MALLORY AND
LAIRD WIN D10 TITLES- 11 LANCERS ADVANCE
The
McLane wrestling team came up short in their effort to repeat
as District 10 AAA Tournament Champions this weekend. But
they did crown two champs and 11 of 14 GM wrestlers
will advance to the NW Regional Tournament in Altoona
next weekend. Six Lancers advanced to the finals on Saturday.
Brett Mallory (126), Hunter Hendricks (138),
Briggs Twitchell (145), Owen Watkins (152),
Ethan Laird (170) and Jacob Lenhardt (285)
all made the finals. Five others made the consolation finals:
Andrew Brest (106), Brad Motter (120), Jordan
Motter (160), Riley Vaughn (182) and Adam
Steiner (220).
Brett
Mallory was crowned the champ at 126 lbs. in his first
post-season tournament appearance after scoring back to
back pins over Oil City's Cameron Myers and Titusville's
James Johnson in the finals. Ethan Laird won his
first District title, after finishing 2nd his freshman and
sophomore years. He pinned Eli Lewis of Oil City and then
pulled out a tough, 5-2 decision over McDowell's Ryan Dailey.
Hunter
Hendricks returned after several weeks on the sidelines
and made it to the final round. He knocked off McDowell's
Keegan Fordyce, 10-6 and then Warren's Jacob Engstrom with
a 12-4 major decision. He lost to Prep's Carter Starocci
in the finals. Briggs Twitchell dominated his first
two opponents, racking up a fall and a major decision, before
losing a 5-4 heart breaker in the finals. Owen Watkins
posted 2 falls on his way to the finals, but was unable
to repeat as a champion. He dropped a wild, 11-6 decision
to a feisty, Dazion Casto of McDowell. Jacob Lenhardt
also had to settle for 2nd place when he lost to Prep's
talented freshman, KaWaun DeBoe in the finals. Jacob won
by fall in the quarters and then posted a solid, 4-0 decision
in the semis.
Brad
Motter went 3-1 and took 3rd at 120 lbs. He racked up
a fall, tech fall and a decision in his effort. His only
loss was to top seed, Leno Ciotti of McDowell in the semifinal
round. Motter pulled out one of the tournament's wildest
comebacks in the consolation finals. He was trailing Warren's
Winslow, 7-2 late in the 3rd period when reversed the Dragon
and took him to his back to tie the score at the end of
regulation. He nailed the winning takedown in overtime.
Riley Vaughn also went 3-1 and grabbed the bronze.
He had a fall, major decision and a decision in his effort.
Riley also won a nail biter in the consolation finals. He
was awarded a penalty point in the 2nd period and took a
1-0 lead. He managed to keep his opponent from escaping
in the 3rd period to pull off the win.
Placing
4th and moving on to regionals were Andrew Brest,
Jordan Motter and Adam Steiner. Both of Brest's
wins were pins. Jordan Motter and Adam Steiner both lost
close decisions in their final matches. Andrew Brest was
forced to forfeit his consi final bout due to a sore shoulder.
The
Lancers will be back in action in Altoona on March 4th and
5th at the NW Regional Tournament. GM has done well at the
tournament in recent years. They won it in 2013 and placed
2nd in 2012, 2014 and 2015.
Notes
From the D10 Tournament:
Briggs
and Ethan became the first GM wrestlers to reach
the 30 win mark this year. Ethan has 31 and Briggs 30. Laird
now has 95 career wins. Jordan and Riley
both cracked the 20 win barrier.
This
was the first time since 2011 a McLane wrestling team hasn't
finished 1st or 2nd at the tournament. In the past 7 years,
no GM team has finshed lower than 3rd!
Mason
Fitzsimmons wrestled his final varsity match at Districts.
Mason didn't even start wrestling until his sophomore year
and still picked up 11 wins in a reserve roll. He got stronger
and showed a lot of improvement over the past 3 years. Jay
Hardy, who was basically a first year wrestler also
did a great job for the Lancers. Hardy posted an 8-5 record
before being sidelined by an injury at the end of the regular
season. Congrats to both wrestlers and good luck!

SHORT HANDED
LANCERS FALL TO MCDOWELL. 34-24
The
McLane wrestling team knew they had an uphill battle
heading into this year's District 10 AAA Team Duals Tournament.
They were missing starters Hunter Hendricks, Jay Hardy,
Adam Steiner and Jacob Lenhardt. On top of that, Andrew
Brest was questionable due to a recent illness and Owen
Watkins was not 100%. Sickness and injuries had taken it's
toll on half the team. Despite all that, McLane managed
to give a tough McDowell squad all they could handle.
In fact the Lancers led the Trojans for most of the match
and didn't give up the lead until there were just two bouts
left.
Briggs
Twitchell was the first wrestler to bring the screaming
GM fans to their feet. He trailed Luke Peterson for most
of his match. Briggs was still two points in the hole, but
with just 33 seconds remaining he overpowered Peterson's
whizzer attempt, took the Trojan to his back and decked
him.
McDowell
won the next two bouts at 152 and 160 which knotted the
team score at 6. Ethan Laird won a hard fought decision
over Ryan Dailey at 170, putting the Lancers back on top,
9-6. Riley Vaughn followed with a 5-4 decision over
Mike Kurelowech in bout that wasn't as close as the score
would indicate. Vaughn led for the entire match and 3 of
Kurelowech's points were scored late in that match.
