GM WRESTLERS WIN DISTRICT 10 AAA TOURNAMENT
CROWN TWO CHAMPS!

The McLane wrestling team tied for the D10 AAA team title with Cathedral Prep on Thursday in Meadville. Wilson Spires and Magnus Lloyd won titles and eleven GM wrestlers qualified for next weekend's NW Regional Tournament in Altoona. Not only did the team come out on top, so did the GM coaches. Ryan Cook and Hunter Harrison were named Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year!

McLane had eight finalists in the tournament. Sophomore, Magnus Lloyd notched his second straight title at 172 pounds. Lloyd won his first match by fall. He faced off against a very tough opponent in Prep's Kelyn Blossey in the finals. Lloyd got the first takedown by countering a Blossey shot with a tight whizzer and turning it into a merkel. Blossey escaped quickly to make it, 2-1. In the second period, Magnus escaped and then picked up a second takedown when he effectively countered another shot. Blossey escaped and added another escape in the final period, but Lloyd hung on for the win.

Wilson Spires nailed down his first D10 title, winning by fall over McDowell's Jack Sroka in the finals. Spires was clearly in control through the entire bout. He just missed scoring twice on a couple of beautiful lateral drops in the first period when he landed just barely out of bounds.Wilson finally muscled Peterson to his back about a minute and a half in, with a body lock and got the fall.

Teige Berger, Ethan Snyder, Hudson Spires, Kyle Cousins, Jessi Stempka and Russell Wismer all placed 2nd. Of the six GM runnerups, freshman, Hudson Spires came the closest to winning a title. He was in a knock down-drag out bout and leading Meadville's Brighton Anderson, 9-8 when he gave up a reversal with just 7 seconds remaining. Ethan Brest, Ben Watkins and Dan Mulligan also advanced to regionals with 3rd place finishes.

The qualifiers will travel to Altoona for the NW Regional AAA Tournament, which will be held on March 4th and 5th.

Notes: A big congratulations to Ryan Cook and Hunter Harrison for being named 2021-22 District 10 AAA Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year! It was the second straight year the two have been selected for the honor! This marks the fourth time Coach Cook has been named the District 10 AAA Coach of the Year. He won previous awards in 2005-06, 2012-13 and 2020-21.

Wilson Spires posted his 20th and 21st pins of the season at districts. Wilson became just the 24th GM wrestler in the history of the program to rack up 20 or more pins in a single season. The record is 28, which is held by both Kyle Goss (2006) and Travis Bryant (2011). This is the second time Spires has cracked the 20+ pin barrier. He flattened 23 opponents during his freshman year. Spires is currently #12 on the list for 'career pins' with 56 and he still has one season to go. If he stays healthy, he has an excellent chance of breaking Caleb Baker's career record of 72, which was set in 2011. Wilson also leads the team in wins (34) and takedowns (57). Spires also needs just 15 more wins to break 100 for his career. Magnus Lloyd is right behind Wilson with 32 wins on the year.

LANCERS GO 0-2 AT PIAA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

The McLane wrestling team once again battled like warriors but came up short, losing to #14, Central Dauphin, 34-24 in the first round and then to #8, Council Rock South, 44-16 in the first consolation round at the PIAA Team Duals Championships. Although they went 0-2, it was nothing short of an amazing accomplishment for a team that very few people expected to win the D10 AAA title or make the trip to Hershey.

The Lancers got off on the right foot by taking an early lead over Central Dauphin. Jessi Stempka pinned Carson Cassel at 215 and then Wilson Spires won a close, 5-3 decision over 17th ranked, Benjamin Stewart at heavyweight, giving GM a 9-0 advantage. But Central Dauphin responded with five straight wins to take a 24-9 lead that they would never relinquish. One bright spot was Hudson Spires' bout at 138 lbs. Spires dominated on his feet to grind out a 6-4 decision over a tough opponent. Central Dauphin won the next three bouts to clinch the contest. Magnus Lloyd and Brandon Dedrick finished with forfeit wins after Dauphin opted to not send out wrestlers at 172 and 189 lbs..

