GM WRESTLERS WIN TITLES - 9 MOVE ON TO REGIONALS
Nine
General McLane wrestlers placed in the top four
at the District 10 AAA Tournament and will advance
to next weekend's NW Regional Tournament in Altoona.
Andrew Brest, Brett Mallory and Jack
Kaulis all won titles in their respective weight
classes. Matt Leehan also made the finals
but dropped a tough 5-2 decision.
Andrew
Brest (ranked 5th in the state) won the 106
lbs. title when he received byes into the finals
and then won by default over Meadville's Vince Rinella.
Jack Kaulis pulled out a couple of
nail biters to win the 170 lbs. crown. He squeaked
by Warren's Liam Stevenson, 4-2 in the semifinals
and then decisioned Erie's Arlan Pulliam, 3-2 in
the finale.
But
it was Brett Mallory who may have had the
best day of his wrestling career on Saturday. Brett
pinned Erie's Patrick Dacus in the quarterfinal
round and then pulled off two big upsets over state
ranked opponents to grab the gold. Mallory and 2nd
seed, Albert Taylor of Cathedral Prep were deadlocked,
0-0 in the 3rd period when Brett locked up a cradle
and took Taylor to his back for the fall at 4:41.
In the finals, Mallory was trailing top seed, Nick
Rinella of Meadville, 1-0 going into the 3rd period
when he went on a scoring spree. He reversed Rinella
and took him to his back for a quick 5 points. Rinella
escaped but Mallory took the Bulldog back to the
mat to make the final score, 7-2. It was Brett's
second District 10 title. He won the 126 lbs. crown
in 2016.
Matt
Leehan received a bye in the quarterfinal round
and then scored a lopsided, 16-2 major decision
over Oil City's Carter Stanley in the semis. Leehan
wrestled aggressively in the finals, but lost a
hard fought, 5-2 decision to Prep's Paniro Johnson.
Beau
Caro and Seth Yarger both snagged 3rd
place finishes. Brad Motter, Cayden Connolly
and James Laird rounded out the GM regional
qualifiers with 4th place finishes.
The
GM wrestling team finished the tournament
in 2nd place behind Cathedral Prep for the second
straight year.

GM
WRESTLERS END DUAL SEASON WITH WIN OVER OILERS
The
GM wrestling team concluded their 2017-18 dual meet
schedule with a 59-18 win over visiting Oil City
on Tuesday evening. With that win, the young Lancer
squad completed the year with a regular season record
of 8-5, an overall record of 9-6 and a Region 4
record of 5-2 (good enough for 3rd place).
The
match started at 145 lbs. where Brad Motter
was forced to default in the 2nd period due to a
nagging injury. But GM would rack up the next 10
wins to put the contest out of reach of the Oilers.
Brett Mallory, and James Laird recorded
pins at 152 and 160, respectively. Dimitri Alberti
and Jack Kaulis both won by forfeit.
After a double forfeit at 195 lbs. the Lancers won
the next 6 bouts. Seth Yarger accepted a
forfeit at 220 and Enrique Cornejo won by
fall at 285.
Gabe
Bayle and Beau Caro both picked up wins
by forfeit at 106 and 113 lbs. At 120 lbs., freshman,
Matt Leehan rolled to a 17-2 technical fall
over 2017 District 10 runnerup, Carter Stanley.
Clay Kuntz got GM's last points with a win
by forfeit at 126 lbs. Oil City posted falls in
the last two weight classes to make the final score,
GM-59 Oil City 18.
The
Lancers will be back in action for the individual
post season at the District 10 AAA Tournament
on February 24th at McDowell High School.
Notes:
Congrats
to Coach Cook for another successful season!
With the team's 9 dual meet wins this season, Cook
ran his 14 year head coaching record to 181-66 (73%
winning pct.). That includes a 15-0 unbeaten regular
season record in 2012-13, four straight Region 4
team titles from 2012-2016 and 2 District 10 AAA
Team Duals titles!
This
marks the 20th consecutive year a General
McLane wrestling team has finished the season
with a winning dual meet record. This is a tribute
to great coaching at not only the high school level,
but also in the jr. high and youth programs!
Kudos
to first year JWPMS head coach, Brandon
Saraceno and his coaching staff for a very successful
season. Sarceno has guided the Jr. High team to
a 9-2 record and a runnerup finish at the Burrell
Duals!
Jack
Kaulis and Andrew Brest lead the team
with 24 wins each! Matt Leehan has 23 wins
and leads the team with 14 pins!
