LANCERS CRUSH BRAVES!

The GM wrestling team crushed the Iroquois Braves on Thursday evening at home by a score of 60-10. The Braves only managed one win (a major decision) on the mat in the contest. The Braves' other 6 points came by way of forfeit at 106 lbs. James Laird, Seth Yarger, Hunter Dickson, Matt Leehan, Aric Sweet, Jackson Spires and Elijah Schreiber all pinned their Iroquois opponents. Leehan had the fastest pin of the evening with a 14 second beauty, but Schreiber and Laird weren't far behind with 15 and 23 second stretch jobs of their own.

Wilson Spires racked up a hard fought, 2-1 victory at 220 lbs. But Jaxon Scrutchins' match was probably the fan favorite of the evening. Scrutchins found himself trailing 4-0 early in the match but clawed his way back to tie the bout at 4. He finally put the match away late in the 3rd period when he threw in a half nelson and turned his opponent for 2 near fall points! Gunnar Gage and Beau Caro both received wins by way of forfeit to round out the GM scoring.

The latest edition of PA Power Wrestling's state rankings just came out and no less than six McLane wrestlers made the cut. 106 Hunter Robison #2, 113 Gunnar Gage #12, 132 Matt Leehan #9, 152 Jackson Spires #7, 182 James Laird #24 and 195 Seth Yarger #14! The team also showed up in the AA rankings at number 9!

*Notes/Milestones: With the win over Iroquois, Head Coach Ryan Cook reached 195 career coaching wins! Matt Leehan's win by fall on Thursday was his 71st career win and his 41st career pin. He needs just 4 more to make the GM record book!

The team will be off for the holidays but will return to face their old rival, Fort Leboeuf on January 2nd and then they head to the Tool City Tournament in Meadville on the 3rd and 4th.

LANCERS PLACE IN TOP FIVE AT KOM!

To say the GM wrestling team had a successful outing at this weekend's King of the Mountain Tournament would be an understatement. After last year's 25th place finish, the Lancers returned and set a team record by putting six wrestlers on the podium. Five GM wrestlers advanced to Saturday's semifinal round. All five lost in the semis but bounced back to place in the top six. GM's other top six finisher, James Laird lost to the #1 seed in the quarterfinals, but posted back to back consolation round wins to secure a medal!

Hunter Robison placed 5th at 106 lbs. He started the tournament with three straight wins before dropping a 6-0 decision in the semis to Hayden Cunningham of State College (ranked #14-AAA). He lost a s squeaker in the consi semis to another state ranked wrestler, Cael Nasdeo (#17-AAA), by a score of 8-6. Hunter finished the tournament with a 4-0 win over Bellefonte's Aidan O`Shea to secure the #5 spot on the podium. Gunnar Gage took 6th in the 113 pound weight class and became just the second GM freshman to place at KOM (Leno Ciotti placed 5th as a 9th grader in 2014). Gage won his first three bouts by fall and two of those pins were against state ranked opponents (#13 Derek Keen of Central Mountain and 14th ranked, Jacob Houpt of Canon McMillan). Gunnar dropped a 4-0 decision to #1 seed, Julien Maldonado (state ranked #2-AAA) of Boyertown in the semis and an 11-9 heart breaker to Calan Bollman of Chestnut Ridge in the consi semis. Gage lost to Nathan Holderbaum (ranked #3 AA) in the 5th place match.

Matt Leehan placed at 138 pounds. Matt also racked up three straight wins (two by fall) to reach the semifinals. He dropped a close, 3-1 decision to state ranked (#11-AAA) Riley Bower of Williamsport, then rebounded to shut out Northern York's Liam Strouse, 4-0 in the consolation semis. Leehan placed 4th after losing his consi finals match, 2-0 to #3 seed Bryce Vollman of Muncy. Jackson Spires went 5-1 in the 152 pound class and took 3rd! Spires also won his first three bouts (2 falls and 1 major decision) before losing, 5-1 to Antonio Petrucelli (state ranked 4th-AAA) of Owen J Roberts. Spires came back to post victories in his final two matches to snag the bronze! Both of Jackson's final wins came against state ranked wrestlers, 20th ranked-AA, Gryphon Callihan of Chestnut Ridge by a 4-2 score and #8-AAA Tanner Rohaley of Canon McMillan by injury default.

James Laird had a tough road at 182 but pulled off a 6th place finish. He won his first two matches, one by fall and one by major before dropping to the consi rounds after losing to #1 seed, Gerrit Nijenhuis (ranked #1-AAA) of Canon McMillan in the quarters. Laird scored an impressive 8-0 major decision over Fort LeBoeuf's state ranked (8th-AA) Tim Church in the quarterfinals to clinch a spot on the podium. Seth Yarger was McLane's final place winner at 195 lbs. Yarger posted three straight wins by fall to advance to the semifinals. Yarger lost to state ranked (#9-AAA) Cole Whitmer of Trinity in the semis, but came roaring back with wins in his final two bouts to take 3rd place.

The team posted a solid, 5th place finish at one of the country's toughest tournaments! Also contributing to the Lancers point total were Clay Kuntz (1-2), Jaxon Scrutchins (1-2), Wilson Spires (2-2) and Wyatt Hall (2-2). The McLane wrestlers will be back in action on Tuesday, December 17th against the Huskies at Harborcreek.
