4 Wrestler of the Year: Story Buchanan - Girard
LANCERS
COME UP EMPTY IN HERSHEY
Five
McLane wrestlers qualified for the 2024 PIAA Championships
this year and despite some top notch wrestling
by all of them, they were unable to bring home
any hardware this year. Magnus Lloyd, a
6th placer at last year's state tournament came
the closest, falling one match short of securing
a spot on the podium. He won his first match by
fall but then dropped from the winner's bracket
when he was defeated by three time state qualifier
and eventual runnerup, Garrett Garcia. Ryan Dedrick
and Clay Kimmy also scored one win each before
bowing out.
Magnus
got off to a great start by pinning West Perry's
11th ranked, Tucker Seidel in 2:22 in the opening
round. In the quarterfinals he ran into an exceptional
wrestler - Garrett Garcia of Southern Columbia.
Garcia was ranked 3rd by PA Power Wrestling and
1st by Keystone. He was the only 189 pounder to
enter the tournament unbeaten at 30-0. Garcia
rolled to an 11-0 major decision. Magnus then
dropped into the blood round and was eliminated
when he lost a heart breaking 3-2 decsion to #4,
three time state qualifier, Lucas Lawler of Bishop
McDevitt. Lawler went on to place 4th in the tournament
Ryan Dedrick went 1-2 in Hershey. He lost
to last year's 4th placer, Rowan Holmes of Somerset
in the opening round. Dedrick was battling evenly
early in the first period against Holmes when
he tried to body lock and back trip Holmes. Unfortunately
his opponent defended it well and took Ryan right
to his back for the fall. Dedrick bounced back,
dominating Quade Bowden in the first consi round
and cruised to a 5-1 decision. His shot at a medal
ended when he lost a 9-6 decision against last
year's state placer (8th), Dante Burns of Conwell-Egan
in the 2nd consolation round. Burns and Holmes
both went on to finish in the top five.
Clay
Kimmy, in his first trip to states, was impressive
winning his first match in the pigtail round over
#16 Tyler Clark of Frazier. Clay had Clark on
his back three times in that bout and rolled to
a 12-3 major decision. That broke the GM record
for most majors in a single season. In the round
of 16, Clay fell to #2 Camden Baum of Bishop McDeviit,
14-4. Baum wrestled his way into the finals before
losing, 2-1. The tournament ended for Clay when
he was beaten, 8-0 by last year's state 7th placer,
Max Wirnsberger of Warrior Run.
Hudson Spires was eliminated from the tournament
on Thursday afternoon. Hudson dropped a 5-0 decision
to 5th ranked, Dominic Sumpolec (40-11) of Notre
Dame-Green Pond in the first round. He met Penns
Valley's Ethan Fetterolf (30-15) in the first
consi round. Fetterolf got in deep on a single
and took Hudson to the mat for a 2-0 lead in the
1st period. Spires escaped to cut the deficit
to 2-1 just before the period ended. Fetterolf
escaped with a minute left in the 2nd stanza and
then took Hudson down again with 36 seconds left
in that period. 10 seconds later, Spires scored
a reversal to make it 5-3. He was on the bottom
to start the final period and still had a chance
to pull out a come from behind win. Unfortunately
Hudson got caught in a cradle. His opponent didn't
score with it but he managed to suck nearly a
minute off the clock. Spires finally escaped with
48 seconds remaining to cut it to 5-4. He nearly
scored the winning takedown but couldn't clear
his leg before the final buzzer.
Chance
Kimmy saw his tournament and GM wrestling
career end on Thursday. Chance lost his first
bout by technical fall to Burgettstown's, 11th
ranked Rudy Brown, 15-0. In the first consi round,
Chance went head to head with #16 Jenson Hockenberry-Folk
of West Perry. Hockenbury-Folk took a quick 5-0
lead in the 1st period with a throwby and a power
half. Kimmy chose neutral in the 2nd period and
was the agressor, but his opponent managed to
stave off his attacks. Chance locked up a cradle
for 3 back points just 15 seconds into the 3rd
period to make the score 5-3. He put his opponent
in another cradle that could have turned the tide
with 50 seconds remaining, but the two rolled
out of bounds. Kimmy tried to lock that cradle
up again but came up short. Hockenbury-Folk reversed
him right at the final buzzer. Ironically, it
was Hockenbury-Folk who ended Kimmy's bid at the
state tournament last year.
On
the girl's side of things, Ashley Campbell
went 1-2 in her trip to Hershey. Ashley lost her
first match to Natalie Handy of Southwestern,
17-0, then rebounded with a 3-0 shutout over Julia
Ritter of Hughesville. Campbell was eliminated
when she fell to Souderton's Emily Sarr, 7-0.
