McLane Wrestlers Named to All-Region Team
Eleven
wrestlers from General McLane's 2012-2013
Region 4AAA and District 10 championship team
were named to GoErie.com's All-Region 4 Team
on March 15th. Joe Wheeling (106), Mike
Sutton (152), Tyler Hendricks (170),
Chris Laird (182), Alex Thayer (195)
and Jake Baker (195) were first team selections.
Making the second team were Keller Watkins
(126), Deane Twitchell (132), Ken Stoll
(138), Kyle Sult (145) and Ossie Bowers
(160).
It
may seem odd that Ossie Bowers is on the
second team since he was one of just five AAA
state place winners this year. But it's my understanding
that these selections are made by the Region 4
coaches before the post season begins.
Congratulations guys!

OSSIE
BOWERS MEDALS AT PIAA CHAMIONSHIPS
Ossie
Bowers wrapped up an awesome senior year with
an 8th place finish at the PIAA Wrestling Championships
in Hershey on Saturday. The road to the medal
stand was not easy for Bowers who had to face
returning state champ, Garrett Peppelman of Central
Dauphin right out of the gate. He wrestled well
against Peppelman, but lost that one 15-5 and
dropped into the consolation rounds. Ossie wasn't
finished though as he won his next two bouts to
clinch a spot on the podium. He beat #13 Ben Schweiger
of North Allegheny, 8-3 in overtime and then upset
#5 Evan DiSora of Easton, 4-1. Ossie dropped to
the 7th/8th place wrestle off when he lost to
Northampton's 8th ranked Bobby Fehr, 7-2. He just
barely missed placing 7th when he lost his final
bout to #6 Justin Staudenmayer of Plymouth Whitemarsh,
2-1. Ossie held on to a 1-0 lead and nearly rode
out Staudenmayer, giving up a reversal with just
5 ticks left on the clock.
Joe
Wheeling won his first match over #14 Collyn
Dorney of Quakertown but had a tough break in
the quarterfinals. Wheeling was in a scramble
in the first period against broze medalist, Tyrone
Klump of Nazareth when Klump came out on top and
had Joe in a tilt. That put Wheeling in a 4-0
hole. Joe chipped away at Klump's lead and was
only trailing 5-4 in the 3rd period. Wheeling
was aggressive taking no less than 4 deep shots
on Klump. Klump, who had a stalling warning called
on him in the 2nd period, was on the defensive
for nearly the entire 3rd period, but was never
called for stalling again. Klump held on to win,
5-4. Wheeling dropped in to the consolation second
round and was eliminated when he lost again to
4th placer, Gage Curry of North Hills, 7-3.
Mike
Sutton also had a tough break in the tournament.
After losing to 7th placer, Brendan Burnham of
Pine Richland, Sutton came back with a 3-2 win
over Rashon Lusane of Norrirstown. In the second
consolation round Mike faced off against 8th placer,
Dan Krysiak of Prep. Sutton scored what appeared
to be a takedown at the edge of the mat in the
1st period, but the official waved it off. That
would be the difference in the match as Krysiak
went on to win it, 3-2. It was Sutton's first
loss to Krysiak in four meetings this season.
Hunter
Hendricks went 0-2 but wrestled very well.
the McLane freshman had to face #6 Tanner Soap
of Chambersburg in the preliminary round and dropped
an 8-3 decision. Hendricks ended his season with
a 12-7 loss to Gateway's AJ Wilkins.
Chris
Laird also went 0-2. The Lancer junior lost
15-4 to 10th ranked, Cooper Deller of Dallastown
and then dropped a 5-0 decision to Alex Price
of North Penn.
Notes
From the PIAA Championships:
Congratulations
and good luck to senior Ossie Bowers. It
was great to see Ossie come home to GM and finish
his wrestling career here and cap it off by winning
a medal at the state tournament.
Next
year should be very interesting with four state
qualifiers returning to the lineup and a few other
potential state qualifiers. I expect the McLane
wrestling team to be a force to reckon with
again next year!
Ossie
Bowers also finished the season with the most
wins (38). Joe Wheeling had the fewest
losses with 3 and 2 of those came at the state
tournament. His only other loss was to AA state
champ, Devin Brown of Saegertown at the Tool City
Tournament. Wheeling now has 96 career wins. Mike
Sutton has 92.
If
Joe Wheeling can qualify for the state
tournament again next year, he would join his
brother Tim, Hadley Harrison, Phil Frndak and
Bill Kirdahy as McLane's only 3 time state qualifiers!

Five
GM Wrestlers Earn Trip to Hershey
For
just the second time in the history of the wrestling
program, General McLane will send five wrestlers
to the PIAA Championships. The last time five
McLane wrestlers qualified for the state tournament
was in 2004 when GM won the NW Regional team title.
That year, Jake Keene, Hayden Harrison, Hadley
Harrison, Branden Stearns and Donald Osinski all
made the cut.
This
year Joe Wheeling and Mike Sutton
both won NW Regional titles. Hunter Hendricks,
Ossie Bowers and Chris Laird all
nabbed 3rd place. Keller Watkins and Jake
Baker came up just short of qualifying with
4th place finishes. The Lancers placed 2nd in
the team race. They barely missed winning the
team title, finishing just 8 1/2 points behind
McDowell.
Joe
Wheeling dominated his weight class. He opened
with an 8-2 win over Meadville's Aaron Ehrgott
in the quarterfinals, then scored an 11-1 major
decision over Williamsport's Roshaun Cooley in
the semis. In the finals, Joe handled 12th ranked,
Shae Bloom of DuBois, by a score of 8-4. Mike
Sutton pinned Mark Troisi of DuBois
in the preliminary round, scored a 15-0 technical
fall over Richard White of Greater Johnstown in
the quarters and beat Mifflin County's Joe Knarr,
6-2 to make the finals. Sutton faced off against
Cathedral Prep's 20th ranked Dan Krysiak in the
all-District 10 finale and won the 152 lbs. title
with a hard fought, 7-6 decision.
