LAIRD AND BREST WIN DISTRICT 10 TITLES
9 OF 11 MCLANE WRESTLERS ADVANCE

Ethan Laird and Andrew Brest both won titles this weekend at the Distict 10 AAA Tournament at McDowell and the team finished 2nd, despite the fact that they only competed in 11 of 14 weight classes. Of those 11 wrestlers, 9 advanced to next weekend's NW Regional Tournament.

Sophomore, Andrew Brest won his first District 10 crown in dominating fashion. Seeded first in the tournament, he recieved a bye in the quarterfinal round. In the semis, he pinned Avery Smith of Warren in 1:56. He followed that up with a second period technical fall over Oil City's Carter Stanley. Brest used a series of takedowns and tilts to rack up 19 points in less than 4 minutes.

Ethan Laird also dominated his opponents. The top seed pinned McDowell's Alex Bielak in just 1:05 and then scored an 11-3 major decision over state ranked, Mike Hughes of Prep in the finals. Ethan dominated Hughes from the neutral position and took the Rambler to his back for bonus points in the 3rd period.

Owen Watkins, Jack Kaulis, Riley Vaughn and Jacob Lenhardt also made the finals, but came up short. Watkins pinned McDowell's Max Burkyn in the quarterfinals and won by technical fall over Warren's Blake Ristau in the semis. But he dropped a 7-2 decision to 3rd ranked, Carter Starocci of Prep in the finals. Kaulis, seeded 4th in the tournament, pinned Central's Matt Hoover in the quarters. He then upset second seed, Tom Pollard of Meadville, 3-2 in the semis, avenging an early season loss to the Bulldog wrestler. Jack lost his final match to state ranked (10th), Jake Paulson of McDowell. Vaughn rode a bye into the semis where he pulled off a near miracle. With time running out and trailing McDowell's Quentin Cook 8-7, Vaughn pinned the Trojan with just 3 seconds remaining in the bout! He lost in the finals to state ranked, Jeff Craig of Meadville. Lenhardt pinned his first two opponents, both in under a minute, but then dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Prep's 4th ranked, Kawaun DeBoe in the finals.

Jon Carrier took 3rd place at 160 lbs. He pinned Zennon Bardsley of McDowell in just 26 seconds in the quarterfinals, then suffered his lone loss to tournament runnerup, Nick Desimone of Warren in the semis. Jon won his last two bouts to snag the bronze. Brett Mallory and Cayden Connolly both went 2-2 and took 4th place, good enough to earn a trip to regionals.

The NW Regional AAA Tournament is scheduled for March 3rd and 4th in Altoona, PA.

Notes:

Ethan Laird is a 4 time District 10 finalist and won two titles. He is 32-1 on the season and has won 28 straight matches. Ethan's only loss of the season came at the hands of the #1 ranked 195 pounder in the state, Cole Nye of Bishop McDevitt in December. Laird also now has 131 career wins.. He just passed Hadley Harrison (130) and is 3rd on the all-time wins list, behind Joe Wheeling (132) and Hayden Harrison (135).

Owen Watkins became a 3 time district finalist on Saturday. He won the 145 lbs. title his sophomore year. Owen's pin in the semifinals, was his 20th of the season. That gave him another entry in the GM record books for 'Season Falls.' He has 60 career falls, good enough for sixth best of all time. Watkins also needs just 2 more wins to join GM's 100 Win Club! Owen has lost only 4 times this season and 3 of those losses came at the hands of Prep's Carter Starocci, who's ranked #3 in the state. His only other loss was by 1 point to Riley Palmer of Council Rock South, who was ranked #1 in the state at the time.

Andrew Brest has improved tremendously since last season when he posted a modest, 18-14 record and placed 4th at districts. Brest has been dominant this season, posting a 29-4 record, with 2 of his losses coming at the hands of state ranked wrestlers. Now he can add 106 pound District 10 Champ to his resume!

Jacob Lenhardt is also having a great season. The Lancer senior has compiled a 27-5 record with 17 pins. 3 of his 5 losses were to Prep's 4th ranked Kawaun Deboe (2 of them by a single point). His other 2 losses were close ones, also at the hands of state ranked opponents.

