McLane Wrestlers Make All-Region Team
This
year's GoErie.com All-Region team featured six McLane
wrestlers, three first team selections and three
second team selections. Andrew Brest (106),
Ethan Laird (195) and Riley Vaughn
all made the first team. Brett Mallory, Owen
Watkins (152) and Jacob Lenhardt were
second team selections. Ethan Laird was also named

ETHAN
AND OWEN MAKE HISTORY IN HERSHEY!
Two
for two! Ethan Laird and Owen Watkins
made history this weekend in Hershey at the PIAA
Individual Championships. While they both lost their
final high school matches, the two combined for
5 wins, and left their marks on the GM wrestling
program! The duo wrestled their way to the podium,
placing 2nd and 8th respectively. It was the first
time since 2004 that two GM wrestlers medaled at
states in the same year and just the fourth time
it's been done since the wrestling program elected
to go AAA in 1982-83.
Ethan
became GM's first 4 time state qualifier when he
won the 195 lbs. title at regionals last week. He
followed that up by breaking Hayden Harrison's record
for most wins in school history in his first match
at states. And it didn't end there! Laird proceeded
to steamroll his way into the state finals, becoming
just the fourth McLane wrestler to do so at the
triple A level. Laird had to knock off the 3rd,
8th and 5th ranked 195 pounders in succession to
make the finals and that's exactly what he did.
In fact, he made it look easy.
In
the opening round he upset #3 Colin McCracken of
Waynesburg, 6-3. The outcome was never in doubt
as Ethan contolled the tempo of the bout and dominated
from the neutral position scoring three takedowns.
Ethan topped that performance by winning his next
two bouts by major decision, outscoring his opponents,
22-2. It took an all out effort by nationally ranked
(#3) Oklahoma recruit, Jake Woodley of North Allegheny
to halt Ethan's win streak at 36. Neither wrestler
was able to score in the first period. Woodley chose
bottom in the second and escaped to take a 1-0 lead.
He got in deep on Laird's leg a few seconds later.
Ethan nearly fought his way out of it, but stumbled
and Woodley made him pay for it. Laird managed to
escape in the the third period, but was not able
to penetrate Woodley's defenses and get a clean
shot. Final score, Woodley 3, Laird 1.
Owen
made his first appearance at the state tournament
this year and made sure he didn't leave empty handed.
The senior wrestled his way to an 8th place finish.
He started off with a 14-2 demolition of WC Rustin's
Daniel Labus. He lost by fall in the quarterfinals
to nationally ranked (2), Cameron Coy of Penn Trafford,
but bounced right back to secure his spot on the
podium with an 11-0 major decision over #11 Trevor
Elfin of Father Judge. He lost in the consolation
quarterfinals to #2 Chase Stevens of Coatsville
and dropped into the 7th/8th place wrestle off with
#5 Brayden Wills of Mechanicsburg.
Owen
came out on the short end of a controvesial 2-1
decision in his final match. He turned Wills midway
through the second period for what looked to be
a solid two count but wasn't awarded any points.
In the third period he clearly reversed Willls.
Owen had Wills' leg hooked, head secured and nearly
had a cradle locked up, but was once again denied
the call. Then, with just seconds left in the match,
Owen appeared to score a takedown at the edge of
the mat, but didn't get the benefit of that call
either.
GM
finished 19th as a team, their fourth best finish
since going triple A in 1982-83. That's a notably
accomplishment with just two wrestlers in the tournament.
Notes:
Ethan
Laird broke two of GM's most meaningful records
during his four years on the mat. He topped Hayden
Harrison's 13 year old Career Wins mark of 135 and
now holds that record alone with 138. He
became the first wrestler in the 56 year history
of the program to qualify for the state tournament
four times! Laird is also one of only four McLane
wrestlers to make the AAA state finals. Ethan's
name shows up under several other categories in
the GM record books as well. Only one GM wrestler
scored more takedowns in a single season than Ethan
did and that was Hayden Harrison. Ethan suffered
only 2 losses this season and both of them came
at the hands of state champs by narrow margins!
Owen
Watkins had a fantastic senior season. He placed
at states and finished with 33 wins, 21 falls, 3
technical falls and 4 major decisions. His senior
record of 33-8 is a little misleading. Of those
8 losses, 4 of them were to a single wrestler, state
runnerup, Carter Starocci, 3 were to wrestlers at
the PIAA tournament and 1 was at King of the Mountain
to the then #1 ranked 152 pounder, Riley Palmer
of Council Rock South, by a single point.
Here's
a snippet I wrote about Owen at the conclusion of
his sophomore season.
"Remember you heard it here first. For the
next two years Owen Watkins is going to be a force
to reckon with. Even though he didn't place at regionals
this year, he wrestled very well. He just seemed
to get better every week as the season progressed.
Owen has that rare ability to come out of nearly
any scramble on top. He's also racking up the falls
(he lead the team with 16). His junior and senior
seasons should be interesting to say the least."
Owen did not disappoint me. He won 68 matches
in his last two seasons and placed at the country's
toughest post season tournament.
This
may not have been one of McLane's best wrestling
teams of all time, but they certainly were one of
the most exciting to watch. No less than three times
they had their backs against the wall and came roaring
back to win crucial dual meets by a single point.
Hats off to the coaching staff for a job well done!

