GM Wrestlers Place 2nd at Jarvis-Wildcat Tourney

In a very deep and talented eight team field, the McLane wrestlers placed second behind traditional PA. powerhouse, Juniata. This year's Lancer team showed it's balance by finishing second without the benefit of an individual champion and placing ahead of 2009 New York State Tournament runner-up, Pal-Mac. Six GM wrestlers took runnerup honors, three took thirds and two fourths, in a tournament that featured 3 state champs, 14 state medalists and 18 state qualifiers.

Runner-Up finishes were turned in by Tim Wheeling 112, Brandon Horn 125, Jay Stockhausen 145, Tommy Nuhfer 171 Doug Myers 189 and Travis Bryant 215. Tim, Brandon and Jay each suffered their only losses against former state medalists (Sean McCormick-NY 2nd and 4th, Zack Bietz-PA 2nd and Josh Halladay-NY 4th respectively). Bryant lost his only match to NY state qualifier, Kurt Shear, but, also defeated PIAA AA State qualifier, Todd Hall of Athens.

DJ Myers 135, Zac Baumgartner 140, and Dalton Lester 160 earned 3rd place finishes and Kyle Kuntz 103 and Caleb Baker finished fourth.

It was a grueling tournament considering the level of competition, and the fact that most of our wrestlers competed in as many as 7 matches. The team showed a lot of determination and toughness over the two day tournament.

The varsity team will be off until January 8th and 9th, when they will travel to the always competitive Tool City Tournament in Meadville.

Team Scores: 1. Juniata 270, 2. General McLane 229, 3. Pal-Mac, NY 226, 4. Norristown 201, 5. Greene, NY 199.5, 6. Johnson City, NY 191, 7. Athens 137, 8. Tunkhannock 60.

McLane Wrestlers Impressive In Their First Dual Meet

Last December, the GM matmen barely sqeaked out a 3 point win over Conneaut Lake when Paul Scharrer anchored the effort with an unexpected victory at 103 pounds. Wednesday night, the Lancers blew out the Lakers even without Scharrer's help. McLane trailed early but only briefly, when they found themselves on the short end of a 10-9 score. After that, it was all McLane.

Jay Stockhausen started the night off with a dominating 12-1 win over Paul Duda at 145 lbs. At 160 lbs., Dalton Lester got one of 3 Lancer pins when he used a quick takedown and a crossface cradle to stick Brandon Sherman. Doug Myers took just over a minute to takedown and pin his opponent at 189. The Lancers led, 16-9 at that point.

Travis Bryant gave the team another 3 points when he posted a 2-0 decision over Drew Ketchum at 215. Big Caleb Baker got pin number three at 285 and he took just 34 seconds to do it. At 103 lbs., Kyle Kuntz dominated his opponent right from the opening buzzer. When the smoke cleared, Kuntz had scored 21 points and a technical fall.

Tim Wheeling posted a solid, 3-0 win over Bobby Juracko at 112, avenging a loss at the hands of the Laker in last year's match. Wheeling's win gave GM a commanding, 33-9 lead. DJ Myers finished the night with a 6-1 win over Seth Rendullic at 135. Myers used three nearly perfect high crotch takedowns to do all of his scoring.

Tom Nuhfer and Brandon Horn both dropped very close decisions, but deserve a pat on the back for their valiant efforts. Nuhfer proved that he's become a top notch competitor, by nearly upsetting last year's District 10 runnerup, Dennis Diodati.

It's noteworthy that the Lancers pulled off the one sided victory even though they were short two starters. Paul Scharrer and Tyler Hendricks are both sidelined at the present time. The GM wrestlers will be back in action this weekend at the Jarvis Wildcat Memorial Tournament in Athens, PA.
