EIGHT
LANCERS ADVANCE TO REGIONALS
Luke
Gray, Mason McDonald, Clay Kimmy,
Landon Harnett, Hudson Spires, Derek
Dube, Matt Caro and Conner Avery
all finished in the top eight and earned the right
to wrestle in next week's NW Regional Tournament
in Sharon. Though the Lancers did not have a
district champ this year, the eight regional qualifiers
matches last season's total.
Hudson
Spires was GM's lone finalist. He pinned his
first two opponents and then decisioned state ranked,
Zac Tuberville of Slippery Rock in a tough semifinal
bout. Hudson came out on the short end of a 5-1
decision in the finals to Cathedral Prep's 7th ranked,
Brandon Byrd. Clay Kimmy, who was the 145
lbs. section champ last week, took 3rd place. Clay
won his first match by technical fall, but then
suffered a wild, 12-9 defeat in the semis to 11th
ranked, Greyden Gustas of Reynolds. He bounced back
with win by medical forfeit and then ground out
a 3-0 decision over Greenville's state ranked, Josh
Perrino in the consi finals bout!
Luke
Gray, Derek Dube, Matt Caro and
Conner Avery all battled their way into the
consolation finals but suffered defeats in the consi
finale. Luke Gray scored two lopsided technical
falls before losing to 11th ranked, Van Ward of
Union City in the semis. Luke put himself in the
consi finals when he scored his third technical
fall over LeBoeuf's Carter Friday. He then dropped
a 4-1 decision to state ranked, Kael Kimmy of North
East. Derek Dube won by fall and then upset
17th ranked, Louie DeJulia of Reynolds in the quarterfinal
round. He lost by fall in the semis to Corry's 9th
ranked, Mason Savitz, who went on to win the 172
lbs. title. But Derek wasn't finished - he posted
another upset in the consolation semifinals over
Greenville's 18th ranked, Hunter Cox by a 3-0 count.
Derek lost in the 3rd place match to another state
ranked opponent, Sam Harrington of Cathedral Prep.
Matt
Caro took the long road to a 4th place finish.
He won by major decision in the opening round but
then fell to eventual 189 lbs. champ, 11th ranked,
Emery Johnson of Reynolds in the quarters. Matt
came roaring back with three straight victories
to make the consolation finals, before dropping
an 8-1 decision to LeBoeuf's state ranked, Aiden
Struchen. Conner Avery also took the #4 spot
on the podium. He went 3-2 with two of his three
of his wins being pins. His win by decision was
a big upset over state ranked, Stone Root of Sharon
in the quarterfinal round. Conner's losses were
both at the hands of state ranked heavyweights -
7th ranked and 285 lbs. district champ, John Duran
of Fort LeBoeuf in the semifinals and #23, Brian
White of Sharpsville in the consolation finals.
Mason
McDonald continued to add to his accomplished
freshman season with a 6th place finish at 127 lbs.
Mason went 3-3 with two wins by technical fall and
an upset of Fort LeBoeuf's 16th ranked Brady Bowers
in the consolation quarterfinals. All three of McDonald's
losses came at the hands of state ranked wrestlers.
127 may have been the most loaded weight class in
the tournament. All eight place winners were listed
in the state rankings. Landon Harnett was
GM's final regional qualifier. He went 2-3, squeaking
out a 10-7 decision over Brandon Hoover of Cambridge
Springs in the opener and another win by tech fall
when it counted, in the blood round.
The
GM crew of eight will be back in action next weekend
for the NW Regional AA Tournament in Sharon.
The Lancers finished 6th as a team last year, sending
five of their eight regional qualifiers on to the
state tournament.
Notes:
Hudson
Spires hasn't stalled in his bid to become the
number one pinner in McLane history. He had two
pins at districts to bring his career total to
75. He needs one more at either next week's
regional tournament or at the state tourney to at
least tie his brother, Wilson's record of 76. It
will be no easy task at this level but don't count
Hudson out! Spires also ran his career wins total
to 115 - 15th best on the all time list!
Hudson has never won a district title but he IS
a three time finalist (2022, 2024, 2025)
and he was a 3rd placer in 2023. Not many GM wrestlers
have credentials like that.
