GM
Wrestlers Stun McDowell, 30-28
McDowell
had every reason to be confident coming into Thursday's
dual meet against General McLane. The Trojans were
coming off a stunning win over perennial powerhouse
Reynolds (who hadn't lost a dual meet at home in
20 years) and looked like they were going to be
the team to beat in Region 4 this year. But the
McLane wrestling team proved they were up to
the challenge by pulling off a huge upset over the
Trojans for the second straight year. The Lancers
were down 19-6 after the first five bouts, but ran
off six consecutive wins in the middle weights to
go on top, 24-19. The comeback was stalled by McDowell's
Coleman Cousins who posted hard fought, 7-2 win
over freshman, Ethan Laird. Tyree
Spearman won by forfeit putting McDowell back in
front, 28-24 with one bout to go.
In
came Cody Lentz. Cody took a commanding 5-0
lead into the last minute of his bout with Zach
Rindfuss, but a win by decision wouldn't be enough
to overcome McDowell's 4 point lead and Lentz knew
it. Cody kept working the power half he had been
trying to turn Rindfuss with for 2 periods and finally
muscled the Trojan to his back for a 3 count. That
would have given Lentz the major, and GM the win
on criteria. But Cody wasn't taking any chances.
He kept digging and adjusting until he flattened
Rindfuss with just 6 ticks left on the clock. That
brought the screaming McLane fans to their feet!
McLane
was able to pull off the win over McDowell even
without Joe Wheeling in the lineup. Wheeling was
forced to sit out the dual meet due to an injury
he suffered in practice earlier in the week.
Coach
Cook took a calculated risk at the start of
the match and bumped Chris Laird up to 220, putting
his faith in Cody to be the closer. It paid off!
GM
took a 6-0 lead when Chris Laird decked Ben
Bish in just over 5 minutes. McDowell won the next
four bouts to go up 19-6. That's when McLane's tough
middle weights stepped up to the plate. Hunter
Hendricks posted a dominating 5-0 shutout over
Benji Yates at 126 lbs. Owen Watkins pulled
off a 1-0 squeaker over Lucas Peterson at 132. Watkins
wrestled a very smart match earning the win on a
penalty point. At 138, Keller Watkins was
in control for all six minutes and posted a one
sided 5-0 decision. Deane Twitchell had to
battle to pull off his win over Jake Paulson at
145. Deane was in control for most of the bout,
but Paulson pulled a slick move and tied the bout
at 5 midway through the final period. Twitchell
escaped and was able to hold off his opponent for
a 6-5 victory. That brought the Lancers to within
a point of the Trojans (19-18).
At
152, Mike Sutton decisioned Ryan Dailey,
2-0. That put McLane back in the lead. Justin
Miller followed with 6-3 win over Cody Perry
at 160 lbs. That made the score 24-19 in favor of
the Lancers. Cousins and Spearman won the next two
bouts, putting McDowell back on top and setting
the stage for Cody Lentz's heroic finish.
Notes
From the McDowell Dual Meet:
Cody
Lentz was the hero last night. As the closer
he pulled off a match winning pin against a very
stubborn opponent. But the win really was a team
effort. Ian Mallory did a great job of not
giving up any bonus points against a seasoned opponent.
Owen Watkins had his head completely in the
game. The freshman didn't make any mistakes and
that was the difference as he came out on top 1-0
on a penalty point. Deane Twitchell remained
calm and focused in the face of some bad breaks
and hung in there for a 6-5 win. Justin Miller
seems to improve with every match and showed he
has the ability to scramble out of trouble and come
out on top. And Cody Lentz...we are all glad
you came back!