Freshman,
Hunter Hendricks took the longest road
to states. After winning by 14-2 major decision
over Allen Saar of Jersey Shore in the preliminary
round, Hendricks lost to 10th ranked Hayden Hidlay
of Mifflin County in the quarterfinals. Hunter
came roaring back to post four straight wins.
Hendricks pinned Titusville's Kaleb Chase in the
second consolation round and then pinned Carrick's
Vinnie Mion in the consi quarters. He followed
that up with a 7-1 decision over Steven Bottorf
of Central Mountain to make the consolation finals.
Hendricks took 3rd place when he upset Bald Eagle
Area's Travis Giedroc, 6-2.
Ossie
Bowers just missed making the finals when
he lost a heart breaking, 3-2 decision to Titusville's
12th ranked, Ehrin Lee in the semifinals. Bowers
pinned Trevaun
Jackson of Westinghouse in the preliminary round
and then scored a 7-0 shutout over District 9
champ, Mike Kennelly of DuBois in the quarters.
After losing to Lee, Ossie bounced back by pinning
Markief Knode of Altoona and then beat Kennelly
again in the consolation finals.
Chris
Laird opened the tournament with a 5-0 shutout
of St. Marys' Joey McLaughlin and then bested
District 9 runnerup, Shane Marshall of DuBois,
9-3. Laird dropped a 7-3 decision to eventual
runnerup, Blaze Buckwalter of Central Mountain
in the semifinals. Chris rebounded with back to
back wins in the consi semis and consi finals.
He beat Dennis Lumadue of Philipsburg Osceola,
5-0 and then decisioned Shane Marshall of DuBois
by a score of 5-1 to clinch the bronze.
Keller
Watkins added another technical fall to his
resume when he beat Selinsgrove's Marcus Winn,
17-0 in the preliminary round. Keller made the
semifinal round when he pinned
District 8 champ, Josh Zinkovsky
of Alderdice in 1:51. Watkins lost to eventual
champ, Kaleb Young of Punxsutawney in the semis,
but then shut out District 6 champ, Noah Stewart
of Miflin County, 3-0 to make the consolation
finals. Unfortunately, Keller came out on the
short end of a 7-2 decision to Dylan Graham of
Clearfield.
Jake
Baker just missed qualifying for the state
tournament when he lost a heart breaking, 3-2
decision to Kyle Kahley of Mifflin County in the
consolation finals. Baker scored a 9-1 major decision
over Carrick's Jesse Reid in the first round but
then dropped a 3-0 decision to eventual champ,
Nathan Sharkey in the quarterfinals. Jake made
the consolation finals when he bounced back with
a pair of wins.
Deane
Twitchell and Alex Thayer both went
3-2 and were eliminated in the consolation semifinal
round. Ken Stoll went 2-2, Tyler Hendricks
and Ian Mallory went 1-2. Tyler Hendricks
actually made the semifinal round. He had a bye
in the preliminary round and then pinned Darryl
Englehardt of Shikellamy in the quarterfinals,
but then dropped back to back decisions to eventual
runnerup, Nick Shawley of Bellefonte and 3rd placer
John Prentice of Philipsburg Osceola.
The
five GM state qualifiers will be back in action
at the Giant Center in Hershey on Thursday, March
7th. Good luck!!!
----------------------------
Notes
From the NW Regional Tournament:
One
thing worth noting is that 4 of the 5 state qualifiers
are underclassmen. Ossie Bowers is the only senior
among them. Hopefully that's a sign of good things
to come next year.
Sadly,
Tyler Hendricks, Alex Thayer and
Jake Baker saw their high school wrestling
careers come to an end in Altoona on Saturday.
Tyler Hendricks finished his career with
88 wins. He won a District 10 title this year,
qualified for regionals twice and was a state
qualifier last year. Jake Baker really
came into his own this year. As a sophomore Jake
only won 7 of 26 matches. Contrast that with this
year's record book entry, 34 wins. Jake also had
a 3rd place finish at Districts and placed 4th
at regionals. Last but not least, Alex Thayer.
Alex had a great year. He was utilized during
the season mainly in a reserve roll, but made
the lineup for the post season. and what a post
season it was. Alex won a District 10 crown and
went 3-2 at regionals. He also ended the season
with 20 wins and only 6 losses. Congratulations
to all three wrestlers!
Hunter
Hendricks has to be the biggest surprise of
the year. Due to an injury he was out of the lineup
for a month. Hunter went into the post season
with a modest 12-6 record and then opened some
eyes. Hendricks upset McDowell's Benji Yates on
his way to a runnerup finish at districts and
then went 5-1 at regionals, upsetting BEA's Travis
Giedroc in the consolation finals to snag 3rd
place and qualify for states. WTG!
Four
Mclane wrestlers entered the GM record books this
weekend for Season Wins. Joe Wheeling and
Jake Baker both have 33 wins. Chris
Laird has 34 and Ossie Bowers leads
the pack with 36. Wheeling, Laird and Bowers will
have a chance to add on to those numbers in Hershey.
Joe Wheeling also now has 95 career wins. Keller
Watkins added one more tech fall this weekend
and ran his career record to 17.
Mike
Sutton is on a roll. After losing, 5-4 to
Tyree Spearman at the District 10 Duals, Mike
has rattled of 12 straight wins. Ditto for Joe
Wheeling. After losing to top ranked Devin
Brown of Saegertown in the finals of the Tool
City Tournament, Joe has run off 20 straight wins.
