LLOYD
RUNNER-UP AT TROJAN WARS
Magnus
Lloyd wrestled his way into the 189 lbs. finals
before losing a close one to top seed, Caleb Close of
Bald Eagle. After an opening round bye, Magnus registered
three straight pins, which put him in the semifinals
against 10th ranked, Dante Burns of Conwell-Egan Catholic.
It was a tight match but Lloyd scored a couple of timely
takedowns and added a third period escape to come away
with a 5-3 victory. The finals bout was also a nail
biter, neither wrestler was able to score during the
first two periods, but Close got a reversal 11 seconds
into the final period and held on for a 2-0 victory
over Magnus.
Three
other GM wrestlers placed in the top six. Ryan Dedrick
went 5-1, losing just once, in the semis to top seed
and number one ranked, Dillon Berchtold of Owen J Roberts.
Berchtold, who was a state finalist last year, rolled
to technical fall over Dedrick, but Ryan bounced back
with two wins to nab the bronze medal! Hudson Spires
went 5-2 and took 4th place in the 160 lbs. weight class.
Hudson pinned his first two opponents before losing
to Wil Buckler of St. Mary`s Ryken, MD. He bounced back
with two more wins to make the consi finals before losing
to Buckler again. Two of Hudson's wins came against
state ranked wrestlers, #10 Dan Haubert in the blood
round and #23 Eli Butler in the consolation quarterfinals.
Chance Kimmy rounded out the Lancer medalists
with a 5th place finish. Kimmy rattled off three consecutive
quick pins to make the semifinal round, before losing
to two time state place winner (2nd and 7th), Cameron
Milheim of Warrior Run. Chance then lost a very close,
12-10 decision to Burgettstown's state ranked (15),
Rudy Brown in the consi semi round, but he finished
the tournament with a win to nab 5th!
Ethan
Snyder and Ben Watkins went 3-2 on the weekend.
Josh Caro, Clay Kimmy, Lukas Kuffer,
Christian Gillette and Dan Topel went 2-2.
The
Lancers finished a very respectable 7th place
in the loaded 51 team field. The team will be back in
action on Friday, January 5th. They'll be facing St.
Marys in a dual meet at Edinboro University.
Notes:
Congrats
to Dan Topel and Josh Caro on their first
varsity wins. In fact both wrestlers scored two wins
in the tournament. Magnus Lloyd, Hudson Spires
and Ryan Dedrick lead the team with 11 W's each.
Lloyd is also approaching the 100 career win mark. His
semifinal win this weekend put him at 94. The countdown
begins!

LANCERS
SLAY WILDCATS
The
GM wrestling team, fresh off the King of the Mountain
Tournament, headed to Albion on Tuesday to take
on region foe, Northwestern. The Lancers took a commanding,
34-0 lead right out of the gate. Christian Gillette
started the night off with a 10-0 major decision at
145 lbs. Chance Kimmy, Hudson Spires,
Ben Watkins and Magnus Lloyd followed
up with quick pins. Lloyd took his opponent to the mat
and stretched him in just 25 seconds.
Northwestern
got on the board with a pin at 215 lbs. Ryan Dedrick
responded by bumping up to 285 lbs. and winning an 8-2
decision to make the score, 37-6. The Wildcats squeezed
out wins at 114, 121 and 139 but forfeited the 107,
127 and 133 weight classes.
The
team's overall record is now 2-1 and 2-0 in the region.
The Lancers will head to Chambersburg for the Trojan
Wars, a 29 team tournament, which includes several
state ranked teams. It will be GM's last competition
of 2023.

MAGNUS
NABS BRONZE AT KOM
Magnus
Lloyd made the podium for the second straight year
at the arduous King of the Mountain Tournament at Central
Mountain High School this past weekend. KOM is considered
to be one of the toughest tourneys in PA. and this year
was no different.
Lloyd
won his first match by fall but was upset by 17th ranked,
Dayne Miller of Cumberland Valley in the quarterfinals.
That however, would be the last time Lloyd would lose.
He ran off four straight victories, including a technical
fall and two major decisions to secure 3rd place! Two
of those wins were over state ranked opponents. Magnus
was also GM's only medalist at KOM last season when
he took 6th.
Five
other GM wrestlers came up just short of making the
podium. Clay Kimmy, Chance Kimmy, Hudson
Spires, Matt Caro and Ryan Dedrick
lost close matches in the blood round. All five posted
3-2 records on the weekend. Dom Snyder and Derek
Dube both went 2-2. Landon Harnett, Lukas Kuffer
and Logan Hayes each had one win to add to the team
point total.
Notes:
Congratulations
to freshman, Logan Hayes who scored his first
varsity victory by fall in the first consolation round.
A tip of the cap to back up wrestler, Matt Caro,
who went 3-2 before bowing out. All three of his wins
were nail biters, but he got it done. Chance Kimmy
wrestled a great tournament. All three of Kimmy's wins
were pins and both losses were to AAA state ranked wrestlers.
He dropped a close, 5-3 decision to #20, Kyle Deisley
of Hempfield and lost by fall to #9 Nick Jones of West
Allegheny.
The
Lancers brought home a 3rd place team trophy from KOM
back in 2016. They also were in the top 5 in 2019.
Joe Wheeling remains the only GM wrestler to
win a King of the Mountain title. In fact, he won twice,
once in 2012 and again in 2013.

GM ROLLS
OVER NORTH EAST
The
wrestling team got back on track with a big 47-23 win
over visiting North East on Wednesday evening. Lukas
Kuffer, Hudson Spires, Ben Watkins and Dom Snyder got
pins for the Lancers. Chance Kimmy won by injury default
to add six to the team total and Magnus Lloyd won by
technical fall. Josh Caro and Ryan Dedrick picked up
forfeit wins.
The
team will head down to Central Mountain High School
on Friday for King of the Mountain, one of Pennsylvania's
toughest tournaments. Magnus Lloyd was the only GM wrestler
to place there last year. He came away with a 6th place
finish.
Notes:
Congrats

CHESTNUT
RIDGE EDGES LANCERS IN OPENER
The
McLane wrestling team opened the 2023-24 season on Saturday
with a tough loss at the hands of #13 Chestnut Ridge
in southwestern PA. The defeat was especially hard to
swallow after the Lancers were able to recover from
a 24-0 deficit. Hudson Spires, Derek Dube,
Ben Watkins, Matt Caro and Ryan Dedrick
rattled off five straight pins to change the momentum
and put McLane in front, 30-24. Unfortunately the Lancers
weren't able to nail it down. Chestnut Ridge won the
last two bouts, both by fall to secure their victory.
Derek Dube had the fastest pin of the night flattening
his opponent in just 26 seconds.
The
team will be back in action on Wednesday the 13th at
home against Region 4 rival, North East. McLane defeated
the Grapepickers last year, 42-27. The Lancers will
head to the annual King of the Mountain tournament on
Friday. They will try to improve on last year's 24th
place finish.
