LLOYD AND DEDRICK WIN DISTRICT TITLES

For the second straight week Magnus Lloyd and Ryan Dedrick stood at the top of a post season podium. Both wrestlers won section crowns last week and repeated the feat at district this past weekend! In addition, Lloyd's win in the finals made GM wrestling history, when he became the first GM wrestler in the history of the program to win four District 10 titles. The team took runner up honors behind Reynolds, edging LeBoeuf by a point and a half. Eight McLane wrestlers placed in the top eight, which qualified them for next week's regional tournament.

Magnus Lloyd went 3-0 on the weekend and easily cruised into the finals. He scored technical falls in his first two bouts, winning 15-0 in the quarterfinals and 16-0 in the semis. Magnus met a worthy opponent in the finals - Fort LeBoeuf's 7th ranked, Conner McChesney, who came into the tourney unbeaten on the mat, sporting a 20-1 record. The only blemish on his record was a forfeit loss to Lloyd in last week's section finale. Neither wrestler was able to score during the first period. McChesney chose bottom in the second period and Lloyd took advantage with his strength. Early in the period, Magnus trapped McChesney's arm, put on a tight gut wrench and tilted the Bison to take a 2-0 lead. McChesney finally escaped to make the score 2-1. Lloyd matched that escape in the final period and hung on for a 3-1 decision.

Ryan Dedrick also went three for three. He scored a 15-5 major decision in the quarterfinals and then topped Harborcreek's state ranked, Sam Kightlinger, 3-0 in the semifinals. He faced off against 7th ranked, Teague Calvin of Greenville in the finals. Calvin caught Dedrick out of position at mat's edge near the end of the first period, body locked him and took him to his back. That gave Calvin a 4-0 lead. Dedrick was able to wear Calvin down a bit by riding him for nearly 1 1/2 minutes in the second stanza, but Calvin finally escaped to take a commanding, 5-0 lead. Ryan escaped quickly in the final period to make it 5-1, but he wasn't able to penetrate Calvin's defenses for the next minute and time was running out. With 50 seconds on the clock, Dedrick hit a high crotch, switched to a double and took Calvin to the mat. That cut the deficit to 5-3. Dedrick cut him loose to make it 6-3. The odds were against him since he was still down 3 points, but with 25 seconds remaining, Ryan attempted that high crotch again. He was in deep but it failed, so he smartly decided to back out. Just as he was backing off, Calvin relaxed just a little. Dedrick came up in one smooth, flawless motion, locked up on Calvin's upper body and hit a perfect lateral drop for a fiver! He was able to run out the clock for an 8-6, come from behind victory!

Hudson Spires was GMs other finalist. Spires fought and clawed his way into the finals in what may have been the deepest weight class in the tournament. He opened with a win by fall and then narrowly defeated two straight state ranked wrestlers. He sneaked past #24, Mitchell Tingley, 7-5 with a late reversal and back points and then followed that with a 6-4 overtime win over 10th ranked, Section 2 champ, Vito Gentile of Reynolds! Unfortunately, Hudson couldn't get past #6, JoJo Przybycien of Fort LeBoeuf in the finals.

Peter Sadchikov may have had the most notable performance at districts with his 3rd place finish. Last week, the 145 lbs. sophomore finished 5th at sections after suffering a couple of unfortunate, one point defeats. At sections, Sadchikov dropped a 1-0 decision to Girard's Riley Horn and a 4-3 decision to Cody Proper of Corry. Peter turned the tables on not one, but three wrestlers at the district tournament. He nipped Proper 6-4 in OT in the consi quarters and then beat Horn, 8-4 in the consolation finals. In between those two paybacks, Sadchikov upset state ranked Jackson Bowers of Fort LeBoeuf, 3-1 in the consi semi round! Bowers had beaten Peter, 4-2 the dual meet between GM and FLB in January.

Chance Kimmy was GMs other 3rd placer. Kimmy went 4-1 with a pin and a major decision. He also got past state ranked, Zac Tuberville, 8-5 in the quarterfinal round. His only loss in the tournament came against last year's state place winner, Cody Hamilton of Grove City, who came into the tournament with just 2 losses in 38 bouts. In the consolation finals, Chance defeated Tuberville, 4-1 for the second time.

Ben Watkins also wrestled tough this weekend. Watkins went 4-2, good enough for 4th place. He lost by decision to Sharpsville's Josh Divens in the quarterfinals, but pulled off a 3-1 upset over LeBoeuf's 11th ranked Ryan Welka in the consolation semifinals. Watkins lost by fall to state ranked Louie DeJulia of Reynolds in the 3rd place match.

Clay Kimmy placed 4th at 133 lbs. He went 4-2 with two major decisions. Both of Kimmy's losses came at the hands of a very tough, Hudson Hohman of Grove City, who was 4th at the state tourney last year. Ethan Snyder rounded out the GM medalists. He went 2-3 and qualified for regionals with an 8th place finish at 127 lbs.

The Lancers will be back in action on March 1st and 2nd at the NW Regional AA Tournament in Sharon. The top 4 placers will advance to the PIAA Championships in Hershey, March 7th-9th.

