LANCERS BRING
HOME FIRST KOM TEAM TROPHY!
If
the McLane wrestlers proved one thing this weekend, it's
that they are going to be a tournament team to contend with.
GM put three wrestlers in the finals, two more in the consolations
finals and snagged 3rd place at one of PA.'s toughest
tournaments. This is the first time the Lancers have finished
in the top three at King of the Mountain and they
did it with just 11 wrestlers! It was an amazing accomplishment,
especially considering the team's finishes over the last
four years (23rd, 12th, 11th and 13th).
They even held a narrow first place lead going into the
final round, but all five wrestlers lost their final bouts.
GM's three finalists put out great efforts, losing to #1
seeds by the narrowest of margins. Ethan Laird (195),
Owen Watkins (152) and Jacob Lenhardt (285)
all wrestled their way into the finals. Andrew Brest
(106) and Riley Vaughn (220) made it into the consolation
finals.
Andrew
Brest (106) went 4-2 and placed 4th! Brest racked up
an 8-0 major decision in the preliminary round and then
dropped a close, 7-4 decision. But he put together three
straight wins, including a pin of #1 seed and 3rd ranked
(AA), Kyle Anspach to make the consolation finals. Andrew
lost a 5-2 decision in the consi finals to #6 seed and 9th
ranked (AAA) Max Menendez of Council Rock South.
Owen
Watkins (152) posted two falls and a technical fall
over seeded opponents on his way to the finals. He dropped
an 8-7 heart breaker in the finals against top seed, nationally
ranked, Riley Palmer of Council Rock South. Watkins reversed
Palmer twice during the match and came close to scoring
back points as time expired.
Ethan
Laird (195) scratched and clawed his way into the finals
in a very tough weight class. Ethan knocked off the #6 and
#2 seeds by close margins. In the semifinal round Laird
pulled off a notable 3-1 win over AA state unnerup, Anthony
Walters of Bishop McCort. He lost a 4-3 squeaker to #1 seed,
Cole Nye of Bishop McDevitt, who's ranked first in the state
(AA) at 195 lbs.
Riley
Vaughn (220) went 4-2 and grabbed 4th place. All four
of Riley's wins came by way of fall. Both of his losses
came at the hands of #3 seed and AA state runnerup, Josiah
Jones of Bishop McCort. Riley's four pins added some valuable
bonus points to the team effort!
Jacob
Lenhardt (285) also posted a slew of bonus points by
pinning his way into the finals. He had three falls, two
of them coming against the #6 and #2 seeds. He just barely
missed a gold medal, losing 5-3 in overtime to Exeter's
top seed, Oscar Daniels (ranked 8th AAA).
Brett
Mallory went 2-2 and just missed making the podium.
He pinned his first two opponents before losing, 6-4 in
overtime to #2 seed, Carnell Andrews of Bishop McCort. He
was eliminated in the consi quarterfinal round when he lost
to Cole Meredith of Owen J Roberts.
Cayden
Connolly (170) also went 2-2 with a fall and technical
fall. Kyle Bloomquist (145) got his first win, a
7-2 decision in the first consolation round. Jack Kaulis
(182) also scored one win, an 8-0 major decision in the
first consi round.
The
Lancers will be back in action Tuesday at home against Conneaut,
OH.
