SEVEN
GM WRESTLER NAMED TO ALL-REGION 4 TEAM
Seven
General McLane wrestlers were named to the 2022-23
GoErie All-Region 4 Team. Hudson Spires,
Chance Kimmy, Magnus Lloyd and Wilson
Spires were selected to represent the first
team. Derek Dube, Kyle Cousins and
Jessi Stempka made the second team. In
addition, state place winners, Magnus Lloyd and
Wilson Spires were also named to the All-District
10 Team. Congratulations!

WILSON
AND MAGNUS MEDAL
AT PIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS!
McLane
wrestling fans, coaches and wrestlers were able
to come away from the 2022-23 PIAA Championships
with big smiles on their faces this year. Senior,
Wilson Spires and Junior, Magnus Lloyd
wrestled their way into the medal rounds and brought
home some hardware! Lloyd made the semifinal round
before tasting defeat. Spires took the harder
road. He lost in the first round after a preliminary
bout win and had to beat two highly ranked opponents
in a row to make the medal rounds. And junior,
Chance Kimmy also scored a win over a highly
ranked opponent before he dropped two straight
to Laurel's #1 Grant MacKay and #11 J. Hockenberry-Folk
of West Perry.
Lloyd
pulled off a come from behind, 7-4 upset win over
4th ranked, returning state place winner (7th)
Jacob Sheib of Tri-Valley in the first round.
Sheib took Magnus to the mat just 36 seconds in
with a single leg, to go out front, 2-0. Lloyd
escaped immediately to make it 2-1. Magnus chose
bottom to start the second stanza and quickly
stood, turned and escaped to make the score, 2-2.
Lloyd hit a nice sweep single with 50 seconds
left in the period. Sheib tried to get out of
bounds, but Lloyd pulled him back in and dropped
to the ankles for a takedown on the line, to take
a 4-2 lead. Sheib chose bottom in the third and
was able to score a reversal on an attemped mat
return. That made it 4-4. Sheib cut Magnus loose
to go for the takedown and nearly got it. He got
in deep and sat Lloyd to on the mat, but Magnus
rolled through and back to his feet. Sheib shot
in deep again, but Lloyd rolled through again,
came out on top to clinch the victory!
In
his next bout, Magnus dominated #16, Lucas Miller
of NW Lehigh and cruised to a 7-0 victory, which
assured him of a top six finish. Magnus
suffered three straight losses after that win.
One to junior sensation, Rune Lawrence of Frazier,
who was a two-time state champ and won the 189
lbs. title again this year. Lloyd's second loss
was a heart wrenching, 3-2 defeat at the hands
of #8 Rowan Holmes of Somerset. In the 5th place
match he ran into last year's state finalist,
#3 Jake Jones from Saucon Valley and lost by fall.
Wilson
Spires pinned #22 Brad Miller of River Valley
in just 52 seconds in the preliminary round. He
faked a single leg shot but then slid up and body
locked Miller. He spun Miller a half turn and
then took him right to his back for the fall.
Wilson had the unenviable task of taking on returning
state champ, Riley Robell of Bishop McDevitt in
the following round. Riley used a throwby to get
the first takedown and took a 5-0 lead before
pinning Spires.
But
Wil wasn't done yet, he followed up with not one,
but two upsets to make sure he had a spot
on the podium. He beat #10, Christian Flaherty
of Keystone Oaks, 3-1 in the second consolation
round to stay alive. But his "blood round"
victory over 4th ranked, SW Regional champ, Gunner
Singleton was one for the ages. For the first
4 minutes it looked like Singleton was going to
cruise to a win. He held a 3-1 lead until Spires
locked up on him and took him to the mat with
1 minute remaining in the third period. Wilson
cut Singleton loose to attempt a go ahead takedown,
but he gave up a takedown on the edge of the mat.
That put Singleton back in front, 6-3 with just
40 seconds remaing in the bout. Undaunted, Wil
stood and escaped just a few seconds later. He
waded right into his opponent, body locked him
and tripped him to his back for two swipes. That
put Will out front, 8-6 with just 21 ticks left
on the clock. Singleton escaped with 12 seconds
left, but Spires held him off.