News and Notes:

Clay Kimmy hit the 30 win plateua with his four victories. Clay also had two majors to bring his season total to 8. Only seven GM wrestlers have racked up more than 8 major decisions in a single season. He also broke the 20 year old 'season escapes' record last week with 61.

Chance Kimmy ran his season win total to 35 and made the 'season wins' list. Chance also registered his 24th fall at districts. That ties him with two other former GM wrestlers for 7th place on the all-time list. Kimmy also has 63 career pins - 5th best of all time. Chance moved his career win total to 105.

Magnus Lloyd became the first McLane wrestler to ever win four District 10 titles. Magnus won his first two tiltes in AAA and the second two in AA. With his three wins at districts, Lloyd ran his career total to 121. That moved him up to number 8 on the all-time list. Sadly, Magnus lost the opportunity at several more career wins during the pandemic shortened season of 2020-21. Had it not been for that unfortunate year of missed oppotunities, Lloyd could very well have been challenging Ethan Laird for the top spot of 138. Lloyd had two tech falls this weekend, taking his career total to 13. That puts him in 2nd place, behind Keller Watkins, who holds the record that may never be broken with an eye popping 51.

Some Magnus Lloyd Trivia: In district tournaments over the last four years, Magnus posted an overall record of 11 wins - 0 losses. Of those 11 wins, 4 were technical falls and 3 were pins. If you add in his two section tournaments, his overall record is 16 wins - 1 loss. Of those 17 matches, Lloyd had 6 pins, 4 technical falls and a major decision. BTW, his one loss at the 2023 section tournament was an 11-6 defeat at the hands of Corry's Ethyn Allen in the finals. Magnus avenged the defeat the following week with a 4-2 win over Allen at districts. He then went on to place 2nd at regionals and 6th at the state tournament!

Ryan Dedrick is also moving up the chart for season wins. He has racked up 35 this season. Ben Watkins became the 3rd member of the team's 20 pin club this year. His two pins at districts ran his total to 20!

Hudson Spires looked better this weekend than any time during the season. He showed a lot of character the way he kept his poise in both overtime matches against ranked wrestlers. His loss in the finals was nothing to be ashamed of. Fort LeBoeuf senior, JoJo Przybycien is pound for pound, one of the strongest wrestlers I saw in that tournament and he has some moves! In fact, 160 lbs. may have been the deepest weight class in the tournament with no less than nine state ranked wrestlers battling it out!

And lastly, you have to love these quotes given to the Erie Times by Magnus Lloyd and Ryan Dedrick following their wins in the district finals. Both wrestlers were referring to their finals matches----

“That’s where I make my living, on your wrists riding like that,” Lloyd said of his decisive tilt. “That’s where I wanted to be. It was just perfect. I love riding and little tilts like that… It was exactly my bread and butter.”
-Magnus Lloyd

“It was a lateral drop – something I don’t really train very often, but I try to keep myself in the match and I know I have those moves when it’s there. “I shot in, came out with that tie-up, and felt it there. Thirty seconds left and I’ve got to go for it, so that’s what happened and it worked out in my favor.”
-Ryan Dedrick

DEDRICK AND LLOYD WIN SECTION TITLES

Ryan Dedrick and Magnus Lloyd both won titles in their respective weight classes on Saturday in Meadville. Dedrick started the tournament with a 55 second pin and then knocked off the #3 seed, Jack Sangl of LeBoeuf, by a score of 3-1 in the semifinal round. In the finals, Dedrick took charge from the beginning with a couple of early takedowns and cruised to an 8-4 decision over #1 seed, Kael Albers of Corry. Magnus Lloyd made his way into the finals with two first period pins, the second one against the #3 seed, Kaleb Brunst of Titusville. Lloyd was slated to take on top seed, unbeaten Conner McChesney of Fort LeBoeuf in the finals, but McChesney forfeited the match. But the two wrestlers could very well clash next week at Districts.

Chance Kimmy and Hudson Spires also made it into the finals but lost their final bouts. Spires had a couple of pins to open the tournament. He was scheduled to wrestle top seed, two time state qualifier, Story Buchanan of Girard in the semis, but Buchanan became ill just before the bout and had to forfeit. Spires fell in the finals to # 2 seed, two time state place winner, JoJo Przybycien of Fort LeBoeuf', by a score of 5-0.

Kimmy had an opening round bye and then won by fall over North East's Michael McGrath for his 100th career win! He followed that up with by pinning #3 seed, Lamech Albers of Corry in 1:15 in the semifinal round. Unfortunately, Chance got caught in a crazy scramble in the first period and lost by fall in the finale. Hopefully he'll get a chance to turn the tables at next week's district tournament.

Clay Kimmy, Lukas Kuffer and Ben Watkins nabbed 3rd place finishes. All three wrestlers went 3-1 in the tournament. Kimmy and Kuffer's defeats both came at the hands of the #1 seeds. Watkins fell to the #2 seed. Josh Caro went 3-2 and took 4th at 121 lbs. Caro lost his first match to the #1 seed, but then bounced back with three straight wins to guarantee himself a spot on the podium. Also placing for the Lancers were, Peter Sadchikov (5th), Ethan Snyder (6th), Dan Topel (6th) and Dom Snyder (7th). All twelve wrestlers will advance to next weekend's District 10 AA Tournament in Sharon.

