GM Wrestlers Upset McDowell 34-23

Less than two weeks after upsetting Fort LeBoeuf (last year's 3rd placers at the AA PIAA Team Duals), the red hot Mclane wrestling team pulled off another stunner by beating last year's AAA PIAA team runnerup, McDowell, 34-23. The victory didn't come easily but the Lancers got the job done, thanks to come from behind wins by Joe Wheeling and Alex Thayer as well as some gutsy wrestling by the rest of the team.

Mike Sutton, who just returned to the lineup after suffering an early season injury, got things rolling for the Lancers with an 8-3 win over Ryan Daley at 152 lbs. Ossie Bowers followed with a 3-1 decision over a game Joe Campanella at 160. Tyler Hendricks posted a 9-1 major decision at 170 lbs. to put the Lancers up 10-0. But, then Alex Thayer really got the GM side fired up. Trailing 4-2 going into the final stanza, Thayer locked up a crossface cradle for the second time in that period and stuck his opponent with just 39 seconds remaining. That made it 16-0, McLane.

Chris Laird posted a 3-0 shutout over Mitch Boetcher at 195 lbs. and Jake Baker received a forfeit at 220 to make the score 25-0 in favor of the Lancers. While it was a commanding lead, the toughest part of the Trojan's lineup was yet to come.

Scott Augustine got McDowell on the board with a 6-0 win over Ian Mallory at heavyweight to make the team score 25-3. That's when the game changer happened. Joe Wheeling was trailing a very talented Charlie Lennox, 2-0 at 106 lbs. late in the 3rd period. Joe was chasing Lennox and nearly had a takedown at the edge of the mat with less than a minute remaining, but the two wrestlers were called out of bounds. Wheeling worked a front headlock, spun behind Lennox and tried to take control. Wheeling clearly had both legs in and Lennox's arm trapped with 11 ticks left on the clock, but was not awarded the takedown until 10 seconds later. That tied the bout and sent it to overtime. Joe wasted no time in the OT as he went back to the front headlock, dumped Lennox to his back and pinned the Trojan 20 seconds into the period. That put the Lancers on top, 31-3, but McDowell still had some talented wrestlers coming up.

McDowell won the next two bouts, one by technical fall at 113 lbs. and one by decision at 120. That made the score, 31-11 (McDowell was penalized a team point following the 106 lbs. bout). The Trojans were still within striking distance at that point, but they needed to win the last four bouts and they needed a lot of bonus points. They would get neither!

Keller Watkins put an end to McDowell's hopes for a comeback and clinched the dual for the Lancers when he beat Coleman Cousins 6-3 at 126 lbs. McDowell won the last three bouts, but it was too little too late. Final score: McLane 34, McDowell 23.

The Lancers are now 3-0 and could be on their way to the Region 4 Title.

Notes from the GM vs. McDowell Dual:

The win against the McDowell Trojans was the 500th for the McLane wrestling program since it's inception in 1961. Gary Gilbert began the program and was the Lancers first head coach. Of those 500 wins, just four head coaches are responsible for 413 of them. Tim Mulholland-127, Ryan Cook-106, Steve Samol-100 and Gil Troutman-80.

Kudos to Ian Mallory for his performance last night. The sophomore only lost by decision to last year's District 10 champ and state qualifier, Scott Augustine. A tip of the hat also to Brandon Koehler for his gutsy wrestling. Brandon fought off of his back several times against a very tough wrestler and avoided what could have been a momentum changing pin for McDowell. Also, the entire middle of the lineup (120-145) did a great job of denying the Trojans bonus points where they expected to get them.

It was a lot of fun for the GM fans to watch this group of young men step up and perform so well. They won where they had to win and where they couldn't win they wrestled their hearts out anyway. Keep working hard guys...there's is no telling how far you can go!

Joe Wheeling Wins King of the Mountain Title

The McLane wrestling team had a good weekend at the prestigious King of the Mountain Tournament at Central Mountain High School. The Lancers came away with five placewinners including a champion and placed 13th out of a 33 team field.

Joe Wheeling ran his record to 6-0 and beat the #8, #4 and #2 seeds on his way to the 106 lbs title. Joe racked up 2 pins, a technical fall and a 4-0 shutout, before posting a 5-2 win over #2 seed, Johnathon Gabriel of Bedford in the finals. Tyler Hendricks (170) compiled a 3-2 record at K.O.M. Tyler had a bye, a 9-3 win in the 2nd round and won by fall before dropping a 10-0 major decision to Tom Sleigh of DuBois in the semifinal round. Hendricks lost again in the consi semis but bounced back to snag 5th place by besting Brandon Bailey of Redbank Valley, 3-1.