Clay
Kimmy ran his season wins total to a team leading
38 and his career total to 103. He
has managed to do one place higher at each of his
three distict tournament appearances. He was 5th
as a freshman, 4th as a sophomore and 3rd this year.
Hopefully he'll skip 2nd and go right to 1st next
season!
GM now has three members in the 20+ pins club.
Hudson Spires and Derek Dube have
21 stretch jobs each and Conner Avery got
his 19th and 20th pins this weekend! Spires
and Dube will also be entered (along with
Kimmy) into the books for season wins,
which is reserved for wrestlers who make it to 33+
W's for the season.
A
tip of the cap to Conner Avery and Matt
Caro. Conner didn't wrestle last year,
so the fact that he has 27 wins with 20
pins and is a regional qualifier is pretty amazing
and a testament to what hard work can accomplish!
Same for Matt. In his first two years, he
was in caught in weight classes with some of GM's
best wrestlers, so he only saw limited action. He
was 5-6 as a freshman and 7-6 last season. He finally
broke into the lineup full time this year and has
racked up 27 wins with 8 pins, 3 tech falls and
7 majors - and he's on his way to regionals!

KIMMY
NABS SECTION 1 TITLE
10 LANCERS ADVANCE
Clay
Kimmy won
his first section title this weekend and secured
his 100th career win in the process. Clay
won his first match by fall and followed up with
a 17-0 technical fall in the semifinal round.
He picked up an unexpected forfeit victory in
the finals over #1 seed, Gabe Dorman of Cathedral
Prep to hit the century mark!
Hudson
Spires placed 2nd at 160 lbs., pinning his
first opponent in the quarterfinals and then sqeaking
out a 6-5 decision over #3 seed, state ranked,
Lamech Albers in the semis. Unfortunately, Spires
injured his ankle during the finals match against
Prep's Brandon Byrd and was forced to forfeit.
It was Hudson's third appearance in the sectional
final - he won the 145 pound title in 2023.
Derek
Dube and Conner Avery both finished 3rd.
Dube won a lopsided 9-2 decision in the quarterfinals
but then fell to #1 seed, 8th ranked, Mason Savitz
of Corry. He bounced back in the consi semis with
a pin and then upset #3 seed, Titusville's JJ Miller
by a 4-0 count to secure 3rd place. Avery
took the hard road to the bronze. He came in as
the #11 seed and lost his first bout by fall to
#3, Owen Nickerson of Corry. But Conner went on
a tear after that loss. He posted three straight
pins, one of them in the consolation finals over
the #2 seed, Max Spaulding of Prep.
Luke
Gray and Matt Caro also made it into
the consi finals but lost their last bouts. Gray
pulled off an upset in the quarterfinals, over North
East's Kael Kimmy, 3-2, but then fell to top seed
and eventual champ, Sawyer Wolfkeil of Titusville.
He rebounded with a 17-0 technical fall to make
the consolation final but then came out on the short
end of a 4-1 decision in a rematch with Kimmy. Caro
came very close to making the finals. He won
his first two bouts, one of them over #3 seed, Kameron
Mong of Titusville. Matt then lost a 2-1 heart breaker
to Fort LeBoeuf's Aiden Struchen in the semis. He
won his next bout by fall to make the consolation
finals, but then dropped a 4-1 decision in a rematch
with Mong.
Mason
McDonald went 4-2 with two tech falls and a
pin. Mason nabbed the number 5 spot on the podium
when he upset #3 seed, Corry's Steven Willis, 2-0
in their placement bout. Lukas Kuffer, Landon
Harnett and Peter Sadchikov all placed
6th to advance to next week's district tournament.
Wes Simko and Ethan Snyder came up
just short of advancing, placing 8th in their respective
weight classes.
McLane
finished 5th as a team. The GM qualifiers will return
to action in next week's District 10AA Tournament
at Sharon High School.
Notes:
Congratulations
to junior, Clay Kimmy for winning the 145
lbs. title and reaching his 100th career win in
the finals. Clay became just the second wrestler
in GM history to reach #100 before his senior year.