McLane Wrestlers Pull Off Another Miracle Win

For the third time this year the McLane wrestling team found themselves in a big hole against a quality opponent, and for the third time, they found a way to dig themselves out of it. The match started at 120 lbs. and after the 182 lbs. match, Perry, OH. held a nearly insurmountable, 38-12 lead over the Lancers. But GM sent out their big guns starting at 195 pounds and scored the last 27 points to pull out a 39-38 win!

Perry won the first three bouts, two by forfeit and seven of the first nine weight classes to take that huge lead. But the Lancers came back to win the last five bouts, three of them by by fall. Brett Mallory and Owen Watkins scored GM's two early wins. Mallory posted a second period pin and Watkins won by forfeit when Perry elected not to send out a wrestler at 152 lbs.

Riley Vaughn got the rally started and the house rockin' when he finally decked Jeremiah Toomey with just 55 seconds left in their bout. Ethan Laird bumped up a weight class to take on Nick Mason. Ethan was in control of the match from the beginning and took a big lead before scoring a fall at the 3:52 mark. Jacob Lenhardt couldn't get a takedown against Perry's heavyweight, Alec Gonzalez, but reversed him early in the second stanza. Lenhardt hit a crossface, tied up Gonzalez's arms and stuck him 37 seconds into the second period.

Perry had to send out their wrestler first at 106. They chose to forfeit and Coach Cook sent out Patrick Angelo to accept the forfeit. At that point, the Pirates held a 38-36 lead with one bout to go. That left Andrew Brest in the clean up spot to face highly touted Kyle Rowan. Brest got an early lead with two takedowns and an escape and hung on to win, 5-0.

The GM wrestlers will be back in action at the District 10 AAA Tournament on February 24th and 25th. The top four place winners will advance to the NW Regional Tournament in Altoona on March 3rd and 4th.

Notes:

General McLane's wrestling seniors were honored before the match. Owen Watkins, Ethan Laird, Trent Linder, Jacob Lenhardt, Riley Vaughn and Jon Carrier will all graduate this year. A special 'Thank you' to senior manager, Hannah Taylor for her hard work over the past 4 years. It's been a pleasure working with you!

Ethan Laird racked up his 30th win of the year and the 129th of his career against Perry. With his win by fall on Saturday, Laird also tied Joe Wheeling for the #11 spot on the GM 'Career pins' list.

Perry chose to forfeit at 152, so Owen Watkins will have to wait until the District 10 Tournament to record his 20th fall of the season. Owen also has 96 career wins and hopefully will get his 100th at regionals.

With the dual meet season coming to a close, now is a good time to recognize Coach Cook's accomplishments. Since taking over as head coach in 2004, Cook has amassed a 172 win, 60 loss record (a 74% winning pct.). Coach Cook has coached 33 District X champions, 106 District 10 placewinners, 8 NW Regional champions, 48 NW Regional placewinners, 33 state qualifiers and 6 state placewinners. In 2014, Coach Cook coached his first state finalist at the PIAA Tournament (Joe Wheeling). During the off season he also coached 7 National Folkstyle Champions and 27 National Folkstyle Placewinners. I am most amazed by the fact that in his 13 year's at the helm, Coach Cook's teams have never once ended the season with a losing record!!!

Lancers Notch 10th Win of Season Over Oilers

The McLane wrestling team won their 10th dual meet of the year on Friday over Oil City by a score of 58-18. The Oilers only managed one contested win in the match. Their other points came by way of GM forfeits at 120 and 132.

Winning by fall for GM were Andrew Brest, Owen Watkins and Jon Carrier. Elijah Schreiber added a 15-4 major decision. Brett Mallory and Phillip Orris posted wins by decision. Patrick Angelo, Jack Kaulis, Ethan Laird, Riley Vaughn and Jacob Lenhardt all won by forfeit.

Oil City was the last Region 4 match of the year. The Lancers finish Region action with a 7-2 record, good enough for 3rd place behind Cathedral Prep and Meadville.

The Lancers will face the Perry, OH. Pirates for the first ever meeting between the two teams on Saturday, Feb. 11th at 3 PM at GMHS. It's also Senior Night!