In
the consolation quarterfinals, Spires met #11
Joey Baronick of Burgettstown. In typical heavyweight
fashion, the two battled to a 1-1 stalemate in
regulation. With 18 seconds left in the sudden
victory period, Spires attempted a headlock, but
Baronick snagged Wilson's leg, took him to the
mat and got the fall. In the 7th/8th place match,
Spires went head to head with #8 Owen Reber of
Berks Catholic and it turned out to be another
exciting finish. There was a lot of hand fighting
and Spires tried to work in that body lock several
times, but Reber defended well. Regulation ended
with the score knotted at 1-1 and they went into
the sudden victory period. Both wrestlers pummelled
the each other for position. Spires pushed his
opponent off the mat, which resulted in Reber
getting a stalling warning. When they restarted,
Reber took a half hearted shot and Wilson locked
up on his upper body. As they struggled, their
legs got tangled and both fell toward the mat.
Spires was on the bottom with his back exposed,
but he held the body lock, rolled through and
forced Reber to his back for the pin!
Chance
Kimmy scored an upset win over #14, Alex Hoffman
of Milton in the first round. Both wrestlers took
cautious shots in the first period, but neither
scored. Hoffman opted for the bottom position
in the second period. He tried everything in his
arsenal to escape, but Kimmy rode him like a leech.
Chance even took Hoffman to his back and got a
2 count, but for some reason the officials waved
it off. Kimmy went to the bottom in the final
period with the score tied at 0-0. He managed
to stand and escape just 9 seconds in. Chance
played the remainder of the third period perfectly.
He didn't back up, did a lot of hand fighting
and took a couple of conservative shots. But also
stayed in good position and waited for his opponent
to make a mistake. Hoffman nearly took Kimmy down
in a crazy last minute scramble, but Chance kept
moving, rolled through and came out on top with
just 3 seconds on the clock for a 3-0 decision!
Unfortunately, Kimmy lost his next two bouts and
was eliminated. He lost by fall to two time state
finalist, Grant MacKay of Laurel (MacKay went
on to win the state title) and then came out on
the short end of a 9-2 decision at the hands of
11th ranked, returning state qualifier, Justice
Hockenberry-Folk of West Perry.
News
and Notes:
Chance
Kimmy wrestled well in Hershey even though
he didn't place. His win in the opening round
was his 40th of the season. That tied him
for 7th place for 'season wins' with 4 other GM
wrestlers. Ironically, one of those four was Hudson
Harrison, who was calling radio play by play
for Kimmy's matches in Hershey. Kimmy is a junior
so he may very well be back in Hershey next year!
Wilson
Spires ended his high school career with 117
wins. He passed Tommy Kirdahy (116)
for 12th place on the 'career wins' list. He broke
the 'career falls' record last week and add two
more for a total of 76! It was Spires second trip
to the state tourney. He qualified for the AAA
tournament last season and went 1-2.
Magnus
Lloyd racked up two wins in Hershey and that
brings him to 83 career wins. Hopefully he'll
break that 100 mark easily next season and return
to Hershey!
With
Spires and Lloyd placing in Hershey, it's the
first time in six years the team returned with
two medals. Ethan Laird (2nd) and Owen Watkins
(8th) last did it in 2017. GM placed 30th of 113
teams this year. All three GM state qualifiers
stepped up this weekend and beat wrestlers who
were ranked higher than they were. And some of
the losses they suffered were to multiple time
champions who are ranked Nationally (Riley Robell
#5, Rune Lawrence #6, Grant McKay #14).
Congratulations
to Ashley Campbell, who qualified for the
girl's state tournament and won 3 of 5 matches!
She came up just one win short of making the medal
rounds when she suffered a tough, 2-0 loss in
the blood round. Ashley is a first year wrestler
and only a sophomore!

Three
GM Wreslers Advance To Hershey
Three
McLane wrestlers made it through the meat grinder
called regionals and advanced to the PIAA State
Tournament. Magnus Lloyd, Chance Kimmy
and Wilson Spires all made the cut. Ryan
Dedrick came up just short with a 5th place
finish and will be an alternate at 215 lbs. Lloyd
took 2nd place, Kimmy 3rd and Spires 4th.