Friday morning, the Lancers took on a very talented Council Rock South team in the first consolation round. Council Rock was coming off a disappointing 28-23 loss to #6 Greater Latrobe and most likely felt they had something to prove. The Lancers never got any traction in the match. Council Rock took the first four bouts before GM was able to answer. McLane got their first win from Hudson Spires at 138 lbs. Spires was trailing 2-0 in the second period, when his opponent attempted to stand up. Spires chin whipped him, took him to his back and got the fall. Only two other McLane wrestlers would pull off wins in the match.

Jessi Stempka just missed posting a tech fall with a 16-3 major decision over Theo Christian at 189. Wilson Spires took his man down in 8 seconds and then got the fall at the 0:31 second mark. Magnus Lloyd had a tough draw in Matt Colajezzi. Colajezzi is the top ranked 160 pounder in the state and placed 4th at last year's state tournament. Magnus wrestled well but came out on the short end of a 4-1 decision. Teige Berger also wrestled well but dropped a close, 4-2 decision at 106 lbs.

The post season will begin for the GM wrestlers at the District 10 AAA Tournament on Thursday, February 24th in Meadville.

Notes: The team finishes the 2021-22 dual meet campaign with a 10-11 overall record. This will mark the first time a McLane wrestling team has finished below .500 since the 1997-98 team finished the season with a 6-9 record under former coach, Tim Mulholland.

This will also mark the first time in 18 seasons that a Ryan Cook coached team has finished below .500. But I'm certain that winning the District 10 AAA team title and making the trip to Hershey will take a lot of the sting out of it. Coach Cook has recorded a 225-85 overall dual meet record over his 18 seasons as head coach. That's an amazing, 72.58 winning percentage!

Wilson Spires' record now stands at 32-3 and he has recorded 19 falls. Spires racked up 34 wins during his freshman year and should easily eclipse that number before this season is in the books. Wil also leads the team with 55 takedowns!!! Magnus Lloyd became the second GM wrestler to reach the 30 win mark. His record stands at 30-7.

IMHO, this team has improved more over the course of one season than any GM team I can remember. I'm sure they will be battle ready for the post season!

Results from the 2021-22 PIAA Team Duals Championships: AA 1. Saucon Valley 2. Notre Dame Green Pond 3. Chestnut Ridge 4. Boiling Springs. AAA 1. Bethlehem Catholic 2. Nazareth 3. Waynesburg 4. Williamsport.

GM SECURES 10TH DUAL WIN OVER EISENHOWER

The McLane wrestling team finally crept over the .500 mark on Monday evening when they trounced visiting Eisenhower, 59-10. It's the first time the Lancers have sported a winning record since the Hampton Duals during first week of the wrestling season in December. A tough schedule, along with sickness and injuries have hampered the team all year. But they finally put together a healthy team last week at the D10 Team Duals and have been a force to reckon with ever since.

Eisenhower took the lead out of the gate when the Knights' Gannon Jaquay won by major decision over Jarod Peyton at 152, but it was short lived. The Lancers responded with three straight bonus point wins. Daniel Mulligan won by 11-2 major decision at 160 lbs., Magnus Lloyd racked up his 10th fall of the year at 172 and Brandon Dedrick posted a 12-0 major at 189. Eisenhower won by fall at 215 lbs. but that would be their last win of the night.

At 285 lbs., Wilson Spires pinned his opponent in the first period but not before he put on a takedown clinic even Hayden Harrison would be impressed with. Spires took his foe to the mat five times in less a minute before finishing him off at the 1:17 mark! Teige Berger added another pin at 106 and Ethan Snyder won a hard fought, 12-6 decision at 113. Eisenhower forfeited the next four bouts and then Kyle Cousins wrapped it up with another pin at 145 lbs.

The team will be back in action in Hershey on Thursday, February 10th at the PIAA Team Dual Championships. The Lancers will face 15th ranked Central Dauphin in the first round. Central Daughin was the second place team out of District 3 and they sport a 10-1 record. Needless to say, the Big Red Machine will have their hands full.

Notes: Wilson Spires became the first GM wrestler to make it to the 30 win mark for the season. He also leads the team with 18 falls and incredibly, leads the team in takedowns. This may be the first time in McLane history a heavyweight has lead the team in takedowns! Magnus Lloyd is close behind Spires with 29 W's and Teige Berger is third with 25.