Notes:

Congrats to Phillip Orris on his first varsity win at Oil Ciity! Ethan Laird posted his 128th career win against the Oilers. He need just two more to tie Hadley Harrison for 3rd place on GM's all-time wins list. Ethan has rattled off 24 straight wins since December when he lost, 4-3 in the King of the Mountain Tournament to last year's AA state runnerup. Owen Watkins recorded his 19th fall of the season on Friday and needs just one more fall to make the GM "Elite" list. Watkins would be the first McLane westler to post 20 or more pins in a season since DJ Myers did it 2011-2012.

McLane Beats Meadville, Loses to
Ramblers at District 10 AAA Team Duals

When the 2016-17 season started it looked like the McLane wrestling team was going to be a strong tournament team and with the exception of Cathedral Prep, even dominate the rest of their Region 4 opponents. But when they were upset by Meadville three weeks ago and then lost to Prep the following week, it seemed to shake their confidence. They had a disappointing Tool City Tournament, finishing 5th after winning it last year. At the Clearfield Duals, they won two matches, but then dropped three straight. All of a sudden they found themselves at 6-5, with the worst record any GM wrestling team had sported since Coach Cook took over the program in 2004. Not only that, but the dual meet schedule that lay ahead of them was daunting. They fell out of the D10 rankings and faced the very real possibility of not even making the District 10 Team Duals for the first time since 2007.

To get in, the Lancers would have to knock off the District's #3 and #2 teams on successive nights. But then a funny thing happened. To nearly everyone's surprise, they did exactly that! The first night, they pulled out a 5 point win over favored McDowell on the last match of the evening, despite forfeiting four weight classes. The following day they were trailing, then #2 Warren, 37-33 when Jack Kaulis came in and scored a technical fall to secure a 38-37 victory. That put them in The Duals as the #3 seed.

The match Wednesday evening against #2 Meadville, didn't come close to resembling the first meeting between the two teams. The Lancers even lost the coin toss and the first bout at 145 lbs. But then they rattled of four straight wins, two by fall to take a 22-6 lead. The string of wins was interrupted when Riley Vaughn lost to state ranked, Jeff Craig at 195. But Vaughn, in his first match after being out of the lineup for nearly a month, gave Craig everything he could handle, losing by a slim, 7-6 margin. Had Riley not given up a reversal with just 2 seconds remaining in the second period, he most likely would have walked off with the decision. McLane won the remaining contested bouts to make the final score, GM 57 - Meadville 21. Owen Watkins, Cayden Connolly, Jacob Lenhardt, Andrew Brest, Kyle Bloomquist and Brett Mallory all scored pins for GM. Ethan Laird added a 19-4 technical fall and Jon Carrier won by major decision.

GM had to settle for Team Duals Runnerup when they dropped a 53-9 decision to Prep in the finals. But that loss was almost a foregone conclusion. The Ramblers are loaded with talent this season and have dominated their Region 4 competition. The Lancers only managed three wins against Prep, but at this point they definitely look like the second best team in the Region!

The Lancers now stand at 9-6 overall and 6-2 in Region 4 with one Region dual meet remaining. They will be back in action on February 10th at Oil City. Then the regular season will conclude against Perry, OH. at home on Senior Night - Saturday, February 11th.

Notes:

Ethan Laird scored two wins Wednesday and is now 28-1 on the season. He also just passed Tim Wheeling (126) with his 127th career win. He is now 4th on the 'Career Wins' list, trailing only Hadley Harrison (130), Joe Wheeling (132) and Hayden Harrison (135).

Owen Watkins has 94 career wins and 58 career pins (#8 all-time). He also has a good shot at making the GM record books for 'Season Falls.' Watkins has 18 pins this season and needs just two more to make the list.

Andrew Brest continues to look impressive. Only a sophomore, Brest has quietly compiled a 25-4 record with 13 pins, 1 technical fall and 4 major decisions.

No less than five McLane wrestlers are in double digits for falls this season. Brest (13), Mallory (11), Watkins (18), Laird (12) and Lenhardt (14). Connolly is close with 9.

With the 57-21 thumping of Meadville last night, Ryan Cook recorded his 170th dual meet win since taking over as Head Wrestling Coach in 2004. That's 33 more wins than GM Hall of Fame Coach, Tim Mulholland recorded in his 12 years at the helm. The Lancers' dual meet record since 2004 is most impressive - 171 wins / 70 losses (a 71% winning pct.)! Cook's team's have also been selected to participate in the District 10 AAA Team Duals 12 of his 13 years as head coach, twice making it to the State Duals!
