Lancers Drop
3rd Straight to the Lake
The
Lancers ran up a 25-3 lead over visiting Conneaut Lake Wednesday
night, but the Lakers came storming back to win the last 8
bouts and the match. Keith
Scharrer started the night off with a 32 second pin over
Travis Morian. Freshman, Tyler Bowers kept the ball
rolling with an 11-3 major decision over Steve Knapp at 112.
Cyrus Parlin put on another dominating performance
at 119 pounds. Cyrus scored several sets of back points with
a series of bar arm combinations, before pinning his opponent
at 5:53.
The
Lakers briefly interrupted the GM run, when Matt Laird won
a hard fought decision over Glen Sult at 125. Glenn
held a 7-0 lead after two periods, but a locking hands penalty
and a Laird five point move late in the final period, sent
the bout into overtime. Joe Zimmerman turned in a great
performance against veteran, Tyler Thomas. Zimmerman pulled
out a 6-4 win when he hit a slick double leg in overtime.
Eric
Zelina made short work of Drew Ketchum at 135, pinning
the Lake wrestler in 50 seconds. That gave the Lancers what
appeared to be a commanding 25-3 lead, but things began to
unravel as Conneaut Lake won the last eight bouts, 4 by fall
and two by a single point.

Notes From the Conneaut Lake Dual:
Conneaut Lake's win Wednesday was the first over GM since
the 2000-2001 season. It was also the first time McLane has
started the season 0-3 in several years.
Eric
Zelina nailed down his 87th career win and 39th career
pin Wednesday evening.

Zelina and Decker
Place 4th at
King of the Mountain Tournament
Eric
Zelina and Lou Decker made the semifinal rounds
of the KOM tournament at Central Mountain High Scool friday
evening. Eric cruised into the semifinals with a decision
and two falls. Unfortunately both wrestlers dropped out of
the winners bracket with Saturday morning losses.
Eric's
loss was hard to take, according to Coach Cook. He was doing
very well against Red Lion's Ryan Luu, when he got caught
in a funky front headlock and was decked with only 7 ticks
left on the 1st period clock. Decker also wrestled
well in the semis, but couldn't get an offense going against
the state's #1 ranked 171 pounder, AJ Brentzel (Penn Trafford).
Lou ended up on the losing end of a 5-0 score.
Both
wrestlers bounced back to win in consolation semifinals round.
Zelina knocked off the tourney's #1 seed and 12th ranked
(AA), Tyler Myers of Penns Valley, by a 7-6 count. Lou
had no trouble disposing of Phillipsburg, New Jersey's Mike
Santini, 14-1.
Eric
finished 4th when he lost by fall to Central Mountain's
Johnathon Quiggle in the consi finals. Zelina had pinned Quiggle
in the quarterfinals on Friday. Lou Decker also finished
4th when he dropped his consolation finals bout, 16-8 to Jersey
Shore's 23rd ranked, Joe Loffredo.
Keith
Scharrer and Cyrus Parlin just missed the medal
rounds when they lost one bout short of the consolation quarterfinals.
Cyrus lost to #20 Joey Walters of Greater Latrobe in the 2nd
round. He bounced back with two wins in the consolation rounds
before he lost by fall, to Kenny Stank of Central Daughin.
Keith, who had three pins in the tournament, lost a heartbreaking
1-0 decision in his final bout, to David White of Athens,
on a penalty point.
Notes
From KOM Tournament:
Eric
Zelina won 4 matches at KOM, bringing his career win total
to 86. Lou Decker won 3 bouts and now has 75 career
wins. The Lancers finished 17th as a team...not too bad, considering
the fact that they only had 11 wrestlers entered in one of
Pennsylvania's premier tournaments. GM finished 13th at KOM
last season with a full team.
The
team's upper weights should be back on the mats on Monday.
Shawn McFadden, Ben Deppen, Jake Carter
and Ethan Polaski were in Hershey Saturday helping
the General McLane football team win their first ever, PIAA
AAA Football Championship over Pottsville, 28-23. Congratulations
guys!!!

Banged Up McLane
Wrestlers Place 4th @ McDowell Tournament
Missing
three upper weights due to the football team's success, the
McLane wrestlers somehow managed to claw their way to a 4th
place finish at Saturday's McDowell Invitational Tournament.
Shawn McFadden, Ethan Polaski, Jake Carter and Ben Deppen
were in Pittsburgh helping the GM Football team win their
first ever PA western final over #1 ranked Thomas Jefferson,
28-7.
Lou
Decker is still sidelined, Eric Zelina suffered an ankle injury
in Round 5, and Clay Steadman wrestled the entire day with
an injury. But the patched together, banged up Lancer squad
still managed to make a respectable showing.
Clay
Steadman, who was obviously in pain all day, breezed through
the 189 lbs. weight class with 3 falls and 2 shutouts. Clay
gave up just a single point in the tourney when he intentionally
cut his opponent loose to go for another takedown. His performance
in the finals, against St. Mary's, 12th ranked Travis Reed
was nothing short of stunning. Clay totally dominated the
Dutchman from the neutral position and on the mat to run up
an impressive 10-0 major decision.
Keith
Scharrer and Cyrus Parlin also won McDowell Tournament
titles. Keith won 4 bouts rather handily. He picked
up a fall, a major and a lopsided, 7-2 win to make the finals.
He then disposed of St. Marys' Zack Hoy by a 3-1 count. The
match wasn't that close, as Keith held a 3-0 edge late in
the final period. Cyrus posted 2 falls and a 12-0 major
before running into Port Allegheny's Shane Martin. Parlin
had to work hard for a 9-7 decision that propelled him into
the finals, where he won by injury default over Iroquois'
highly touted freshman, Dylan Simmer.
Seth
Stonis placed 2nd. He made the finals by posting 3 wins,
all by fall. Stonis dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Marys' Shane
Clarr in the 152 lbs. finals bout. Glen Sult took 3rd
at 125 lbs. Sult won by fall in the consolation finals. His
lone loss was to tournament runnerup, Chris Rowe of Sharpsville.
Joe Zimmerman and Eric Zelina both placed 4th.
Zelina looked like he was on his way to the finals, but suffered
a tournament ending injury in Round 5.
The
McLane wrestlers will be back in action this coming Friday
and Saturday at the King of the Mountain Tournament at Central
Mountain High School.
Notes
from the McDowell Invitational: Eric Zelina's last
win at the McDowell Tournament was the 82nd of his career.
He also surpassed Travis Goss's career takedown total to move
into the #10 spot on the all time list with 169.