Both of the girls who defeated Ashley placed in
the tournament.
News
and Notes:
Chance
Kimmy finished his GM wrestling career with
38 wins on the season and 108 in his career.
He also racked up 25 falls this season (5th best
all time) and 64 career falls (4th best all time).
He placed 2nd at sections, 3rd at districts and
4th at regionals in a very deep weight class.
Sophomore,
Clay Kimmy put up some big numbers this
year. He finished his season with 34 wins and
already has 65 in his career. He also broke
the record for 'season escapes' and 'season major
decisions' (11). Clay was 3rd at sections, 4th
at districts and 4th at regionals. With some good
wrestling and a bit of luck, Clay could very well
reach the 100 career win mark his junior year.
In the history of the program, Matt Leehan
was the only wrestler to ever pull that off.
Ryan
Dedrick had a fantastic senior season and
without a doubt, became one of the best 215
pounders in the state. He won section and
district titles and was a regional finalist. He
racked up 38 wins, something only 18 GM
wrestlers have been able to accomplish since the
program began in 1961.
Junior,
Hudson Spires battled injuries most of
the year but managed to step it up in the post
season. He was runnerup at sections, districts
and regionals, in what was undoubtedly the
deepest weight class in the state. Hudson has
81 career wins so hopefully he'll reach 100 about
halfway through next season.
Magnus
Lloyd finished with 42 wins against just 7
losses this season. Only Hadley Harrison
had more wins in a single season when he racked
up 48 during the 2005-06 season. Magnus placed
3rd at the King of the Mountain Tournament, 3rd
at Mid-Winter Mayhem, 2nd at MYHouse Trojan Wars
and 2nd at Fred Bell. He won titles at both sections
and districts and was regional runnerup. He was
GM's first ever four time district champion,
winning titles in both AA and AAA. He was a two
time state qualifier and a state place winner
(6th) in 2023. Lloyd finished his career with
an incredible 125 victories, which is 6th
best all time!!! Those are legendary accomplishments!
Finally,
congrats to Ashley Campbell for becoming
the first GM female wrestler to qualify for the
girl's state tournament. Ashley posted a 23-10
record this season with 18 pins. She placed 2nd
at both the district and regional tournaments
and made the Round of 12 at states. Last year,
Campbell was 15-10, placed 4th at regionals and
made the Round of 12 at MyHouse Girls States!

GM
ADVANCES FIVE WRESTLERS TO STATES
Hudson
Spires, Ryan Dedrick, Magnus Lloyd,
Clay Kimmy and Chance Kimmy all
made the cut at the 2024 NW Regional AA Tournament
and advanced to the pinnacle of PA. wrestling
- the PIAA Individual Championships. Spires
and Dedrick took 2nd place in their respective
weight classes, Lloyd placed 3rd and the Kimmys
both finished 4th! All five will head to Hershey
and test their skills against Pennsylvania's top
wrestlers.
Hudson
Spires nabbed the silver medal in what was
undoubtedly, the tournament's deepest weight class,
160 lbs. Spires started the tourney with a pin
over #24, Gavin Donaldson of Titusville. In the
semifinals, Hudson ran into Kane's 9th ranked,
three time state qualifier, Reece Bechakas. Bechakas
was expected to make the regional finals but Spires
had other plans! Hudson was down, 3-2 in the 3rd
period when he reversed Bechakas and then rode
him out for a 4-3 upset win. Spires lost to Girard's
three time state qualifier, Story Buchanan in
the finale.
Ryan
Dedrick kept his great season rolling with
two huge wins to make the finals. He pinned #26
Sam Kightlinger of Harborcreek in the opening
round and then followed that up with a 3-0 shutout
over #12 Miska Young of Port Allegany in the semis.
Ryan fell in the finals to #11 Gavin Hannah of
Brookville.
Magnus
Lloyd scored a 15-0 technical fall over Commodore
Perry's Aiden Osborne in the quarterfinals but
then saw his hopes for a regional crown slip away
when he was upset by #10 Carter Chamberlain of
Clearfield in the semifinals, 5-1. But Lloyd dusted
himself off and secured his second trip to the
state tournament with a 5-2 decision over Port
Allegany's #25, Juuso Young in the consi semis.
Lloyd finished 3rd after Fort LeBoeuf's Conner
McChesney forfeited the consolation final match.
Clay
Kimmy went 3-2 and placed 4th at 133 pounds.
