LLOYD NABS
THIRD STRAIGHT DISTRICT 10 TITLE
EIGHT GM WRESTLERS ADVANCE
Magnus
Lloyd ran off four straight wins this weekend and won
his third consecutive District 10 title. Lloyd dominated
the 189 lbs. field until he reached the finals. He pinned
his first two opponents and easily dispathed Seneca's state
ranked, Ryan Miller, 9-2 in the semifinals. Magnus was tested
in the 189 lbs. finale by another state ranked wrestler,
Corry's Ethan Allen, who had defeated him, 11-6 in last
week's section final. Neither wrestler was able to score
in the first period, although Lloyd had to fight his way
out of two near takedown attempts. Allen chose bottom in
the second period and scored a reversal early on to take
a 2-0 lead. Magnus escaped to make it, 2-1. The turning
point came with 1:30 to go in the second period when Magnus
hit a quick, unexpected duck under and took a 3-2 lead.
Allen chose the optional start in the last stanza, which
gave Lloyd a 4-2 edge that he was able to maintain until
the buzzer sounded.
Wilson
Spires also made the finals before falling to Sharon's
9th ranked, Mike Mazurek by a score of 4-2. Neither of them
was able to score in the opening period. Mazurek escaped
early in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. In the third,
Spires hit a nice granby roll and spun behind his opponent
to take a brief 2-1 lead. About 45 seconds later, Mazurek
escaped to tie it up again. The difference in the match
came with just 20 seconds left when Spires almost took Mazurek
down at the edge of the mat with a single leg - but Mazurek
sprawled and spun behind to seal the win. In all, eight
GM wrestlers made the cut and advanced to next week's NW
Regional Tournament, which will be held in Sharon. The team
finished 3rd with 141 points, just behind Reynolds (146.5)
and Fort LeBoeuf (178).
Hudson
Spires and Chance Kimmy took 3rd place, Kyle
Cousins was 4th, Clay Kimmy and Ryan Dedrick
took 5th and Teige Berger was 8th. Chance
went 5-1, his lone loss came at the hands of 4th ranked,
Collin Hearn of Conneaut. Kimmy lost to Hearn in the quarterfinals
and then rattled off three straight wins to make the consi
finals. Hudson Spires also suffered just a single
defeat in the tournament to state ranked, Cody Hamilton
(8th) of Grove City, by a 6-2 count. He bounced back, beating
LeBoeuf's Jackson Bowers by fall and scored a 14-2 major
decision over Corry's Cody Proper in the third place match.
Kyle Cousins also made the consolation finals. He
suffered losses to state place winner, Story Buchanan in
the semifinal round and then in the consi finals to state
ranked, Caullin Summers of Sharpsville. All three of Kyle's
wins were pins!
Clay
Kimmy went 4-2 with three pins on his way to a 5th place
finish. Both of Clay's defeats also came at the hands of
state ranked wrestlers, Sebastian Chiesa of Northwestern
and Grove City's Hudson Hohman. Ryan Dedrick went
4-2 and also took 5th place in the 215 lbs.weight class.
Dedrick was responsible for a fair amount of GM's bonus
points. In his four wins he scored 3 major decisions and
1 fall. Rounding out the McLane place winners was Teige
Berger, who went 2-3. Berger squeezed out a close, 3-1
win in the opening round and a 9-1 major decision over Corry's
Isaiah Bayle the second consolation round.
The
team will be back in action this weekend for the Northwest
Regional AA Tournament in Sharon. The top four wrestlers
in each weight class will advanced to the state championships
in Hershey.
News
and Notes:
Magnus
Lloyd won his third straight district title this weekend
and THAT was a rare accomplishment. Only four other McLane
wrestlers have pulled off that feat in the past 60 years.
Bill Kirdahy (1978-1981), Shawn Trapp (1998-2001),
Hayden Harrison (2001-2004) and Jackson Spires
(2018-2021).
Magnus won AAA titles in 2021 and 2022 in addition to this
year's AA crown!
Wilson
Spires decked Brian White of Sharpsville in the quarterfinals
for his 72nd career fall. That pin tied him with
Caleb Baker for the most career pins in GM history!
