Branden Stearns Second at AAU Folkstyle Nationals
3 Other GM Wrestlers Medal

Branden Stearns became just the second General McLane wrestler to make the finals of the AAU Folkstyle Nationals tournament, Saturday in Detroit, MI. Stearns earned the runnerup spot, losing only to Ohio State Champion, Spencer Dye by a score of 10-5. Stearns won his opening round bout by 15-0 tech fall over Michigan's Dan Stevenson. His second round match against Ohio's Brett Thomas was a real nail biter. The two wrestlers exchanged takedowns and battled to a 4-4 tie. Stearns escaped with 15 seconds remaining in the bout to pull out a 5-4 win.

Branden won by fall over Michigan's Matt Sooy in the quarter-finals. In the semis, Stearns ran into Illinois' Luke Winterhalter, the 189 lbs. (Elite Division) defending National Champion. Winterhalter took Stearns down early in the opening period for a 2-0 lead. He appeared to be in control for most of the first period. But Branden reversed his opponent with 13 seconds remaining in the first to tie it at 2. Stearns then rattled off 5 unanswered points over the next two periods for a convincing 7-2 win. In the finals, Stearns gave up a first period takedown and found himself on the short end of a 4-2 score. Branden tried to escape in the second period, but Dye scored back points with a tilt to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Stearns tried to rally but Dye held on for the 10-5 win.

Eric Zelina put on a top-notch offensive performance Friday and Saturday. He placed 4th in the 125 lbs. Cadet Division and did it the hard way. He beat Ron Latimer of Michigan in the opening round. But then dropped a 12-3 major decision to Michigan's Adam Wilson in the second round. Zelina then proceeded to rattle off 5 straight wins (3 by fall), before losing to Ohio's Roshauer Jones in the consolation finals.

Joel Stearns and Keith Scharrer both placed 6th by winning their quater-finals matches. Stearns pinned Michigan's Juan Suarez in 3:32. Scharrer beat Michigan wrestler, Collin White, 12-9.

Donald Osinski went 2-2, losing one bout short of the medal rounds. Donald opened by pinning Michigan's Ryan Pino in 59 seconds. In the quarters, he ran into Michigan state champ, Jon Gruenberg. Osinski and Gruenberg battled evenly for a period and a half when Gruenberg caught Donald in a spladle and pinned him at the 3:08 mark. Osinski bouncerd back in the consolations with a pin over Jason Bothwell. He then lost his consy quater-finals bout to Illinois' Edward Domich.

Kyle Goss, Dale Sanders, Travis Goss and Louie Decker all went 1-2. Kyle's win was an 8-2 over decision over Fort LeBoeuf's Denton Sauers. It was the 3rd meeting between the two this season. Sauers won the first two.

Fort LeBoeuf entered 3 wrestlers in the contest, Denton Sauers, Wes Stull and Randy Smith. Sauers and Stull went 1-2. Smith was 0-2.

News and Notes:

Branden Stearns was impressive against three very tough opponents over the weekend. He beat Brett Thomas, a 3rd placer at the D-1 Ohio State Championships. He also decisioned the defending National Champ, Luke Winterhalter, 7-2 (Winterhalter was also an Illinois state tournament 3rd placer this season). Stearns' lone loss was to D-3 Ohio State Champion, Spencer Dye.

Donald Osinski also wrestled well this weekend. He was in a knock down, drag out with Michigan state champ, Jon Gruenberg for 3:00. Unfortunately, he got caught in a very nicely done spladle that ended the match.

Eric Zelina opened up his offense this weekend and it paid off. He scored at will with a single leg and high crotch that had most of his opponents on their heels. Zelina's loss in the consy finals was to Roshwan Jones who placed 7th at the 2005 Ohio state championships.

The AAU tournament featured some quality wrestlers this weekend. Kyle Goss' loss in the first round was to to Illinois 171 lbs. Class A State Champ, Matt Wegner. Lou Decker's 2nd loss was to Tanner Rasmussen, a 7th placer at the South Dakota state tournament.

Hadley Harrison Loses One Short of Medal Round In OT

Hadley Harrison's hope for a state medal disappeared in the final seconds of his second round consolation bout, Friday afternoon with Spring Grove's Kelin Bidelspach. Harrison and Bidelspach were tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, each wrestler scoring only an escape. Hadley scored first in the second period. But then was forced to use 1:50 of injury time nursing a sore shoulder he landed on while countering a Bidelspach takedown attempt.

