Six GM Wrestlers
Named to All-Region Team
A
total of six McLane wrestlers were named to the 2015-16
All-Region 4 Team by the Erie Times-News. Brett
Mallory and state qualifier, Ethan Laird were
first team picks. It was the third straight year Laird
has been named to the All-Region team. Mallory won his
first District 10 AAA title at 126 lbs. this year.
Second
team Lancer selections were: Hunter Hendricks (138),
Briggs Twitchell (145),
Owen Watkins (152) and Jacob Lenhardt (285).
Hendricks is a two time pick, making first team last season.
Twitchell and Watkins also made last year's All-Region
squad.
Unfortunately
no GM wrestlers were selected for this year's All-District
10 Team, which combines the AAA and AA classes.

Ethan Laird
Comes Up Just Short In Hershey
Ethan
Laird came so close to nabbing a medal for the second
year in a row. Last year, Ethan started in a pigtail round
so he needed 3 wins to place. He got 2. This year he needed
2 wins to make the podium. He got 1. Laird opened the
tournament by beating 12th ranked, Edwin Morales of Mariana
Bracetti Academy, 5-3. Ethan took a commanding 4-1 first
period lead and hung on for the win. Unfortunately his
next two bouts would be against two of the PA's best 170
pounders.
In
the quarterfinals, Laird dropped an 11-3 major decision
to Bethel Park's Santino Bonaccorsi (ranked 2nd in the
state and 12th in the nation). Ethan managed to get one
takedown and an escape in that loss. That dropped Ethan
into the 3rd consolation round. A win would secure a medal
for the McLane junior. But he wasn't able to make it happen
against 5th ranked Jake Schaffer of Greater Latrobe. Schaffer
wrestled well defensively, holding Laird to a single point
and went on to win, 7-1.
Notes
From the State Tournament:
Ethan
had a great year and career so far (he's only a junior).
He finished the 2015-16 season with a stellar 35-6 record.
He reached 99 career wins faster than any wrestler
in GM history (Joe Wheeling had 96 at the end of
his junior season). Laird is already a 3-time state qualifier
and could become McLane's first 4-time state qualifier
next year. Good luck Ethan, stay healthy, keep the wins
coming and bring back some hardware next year!
Ethan's
two losses came against a state runnerup and and a 5th
placer. Noah Stewart of Mifflin Co., who beat Ethan in
the NW Regional finals finished 4th.

Laird Takes
Runnerup Honors - Twitchell 4th at Regionals
Briggs
Twitchell came so close to punching his ticket to
states. He bounced back from a loss in the quarterfinals
to tournament champion Brock Port, winning three straight
to make the consi finals. It looked like he was on his
way to Hershey when he took a 4-2 lead over #12 Dakota
Weitosh in the second period. But Weitoch fought his way
back into the match and tied the score at the end of regulation.
Weitoch reversed Twitchell in the 2nd OT to take a 6-4
lead. Briggs got an escape in the 3rd OT to make it 6-5,
but couldn't get a takedown before time expired and had
to settle for 4th place.
Ethan
Laird will make his third trip to the state tournament
after taking 2nd place at 170 lbs. Ethan won by fall to
open the tournament, took a 9-0 major decision in the
quarterfinals and then squeaked out a 3-1 overtime decision
over 10th ranked Luke McGonigal of Clearfield in the semis.
He lost in the finals to #4 Noah Stewart of Miflin Co.
Owen
Watkins had a tough luck tournament. He won his first
bout by fall, but then ran into top ranked Hayden Hidlay
in the quarterfinals and lost by fall. Owen posted a fall
and a major decision to make the consi semifinal round.
Unfortunately for Owen, Dazion Casto was disqualified
in the semifinals for an illegal slam. That dropped Casto
into the consolation semis against Watkins. Casto prevailed
by a score of 3-0. It was the 3rd time he decisioned Owen
this year. Brett Mallory made the semifinals before
losing to #4 Cole Manley of Altoona. He lost by fall in
the consolation semis to end his tournament.
Jacob
Lenhardt, Riley Vaughn and Hunter Hendricks
all went 2-2 and ended their tournaments in the consolation
quarterfinals. Jordan Motter and Adam Steiner
both went 1-2.
The
Lancers finished 6th out of 31 teams. It was the
lowest finish for a McLane wrestling team since 2011 when
they were 7th.
Notes
from Regionals:
Ethan
Laird went 3-1 in Altoona. He now has 34 wins this
season and 98 career wins. That's amazing for a junior!
Hunter
Hendricks, Briggs Twitchell, Jordan Motter
and Adam Steiner saw their high school wrestling
careers end on Saturday. We enjoyed watching all of you
wrestle over the years.
Briggs
had a great season and entered the record books in two
categories. He ended the year with 34 wins and 6 major
decisions! Even after being sidelined due to sickness
for a couple of weeks Owen made it to 20 wins before
his season ended. He now has 70 career wins!