Lancers
Win Home Opener
The
McLane wrestling team won big in their home opener
over Strong Vincent on Tuesday evening. Keller
Watkins posted a 3-2 decision over a game John
Ciotti at 138 lbs. to give the team a 3-0 lead.
Deane Twitchell received a forfeit at 145
and then Mike Sutton decked Gary Williams
in 42 seconds at 152 lbs. to put the Lancers on
top 15-0.
Jared
Carlson got Vincent on the board with a wild 12-10
win over Justin Miller at 160. Miller gave
the Colonel junior all he could handle and nearly
pulled off an upset when he came close to pinning
Carlson in a headlock. Freshman Ethan Laird
looked impressive posting a 17-0 technical fall
over Kane Patron at 170. That gave GM a 20-3 lead.
Chris Laird got another six points for Mclane
with an incredible 16 second fall at 195 lbs. Jake
Lenhart and Ian Mallory also followed
with pins at 220 and 285 to make the score 38-7.
Tony
Damore received a forfeit at 106 to give the
Lancers a commanding 44-7 lead. Joe Wheeling's
bout with Carmen Ciotti looked like it was going
to be a real battle at first, until Wheeling turned
into a tilting machine and ran up a 10-0 lead before
pinning Ciotti in just under 4 minutes. That made
the score 50-7. The Colonels got wins at 120 and
126 before Owen Watkins closed it out with
a win by forfeit 132. Final score: Lancers 56, Vincent
17.
General
Mclane moved to 1-0 in Region 4 and 1-1 overall.
They will get their biggest test of the season this
Thursday against a very tough McDowell squad that
snapped a 20 year Reynolds home winning streak last
week with a 30-25 win over the Raiders.

Wheeling Wins Second Straight KOM Title
Smokin'
Joe Wheeling won his second straight King
of the Mountain Tournament title this weekend at
Central Mountain. Joe won 4 straight bouts to claim
the 113 lbs. crown, giving up a grand total of 4
points along the way. Wheeling did have to battle
it out with a very game Charlie Lennox of McDowell,
winning a 2-1 squeaker in the finals. Joe has a
9-0 record at KOM in his two appearances at the
tournament and his last win in the finals was the
100th of his career.
Three
other Mclane wrestlers placed in the tournament.
Keller Watkins went 5-2 and placed 5th in
the 138 lbs. weight class. Keller racked up a couple
of falls and a technical fall along the way. Chris
Laird also took 5th place at 195 lbs. Chris
went 4-2 and had a pair of pins. Ian Mallory
came into the tournament unseeded but snagged 8th
place at 275. Ian also had two pins in the tournament.
Mike Sutton didn't place but he did win three
bouts against two losses. Deane Twitchell
and Ethan Laird both went 2-2.
The
Lancers placed 11th in the team race, improvng
on last year's 13th place finish. They managed to
move up a couple of spots in spite of being shorthanded
one very good wrestler. Hunter Hendricks
had to sit out the tournament due to injury.

Lancers
Drop Opener To #7 Canon-McMillan
The
McLane wrestlers got off to a good start against
last year's PIAA Team Duals Champion Canon McMillan.
Mike Sutton opened the dual meet with a 9-1 major
decision over Micah Kusturis and gave the Lancers
a 4-0 lead. Canon Mac responded with 2 big pins
that put GM in a 12-4 hole. But Adam Steiner was
awarded a forfeit at 195 lbs. and Chris Laird racked
up a 12-2 major decision to put the Lancers in back
front 14-12. Unfortunately, that would be their
last lead of the night.
Canon
MacMillan won 8 of the next 9 bouts to run away
with the match. The only bright spot in those last
9 bouts was Keller Watkins' solid 6-0 win over Alec
Hutchin at 138 lbs. The Lancers also were the victims
of some plain old bad luck. Ethan Laird was wrestling
well and held a 5-1 lead over Jesse Lesko when he
got turned and then pinned with just 6 ticks left
on the clock. Joe Wheeling was also leading by 2
over state qualifier, Brendon Price when he was
reversed and turned. Wheeling ended up losing by
one point. Ian Mallory also lost a close one in
overtime.
The
McLane wrestlers wil be back in action this weekend
at the always tough King of the Mountain Tournament.
