takedown against a tired opponent in overtime.
Jimmy Nuhfer picked up his first varsity win
with a 57 second fall over Brandon Owens to wrap up
the dual.
The
team will get a little more than a week of rest before
returning to action in the post season on February,
17 and 18th at the Districct 10 AAA Tournament
at Central Tech. Good luck!!!
News
and Notes:
With
his technical fall last night, Keller Watkins
made the GM record books in the 'Career Tech Falls
category. Keller is only a freshman and is tied for
3rd place with Matt Caro, Jason Hiltabidel,
Hadley Harrison and Cyrus Parlin. Keep
'em comin' Keller.
DJ
Myers also entered the GM record books in the
'Season Wins' category. DJ still has the entire post
season ahead and has the opportunity to end up on
a very short list of McLane wrestlers who have won
40 or more matches in a single season. DJ also needs
just one more pin to make the 'Season Falls' list.
Tim
Wheeling also made the books in the 'Career Falls'
category. Tim got his 45th career pin last night.
Kudos
to this year's Lancer wrestling team. I was very
impressed by this group of wrestlers. I didn't expect
them to go 15-3 and even injuries to some of the starters
toward the end of the season didn't seem to slow them
down. Fantastic season guys!

McLane
Wrestlers Pick Up Win #14 at Union City
The
Lancers wrapped up their busiest week of the season
with a 53-18 win over the Bears in Union City.
It was the team's 14th dual meet win, the most wins
by a McLane team since 2005-2006 when they racked
up 17.
The
match started at 126 where Deane Twitchell
posted a 7-4 decision over Kevin Lindsley. Ken
Stoll followed with a 10-3 decision over Tyler
Lindsley at 132. Tim Wheeling, Parker McDermott
and DJ Myers rattled of three straight pins
to give the Lancers a 24-0 lead. Tyler Hendricks
survived a 3rd period rally by his opponent and pulled
off an 8-6 overtime victory at 160 lbs. The Bears
finally got on the board at 170 lbs. when Tim Vargo,
ranked 7th in the state, pinned Chris Laird.
GM
responded with pins by Alex Thayer and Jamie
Symanowski at 182 and 195. Nick Soboleski
added a win by decision at 220 lbs. to put the Lancers
up, 42-6. After forfeiting at 285, GM came back with
two more wins. Joe Wheeling flattened his opponent
in 53 seconds at 106 and Keller Watkins posted
his 7th technical fall of the season at 113 lbs. That
made it, 53-12 in favor of the Lancers. Union
City got one more win at 120 lbs. to make the final
score, GM-53 Union City-18.
The
GM crew will will wrestle their last dual of the season
in Meadville against the Bulldogs on Wednesday, February
8th.
News
and Notes:
DJ
Myers leads the team with 32 wins on the season.
DJ and Tim Wheeling are tied with 117
career wins (#5 on the all-time list). The duo just
passed Parker Middle School Assistant Coach, Tom Kirdahy
who had 116. High school Assistant Coach, Hayden
Harrison holds the record for most career wins
at 135.
Joe
Wheeling, Keller Watkins, Deane Twitchell,
Parker McDermott, Tyler Hendricks and
Chris Laird have all reached the 20+ win mark
for the season. Tim Wheeling is 27-5 this season,
with 4 of those loses coming at the hands of the state's
top ranked 138 ponder, Steve Spearman.
Freshman,
Keller Watkins has posted an incredible 7 technical
falls so far in his first varsity season. That could
very well be the most ever in a season and is undoubtedly
a freshman record (unfortunately no records were kept
on season tech falls). Watkins could end up shattering
the career mark. Mike Caro is the current leader with
12 and he has held that record since 1987.
If
the McLane wrestlers beat Meadville next Wednesday
it would be their 15th dual meet win of the season.
Only four other McLane teams have ever won more duals
in a single season 1979-80 (16), 1982-83
(18), 2002-03 (23) and 2005-06 (17).