McDowell
won with a major decision at 195 lbs. to pull to within
3 points of Lancers (12-9). The bout at 220 may have been
the one that ultimately decided the outcome. In a match
that could have gone either way, Trent Linder and
Quentin Cook wrestled a wild one. Linder rolled through
a Cook headlock and took the Trojan to his back at one point.
But Cook caught Linder and decked him with just 11 seconds
remaining in the second period. That gave McDowell back
the lead, (16-12).
Backup
heavyweight Tyler LaRocca came out and dominated
Andre Gibson before pinning him at 3:54. That put McLane
back on top, 18-16. Andrew Brest followed up at 106
with a solid, 3-0 win that made the team score, GM-21 McDowell-16.
The Trojans tightened the score again (21-19) with a decision
at 113. Brad Motter posted a dominating, 5-1 decision
at 120 lbs. putting the Lancers out in front by five points
again. But with a forfeit and the Ciotti brothers looming,
it was obvious that lead wasn't going to be enough. McDowell
took the last three weight classes to make the final score,
34-24.
The
McLane wrestlers will be back in action for the post-season
on February 26th and 27th at the District 10 AAA Tournament.
Notes
from the D10 Duals:
I
was very proud of the way the GM wrestlers battled through
adversity last night. Kudos to Briggs Twitchell for
the way he just kept coming at his opponent and finally
getting the fall in the evening's first bout. I could tell
Owen Watkins wasn't 100% last night, but he gave
it his all in a losing effort to a wrestler he pinned twice
last year. Jack Kaulis was outmatched by a much more
experienced Trojan wrestler, but fought hard and avoided
a technical fall, saving GM a team point.
Tyler
LaRocca, in just his second varsity match, came out
on the mat like he was on a mission. He went after McDowell's
285 pounder and kept the pressure on until he had Gibson
on his back for good. Two varsity matches and two wins!
WTG Tyler! Andrew Brest was questionable due to an
illness, but he came out because his team still had a chance
to win. He did what he needed to do early in his match and
then coasted to a 3-0 victory. Mason Fitzsimmons
fought hard at 113 lbs. and avoided going to his back several
times against a more experienced wrestler. The McLane senior, who
didn't start wrestling until his sophomore year has shown
a lot of improvement over the past 3 seasons.
And
finally, a tip of the cap to Brett Mallory. Mallory
had the unenviable task of facing a state ranked wrestler
late in the match. But the McLane sophomore kept his head,
hung in there and held Leno Ciotti to a regular decision!
Congratulations
to Coach Cook for another sucessful duals season.
Cook finishes his 12th dual meet season with 161 wins, making
him (by far) the winningest coach in GM wrestling history.
In fact, under Coach Cook the Lancers have never had a losing
season. His worst season since coming aboard in 2004 was
10-7 in 2008-09. Congratulations Coach!
I'm
excited about the post-season. While this GM team doesn't
have the number of dominant wrestlers they did last season,
they are very solid and well balanced. If everyone heals
and is healthy I think they have an excellent shot at winning
the District 10 AAA Tournament!

LANCERS CLINCH
4TH STRAIGHT REGION TITLE
The
McLane wrestling team pulled off a hard fought, 41-27
win over Titusville on Tuesday, despite having five
starters missing from the lineup. The Lancers were forced
to forfeit the 106 and 138 lbs. weight classes and were
hanging on to a slim 23-18 lead. But they got two clutch
wins from backups Trenton Linder and Tyler LaRocca
that all but sealed the GM victory. The win gave the
Lancers a share of the Region 4 title along with Cathedral
Prep and McDowell. All three teams finished Region action
with 8-1 records. It marked the 4th straight year McLane
has won the title.
Titusville
took a 12-0 lead out of the gate winning by fall at 132
lbs. and accepting a forfeit at 138. The Lancers finally
got out in front, 13-12 after three wins by Briggs Twitchell,
Owen Watkins and Jordan Motter. Titusville
re-took the lead, 18-13 after they won by fall at 170. But
Ethan Laird won by forfeit at 182 and then Riley
Vaughn, Trenton Linder and Tyler LaRocca all
rattled off wins to give the Lancers a nearly insurmountable
32-18 lead. Titusville got two more wins, a forfeit at 106
and Chris Wig's major decision at 113 to close the gap to
32-28. But Brad Motter came though in the bout of
the night when he pulled off an 8-6 overtime decision against
Nick Hart. Brett Mallory put the icing on the cake
when he won by fall in the final bout.
The
McLane wrestlers will face McDowell on Thursday at 5 PM
at Cathedral Prep's new gymnasium. The Lancers will try
to defend their District 10 AAA Team Duals title. But they
will be without several key starters.
Notes
from Titusville:
Congratulations
to Trenton Linder and Tyler LaRocca who both
nailed their first varsity wins with the Region 4 title
hanging in the balance. WTG guys!
Brett
Mallory joined Ethan Laird, Briggs Twitchell,
Adam Steiner and Jacob Lenhardt in the 20+
season wins club. Jordan Motter needs one more win
to become a member.