Magnus
Lloyd had an opening round bye. He then majored
Greenville's Teage Calvin, 8-0 in the quarterfinal
round and followed up by beating #7 Carter Chamberlain,
12-8 to make the finals. Chamberlain was an 8th
placer at last year's state tourney. In the finals,
Lloyd went head to head with 5th ranked, Jackson
Zimmerman of Brookville. Zimmerman, who was a
2022 state qualifier proved to be a tough customer.
He took Magnus down twice and cruised to a 5-2
decision and the 189 lbs. crown.
Chance
Kimmy battled his way to a 3rd place finish.
He rattled off four wins in the tourney and suffered
just one loss to 2nd ranked Hunter Hohman of Grove
City in the semifinals. Hohman, who placed 7th
in the state last year, went on to win the 160
lbs. title. Kimmy was dominant for the most part,
scoring a 7-0 shutout in the quarterfinals, a
major decision in the consolation semis, and a
pin in the 3rd place match over Vito Gentile of
Reynolds.
Wilson
Spires earned his trip to Hershey with a 4th
place finish at 285 lbs. Spires opened with a
win by fall over 27th ranked Cooper Rossman of
Coudersport. In the semis, he dropped a 5-2 decision
to 5th ranked, Carson Neely of Port Allegany.
Wilson bounced back and made his way onto the
podium with another pin in the consolation semis
over Commodore Perry's Garet Guthrie. Spires lost
a heart breaking, 1-0 decision in the consi finals
to 7th ranked, Gavin Thompson of Brockway.
All
eight GM wrestlers got into the win column
at least once in Sharon. Freshman, Clay Kimmy
went 2-2 and so did Hudson Spires. Clay
and Hudson both suffered heart breaking losses
in the quarterfinals. Kimmy dropped a 3-2 decision
to 13th ranked, Jake Bennett of Fort LeBoeuf and
Spires suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Clearfield's
Ty Aveni. Clay had a couple of nice wins in the
tournament - a 9-0 major in the first round and
6-0 shutout in the first consolation round. Both
of Hudson's wins came by way of fall and added
needed bonus points to the team total.
Teige
Berger and Kyle Cousins both went 1-2.
Teige won by major decision in the opening round
before suffering back to back losses. Cousins
also opened with a major decision, but then dropped
two straight. The team squeezed out a 5th place
finish, just 1 1/2 points ahead of 6th place Grove
City, who had three tournament champs. So all
of those bonus point wins were crucial to GM making
the top five! The state tournament is set for
March 9th-11th in Hershey.
News
and Notes:
This
is the first time since 2018-19 that the team
has qualified three or more wrestlers for states.
It was also the team's highest finish at the AA
Regional Tournament in modern times. They placed
8th in 2019 and 7th in 2020. Overall it was the
team's highest finish since 2016-17 when they
took 3rd at the NW Region AAA Tournament. Owen
Watkins and Ethan Laird both qualified
for the show that season.
Wilson
Spires did it! The 285 pounder posted 2 falls
at regionals and brought his career total to
74. He surpassed Caleb Baker, who set
the record of 72 back in 2011. Both wrestlers
did it despite the fact that neither of them wrestled
four full seasons. Wilson missed about half of
this season due to injuries and had a shortened
season during the pandemic. And Baker only wrestled
one varsity match his freshman year. Wilson also
became a two time state qualifier this weekend.
Last year he was 3rd at the NW Regional AAA Tournament
and went 1-2 in Hershey! In addition, his career
wins total is now 113. That ties him for 13th
place with Eric Zelina in the GM record
book.
Congrats
to freshman, Clay Kimmy. Kimmy didn't qualify
for states but he did rack up 31 wins as a freshman.
Only a handful of GM freshman wrestlers have broken
the 30 win mark! Chance Kimmy ran his team
leading win total to 39. Only 10 GM wrestlers
have won more than 39 matches in one season. Kimmy
has had a phenomenal post-season so far, winning
12 of 15 matches.
Sadly,
Kyle Cousins wrestled his last match as
a Lancer this weekend. Cousins had a very successful
four years on the varsity team. He racked up 87
career wins and 52 of those were pins! He was
a 3 time District 10 place winner and was a finalist
last season. Cousins finished this season with
a whopping 31 wins! Ryan Dedrick went 4-2
and ran his win total to 33 - that gets him in
the 33+ win club in the GM books!