The McLane wrestling team just missed a second place finish in the Section 1 Tournament. They were nipped by Corry by a mere 1/2 point for the runnerup spot! The Lancers finished 2nd behind LeBoeuf at last year's tournament.

The GM wrestlers will be back in action next Friday and Saturday at the District 10 AA Tournament in Sharon. Hopefully the Lancers can at least match their 3rd place finish from the 2023 tournament.

News and Notes:

Chance Kimmy made it into the 100 win club! He now has 101 career wins - tying him with former GM state champ, Phil Frndak for 28th on that list! Kimmy also has 62 career pins -that ties him with Shawn Trapp for 6th place on the all time list. Kimmy leads the team with 23 falls this season - that ties him with Hayden Harrison, Caleb Baker and Wilson Spires for 9th place for 'season falls.'

Magnus Lloyd leads the team with 35 victories this year. That put him in the books for 'season wins.' It takes a minimum of 33 to qualify. Lloyd also ran his career win total to 118 - that ties him with Matt Leehan for the 11th spot on the all time list! Lloyd's two pins at sections ran his career total to 46. Only 27 GM wrestlers have registered 45 or more falls in their careers! With his two pins at sections, Magnus hit the 20 pin mark for the season as well.

Clay Kimmy set a new record during the section tournament! Kimmy had 11 escapes to run his season total to 61. That eclipsed the record of 55 set by Travis Goss in 2004-05 and matched by Tyler Bowers in 2007-08. I'm sure Clay will add even more to that total before his sophomore season ends! Congratulations!

Sophomore, Peter Sadchikov wrestled well and barely missed placing in the top three or four. Both of his defeats in the tourney were by a single point to the #1 and #3 seeds. Josh Caro also had a good weekend. He hung on in the consolation semifinals to beat the #3 seed, Ryan Fitzsimmons of Warren by a razor thin, 1-0 decision. That guaranteed the 121 pounder of a top four finish! Lukas Kuffer deserves a mention too - he was seeded 4th at 139 pounds and upset the #3 seed in the 3rd place match, 10-7.

LANCERS GO 1-1 AT DISTRICT 10AA TEAM DUALS

The McLane wrestling team wrapped up it's 2023-24 dual meet season at the District 10 AA Team Duals in Sharon, PA. on Saturday. The Lancers were victorious over 17th ranked, Greenville, 32-31 in the quarterfinal round, but then fell to the top seed and 5th ranked Reynolds Raiders, 38-22.

The Lancers shot out to a 13-0 lead against Greenville after wins by Magnus Lloyd, Ryan Dedrick and Luke Gray. The Trojans pulled to within 3 points (13-10) after back to back wins at 114 and 121 lbs., but that's as close as they would get. Ethan Snyder eked out a 2-1 decision over Greenville's Justin Perrino at 127 to get the ball rolling back in the right direction. Clay Kimmy followed up with pin of Josh Perrino to put GM out in front, 22-10.

Greenville won by fall at 139 lbs. to make the score, 22-16, but then a Peter Sadchikov pin at 145 and a Chance Kimmy major decision at 152 gave the Lancers a commanding, 32-16 lead. The Trojans would need bonus points in all of their last three bouts to pull off an upset at that point. Derek Dube made sure that didn't happen. Dube gave 14th ranked Rudy Gentile all he could handle, coming out on the short end of a very closely contested, 9-7 decision. That clinched it for the Lancers!

Reynolds rolled over McLane in the semifinal match, 38-22. The Lancers only won two bouts on the mat against the Raiders. Ryan Dedrick bumped up to 285 and scored a 10-0 major decision over a much heavier opponent. But the Lancers didn't win again until Lukas Kuffer pinned Kevyn Malgieri in the first period of their 145 lbs. bout. Clay Kimmy, Chance Kimmy and Derek Dube all lost close decisions to seasoned wrestlers after bumping up a weight class.

The GM wrestlers will get a couple of weeks to heal and fine tune their skills before the section tournament on February 16th and 17th in Meadville. The team has improved week by week this year - so expect the Lancers to vie for a section title!

Notes:

Magnus Lloyd added two more wins - bringing his career total to 115. He needs one more to tie former GM great, Tommy Kirdahy for 14th place. Lloyd also leads the team this season with a stellar, 32-4 won-loss record. Ryan Dedrick is close behind with 29 wins to his credit. Chance Kimmy still leads the team with 21 pins. Chance also has 99 career wins!

This year's wrestling team finished the season with a well earned 10-4 overall dual meet record. All four of of their losses came at the hands of state ranked teams (Chestnut Ridge, Fort LeBoeuf, Montoursville and Reynolds). They also scored wins over three state ranked teams (St. Marys, Port Allegany and Greenville). In addition, the Lancers were the Region 4 runnerup with a 4-1 record.
