WILSON
SPIRES GOES 1-2 AT
PIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Wilson
Spires finished off a spectacular junior year
with a very respectable performance at the
state tournament in Hershey. Spires won his
first round match by a score of 3-2 over 13th
ranked, Jacob Pomykata of Butler. Wilson worked
a body lock, then spun behind to take his
opponent to the mat for a 2-0 lead at the
1:49 mark in the opening period. Pomykata
was able to escape with one second remaining
to cut the lead to one. Spires chose bottom
in the second period and was able to escape
with 47 seconds remaining to make the score,
3-1. Pomykayta cut Wilson's lead to 3-2 with
1:25 left in the bout, but Spires was able
to hold him off.
In
the round of 16 Spires ran into Upper Darby's
3rd ranked, Julian Laventure. Laventure, a
senior and 6th place finisher from the 2021
state tournament proved to be a tough customer.
Laventure was built like a linebacker and
had the speed to match. Laventure racked up
six takedowns, an escape and a 13-5 lead before
getting the fall at the 4:56 mark.
Wilson's
final match in the first consolation round
against #11 Layton Scmick of Carlisle was
a real battle that could have gone either
way. Neither wrestler was able to score in
the first period. Spires chose bottom in the
second stanza and escaped in 43 seconds to
take a 1-0 lead. Wilson body locked Schmick
and nearly took him down a few seconds later
but the two landed just out of bounds. Spires
decided to cut Schmick immediately in the
third period and that knotted the score at
1-1. Wilson was aggressive and went after
Schmick but neither wrestler was able to score
for the rest of regulation or during the first
sudden victory period. Wil chose the bottom
position in the first tie breaker round but
was unable to escape. Schmick gambled and
chose the top position for the final tie breaker
and it paid off. Wilson attempted a roll through
about 10 seconds in, but Schmick caught Spires
on his back and got the fall at 6:40.
Wilson
Spires finished the season with a 38-6 record,
22 falls, 65 takedowns and 208 team points.
He lead the team in all four categories. Even
with last year's shortened season, Wilson
has already racked up 89 wins and 57 pins
in his career.

WILSON
NABS BRONZE AT
THE NW REGIONAL TOURNAMENT!
The
GM wrestling team had a somewhat disappointing
regional tournament this year, suffering some
untimely and unexpected losses. But there
were also some bright spots. 106 pounder,
Teige Berger, seeded 8th, wrestled
a great tournament. He went 4-2, including
two pins and a major decision on his way to
a 5th place finish. Berger's last victory
was the 30th of his freshman season. Junior,
Kyle Cousins, also an 8th seed, matched
Berger's feat, going 4-2 and nabbing a 5th
place medal. Cousins won 3 of his 4 bouts
in the consolation rounds, including a 5-3
sudden victory nail biter in the consi quarters.
But
the high point of the tournament was Wilson
Spires' top notch performance. Spires,
following an opening round bye, went 3-1,
losing only to Oliver Billotte of Clearfield
in the semifinal round. Billote, ranked 5th
in the state, was able to shut down Wilson's
normally unstoppable offense and post a 6-0
decision. But Spires finished the tournament
with a couple of offensive gems. He racked
up a 13-3 major decision over Central Mountain's
Brayden Blackwell in the consi semi round
and then followed that up by pinning McDowell's
Jack Sroka after building a 6-2 lead, in the
3rd place bout!
Hudson
Spires and Dan Mulligan both went
2-2 and came up just short of placing. Both
wrestlers dropped decisions and were eliminated
in the consolation quarterfinals. Ben Watkins,
Magnus Lloyd and Jessi Stempka
all went 1-2. Lloyd may have been in, arguably
the tournament's most competitive weight class.
No less than 6 of the 13 wrestlers in the
172 weight class were state ranked. The Lancers
had a slow start and were in 15th place after
the first round. They soared up to 10th after
a couple of good rounds and then ended up
12th of 28 teams. Spires will advance to the
PIAA Championships in Hershey, which will
take place March 10th-12th.
Notes:
Wilson Spires improved his season record
to a spectacular 37-4 with 22 pins. Only three
GM wrestlers broke the 30 win mark this year.
Magnus Lloyd finished his sophomore
season with 33 wins. Teige Berger notched
his 30th W this weekend, a feat very few freshman
have ever achieved.