Matt Leehan also hit career win #100 in the
2020 section tournament! Clay also made the books
for "season wins" for the second time.
A wrestler needs 33 or more to make that list and
Kimmy now has 35 on the year. Last year he finished
with 34 W's! Hadley Harrison (2006) still
holds that record with 48!!!
Derek
Dube entered the 20 pin club, just the 30th
GM wrestler to pin 20 or more opponents in a single
season. Travis Bryant (2011) and Kyle
Goss (2006) share the record of 28. Dube also
reached the 30 win mark for the season with his
victory in the 3rd place bout.
Hudson
Spires won twice this weekend to run his career
win total to 112. That ties him for 16th place on
the list with three other GM wrestlers (Branden
Stearns, Andrew Brest and Chris Laird).
Spires also holds 2nd place for career pins with
73. His brother, Wilson has the record of 76. Hudson
has 19 falls to his credit this season and his semifinal
victory was his 30th win this season!
After
missing the entire regular season due to an injury,
Peter Sadchikov made his first appearance
this year at the section tournament. Peter wrestled
well and managed to finish 6th, good enough to advance
to districts. He won two of his first three bouts
which got him into the quarterfinals. After losing
in the quarters he pulled out another win in the
consolation quarterfinals. That guaranteed him a
top six finish. He sat out the last two matches
to allow himself more recovery time. Sadchikov placed
5th at last year's section tournament but then placed
3rd at districts! He could prove to be a helpful
addition to the post season lineup.
A
tip of the cap to Wes Simko who won his first
varsity match by fall on Friday! The sophomore just
missed advancing to districts when he lost an 8-7
squeaker in the 7th place match.
Congratulations
to the Lady Lancers!
Ella Clark - District 10 - 2nd Place
Ashley Campbell - District 10 - 2nd Place
Whisper Abercrombie -District 10 - 2nd
Place
All three will represent General McLane at the Girl's
West Region Championships in 2 weeks!
Ashley Campbell became the first GM wrestler
to qualify for the girl's state tournament last
year! She posted a 23-10 record with 18 pins as
a junior. Campbell is 21-7 with 14 pins this
season and has a career record of 59-27.
Abercrombie is 26-9 this season with 22 pins
to her credit. Ella is 22-6 with 15 pins!

LANCERS
FALL IN D10 OPENER
The
GM wrestlers fell in the quarterfianal round of
the District 10AA Team Duals to state ranked,
North East, 39-25 on February 1st in Sharon. The
Lancers, with three of their starters unable to
wrestle, just weren't able to keep pace with the
talented North East squad. Dom Snyder, Ethan
Snyder and Hudson Spires were all sidelined
with injuries. It was the first time the McLane
wrestling team was defeated in the quarterfinal
round since the 2018-2019 season when they lost
to Conneaut, in a 30-28 sqeaker.
Jon
Rolland had the team's only pin at 189 lbs.
Derek Dube won by 18-1 technical fall at
172, Clay Kimmy (145) and Conner Avery
(285) both had major decisions and Mason McDonald
won by forfeit at 127. North East scored wins in
eight weight classes, including three falls.
Cathedral
Prep won the tournament with a 45-24 win over the
Grapepickers in the semifinals and then a 41-30
win over Corry in the finals. Prep and Corry both
advanced to the state team duals tournament.
The
GM wrestlers will be returning to the mats on February
14th and 15th in Meadville for the section championships.
Notes:
Clay
Kimmy's win against North East was his 32nd
of the season. Kimmy, just a junior, has 30+ wins
in each of his three wrestling seasons. He had 31
as a freshman, 34 last year and 32 so far this year.
His career total is now 97 and it looks like he's
on his way to becoming just the second GM wrestler
to hit 100 career wins before his senior year. Matt
Leehan reached 100 as a junior in the 2020 section
finals. Leehan finished his junior year with 106
career wins and had a shot at breaking Ethan
Laird's career win record of 137. Unfortunately
his senior season was upended by a shortened season
due to the pandemic and injuries. Hopefully Clay
will have a great senior year and challenge the
record!