Bidelspach escaped early in the third period to tie it up. Hadley pressured Bidelspach in the third period making several shots, but couldn't seem to finish one. The two went into overtime and Harrison appeared have a takedown on the edge of the mat about one minute into it. He hit a single and locked up a tight cradle, but the official didn't award it.

Harrison attempted another shot that came just short with 20 seconds remaining. He was backing out when Bidelspach dropped in on a low single. He had Harrison in a precarious position, but Hadley held on to Bidelspach's legs as the official signaled "no control." And then, For some unexplainable reason the official awarded Bidelspach the takedown with 3 seconds remaining, even though their position hadn't changed. That call ended Harrison's hope for a medal and his season.

It was a disappointing year for D10. Only 3 of 14 District 10 AAA wrestlers brought home medals.
Prep's Stephan Tighe placed 2nd. Prep's John Heynoski placed 8th and Warren's Bryan Uber was 5th.

A total of 18 AA wrestlers placed at the state tournament. Pat Bradshaw was the only D10 Champ. Aaron Nestor and Matt Dunn of Reynolds were runnerups. Reynolds won the AA State Team Title.

News and Notes:

Branden Stearns has one more weekend of high school sanctioned competion. Stearns will wrestle at the NHSCA Senior Nationals in Cleveland, OH. on March 30th through April 3rd.

Branden Stearns, Don Osinski and Hadley Harrison all made the GM record books for "Season Wins". Stearns and Osinski have 36 each. Only four other McLane wrestlers have more. Harrison has 35 on the season. It was Don Osinski's second entry in that category. He earned 35 wins last season. Donald has racked up a phenomenal 71 wins over the past two years and could hit 100 wins by January of 2006. Ditto for Hadley Harrison, who has 83 career wins.

McLane Wrestlers Have A Rough Day at PIAA Tournament

General McLane's three state qualifiers had a tough day at the PIAA tournament on Thursday. Collectively, the trio of Don Osinski, Hadley Harrison and Branden Stearns went 1-5. Osinski and Stearns both went 0-2 and were eliminated from further competition. All three Lancers lost their preliminary round bouts and only Harrison managed to bounce back for a win.

Hadley Harrison lost by fall to Central Bucks West's Pete Ferrara in the opening round. He came back and knocked off last year's 8th placer, Northampton's Dave Gilio, 6-1 in the first consy round. However, Harrison's win over Gilio was much closer than the final score would indicate. The two were tied 1-1 with 20 seconds remaining. It looked like the bout was headed to overtime when Harrison dropped in, snagged a single leg, locked up a cradle and took Gilio to his back for the win. Hadley needs a win in Friday afternoon's session to secure a spot on the podium.

Branden Stearns dropped a 5-3 decision to last year's 7th placer, Scott Hunter of Emmanus in the opening round. The two were tied 0-0 after one period. In the second, Hunter escaped and took Stearns to the mat with a throwby. Branden escaped to make it 3-1. In the third period, Hunter attempted single leg takedown. Stearns switched as they were going to the mat, and nearly tied the scored. He had Hunter in a crab ride but was high and ended up being pulled over top. Hunter was awarded the takedown. Stearns scored one more escape to make the final score, 5-3. Stearns then lost a 4-1 decision to Owen J Roberts' Tony Fuschino in the first consolation round.

Donald Osinski wrestled very well but was a victim of bad luck and good funk. He lost in the preliminary round to Ephrata's Shane Hyman 9-3. That sent him to the consolation bracket where he ran into last year's state runnerup, Josh Oliver of Easton, who had been upset earlier. Osinski went after Oliver and hit an outside single, but Oliver scored five points when he hit Donald with a funk move that flipped him to his back. The two wrestled evenly for the rest of the bout, but Oliver ended up winning, 8-3.

It was a tough day for District 10 in general. Only Prep's Stephan Tighe and Warren's Ryan Uber advanced to the quater final round. District 10 wrestlers, Prep's John Heynoski, Oil City's Jacob Spuck, McDowell's Jeremy Little and Central's Joe Welton all won their first round consolation bouts and were one win away from medaling. A total of seven D10 wrestlers went 0-2 and were eliminated.

AAA wrestling resumes Friday at 1:30 PM with the quarter finals and the second round of consolations.

