GM Shuts Out Braves, 81-0

The GM wrestling team stayed perfect in Region 4 with a lopsided win over the Braves at Iroquois on Thursday. There were only five contested matches and the Lancers won four of them by fall. Seth Yarger (220) and Michael Abbate (138) both scored first period pins. Hunter Robison (106) and Cody Stempka (182) also decked their opponents. Beau Caro (126) added a 2-0 shutout over Thomas Johnson.

The win over Iroquois improved the team's record to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in Region 4. They will break for the holidays and then face their biggest test in the region on January 2nd when they take on Fort LeBoeuf at home on Takedown Cystic Fibrosis Night!

Lancers Rip Huskies to Improve to 5-2

The McLane wrestling team improved their season record to 5-2 and Region 4 record to 2-0 with a big, 48-21 win over Harborcreek at home on Tuesday. The Huskies and the Lancers battled evenly through the first seven bouts. The score was knotted at 15 after the 170 lbs. bout, but GM pulled away after that, winning six of the last seven.

Harborcreek struck first with a pin at 126 lbs. Matt Leehan responded with a pin of his own at 132 lbs. for the Lancers. Michael Abbate gave GM their first lead when he ground out an 11-9 decision at 138. Harborcreek tied the score again with a 5-1 decision at 145. At 152 lbs., Aric Sweet decked Harborcreek's Pablo Morales with one second remaining in the first period. The Huskies tied the team score once again when they won the next two bouts by decision, but a forfeit to Shamus Ford at 182 and a win by fall by Cody Stempka at 195 put the Lancers ahead for good.

Harborcreek got their last win at 220 lbs. making the team score, 27-21. GM picked up two more wins by forfeit at 285 and 106 to take an insurmountable, 39-21 lead. Gabriel Bayle pinned the Huskies' Amy Nam at 113 lbs. and then Andrew Brest finished the Huskies off with a hard fought 7-4 win over talented freshman, Conner Pierce at 120 lbs. Final score: 48-21!

Brest, Leehan, Yarger Medal at KOM

Three McLane wrestlers brought home some hardware from this weekend's King of the Mountain Tournament. Andrew Brest and Matt Leehan both battled their way to 4th place finishes and Seth Yarger took 7th!

Andrew Brest had to slug it out in one of the tournament's toughest weight classes (120), that was loaded with state qualifiers and place winners. Andrew started the tournament by pinning Schulz from Saegertown, then scored a lopsided 7-1 decision over 14th ranked (AAA), Garrett Thompson of Franklin Regional. In the quarter final round Brest dominated last year's state place winner (6th AAA) Ben Monn of Cumberland Valley. In the semi finals, Brest lost by fall to last year's AAA runner up, Killian Delaney of West Chester Henderson. He bounced back in the consi semis by posting a 3-1 decision over two time AAA state place winner, Christian Fisher of Mifflin County. Andrew had to settle for 4th place when he dropped a heart breaking, 4-2 decision in the consolation finals to two time state qualifier, Maximino Mendez of Council Rock South.

Matt Leehan also had a tough road to the podium. The GM sophomore had a first round bye and then posted a 12-2 major decision over 20th ranked (AA) Ian Coller of Line Mountain. In the quarter final round, Matt won by injury default over Pottsville Area's C. Shoffstall. He lost a 5-1 decision to last year's New Jersey 7th placer, Travis Jones of Phillipsburg in the semi final round and then bounced back with a pin against two time state qualifier (AA), Byron Daubert of Forest Hills in the consi semis. Matt lost his final bout in the consolation finals by a score of 9-2 to 13th ranked (AAA), Jason Geyer of Seneca Valley.

Seth Yarger fought his way to a 7th place finish in the 220 lbs. weight class. Seth opened with a fall over Singleton of Franklin Regional and followed that with a 3-0 white washing of G. Horvath of Phillipsburg, NJ. In the quarter finals, Yarger lost by fall to #2 seed, D. Close of Bald Eagle Area, but then bounced back in the next round by pulling out a 5-2 decision over M. Barrier of Bellefonte. In the consi quarter finals he lost by fall to eventual 5th placer, Cael Hembury of Muncy. Yarger finished the tournament with a 3-1 win over Williamsport's Charles Cruz to nab 7th place!

Heavyweight, Hunter Dickson was the only other GM wrestler to post a winning record (3-2). Dickson opened with a 5-4 decision over Saegertown's Jackson, but then lost by fall to Central Mountain's Jacob Edwards, the #2 seed. Hunter responded with back to back shutouts (2-0 and 1-0) before losing to the #4 seed, one bout short of placing. Shamus Ford went 2-2. Both of his victories came by way of fall.

The team will be back in action on Tuesday, December 18th at home against the Harborcreek Huskies and on Thursday the 20th at Iroquois before Christmas break.

News and Notes:

Andrew Brest became a three time KOM place winner this past weekend. He was 4th in 2016, 2nd last year and 4th this year. No less than 6 wrestlers in the 120 lbs. weight class (including Brest) were state ranked. Andrew knocked of 3 of them! Andrew posted 4 wins at KOM and ran his career total to 87!

GM Swats Yellow Jackets For First Region Win

The McLane wrestling team won their first home match over Girard, 57-23 on Wednesday. The win raised their early season record to 4-2 and 1-0 in Region 4. Even though both teams had full lineups the pin fest lasted less than an hour. Of the 14 contested matches, only two weren't decided by pins and only one went the distance. The bout that did go the full 6 minutes was the most exciting contest of the evening. After several lead changes, freshman, Landon Beachly bested Girard's Dustin Roesch, 9-8 on a last second reversal to steal a narrow victory!

Andrew Brest, Matt Leehan, James Laird, Cody Stempka, Shamus Ford, Seth Yarger, Hunter Robison and Clay Kuntz all pinned their Girard opponents. Jubree James also won by fall to score his first varsity win as a Lancer! Kuntz had the fastest pin when he decked Girard's Dylan Wisniewski in just 33 seconds!

This was the first meeting between the two teams since 2002 when GM shut out the Yellow Jackets, 68-0 handing Coach Tim Mulholland his 100th head coaching dual meet win! Wednesday's win over the Jackets marked Coach Ryan Cook's 185th head coaching victory. Oddly enough, the last meeting between the two teams was Cook's first year as an assistant coach!

The McLane wrestlers will be back in action this weekend at one of the year's toughest tournaments, King of the Mountain at Central Mountain High School.