Spires now also has 111 career wins. That tied him with
two time state place winner, Greg Leehan for 17th
place on the all time list!
Three
other Lancer grapplers found their way into the GM record
book this weekend. Chance Kimmy went 5-1 and entered
the 33+ win club. Over the past 60 years only one
wrestler (on average) makes that list per year. Kimmy's
record now stands at 35-10. Chance and Ryan Dedrick
also both made it into the GM record book with 20 pins each
this season. Freshman, Clay Kimmy has 18 pins this
year and that places him in the #4 spot for 'Freshman Falls.'

WILSON AND
HUDSON SPIRES WIN
SECTION ONE TITLES
Brothers,
Hudson and Wilson Spires both won Section
One titles this weekend in Meadville. Both wrestlers not
only went 3-0 - they pinned their way through the tournament!
Magnus Lloyd also made the finals but lost a close
one in the 189 pound finale. In all, 11 of 13 McLane wrestlers
placed in the top seven and will advance to next weekend's
district tournament. Kyle
Cousins, Chance Kimmy, Jessi Stempka and
Ryan Dedrick all fought their way to 3rd place finishes.
Clay Kimmy and Teige Berger took 4th, Derek
Dube was 5th, Landon Harnett 6th and Dom Snyder
8th. The team took runnerup honors behind PIAA Team Duals
runnerup, Fort LeBoeuf.
Hudson
Spires pinned Lloyd Fountain of Northwestern in the
quarterfinal round, followed that up by decking LeBoeuf's
25th ranked, Jackson Bowers in the semis and then pinned
Titusville's Gavin Donaldson in the 145 pound finals. Wilson
Spires also racked up 3 falls in the tourney. He dispatched
Bryce Watkins in just 36 seconds in the quarters and made
short work of Girard's Zach Baldwin in the finals at the
49 second mark. In the semifinal round, Spires took on John
Duran of Fort LeBoeuf. Wilson had a tough time with Duran
at the team duals, barely pulling off a last second, 4-2
decision. But in the section finale, he surprisingly finished
Duran off with a second period pin. Magnus Lloyd
pinned Harborcreek's Sam Kightlinger at 1:02 in the opening
round, then made the finals when he shut out Seneca's Ryan
Miller, 13-0 in the semis. But in the finals, Lloyd lost
a hard fought, 11-6 contest to Corry's Ethan Allen.
Jessi
Stempka won 3 of 4 at the tournament with all 3 of those
victories coming by way of fall. His only loss in the tourney
was to Titusville's 11th ranked, Brock Covell in the semifinal
round. Kyle Cousins went 4-1. His lone loss came
at the hands of Girard's 5th ranked, Story Buchanan, who
went on to win the 152 pound title. Ryan Dedrick
went 3-1, suffering a single loss to state ranked, (#2)
Danny Church of Fort LeBoeuf in 215 pound the semifinals.
Dedrick pulled off a hard fought, 4-3 decision over Corry's
Kael Albers in the consolation finals. Rounding out GM's
3rd placers was Chance Kimmy, who also posted a 3-1
record. Kimmy suffered his lone loss by a score of 7-4,
at the hands of second placer, Clay Thomas of Union City.
Clay
Kimmy and Teige Berger also made the consolation
finals and both wrestlers had the misfortune of losing to
the same opponent twice. Kimmy lost to state ranked, Sebastian
Chiesa of Northwestern in the quarterfinal round and again
in the consi final. Berger lost to state ranked Noah Cuic
of Fort LeBoeuf in the quarterfinals and in the consolation
finals as well. Freshman, Derek Dube advanced to
districts after winning 4 of 6 at sections. Dube lost in
the quarterfinal round and again in the consolation semis,
but bounced back with a win by fall in the 5th place match.
Landon Harnett was the other GM wrestler to qualify
for districts. Harnett went 2-3 and placed 6th. Dom Snyder
took 8th and came up just short of moving on.
The
team will be back in action this weekend in Sharon, PA in
the District 10 AA Tournament.
-------------------
News
and Notes:
Kudos
to Freshman, Derek Dube for a great section tournament.