A big CONGRATS to Coach Ryan Cook. Monday's victory over Eisenhower marked his 225th head coaching win!!! This is Coach Cook's 18th season as head coach and he did a three year stint as assistant coach under Tim Mulholland. As a head coach, Ryan Cook has averaged 13+ wins per season. In total, Cook has posted a 225-83 overall record (through the Eisenhower dual meet).

Monday was Senior Night! The following senior wrestlers and their parents were honored before the match - Jared Peyton, Dan Mulligan, Brandon Dedrick, Russell Wismer and Austin Henry. Congratulations and best of luck in all of your future endeavors!

GM WRESTLERS UPSET PREP TO
WIN DISTRICT 10 AAA TEAM TITLE!

In what may have been the biggest upset since McLane won their first NW Regional title in 2004, the Lancers came from behind to defeat six time defending champ, 12th ranked, Cathedral Prep in the finals of the 2021-22 District 10 Team Duals last night at Prep's rec center. Trailing by a score of 25-0, the Lancers came screaming back to defeat the Ramblers, 39-29.

The Lancers, who came into last night's fray with a humble, 7-9 record, have been hampered by sickness and injuries all year. In fact, they dropped a 40-30 decision to the 9-1 Ramblers in early January. But last night, Ryan Cook's team finally came together and showed how good they really are when they're healthy. The return of Jessi Stempka, who bumped up a weight class and pinned state ranked, Kelyn Blossey was a key turning point in the match, as was 160 pounder, Dan Mulligan's hard fought, 7-4 win over Owen Shetler. And Brandon Dedrick's 3rd period pin at 189 can't be overlooked for keeping the fire burning during the Lancers' closing, six bout win streak!

Prep started off looking like they would once again repeat as D10 champs when they won the first five bouts, three by fall, and took a 25-0 lead. Jacob Zeiser got a forfeit win for the Lancers at 145 but then the Ramblers struck again when they scored a technical fall at 152. Prep appeared to be in the driver's seat at that point with a commanding 30-6 lead. But then the Lancers upper weights kicked it into overdrive!

Dan Mulligan pulled out the first of six consecutive McLane wins by beating Owen Shetler, 7-4 at 160. Prep then forfeited to Magnus Lloyd at 172, which closed the gap to 30-15. Brandon Dedrick kept the ball rolling with his third period pin of Issiah Harrick, closing the gap to 30-21. Then came Jessi Stempka's huge upset of highly ranked, Kelyn Blossey at 215. Stempka not only upset Blossey, he decked him and pulled the Lancers to within three points. Wilson Spires put GM ahead for the first time and for good when he pinned Caden Pustalek in 1:02. Prep had no 113 pounder and they opened the match by sending their 106 pounder out to wrestler Ethan Snyder at 113. That left them with no one to send out for the last bout, giving Teige Berger a forfeit and nailing the Lancer victory down!

Notes: Even though the team came into last night's match with a 7-9 record - they have shown flashes of brilliance off and on all season, in spite of the fact that they haven't been at 100% strength. Of their 9 losses, 7 of them came at the hands of state ranked teams - #12 Fort LeBoeuf, #14 Quaker Valley, #15 Forest Hills, # 19 Mount Pleasant , #25 AA Canton, #12 Cathedral Prep and # 20 Butler. And five of those nine losses came by seven points or less. But their 4th place finish at the Fred Bell Tournament and the 30-27 upset win over 9th ranked, Hempfield showed flashes of what they were capable of even when not at full strength!

Wilson Spires' win against Prep was his 29th of the year. He also leads the team with 17 pins. Wilson owns 52 career pins, which ties him with Lou Decker for 14th place on the all-time list, and he still has the rest of this season and next season to add to that total. He needs just 20 more to tie Caleb Baker for the top spot! Magnus Lloyd is second with 28 victories this year and Teige Berger has 24. Hudson Spires has racked up 14 pins!

The last time GM advanced to the PIAA AAA Team Duals was during the 2014-15 season. They went 1-2 (1st round: Council Rock South 31 General McLane 27, Consolations: General McLane 29 Spring Ford 25, Consolations: Parkland 37 General McLane 33). The team's full team duals history can be found here.

The GM wrestlers will be back in action on Monday, January 7th against Eisenhower at home for Senior Night. Then the Lancers will head to Hershey on February 10th where they'll face the second place team from District 3 in the opening round.