Unseeded Jake Baker wrestled a great tournament and took 5th place at 220 lbs. Jake started with a bye and then lost to #3 seed, Jordan Wood of Boyertown. Baker then proceeded to rattle of four straight wins, two of them over the #4 and #8 seeds to make the consi semis. He lost to #2 seed, Aram Moffit of Southwestern, but finished with an 8-4 decision over Jersey Shore's Nate Caputo. Ossie Bowers opened the tourney with a pair of wins before dropping a 9-2 decision to #4 seed, Taylor Fox of LeBoeuf. Bowers put together two more wins to make the consolation semis before ending the tournament with a pair of losses. But his 4-3 record was enough for a 6th place medal.

Chris Laird won his first two bouts to make the quarterfinals before losing a close one to #2 seed, Landon Hanna of DuBois. Chris pulled out a 3-1 OT win over Garrette Reinwald of Fort LeBoeuf to make the medal rounds. After dropping a heart wrenching 3-2 decision to #3 seed, Blaze Buckwalter of Central Mt. Laird finished by taking a 4-3 squeaker over #9 Jordan Wertz of Boyertown for 7th place. Deane Twitchell wrestled well, going 3-2 and losing just one match short of the medal rounds. Alex Thayer had a pair of wins before bowing out of the tournament.

Notes from Central Mountain:

Joe Wheeling became the first Mclane wrestler to win a King of the Mountain Tournament title. Way to go, JD!!!

Kyle Sult and Ian Mallory scored their first varsity wins at the King of the Mountain Tournament. The talented freshmen are certain to have many more W's in their high school wrestling careers.

McLane Wrestlers Open With A
Big Win Over Fort LeBoeuf

The McLane wrestling team proved they will be a force to reckon with in their home opener on Friday evening with a 37-24 victory over the Fort LeBoeuf Bisons. It was a big win over a highly touted Bison team that placed 3rd at last year's PIAA AA Team Duals. The Lancers won 9 of 14 weight classes, posting 3 pins and a major decision.

Jake Baker started the effort with a solid 3-0 whitewashing of 11th ranked, Nate Conti at 285 lbs. Joe Wheeling followed with a totally dominating performanceat 106, running up a big lead and then decking Isaac Bengal in a little over 2 1/2 minutes. After a loss at 113 lbs. Freshman, Hunter Hendricks (120 lbs.) ground out an impressive 4-3, come from behind decision over Tyler Kuzma, giving the Lancers a 12-6 team lead. Keller Watkins tacked on another 3 team points with a 7-4 decision over Adam Borgia at 126 lbs.

Ken Stoll increased the GM team lead to 19-9 with a 9-0 major decision over Shane Newell at 138 lbs. Somerset transfer, Mike Sutton brought the screaming Mclane crowd to their feet when he decked LeBoeuf's regional placewinner, Brad Malinowski late in the 2nd period of their 152 lbs. bout. That made the score, McLane-25 Fort LeBoeuf-15. Ossie Bowers posted a nifty, 6-3 come from behind win over Taylor Harrington at 160. Then Alex Thayer clinched the match when he flattened Eli Humes with just 9 ticks remaining on the clock at 182 lbs. Chris Laird followed with a 7-1 win over Gage Salusky at 195 to put some icing on the cake. Final score, GM-37, FLB-24.

Notes from the GM vs. FLB Dual:

While it's still early, this McLane team appears to be about as well balanced as any in recent memory. There just doesn't seem to be any weak spots. If the team stays healthy and continues to improve it could be a very exciting season!

The entire team looked pretty sharp last night, but I was especially impressed with Mike Sutton who seemed to have no problem handling Brad Malinowski who placed 4th at last year's AA regional tournament. Mike was patient and kept looking for an opening. When he finally got one he stuck Malinowski. Nice job! Hunter Hendricks also showed a lot of poise last night by pulling out a 4-3 decision against a tough opponent. Hendricks is going to be a lot of fun to watch over the next four years. Jake Baker also deserves kudos for bumping up a weight class and posting a convincing 3-0 win over state ranked, Nate Conti.

The Lancers win over Fort LeBoeuf was the 498th in the history of the McLane Wrestling program. 500 here we come.

Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff for a job well done.