Derek didn't find a regular spot in the lineup until mid
January and had a 3-6 record at one point. He's looked very
good for the past month or so, even in his losses to seasoned
wrestlers. He's gradually improved his record to 14-14 overall,
with a 4-2 effort this weekend. BTW, Dube's 4 wins were
all by fall.
Wilson
Spires also looked very good this weekend. He went 3-0
with 3 falls, one of those over a very good Fort LeBoeuf
wrestler. He finally made it to the 20 win mark, after sitting
out a good part of the early season with injuries. The big
story is that his 3 pins this weekend were numbers 69, 70
and 71. Wilson needs just one more pin to tie Caleb Baker
for the GM career record! He also has 109 career wins! Kyle
Cousins now has 49 falls - good enough for 17th place
on the career falls list.
With
his 3 wins in Meadville, Chance Kimmy became the
first GM wrestler to reach the 30 win mark. Chance has a
very respectable 30-9 record! Kyle Cousins has 27
wins and Hudson Spires 26. Ryan Dedrick leads
the team with 19 falls this season!
This
is the third section tournament for the Lancers in the past
five years. They placed 2nd behind Corry in 2020 and won
the tournament in 2019. The team had to bump up to AAA for
two years and then came back to AA this season. The team
had 3rd and 4th place finishes at the 2019 and 2020 District
10 AA tournaments respectively. Hopefully the Lancers will
find their way on to the top of the heap this coming weekend.

GM UPSETS
GREENVILLE - LOSES TO LEBOEUF
AT DISTRICT 10AA TEAM DUALS
After
beating North East, 51-17 in last week's D10 AA Duals first
round, the 6th seeded, GM wrestling team pulled off a 40-28
upset over #3 seed, Greenville in the quarterfinals
on Saturday in Sharon. McLane won the first six bouts and
shot out to a 28-0 lead before the Trojans even got on the
board. It was 40-9 after Teige Berger pinned Noah
Cristner in the 127 lbs. contest. GM forfeited the last
three weight classes to rest their starters for the semifinals.
Jessi Stempka, Clay Kimmy and Teige Berger
all pinned their Greenville opponents. Magnus Lloyd
added a major decision at 189 pounds. Kyle Cousins
and Chance Kimmy ground out wins by decision to give
GM a 6-0 lead out of the gate.
In
the semis, the Lancers ran into a solid, 7th ranked Fort
LeBoeuf team. LeBoeuf crushed Sharpsville in the quarters,
57-12. Chance Kimmy opened the match with a close,
4-2 win over Dominic Stearns at 160. The two teams traded
wins over the next four bouts and the team score was tied
at 9-9, but it was all LeBoeuf after that as they ran off
six straight wins. Magnus Lloyd won a 3-2 decision
over Ryan Welka at 189 and Wilson Spires scored a
come from behind, 4-2 decision over John Duran at heavyweight.
Hudson Spires and Kyle Cousins picked up forfeits
in the last two weight classes after Fort LeBoeuf had clinched
it.
In
the finals, Reynolds beat Fort LeBoeuf, 38-28. LeBoeuf will
face the District 7-4th place team, Frazier at Fort LeBoeuf
on February 6th. Reynolds will take on the District 1-1st
place team, Faith Christian in Hershey on February 9th.
The
team will now have two weeks to get ready for the Section
1-AA Championships in Meadville on February 17th
and 18th. Wrestling will start at 3:45 PM on Friday
with the finals set for Saturday after the Parade of Champions
at 5:30 PM. Participating teams: Corry, Youngsville,
Eisenhower, Union City, Warren, Seneca, General McLane,
Fort LeBoeuf, Harborcreek, Girard, Northwestern and North
East. The top two finishers in each weight class will advance
to districts.

News
and Notes:
GM's
win over Greenville surprised a lot of people. Greenville
came into the fray with a 19-2 record and were regarded
as the favorite over McLane. The upset of the Trojans ranks
up there as one of the sweetest dual meet wins of the year!