Hadley Harrison Wins Regional Title
Stearns Takes Runnerup Spot, Osinski Third

Hadley Harrison continued his winning ways on Saturday and wasn't seriously challenged until the finals. Hadley waltzed through the semi final round with a 12-2 major decision over Phillipsburg-Osceola's DJ Cassler . But the finals bout against DuBois' Zach Lundgren was anything but a waltz. Harrison scored the first takedown to take a 2-0 lead, but Lundgren escaped and countered with a takedown of his own. Regulation ended with the score tied at 4. The two battled to a stalemate in the first overtime, but Hadley scored first in the bout which gave him choice in the rideout period. He chose bottom, came straight to his feet, cut and escaped about 12 seconds into the rideout for a 5-4 win and his second regional title.

Branden Stearns scored a solid 6-0 decision over District 9 Champ, Mario Morelli in the semi finals. In the finals, he faced Holidaysburg's D6 Champ, Brian Shaw. Branden beat Shaw in last year's regional final, but Shaw was looking for revenge. Shaw wrestled defensively on his feet and waited for an opening. He got two and scored a takedown each time. Stearns just couldn't seem to get an offense going. Shaw used those two takedowns and an escape to hang on for a 5-2 win.

Donald Osinski lost a semi finals bout to Tom Barger by an 6-3 score. Donald, who was battling a cold or bug all weekend just couldn't seem to get into his usual "attack" mode. He managed to get by Franklin's Luke Miller, 2-0 in the consolation semi final round, but still needed one more win to move on to states. He got it. Osinski hit an outside single on Bald Eagle's Bryant Clontz and took the Eagle to the mat for a 2-0 first period lead. He rode the early momentum to a solid 5-0 win and qualified for the state tournament for the second straight year.

Ashton Osterberg saw his high school wrestling career come to an end in the consolation semis when he dropped a gutsy 4-1 decision to Prep's Joe McCullough. Osterberg wrestled aggresively and threw everything he had at McCullough, but couldn't penetrate the lanky Rambler's defensive style. Eric Zelina was also eliminated in the consy semis when he lost to Indian Valley's Adam Will. Zelina made a respetcable showing as a sophomore, going 2-2 in his first trip to regionals.

News and Notes from Regionals:

Hadley Harrison became just the 3rd McLane wrestler to win a Regional Title twice. Greg Leehan did it in '80-81 and '81-82 and Mike Caro did it in '85-86 and '86-87.

Donald Osinski, Branden Stearns and Hadley Harrison all entered the Lancer record books this weekend for "Season Wins". Osinski and Stearns both have 36 wins and Harrison 34.

Branden Stearns owns 110 career wins. That ties him with Hudson Harrison for 4th place on the "Career Wins" list.

Senior Co-Captain, Ashton Osterberg put up some amazing numbers in his two years of varsity wrestling. He had 60 wins (2 consecutive 30 win seasons) against just 16 losses. He racked up 29 falls, 11 major decisions and 4 tech falls. Ashton also set a new school record for most "3 point near falls." Congratulations on a great career.

NW Regional AAA Results-Day One

All five of McLane's Regional qualifiers were still in the medal chase after day one of NW Regional AAA Tournament in Altoona. Don Osinski, Hadley Harrison and Branden Stearns all won their quarter finals matches and will wrestle in the semi final round.

Don Osinski had his hands full with Lewistown's Cody Johns. Donald took Johns to the mat with a quick takedown, but was immediately reversed. Johns stayed within a single point for five minutes and the outcome was uncertain until Osinski, who had dominated on his feet, cut Johns loose and took him down twice in the final moments for an 11-8 win.

Hadley Harrison gave up the first takedown to Central Mountain's Blane Benner, but escaped with 30 seconds left in the opening period. Hadley nailed Benner with a single leg and snuck in a tight cradle for the fall at 1:40. Branden Stearns took down Bald Eagle's Brian Kochik in the first for a 2-0 lead. Kochik escaped to cut it to 2-1. In the second, the two got into a wild scramble and Kochik was awarded a takedown. But Stearns reversed him to his back and took a commanding 7-3 lead. Branden added an escape and a pair of takedowns in the final stanza for a 12-4 major decision.

Ashton Osterberg dropped a painful 7-5 overtime decision to Lewistown's Justin Shafranich in the prelims. Osterberg bounced back in the first consy round with a 12-5 win over Central Mountain's Josh Diehl. Eric Zelina posted a 4-0, opening round win over DuBois' Colin Cilladi. In the quarters, Zelina lost by fall to Bald Eagle's top seeded Quentin Wright. He bounced back in the consolation round with a 4-1 win over Perry's Rob Lay.

Wrestling resumes Saturday at noon with the semi final round.