LAIRD
AND WATKINS HEADED TO HERSHEY
TEAM PLACES 3RD
Ethan
Laird won the 195 pound regional title in Altoona
on Saturday and set two GM wrestling records along
the way. The senior cruised through the tournament
without being seriously challenged. He won all four
bouts, two by fall, two by technical fall and became
the first wrestler in the history of the program
to qualify for the state tournament four times!
He also tied Hayden Harrison's record for 'Career
Wins' at 135! Ethan pinned St. Marys' Brandon
Cherry in the preliminary round and then won by
18-3 technical fall over state ranked Dave Henninger
of DuBois in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal
round he decked Mifflin County's Scout Kyper in
3:23. Ethan finished his perfect run with an 18-2
technical fall over #10 Parker McClellan of Altoona.
Owen
Watkins made the finals in the 152 pound weight
class but lost to Prep's #3 Carter Starocci in the
finale. He pinned Hayden Boutiller of Altoona in
the preliminary round and followed up with a 7-2
decision over Dominic Parker. Owen battled hard
for a 7-6 upset win over #8 Austin Hemminger of
Somerset in the semis. The match wasn't as close
as the score would indicate. Watkins controlled
the tempo of the match throughout and held a 7-4
lead when Hemminger scored a meaningless takedown
just before the final buzzer.
Andrew
Brest and Riley Vaughn placed 4th and
just missed making the trip to Hershey. Both westlers
came out on the short end of very close matches
in the semifinal round. Brest won his first
bout, 11-1 over BEA's Garett Giedrock and followed
that by pinning Payton Smay of Clearfield. In the
semis, Andrew lost a heartbreaking 12-9 decision
to #18 Christian Fisher of Mifflin Co. He bounced
back to major Giedrock again in the consi semis.
He was the aggressor for most of his consolation
finals bout, but #30 Cole Stewart of Bellefonte
fought him off and scored the final 2 points to
deny Andrew the bronze. Vaughn wrestled very
well in Altoona, pinning his first two opponents,
before losing, 5-4 to #17 Pete Haffner of State
College in the semifinals. Then in the consolation
semifinals, Riley surprised everyone when he decked
#16 Micah Sidirock of Philipsburg-Osceola in the
first period. In the consi finals Vaughn piled up
a 4-0 lead against #29 Blake Bizousky of Punxy,
but couldn't hang on to it. Bizousky came roaring
back, tied it 6-6 in regulation and then won the
match with a controversial takedown in OT..
Jacob
Lenhardt came one win short of placing at 285.
He opened the tournament with a win by fall, but
then got caught in a throw and gave up a fall to
district 8 champ, Malik Townsend of Perry. Jacob
bounced back to win by fall twice. In the consi
semis, he gave #25 Richard Thompson of Central Mountain
all he could handle, but lost by fall in overtime.
Jack
Kaulis also just missed making the medal rounds.
He went 3-2, winning his opening round bout before
falling to #3 Cole Urbas of State College in the
quarterfinals. He won his second round consolation
match, 4-1 and then squeaked by Meadville's Thomas
Pollard in the consi quarters, 1-0. He bowed out
of the tournament when he lost a close, 4-2 decision
in the consi semifinals to Mason McCready of Holdaysburg.
Brett
Mallory, Jon Carrier and Cayden Connolly
all went 1-2 in Altoona and added valuable points
to the team effort. GM finished the tournament 3rd
in the team race behind Prep and DuBois! Owen
and Ethan will be in Hershey on March 9th-11th
battling the state's best wrestlers for a spot on
the podium.
Notes
From Regionals:
Ethan
Laird became the first wrestler in the 53 year
history of the wrestling program to qualify for
the state tournament four times. Phil Frndak,
Bill Kirdahy, Hadley Harrison, Tim
Wheeling and Joe Wheeling were 3 time
qualifiers. With his four wins in Altoona, Laird
also tied Hayden Harrison for most wins in
school history (135). Harrison has held that record
for 13 years! Laird will go into the PIAA tournament
ranked 4th in the state.
Owen
Watkins won three times in Altoona and joined
the 100 Win Club. That is quite an accomplishment
considering the fact that Owen had only 15 wins
as a freshman and just 20 as a junior when he missed
several matches due to injury. Watkins ran his season
record to 31-5 with 4 of those losses coming at
the hands of #3 Carter Starocci. Owen will go into
the PIAA tournament ranked 9th in the state.
Jacob
Lenhardt's three wins, all by fall, ran his
pin total to 20 and etched his name in the
GM record book. Only 18 GM wrestlers have ever posted
20 or more pins in a single season! Jacob also ended
his season with 30 wins! Lenhardt racked up 87 wins,
44 by fall in his career.
Andrew
Brest wrapped up a very successful sophomore
season with a 32-6 record, including 16 pins, 2
technical falls and 6 major decisions! Brest came
so close to punching a ticket to states, losing
a very close match in the semifinals. If Andrew
continues to work hard, look for him to accomplish
some great things!
Riley
Vaughn also came close to making the trip to
Hershey - twice! He lost a very close, 5-4 decision
to #18 Pete Haffner in the semis. Then with his
back against the wall, he pinned #17 Micah Sidirock
of Philipsburg-Osceola. In the consolation finals,
Riley went into overtime with #29 Blake Bizousky
but lost, 8-6 when Bizousky was awarded a takedown
on a very controversial call.
Jon
Carrier, Riley Vaughn and Jacob Lenhardt
all saw their high school wrestling careers come
to an end this past weekend. We really enjoyed watching
these seniors wrestle for the past four years and
wish them much success in the future.