Lancers
Impressive at District 10 Team Duals
Even
with two starters out of the lineup due to injuries,
the McLane wrestling team was impressive at Edinboro's
McComb Fieldhouse on Wednesday. Coach Cook
made a strategic move, bumping up a trio of wrestlers
against Prep. That move enabled the Lancers to pick
up a couple of key wins with bonus points that resulted
in a 39-23 victory over the Ramblers. That win propelled
Mclane into their first District 10 Team Duals finals
since 2006. But unlike 2006, the Lancers just didn't
have enough horsepower to get past McDowell.
The
match against Prep started at 120 lbs. and it was
a close one for awhile. There were three lead changes
through 160, but then the Lancers put the hammer down.
Down by 3 points (14-17), Tyler Hendricks bumped
up to 171 lbs. and gained a 6-0 shutout over Chris
Smith. Chris Laird also up a weight class,
scored an 8-0 major decision over Chris Starroci.
At 195 lbs. Alex Thayer showed McDowell's JJ
Williams the lights in 3:53. Nick Soboleski
followed with a 10-0 major decision over James Trucilla
at 220. That gave Mclane a commanding 31-17 lead.
The Ramblers got another 6 team points with a pin
at 285, but Joe Wheeling and Keller Watkins
stopped the Prep rally cold. Wheeling posted a 16-0
technical fall at 106 and Watkins ground out a 5-2
decision over John Ciotti at 113.
In
the finals against McDowell, the GM wrestlers found
themselves in an 18-0 hole right out of the gate.
Then came the marquee match of the night at 152, DJ
Myers and Tyree Spearman. Spearman took a 3-0
lead when he escaped early in the second stanza and
then countered a Myers pancake attempt with a roll
through for a takedown. DJ escaped moments later to
make it 3-1 and then picked up another escape four
seconds into the third period to make it 3-2. For
the rest of the period Myers kept attacking Spearman,
but the Trojan looked like he would hold for the win
when he fought off two of DJ's last minute, desperation
leg attacks. But Myers fought his way out of a front
headlock, lurched forward, grabbed Spearman's leg,
lurched forward again, switched to a double and set
the Trojan down on the mat right at the buzzer. Final
score: Myers-4, Spearman-3!!!
Tyler
Hendricks got another win for the Lancers at 160
with a hard fought, 3-2 win over Jimmy Paulson. The
score stood at 17-6 in McDowell's favor at that point,
but that's as close as it would get. GM picked up
their only other wins at 106 where Joe Wheeling
thrashed Benji Yates, 17-5 and in the finale at 120
lbs. when McDowell elected to forfeit.
It
should be noted that several of McDowell's wins did
not come easy. At 145 lbs., Parker McDermott
wrestled a gutsy match against the District's top
ranked wrestler, Cody Nolan. Chris Laird came
close to upsetting Anthony Forne at 170 lbs. Laird
lost, 5-3 nearly picking up a bout tying takedown
at the buzzer. Alex Thayer suffered a heart
breaking, 6-4 overtime loss at 195. Keller Watkins
lost by a single point to (3-2) Paul Deitz at 113
lbs.
Congratulations
to McDowell and good luck at the PIAA Team Duals in
Hershey.
Video
of the exciting match between DJ Myers and Tyree Spearman.
News
and Notes:
The
Lancers are now 13-3 on the season with two of their
three losses coming at the hands of a very talented
McDowell team. The Mclane wrestlers will finish a
very busy week with a dual meet vs. the Bears at Union
City on Thursday evening.
DJ
Myers became the first McLane wrestler to reach
30 wins on the season when he pinned Prep's Jordan
Perkowski in the semifinals. DJ's heart thumping win
over Spearman in the finals was the 116th of his career.
That ties him for #5 all-time with Tom Kirdahy!
Tim Wheeling also is tied with the pair at
116 career wins.
In
the other District 10 Team Duals semifinal match,
McDowell beat Titusville, 60-9.