The
Lancers finished the dual meet season with a very respectable
10-5 record. It's worth noting that all five of those losses
came at the hands of state ranked teams (Brookville-8th,
Fort LeBoeuf-6th, Montoursville-22nd and Canton-23rd). They
also had wins over a couple of very tough teams (Hickory-last
years AA Team Duals Champ and Greenville). It's also worth
noting that nearly all of the Lancers' wins were accomplished
with 2 or 3 starters out of the lineup. This weekend marked
the first time since the beginning of the season that the
team had all of their starters available.
Chance
Kimmy leads the team with 27 wins. Brother, Clay
has 23, Hudson Spires and Kyle Cousins also
have 23, Ryan Dedrick has 22 and Magnus Lloyd
is at 21. Ryan Dedrick is in the 'pins' top spot
with 18. With his two victories at the D10 Duals, Wilson
Spires has 106 career wins and moved up to a tie for
19th place with Cyrus Parlin on the GM All Time Career
Wins list. Wilson also has 68 career pins. Kyle Cousins
also made the GM wrestling books. Cousins has 48 career
pins - that ties him for 19th place with Chad DeForce,
Hudson Harrison and Kyle Goss.

GM KNOCKS
OFF GRAPEPICKERS
IN 1ST ROUND OF D10 AA DUALS
The
McLane wrestling team knocked off North East at home in
the first round of the District 10AA Team Duals, 51-17.
It was the first time this season the team has had all 13
starters available and it showed. The Lancers won nine of
thirteen bouts, including four straight at the beginning
and three in a row at the end. Out of those nine W's, seven
were won by fall and one by forfeit. Derek Dube,
who's been wrestling very well lately, pulled out a 7-5
win in OT, in the only close bout of the evening. Dube was
leading 5-0 but got caught in a headlock late in the match
and regulation ended with the score knotted at 5. Rather
than let it take the steam out of him, Derek shot in almost
immediately and took his opponent to the mat with a nice
double leg takedown.
Magnus
Lloyd, Wilson Spires, Dom Snyder, Clay
Kimmy, Kyle Cousins, Chance Kimmy and
Jessi Stempka all secured pins. Ryan Dedrick
took a forfeit at 215 for GMs other win. Since the team
had a commanding lead, Coach Cook opted to rest Hudson
Spires, who suffered a slight injury at last weekend's
Fred Bell Tournament. Jessi Stempka and Magnus Lloyd were
both back in the lineup and looked like well oiled machines.
It was the second time the Lancers beat North East this
year. They beat the Grapepickers, 43-27 back in December
without Jessi Stempka and Wilson Spires.
The
win advanced the sixth seeded Lancers into the quarterfinal
round of the team duals. They will face #3 seed, Greenville
on Saturday at 9 AM at Sharon High School. Also advancing
to the quarterfinal round with wins last night, were #9
Grove City, #5 Corry and #10 Sharpsville. The quarterfianl
round looks like this: #1 Reynolds, vs #9 Grove City,
#4 Commodore Perry vs #5 Corry, #2 Fort LeBoeuf vs #10 Sharpsville
and #3 Greenville vs #6 General McLane.
--------------------
News
and Notes:
Chance
Kimmy leads the tream with 25 wins and is tied with
Ryan Dedrick with 17 pins. Kimmy and Dedrick need three
more falls to make the GM Wrestling Record Book! Kyle
Cousins leads the pack with 44 takedowns. Freshman,
Clay Kimmy has 23 wins, just two behind his brother.
The
McLane wrestling team has made a total of 19 appearances
in the District 10 Duals since 2001-02. The first two were
under Coach Tim Mulholland. The team won their first
D10 AAA Duals title under Mulholland in 2002-03. Since Ryan
Cook took over as head coach in 2004-05, the team has
made 16 appearances in the District 10 Duals, 13 in AAA
and 3 in AA. Cook's teams won 3 AAA titles over that span
and a 3rd place AA (state qualifying) finish in 2019-20.
Cook was also an assistant coach during those first two
McLane appearances.
Of
the eight teams in the weekend's upcoming duals, four are
state ranked. Fort LeBoeuf is 9th, General McLane is
19th, Corry 22nd and Reynolds 23rd. Saturday should
be an exciting day with some great wrestling!
