Three
McLane Wrestlers Place at PAJW Championships
Three
Edinboro area wrestlers placed at the PAJW state championships
this past weekend in Wilkes-Barre, PA. McLane freshman 145
pounder, Tyler Hendricks took 7th place, Eighth grader,
Ken Stoll took 8th and 10 year old Ethan Laird
nabbed runnerup honors.
Tyler
Hendricks won his first match 4-3 over Daniel Sullivan
of Bethel Park. He lost his 2nd match to 2x state champion
Tristen Sponseller 9-0, then beat Devin Stacey of Central
Mountain, 5-0. He lost his 4th match 3-1 in O.T. to Eric
Capra of McGuffey. Then Hendricks bounced back with a big
win over Mac Mitchell by a fall in 1:42 of the 2nd period
to take 7th.
Ken
Stoll lost in the opening round, 13-0 to Ian Moritz
of Fox Chapel. He won his 2nd match over Phillip Stahlman
of Trinity by fall 1:43 of the 2nd period. He won his 3rd
match 8-7 over Nick Moss of Conneaut Lake. Stoll posted
another win by a score of 6-1 over Garret Foster of Somerset,
then lost 6-0 to Justin Patrick of Ligonier Valley. Ken
finished with a 7-1 loss to Max Kubas of Franklin Regional
to take 8th.
Ethan
Laird won his 1st match 6-2 over Cameron Tinner of Shippensburgh,
then had successive wins over Tyler Parks of Brookville
by fall :42, and a 6-5 squeaker over Chris Kober of Haverford
to make the finals. Laird dropped his finals bout by a score
of 11-2 to Michael Beard of Daniel Boone.

Wheeling, DJ Myers, Lester and Doug Myers
Garner All Region Honors
GM
state placewinner, Caleb Baker was named District
10's outstanding 285 pounder by the Erie Times News on March
17th. The District 10 All-Star team selection was made from
a pool of wrestlers from both the AA and AAA ranks. This
year's All-Star team consisted of 11 AA wrestlers and only
three AAA wrestlers. The three AAA stars were: Baker, Jermaine
Easter (Prep) and Steve Spearman (McDowell) who became the
first AAA state champ from District 10 since Meadville's
Disty Heist in 2000.
Tim
Wheeling was named to the Region 4 All-Star first team
at 112 pounds. D.J. Myers, Dalton Lester and
Doug Myers all garnered 2nd team honors.

Caleb Baker
Nabs 5th Place at State Tournament
Caleb
Baker made McLane wrestling history this past weekend
in Hershey when he became first heavyweight to qualify and
place at the PIAA Championships. Baker went 3-2 and took
5th place, thanks in large part to a stunning comeback over
4th ranked, Cole Dillman of Conestoga Valley in the final
seconds of regulation in the preliminary round. Trailing
by a score of 4-1 with just 9 seconds remaining, Caleb hit
a quick single leg and spun behind for the tying takedown
just as his opponent was penalized one point for stalling.
That tied the score at 4 and sent the bout into overtime.
After
a scoreless first overtime period, Baker gave up an escape
to Dillman and trailed 5-4. In the second overtime, Dillman
broke Caleb down flat and had an arm pinned behind his back.
Just when it looked like time was going to run out on the
Lancer big man, he hit a roll, knocked Dillman off his base
and escaped. That knotted the score at 5 each. Four seconds
later Caleb scored the winning takedown.
Baker
followed up with a workmanlike, 5-1 win over 10th ranked,
Dave Dewan of Springfield Delco. He scored two takedowns
and an escape to secure a top six finish for himself. In
the semifinal round, Caleb ran into returning state champ
and top ranked, Evan Craig of Abington Heights. The two
were locked in a scoreless battle when Craig pinned the
Lancer at the 3:40 mark. That dropped Caleb into the consy
semis where he lost a dramatic, 4-2 decision to Norristown's
Marcus Robbins on a last second takedown.
Baker
rebounded in the 5th/6th place wrestle off against number
2 ranked, Averee Robinson of Sesquehanna Township. Caleb
took a 2-0 lead in the second period when he reversed Robinson.
Robinson tied the score when he got a takedown with 27 seconds
remaining in the bout, but Baker escaped almost immediately
and held on to win a 3-2 decision.
Tim
Wheeling went 0-2 in a very tough, 112 pound weight
class. Wheeling dropped a 20-4 technical fall to 4th ranked,
Josh DiSanto of Pennsbury in the preliminary round and then
lost a 5-1 decision to 10th ranked, John Brigham of Cumberland
Valley.
General
McLane finished 52nd out of 126 teams at this year's tournament.
News
and Notes:
Caleb
Baker is the first McLane underclassman to place
at the state tournament since Mike Caro did it in 1986.
Baker also racked up win number 40 in his final bout. Only
three other General McLane wrestlers have scored more wins
in a single season (Hayden Harrison 41, Donald
Osinski-42 and Hadley Harrison-48).
Tim
Wheeling is also setting some new McLane wrestling standards.
He is the first GM wrestler to qualify for the state tournament
back to back in his freshman and sophomore years. Wheeling
has also been winning matches at a torrid pace, posting
70 wins in his first two seasons.
Placing
at the AAA state tournament is no easy feat. Only three
other Distict 10 wrestlers managed to do it. McDowell's
sophomore sensation, Steve Spearman won his and McDowell's
first state wrestling title. Congratulations to Spearman
and first year head coach, Shane McChesney. Michael
Pollard of Corry took 5th and Jermaine Easter
of Cathedral Prep placed 7th.