Clay started out with a 7-2 decision over Greenville's
Josh Perinno and followed up sneaking by #18 Colton
Ryan of Clearfield, 10-7. Clay fell to #8 Hunter
Gould of Conneaut in the semifinal round. He punched
his ticket to states when he bounced back with
an 18-8 major decision over Titusville's Nate
Stearns. Kimmy lost by fall to #7 Cyrus Hurd of
North East in the consi finals.
Chance
Kimmy also went 3-2 and took 4th at 152 pounds.
Chance won by major decision in the opening round
and then pinned #21 Avery Bittler of Johnsonburg
in the quarterfinals. Chance lost by fall in the
semifinal round to #7, 2023 state place winner,
Cody Hamilton of Grove City. He guaranteed himself
a trip to Hershey with a 6-0 shutout over Brookville's
Burke Fleming in the consolation semifinal bout.
Kimmy fell to 9th ranked, Caullin Summers of Sharpsville
in the consolation finals. Summers was an 8th
placer at last year's PIAA Championships.
The
GM state qualifiers will be back in action for
the final days of the 2023-24 season in Hershey
on March 7th, 8th and 9th.
---------------------
News
and Notes:
Finishing
regionals with five state qualifiers is a monumental
accomplishment! Pushing five or more through regionals
to the state tournament has only happened four
times in McLane history before this season.
State
qualifiers (5 or more)
2014-15 (7) Carmine Ciotti, Hunter Hendricks,
Giovanni Cioti, Keller Watkins, Ethan Laird, Kyle
Sult, Ian Mallory.
2013-14 (5) Joe Wheeling, Deane Twitchell, Ethan
Laird, Chris Laird, Ian Mallory.
2012-13 (5) Joe Wheeling, Hunter Hendricks, Mike
Sutton, Ossie Bowers, Chris Laird.
2003-04 (5) Jake Keene, Hadley Harrison, Don Osinski,
Hayden Harrison, Branden Stearns.
Magnus
Lloyd reached a few more milestones this weekend.
He scored his 39th, 40th and 41st wins
of the season. That ties him for 4th place on
the 'Season Wins' list with Gunnar Gage (2019-20),
Caleb Baker (2010-11) and Hayden Harrison (2003-04).
Lloyd now has 124 career wins - that ties
him with DJ Myers (2011-12) for 7th best in history!
He also scored his 14th career technical fall,
which puts him in 2nd place all time behind Keller
Watkins. Lloyd's loss to Carter Chamberlain of
Clearfield in the semis was his first defeat since
January 13th, when he lost to #1, two time state
place winner, Caleb Close of Bald Eagle at Mid-Winter
Mayhem. In fact, two of Lloyd's five losses this
year came at the hands of Close.
Chance
Kimmy also registered 3 wins this weekend,
making it 38 for the season. He's #17 on
that list. He now has 108 career victories!
Chance also got another fall at regionals, making
it 25 for the season. That ties him for 4th place
all time. He's also #5 on the 'career falls' list!
Ryan
Dedrick is also on the 'season wins' list
with 37 this year. Clay Kimmy also made
that list with his 33rd 'W' of the season!
Just a sophomore, Clay has racked up 64
career wins already. If he stays healthy he could
challenge Ethan Laird for the record before he
graduates. Clay also scored his 9th major decision
of the season. Only DJ Myers in 2011 has more
majors in one season (10).
Hudson
Spires is my pick for GM Wrestler of the tournament.
Hudson managed to make the finals in the deepest
weight class at regionals. No less than nine of
the twelve wrestlers in that division were state
ranked and only four of them made it through that
meat grinder. Spires pulled off a big, 4-3 upset
over 9th ranked, Reece Bechakas in the semifinals,
after trailing for most of the bout. Behind, 3-2
with roughly one minute remaining, Spires reversed
Bechakas and then rode him out to put himself
in the finals! Hudson has looked more like himself
the past two weeks and could shake things up in
Hershey!
Both
Chance and Clay Kimmy finished in
4th place behind three returning state medalists.
They became the 5th set of GM brothers to qualify
for the state tournament in the same year - Matt
and Mike Caro (1985-86), Hayden and Hadley Harrison
(2003-04), Chris and Ethan Laird (2013-14) and
Carmine and Giovanni Ciotti (2014-15) were the
other four.
Finally...on
the girl's side, 106 pounder, Ashley Campbell
pinned her first two opponents before dropping
a 12-2 decision to Greenville's Madilyn Enterline
in the finals. Ashley will go down in the record
book as the first girl's state qualifier in General
McLane history. Ashley sported a stellar, 22-8
record with 18 pins this year! Congratulations!!!
