Lancers Successful Season Ends Abruptly at PIAA's

It was a tough day for the Lancers at the PIAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday. Carmine Ciotti was the only GM wrestler to advance to the quarterfinal round on day one. Five other GM wrestlers lost their opening round matches and Ian Mallory was eliminated in the first consolation round. Besides Carmine winning his first round bout, the other bright spot was Ethan Laird's performance. Ethan Laird won his pigtail match to move into the preliminaries. He then lost to #1 ranked Kyle Gentile of Pennridge but bounced back to win in overtime against Joe Doyle of Council Rock South in the first consolation round.

As tough as Thursday was, Friday was even tougher for the Lancers. Carmine Ciotti suffered an 11-3 loss to #8 Dan Moran of Northampton in the quarterfinals. That seemingly set off a chain reaction of six straight McLane losses that would end their tournament a full day early. As bad as it all sounds, there were some valiant efforts by the GM wrestlers. Hunter Hendricks nearly pulled off an upset over #11 Tyler Kenney in the 2nd consi round. Hendricks trailed for most of the match, but reversed Kenney with just 2 seconds remaining to send it into overtime. Unfortunately Hendricks lost the bout on a controversial takedown call in OT. Giovanni Ciotti also lost his bout due to a couple of questionable calls at 138 lbs. He was leading, 1-0 over #7 Demetri DOrsaneo in the 3rd period and riding tough when he was called for stalling twice. That proved to be the difference in the match.

Keller Watkins also lost a close one at 152 lbs. to #5 Ethan Smith of Greater Latrobe. Keller gave up and early takedown and then got one back. He trailed 5-3 in the 3rd but just couldn't take Smith to the mat again. Ethan Laird was the next GM wrestler to bow out. Ethan just couldn't get anything going against #5 Niyaz Bakradze at 170 lbs. in his final match, losing by 11-3 major decision. Kyle Sult easily took down and rode out Penncrest's #13 Joe Pyfer at 182 lbs. in the opening stanza. He appeared to be on his way to an upset when he tried to hit an ill advised lateral drop and got caught on his back for the fall.

The season ended for Carmine Ciotti and the McLane wrestling team when Ciotti lost a controversial decision at 113 lbs. against #12 Hunter Baxter of Pine-Richland. Both wrestlers came close to taking the other down in the first period. Baxter and Ciotti were scrambling at the end of the period when the officials awarded Baxter a takedown at the buzzer. The officials even took a few moments to talk it over, but the call stood. That was the difference as Carmine came out on the short end of a 2-0 decision.

Notes on the PIAA Championships and the Season:

It's difficult if not impossible to compare teams from different eras, but this McLane wrestling team has to be one of the best, most successful teams in the program's history. They sported an overall 17-3 record. All 3 of those losses were at the hands of state ranked teams (#11 AAA Canon-McMillan, #8 AAA Parkland, #12 AAA Council Rock South). Two of those three losses were by a mere 4 points (with an injured GM starter out of the lineup). The Lancers also had wins over some state ranked teams (#14 AAA Spring-Ford, #14 AA Montoursville and #22 AA Greenville).

They won their 3rd straight Region 4 title, the Fred Bell and Tool City Tournaments, The Clearfield Bison Duals, the District 10 AAA Team Duals, the District 10 AAA Tournament and finished a close 2nd at the 2015 NW Regional Tournament. The Lancers also finished the season with their highest ever state team ranking (#13). Congratulations on an awesome season!

Ethan Laird was the victim of the PIAA's new 20 man bracket. For many years the state tournament has been a 16 man bracket with all 16 wrestlers starting on the same footing. Ethan was randomly placed in a pigtail round. He ended up having to wrestle 3 times on Thursday (winning twice), just to end up in the same place most of the wrestlers in his weight class were after they suffered a loss in the preliminary round. Since this tournament is not seeded based on records or similar criteria, I think this is grossly unfair. I hope they come up with a better system than the one they tried this year. Under the old system Ethan would have been a medalist. At any rate, congratulations to Ethan for posting 2 wins at what is arguably the country's toughest wrestling tournament!

Senior, Giovanni Ciotti wrestled his last high school match for GM on Friday at Giant Center. He ended the season with a 34-7 record. He won the 138 lbs. title at Fred Bell and the District 10 Tournament title. He finished 2nd at regionals. He ended his high school career with 99 wins!

Ian Mallory, also a senior, finished 2nd at Districts. With his 3rd place finish at regionals Ian became a rare, 2 time state qualifier this year. Ian racked up 69 wins in his 3 years as a starter.

Keller Watkins finished his high school career with a stellar, 125-34 record. His 125 wins is 5th best in McLane history. Keller also set records for Career technical falls (50), Season tech falls (25), Career reversals, Career 3 point near falls, Career 2 point near falls, Season 2 point near falls and Season 3 point near falls. Watkins also won numerous tournament titles. He was a 4 time District 10 AAA tournament finalist and won 2 titles. He was also a 4 time NW Regional place winner and a state qualifier this year.

It's a long time between now and next December but I have a feeling next year's team will also be a very successful one. Several talented underclassmen starters will be returning (4 of the 7 state qualifiers were underclassmen). There is also some untapped talent waiting in the wings to fill in the gaps left by the graduating seniors. The 2015-16 season should be an exciting one.