Lancers Suffer
Worst Loss In More Than
Six Years to 11th Ranked Bellefonte
There
wasn't much to cheer about after Clay Steadman's opening
pin at Parker Middle school on Saturday. Steadman wasted no
time taking Ben Musser to the mat with a high crotch, then
pinning his opponent at the 1:38 mark. Bellefonte then won
11 of the final 13 weight classes, six by fall to run up a
43 point margin of victory over the short handed Lancers.
The
only other Lancers to score wins were Eric Zelina and
Cyrus Parlin. Zelina, who bumped up a weight
class, had his hands full with Shane Alterio. There was lots
of action in the first period, but neither wrestler was able
to score. Zelina escaped 12 seconds into the second period
to take a 1-0 lead. It looked like that one point lead might
be enough, but after the official warned Eric for riding parallel,
he decided to cut Alterio with 15 ticks left on the clock.
That sent the bout to overtime. Alterio took a shot about
midway through the period. Zelina caught him backing out and
scored the winning takedown on a nifty re-shot.
Cyrus
Parlin has been a pleasant surprise so far this year.
Parlin gave up an early takedown to Nathan James, but it was
all Cyrus after that. Cyrus escaped at the first period buzzer
to make the score 2-1. In the second stanza, Parlin worked
a bar arm combination mercilessly until he turned his opponent
for back points. Cyrus chose top in the final period and once
again rode his opponent with authority for the entire two
minutes to secure a 4-2 win.
The
Lancers will be back in action next weekend at the McDowell
Tournament. The McLane squad will still be without Shawn McFadden,
Ben Deppen, Jake Carter and Ethan Polaski, but Dale Sanders
and Lou Decker should be back on the mat.

Lancers Drop a One Point
Decision to McDowell at War at the Shore II
The
GM grapplers opened the season Friday evening at Erie Civic
Center with a one point loss to rival McDowell at the second
annual War at the Shore. Even though they lost, the
McLane wrestling team showed they will have some depth. Three
freshmen and three sophomores did an admirable job of filling
in for six missing starters.
Ethan
Polaski, Ben Deppen, Jake Carter and Shawn McFadden
were in Pittsburgh helping the Lancer football team beat District
8 champion, Oliver, 14-6 in the PIAA quaterfinals. Dale
Sanders and Lou Decker were both on the sidelines
nursing injuries.
Even
though the team lost, Coach Cook had to be pleased
with the performance of junior 119 pounder, Cyrus Parlin.
Parlin pulled off a big upset over two time District champ,
Steve Mancuso. Parlin and Mancuso both wrestled aggressively
in the first, but neither could score. Cyrus escaped early
in the second period, then countered a Mancuso flurry with
a single leg and took the Trojan to the mat for a 3-0 lead.
Parlin completely dominated Mancuso in the third by countering
every attempt by the Trojan to break free.
The
match started at 171 pounds. McDowell's Thor Perry picked
up a fall over junior, Leroy Jenkins to give the Trojans
a 6-0 lead. District champ, Clay Steadman answered
with a 3:21 pin over Edwin Taylor.
The
Lancers had to forfeit 215 and 285, which put McDowell on
top 18-6, but Keith Scharrer got six back by taking
a forfeit at 103. Freshman, Tyler Bowers dropped a
major decision in his first varsity match against McDowell's
Sean Stancliff, but turned in a gritty performance while wrestling
up a weight class. McDowell led 22-12 at that point, but GM
would win four of the next five weight classes to take a 30-25
lead.
After
Parlin's win at 125, Glen Sult pinned Jerre Nieminski
in just over a minute. Manley Lupher had a 3-1 lead,
but Matt McCullough came storming back to win a 4-3 decision
at 130. Joe Zimmerman won a convincing 6-0 decision
over James Zuendel at 135. District 10 champ, Eric Zelina
accepted a forfeit at 140 pounds, but Brayen Hayes got
6 back for the Trojans at 145, with a fall over Dan McConnell.
Sophomore,
Steve Hall pinned Andrew Borst at 152 pounds to give
GM a 36-31 lead with one bout to go. Things were looking good,
but McDowell's talented senior, Nick Gardner secured a McDowell
win with a pin at 160. Final score, McDowell-37 GM-36.
In
other War at the Shore action, Fort LeBoeuf upset highly touted
Mt. Pleasant, 38-26. Mercyhurst beat Gannon and the Edinboro
Fighting Scots rallied from a 13-0 deficit to beat Michigan
State. Former GM wrestler, Hudson Harrison won a hard
fought, 2-1 decision over NCAA qualifier, A.J. Sayles in the
Gannon vs. Mercyhurst match.
The
Lancers will be back in action tomorrow at Parker Middle School
against Bellefonte.