Baker and Wheeling
Qualify for PIAA Championships
All
that stood between Caleb Baker and his first Regional
title was six seconds, unfortunately he needed seven. Trailing
Central Mountain's Zach Corl by a single point with six seconds
remaining in the championship bout, Caleb exploded from the
bottom, stood up and rolled Corl to his back just as the final
horn sounded. The call could have gone either way, but the
officials ruled the clock had expired just before Baker established
control. Final score: Corl 4 Baker 3.
Caleb
wrestled an aggressive, smart match and had the 3rd ranked
Corl on the ropes as the clock ticked down to the final seconds.
In the first period the Lancer 285 pounder took Corl down
and straight to his back, but was denied back points because
Corl's shoulders landed out of bounds. The two wrestlers were
tied 2-2 at the end of two periods, but Baker regained the
lead with an escape in the third stanza. He held off the Central
Mountain big man for most of the final period, but Corl got
the clutch takedown at the out of bounds stripe with just
6 ticks left.
Baker
won his quarterfinals bout by fall over Altoona's Braedon
Luciano and followed with a solid 4-2 win over District 9
champ, Andre Buck of Clearfield to make the finals. Caleb
may have had to settle for 2nd place this weekend, but he
will head to Hershey with a burning desire to make some noise
at the state tournament.
Tim
Wheeling took 3rd place for the second consecutive year
and did it the hard way. After beating Clearfield's Shane
Peters 8-1, Tim lost a major decision to eventual champ, 3rd
ranked, Tom Traxler of Bellefonte in the quarterfinals. The
determined Lancer 112 pounder, then rattled off four straight
wins. Two of those wins came against opponents who had beaten
Wheeling earlier in the season.
In
the consy semis, Wheeling posted a one sided 7-2 win over
Trevor Graham of Franklin. Graham had beaten Wheeling, 4-3
just a week ago in the District 10 finals. He followed that
amazing feat by posting a surprisingly easy 5-1 decision over
TJ Stanton of DuBois who had beaten Tim 3-1 in the Tool City
finals in January.
Senior
160 pounder, Dalton Lester came up just one win short
of making the PIAA championships. Dalton lost his first and
last bouts of the tournament to Central Mountain's Tyler Buckwalter.
After his opening round loss, Lester posted three straight
wins, one of them over Titusville's Dylan Huffman who had
beaten him a week earlier in the District 10 semis. Dalton
finished the tournament with another loss to Buckwalter in
the consy finals.
189
pounder, Doug Myers went 2-2, posting wins in the opening
round and in the first consolation round. Tom Nuhfer
went 1-2 at 171 pounds. He posted a 9-5 opening round win
over District 9 runner up Logan Shadeck, but then suffered
back to back losses to eventual champ, Jermaine Easter of
Prep and Titusville 3rd placer, Jake Burnside. Junior, Kyle
Kuntz went 0-2 at 103 pounds in his first trip to the Regional
tournament.
News
and Notes:
8th
ranked Caleb Baker wrestled very well in Altoona and
certainly opened some eyes by nearly beating 3rd ranked Zach
Corl of Central Mountain. Caleb also added another pin to
run his season total to 23 and career total to 48. Caleb could
very well be on his way to setting a new standard for "career
falls."
Tim
Wheeling showed what a wrestler can accomplish with enough
focus and determination. Many wrestlers would have folded
up when faced with the challenge of wrestling two opponents
who had already beaten them during the season. But that challenge
just seemed to ignite Wheeling, who buzzed right through both
wrestlers. Tim also became the first McLane wrestler to
qualify for the state tournament back to back years as a freshman
and sophomore.
Senior,
Dalton Lester finished the season with a team leading
38 wins and also set a new record for most reversals in a
single season. Dalton's 38 wins also tied him for 9th place
on the "Season Wins" list with Branden Stearns and
Jake Keene. Congrats to Dalton for a great year.
Good
luck to all of the GM senior wrestlers. It's been a pleasure
watching you.
